    Thanks for watching! Glad I can finally go check out Cosmodore’s video on this series…pretty weird that we both made long Kung Fu Panda retrospectives in the same month, but I guess The Kung Fu Pandaissance™ starts now. If you’ve finished the video, comment your favorite member of the Furious 5 down below, and stay tuned for my Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance video coming in the next few weeks.

    Out of the five I admire viper the most because she is so kind to Po from the start even though she thinks he doesn't belong there at first. "Poor guy is going to get himself killed." Yet she goes to help him with the acupuncture, and later in the third movie, she doesn't complain to shifu that he can't teach when everyone else did.

      @@KFP_Fanboy I firmly disagree with you. KFP 3 is the weakest of the franchise. Not because of his themes and meanings, but because of… I want to say the rythm. Where the themes helped the narration in the first two, it’s holding it back in the third. Most of the time spent in the panda village feel like wasted time. Of course we know it’s important to Po, but everything lacks dynamic during this act. I started reviewing this movie skipping the part where he is at the village before the training, and sudddenly loved this film !

    I rewatched the movies not that long ago and as a kid this scene with po and shifu flew over my head. Now when I saw it again I burst into tears.
    Shifu: "then why didnt you quit!?"
    Po: "because everytime you threw a brick at my head, or told me I stink, it hurt, but it could never hurt more than it did every day just being me. And I thought if there was anyone who could teach me to not be me it could be you, the greatest kung fu teacher in history."
    Shifu: "I can teach you, and I will!"
    Po never saught out any higher power that he could use to be strong and powerful or to rule china . Yes he fandboyed and dreamt of being all powerful and mighty but in reality he just wanted to be a better version of himself. He wanted to learn kung fu so he could change his life for the better and feel like he means something or has a gifted value. That's why oogway chose him. He wanted both a better mind and to be self empowered. Both sides of the yin and yang.

    • @giraculum9981
      @giraculum9981 5 ปีที่แล้ว +201

      what gets me in that scene is Shifu's change in expression when Po says "it hurt". All this time, Shifu's kind of delighted in hurting Po: threatening the wuxi finger hold, letting him fall into the training grounds, throwing him down the stairs. In that scene alone, he uses Oogway's staff to hit Po three times. "It hurt" is the pivot line, where Shifu actually takes ownership of his own failings as a master. The only other scene where Oogway's staff is used as a weapon, incidentally, is when Tai Lung uses it against Shifu.

    • @nkbujvytcygvujno6006
      @nkbujvytcygvujno6006 5 ปีที่แล้ว +165

      Exactly. I love that little moment of realization from Shifu. Before, Po had always just played off all of Shifu’s bullying with humor. He never admitted to how much it hurt him. So Shifu keeps ignoring it and taking out all his frustrations on Po like a punching bag, trying to break his spirit, basically ignoring the cruelty of his own actions, dehumanizing him. In that moment, the reality of Po being a _person_ that Shifu hurt, not some stubborn pest Shifu wanted to get out of the way, not a joke, not an object to direct his frustrations at, a person- hits Shifu. And how cruel everything must have been on Po sinks in, too. Finally, Shifu realizes how cruel he’s been, and sees from Po’s perspective. And all without one word having to be spoken.

    • @razkable

    Mine would be Tigress as well, she was abandoned by her parents at a very young age, the orphanage treated her like a monster because of her insane strength, Shifu did took her in but not to raise her as his child like he did with Tai Lung because he doesn’t want Tigress to become another Tai Lung. There are short films of her past as a teenager, Shifu wanted her to be self-control and she didn’t feel comfortable but during a fight with Boar, she lets it all go and just goes all out. She even went to train in a forest of iron trees (not literally iron, could refer to how their barks are incredibly hard) and it hurt like hell as she was punching then until she no longer feels any pain in her hands. Tigress is by far my favorite out of the 5

    Tigress' design is just stunning to me. Short legs, a broad face, and a long body don't seem like they'd add up to something both elegant and feminine, and yet tigers have all of those. They embraced the difficulties of working with that, without using the common pitfalls in anthropomorphic animation. There's no "add long hair, sexy figure and implied breasts" to make Tigress appeal to human standards of beauty. They can just exaggerate and work with the natural form of the animal, adding more subtle touches like larger eyes and softer features to emphasize her emotions in animation. And it looks fantastic. She's my favourite, by far.

