    Something else I like about Shen's writing is that he's clearly delusional - he actually thinks that his parents didn't love him. He really doesn't understand that his actions had consequences regarding their behavior towards him. He really doesn't get it, among other bizarre delusions.
    When I first saw the film I thought his motives were weak, but now I think the writers were brave enough to write a villain who was scary in part because his motives are illogical.

      In the original concept of Shen as a villain, they wanted to lean more into his mental instability as a character but it had to be cut. That and it was supposed to be a big issue that he was albino. The reason he believed he wasn’t loved was because he was so different from a normal child. That and his parents were originally supposed to be a bit neglectful in the original draft too.

      Alot of people dont understand that Tai Lung is the same way. Theres a moment with these villains when the object of their hatred tries to get through to them - with shifu it was an apology, with Po it was acceptance. And both villains show an understanding of whats being said, even for a moment. The fact that they choose to continue their tirade is what makes them villains.

    As an animation student, I truly love how they designed Shen, and I really think that the decision to make Shen a white peacock adds a few layers to his character. Cause in real life, white peacocks tend to have a harder time finding a mate due to their lack of colors (cuz attractiveness by peacock standards is how colorful and grand your feathers are), so in-universe, Shen could be considered hideous and I think this cements his belief that he is unloved (similar to how a lot men irl think the reason they're single is because of their physical appearance when in reality it's their personality). And from that perspective his obsession with the destructive nature of fireworks could be him wanting to turn something bright and beautiful into something ugly and dangerous to make himself feel better. Another thing to mention is that in Peking Opera, White often is given to characters who are treacherous in nature, further cementing Shen's role as a villain. But then again, this is purely my own observation of Shen's design so please take it with a grain of salt

    Shen isn't known for his kung fu skill. However, he's also not the kind of villain who just cowers when straight up fighting is required. He * can * fight. And he's probably better than * most* opponents. He's just not * the * best. If he relied on combat skill alone it would have been a very short movie.

    There's also a theory that Tai Lung's family had been killed by Shen too, and the white leopard was also destined for the same path as Po, just that he was raised by the wrong guy.

    • @cobalt-6D
      @cobalt-6D 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

  • @natey313
    @natey313 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +149

    I think it's possible that in Shen's last moments of the fight, it wasn't just his refusal to give up on his vision, but a final defiance of his fate... Between ultimately losing and falling victim to his destiny, or being proven wrong and submitting to the prophecy, he chose neither, instead deciding to go out on his own terms, by his own hand... To finally take control of his destiny in spite of it...

    • @BitrateBilly
      @BitrateBilly 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

      funnily enough, even going out on his own terms still fulfilled the prophecy, shen's colorscheme and views on the world mirrors po's in that po is black with white details and understands the world is many layers of gray, whereas when is white with black details and has a "with me or against me" mentality to the point where he literally offs his right hand man after he says no, he still was done in by a warrior of black and white, himself.

    I think the greatest thing that sets Shen apart from other mustache twirling villains is that his plans don't bring him happiness or satisfaction. On the surface, he looks like any other generically evil baddie, checking off all the boxes, except one: the sense of joy most cartoon villains take in their roles, marked by their signature laughs. Shen is never happy, he will never be happy, and he knows it. He recognizes his own evil, he's recognized it since he first saw it in his parents' eyes, but by then he felt what he'd done had already put him beyond redemption, this was who he was, so now he's given himself entirely to seeking some vain fulfilment to fill the hole left by his parents' approval. Taking his father's throne wasn't enough, and he admits that even conquering China won't be enough, but he feels incapable and undeserving of the love of others, so like so many real people who spend their lives chasing money, sex or drugs because they've got nothing else, he keeps on conquering. Even when his army and weapons are destroyed, clearly defeated, he doesn't see a point in living and goes to his grave resigned to his evil nature. Kung-Fu Panda 2 takes such a simple and overused archetype, and without changing any of the bones, somehow infused it with completely new life.

    Second i think in shens way the last fight with po was hin findind peace. He realized he was betond redemption and didn't deserve it. So instead of subjecting himself to the inevitable trials and shame tgat was to come if he surrendered he decides to go out on his own terms.
    That is why he fought at the end, he knew he was going to loose but chose to go out fighting and to in a way die at the hands of po. Nit to reject redemption but to face his fate and death on his own terms with his idea of honor.

    With a character like Shen, they committed such an atrocity that they believe they're not redeemable. Only path before them is to move forward, and finish what they started, otherwise all the damage they caused, the deaths, the terror, would have been for nothing. I like how in the film he is always spending so much time trying to convince himself, more than those around him. Even his final conversation with the Soothsayer, he wasn't really talking to her anymore by the end, but himself. Though I do like the fact he lets her go. I like the interpretation of how Shen was his own warrior of black and white that would defeat him. But there is another interesting take on his defeat which I've seen toting about on the Internet a few times!
    That being that, if the red disqualifies him as the warrior of black and white, then in a way, he actually did change his fate. Because he closed his eyes and accepted his death, he was able to take it away from Po, and thusly avoided the prophecy. Yes he still died, but by his own hands instead.

    Whilst all the Kung Fu Panda villains are some of the best from Dreamworks' villainous lineup, including the Chameleon, Shen stands out as the best because he's the only one who's actually evil, not a tragic villain. He truly believed that his parents didn't love him because they banished him. To the contrary, his attempt at genocide was a crime worthy of execution, but they spared him because they loved him so much. Shen's so blinded by rage that he allows his past to determine who he is, something that Po could've done when he discovered the truth, thus reinforcing Shen as a representation of Po's fear of the past turned into welcoming it

    I'm glad Shin got the opportunity to prevent his prophecy from coming true when in a lot of media, especially Greek myths, the protagonists basically does everything in their power to avoid their prophesized demise and even the soothsayers tell him that he can change his fate before it's too late. Oedipus never got such a privilege, his and his parents' prophecy were confusing as all hell. Oedipus didn't even know that he was marrying his own mother, he thought that his adopted parents were his real parents.

    I kinda like also that the villains of all three (good) movies kinda already succeeded before they were killed. Tai Lung wanted revenge and destroyed the village once, but he couldn't get revenge by killing Oogway because he was already dead, or by killing Shi Fu, although he came very close.
    Shen already had wiped out like 95% of panda population in the area and was in control of all of his parent's kingdom (or whatever), and he has all of those cannons and an entire army behind him, he just doesn't get all of China before he dies.
    And Kai did succeed. He got all of the masters in the spirit realm (he defeated Tai Lung, just a fun fact I love), he even got Oogway probably because he didn't really put up a fight and just let Po deal with it. Then, he gets every Kung Fu master in the normal world apart from Tigress, and he even gets Po, so he did succeed, and he wasn't even defeated (not in combat at least), if he hadn't sucked up Po he probably could've just gone back and continued with Po being stuck dead, and Po couldn't have been 100% certain that his Chi would be too much for Kai, so he was taking the risk of creating the most powerful villain ever, and that was, in my opinion, just up to pure luck. Also with Po basically being a Kamikaze and killing himself and Kai, Kai kinda won the physical fight, because otherwise the fight would've ended very differently.

    Shen was the star of Kung Fu Panda 2. Evil and despicably cruel, even to his own forces, yes. But so well written and voice acted that he dominated the story. This is why I like KFP 2 best of all four of the movies. None of the other villains can hold a candle to the sheer presence he exuded. Even when he was being totally trolled by the soothsayer, he was so unstably evil that a part of you would cringe, waiting for his reaction. Also, the climatic fight between Po and Shen was brilliantly choreographed. The end of it where Shen just suddenly accepted his end rather than fight any further was an incredibly powerful moment.

Trying to make a pointless comparison between a soothsayer/ fortune teller in Chinese religion and culture as the goat is in KFP2 and a prophet from Islam (or Abrahamic religion in general) show a lack of understanding on how the two work. It would’ve made far more sense to talk about Chinese soothsayers rather than try and make a distinction to one religion specifically when it holds little to no inspiration in KFP in general, and then going as far as to make a comparison to Moses even though his role was very different to that of the Soothsayer in KFP

    Please do Syndrome next.
    Syndrome has so much more behind his story that a lot of people overlook.
    When he was a kid, he looked up to superheroes. However, his idol, Mr. Incredible pushed him away when he wanted to help him. This made him feel like he wasn’t accepted by the supers, and that the supers were only doing their jobs for fame. Flash forward to after supers are forced to live normal lives, Syndrome plans on getting revenge by testing the supers. He sends out fake news towards supers, giving them the opportunity to take down a killer robot that he created, letting them escape society and live the lives they once had. But it’s a trap.
    Syndrome is testing to see which supers are willing to accept their new lives, and which supers aren’t. Those who have accepted, like Elastagirl, aren’t targeted by Syndrome. But Mr. Incredible and Frozone are because they still do hero duty behind the scenes.
    Syndrome hates the supers because the supers hate society, they hate living like normal people because their powers have made them prideful.
    Syndrome’s goal is to one day sell his inventions so that everyone can be super, and when everyone’s super, no one will be. He’s tired of celebrity fame and attention that the supers had given themselves, and any super who is trying to reclaim that status is led into his trap and killed.
    How to write a just villain: Syndrome.