    • @BlueMiaou

      Tigress was my gay awakening. The thing that makes her so successful as a character both in design and in writing is that she was made to be _Tigress_ and not a femme fatale trope. I think generally people find people more appealing than tropes, if that makes sense

Her character design and the way she speaks, you can already tell what kind of personality she has. And even in the first movie it looks like Tigres doesnt care, but here is a good life lesson. Unlike Tai Lung, she had the humility to accept the role given to her. honestly this series is the best body positive movie I know. At first everyone mocks Po for his weight, but he doesn't get thin to be accepted, they accept that he's fat and that's not a bad thing. And the message of self love with the secret ingredient bit, amazing. And dealing with trauma is handled so greatly. This series is just wonderful in every way and I love it with my entire heart

    "Your story may not have such a happy beginning, but that doesn't make you who you are. It is the rest of your story, who you choose to be."
    This series is so good that it manages to make just a montage of clips from the previous movie into one of my favorite scenes ever. The music swelling as Po looks back on that life he has chosen... it gets me every time. This series will always be under-appreciated because it deserves to be talked about as one of the greatest trilogies.

      Kung Fu Panda 3 is the best in the franchise. In Kung Fu Panda 2 (the favorite of most people), Lord Shen attacked the panda village, but there was nobody to save them. In Kung Fu Panda 3, Kai attacks the village and Po has to save them. You cannot say that's not the most genius idea for a third installment of this franchise. One thing that people hate about this movie was the “disappointing” villain defeat. But I don’t think people exactly understand it. Po had the chi of all the pandas and his own chi. Kai usually takes the masters’ bodies along with the chi, but he didn’t when Po gave his chi to Kai. That’s why it was too much. He took the chi of a whole village pandas and a “Kung Fu Panda” at a time without their physical forms. It makes sense, people overthink it. Also, at the beginning, Oogway told Kai "The more you take, the less you have." Then what happens? Kai dies from taking too much. Also, Po was taught kung fu with food. Then he taught the village of pandas with their talents. The whole "turn you into you" thing wasn't a callback to the beginning of the movie, it was a callback to the beginning of the franchise. The first Kung Fu Panda. Most people like Shen the most, but General Kai is the best villain in my opinion. He may not have been intimidating, but he had really great villain lines. When Shifu said "Oogway, forgive me." Kai held up the chi of Oogway and said "What do you say, Oogway? Do you forgive him?" Also, his music was obviously the best villain music in existence. Not to mention his weapon, fight style, or entrances. Also, the first two villains were chased by Po and the Furious Five. But Kai would find Po no matter where he went. Po even said “There’s nowhere to run.” Kai felt very unstoppable, which was kind of intimidating. Another thing I like about Kai is that he was the only villain that never underestimated Po. When Tai Lung met Po and found out he’s the Dragon Warrior, he said “You? Him? He’s a panda. You’re a panda. What are you going to do, big guy? Sit on me?” When Lord Shen met Po, he asked Soothsayer “Do you actually believe this is the warrior destined to defeat me?” But when General Kai met Po, he said “You must be the Dragon Warrior.” I don't even need to talk about comedy, action, or animation in this movie. Everyone already agrees that comedy, action, and animation in Kung Fu Panda 3 is better than in first two movies. A lot of people complain that the Furious Five didn't do much but I think I need to remind people that this movie is in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Not "The Adventures of the Furious Five" franchise. I was happy seeing the Furious Five get a lot of spotlight it Kung Fu Panda 2, the movie wouldn’t be half as great without that. But I am extremely happy that they didn’t do the same thing for Kung Fu Panda 3. But I don't get how people think this is the worst or second best in the franchise. I think it's better than Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 combined.

    I was just about to rage about not mentioning the score for these movies. The elegance or intensity of every track is something that no other animated movies have nowadays, except for of course the HTTYD series (also scored by John Powell, with a well-deserved Oscar nomination for the first film's score) but the thing that amazes me is that HANS ZIMMER, the man who scored the award-winning The Dark Knight AND Frost/Nixon the SAME summer, chose to score a movie about a Panda who knows Karate, and just decided to make that his best score (i said it) astounds me. I could listen to those 3 soundtracks for days on end, they truly are masterworks.

There's always been something special about these movies and I'm so glad you put it into words today. And still there's so much left to be said, like Po's constant joyous optimism, even when he's being beat up by shifu, the fact that he's an outsider who feels just happy to be a part of kung fu, Hans Zimmer's score especially in the second movie (Po finds the Truth is one of the most powerful pieces of music he's ever created), the whole father son dynamic with shifu and Tai lung, shifu and Po, Po and his two dads! I actually really love that instead of the protagonist going through the change, it was shifu. Shifu was the one who had to understand that Po doesn't have to change. He does... people seem to take a oe size fits all approach to teaching which led to our misery and hatred of schools who destroy our creativity and craving to grow and learn, and that made us feel like we are broken when we aren't... its just our Shifu's refuse to take that several miles to understand exactly how each student will learn more effectively and efficiently... so, yeah. As a brown belt in a martial arts system that incorporates Kung Fu, I was impressed by the fact that it Incorporated real techniques taken from Crane style, Tiger style, Snake Style, Mantis style, and created the new one panda style which reminds me of bit of Drunken/Monkey Style.
    Not to mention the slightly "Samurai Jack" flavor, which I agree creates a
    perfect blend of Western and Asian influences.
    The things you mentioned about seeing the Divine influence on the world in happenstance and seeking the spark in every creature also has a deep resonance for me, a practicing Jew.
    Nicely done, now if I could only get my wife to get past Jack Black being in it and get her to to see the darn thing.

    i love this video, thank you so much for covering kung fu panda. i know it's a famous franchise, but yeah i don't think many people talk about HOW amazing it is either. i grew up with the movies, but it was only about a year and a half ago when i started deeply appreciating them...thanks to the soundtracks. the kung fu panda 2 soundtrack shook me to my core and "oogway ascends" from kfp1 is one of the most beautiful things i've heard. it was actually one of the first things i learned when i started playing piano!
    i love this trilogy to death. kfp2 is my favorite non-disney film, favorite sequel ever, and shen is my favorite non-disney villain. it's kinda funny how a 16 year old like me loves these movies about a panda that likes kung fu. i love this kung fu pandaissance, i would love to see more people make videos about it.

    It's funny you used a clip of Po floating down a river around 17:35 while you describe the concept of letting go of the need to control everything and accept "accidents." That's a very Taoist idea (which is one of the most important Chinese philosophies) and when I learned about Taoism in my college philosophy class, my professor introduced us with an excerpt from Winnie the Pooh where Pooh Bear was floating down a river, letting whatever happens to him happen. Just like Po was in that clip.
    I don't know if that was intentional or not, but after all: "There are no accidents."

It’s hard to learn or understand certain things when you already have certain variables that make you up when you just can’t learn to understand in that way, and being taught in your own special way is what truly makes the dream work with enough skill, you can make a difference. That’s a good thing anyone can learn from these movies. To be yourself and use your own special ways to be at an advantage over anything ❤

    One thing that I and many others noticed about Shen and Tai-Lung is that they represent two sides of the Yin-Yang. Tai-Lung represents Yang, the aggressive black side, and Shen represents the Yin, the graceful white side. Shen is whiter than Tai-Lung, making him look like the Yin compared to him, and his graceful fighting style and preference of staying back with weapons mixed with his beautiful feathers mimics that of the Yin. Tai-Lung is aggressive and charges at his enemies with utmost ferocity, and is a darker color than Shen, just like the Yang.
    This one detail alone is the best writing I have ever seen for an animated film, and that isn't even accounting for everything else.

    I don't think it's fair to include Shazam in the "Chosen One" montage. That movie was more against the idea of chosen ones, and how exclusive that sort of thinking can be. The ending is pretty much a subversion of that trope, as is the fact that the main character even received the powers he did. He WASN'T the chosen one, except in the sense that, with very limited time, he was chosen by default.
