Is it game over for Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad? | UpFront (Special Interview)

  • It has been described as Malaysia's political Game of Thrones: a fortnight of mind-bending political turmoil, triggered by the resignation last week of 94-year-old Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad after his coalition collapsed.
After being reinstated as interim prime minister by the king, Mahathir seemed poised to form a new government that may have sidelined his designated successor Anwar Ibrahim. But before long, Mahathir and Anwar were once again united in an attempt to form a new government, only to find themselves both on the outside looking in as someone else - Muhyiddin Yassin - was sworn in as Malaysia's eighth prime minister.
Muhyiddin is backed by the scandal-ridden United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) - the very party Mahathir ousted in the 2018 election amid anger over what is known as the 1MDB scandal.
Syed Saddiq, who was a cabinet minister in Mahathir's government, said what we are seeing in Malaysia is the formation of an "illegitimate back-door government".
"The fact that without Dr Mahathir's knowledge that his own colleagues decided to work together with the well-known global kleptocrats to form a back-door government and to take down the democratically elected Pakatan Harapan government, I think it's a truly sad day for Malaysian democracy," Saddiq said.
Mahathir has been accused by some of creating the political turmoil in Malaysia himself, by failing to keep his pledge to hand over power to Anwar. With no clear timeline ever set for the succession, many believed Mahathir would not fulfil his promise.
But Saddiq said there was an agreement to hand over power to him.
"There was an agreement to give room for Dr Mahathir to govern and then when the right time comes, to hand over power to Anwar, and the agreement was after APEC," Saddiq said.
"If Mahathir really was power-crazy he could have simply just remained as the prime minister ... Instead he stepped down, his moral conscience is clean, and he still fought to ensure that the democratically elected government will stay in power because of the people," he added.
In this week's Special Interview, MP Syed Saddiq defends Malaysia's political colossus Mahathir Mohamad.

"The reality is, the leaders who currently claimed government came in in the wrong fashion, where they presented the wrong numbers to the Malaysian King." - Syed Saddiq
Syed Saddiq conveniently left out that the King personally interviewed all the MPs to understand their position. His Majesty did not depend on just Muhyiddin or Mahathir or Anwar as his source of information. The truth is, the MPs were indecisive and jumping fence every hour. Malaysians are tired of your (politicians') shenanigans, so Tuanku's decision (which put a stop to the drama) is definitely welcomed by Malaysians. We support and trust our King more than politicians who can't even decide which side they want to be on.

The interview wasnt used. In the end. SD handed over by party leaders were the ones thats being used.
The interview was for YDPA to access the situation. It was a 1-1 interview. Its most probabbly in private. The results of that interview wasnt even brought up or been taken into consideration by the King when naming TSMY as PM.

      @@jangjaeyeon2.087
"The results of that interview wasnt even brought up or been taken into consideration by the King when naming TSMY as PM." And how do you know Tuanku did not take the information he obtained through his personal interviews with the MPs into consideration in making his decision? Were you privy to his decision-making process?
Whatever it is, it does not change the fact that Syed Saddiq conveniently left out this important bit of information from his narrative of the events. And it does not change the fact that all the politicians (both Government and Opposition) were changing sides every few hours. One minute they want Anwar, the next they want Mahathir. Considering how fickle and indecisive they acted, can we trust that they would not flip again?
It also does not change the fact that Tuanku is constitutionally entitled to make this appointment, especially when the MPs cannot make up their minds. Syed Saddiq conveniently left out the incompetency of the MPs that led to this decision. In your opinion, how long should we drag on without a PM, considering the alliances shifted every hour?

If you are YDPA, why you want to reconsider TunM as PM? He's the culprit for this chaos...he resigned, and wants to reclaim back to power immediately? The saddest thing, some people idolise him so that whatever he do no matter what they will simply favour him. Personally, I never like him before (UMNO) and will never like him now or ever. I would say it was a tough interview, and he handle it as best as anyone in his position could do, without reverting to cursing and demeaning demeanor.

People who voted for PH in GE14 knew that DSAI would be the next PM once TunM handover the power to DSAI as promised prior to the election. However, the delays and PM resignation have caused the political turmoil and the backdoor government took the advantage to form new government! Listen carefully, people want the fair, clean and progressive country! Bear in mind! M’sia is a multiracial and democratic country and voters supported the ideology of PH! Return the democratic rights to the people of M’sia!✊🏼

Rather than carrying out the manifesto on which he was elected, Dr Mahathir took his eye off the ball and also in the process failed to guard his back from members of his own party who were in fact renegades of the corrupt party. Mahathir started straying away into international politics eg picking on India in its internal politics and thereby losing massive income from India from sale of palm oil. He then started trying to head an Islamic group of countries which incl Pakistan the great holder of minority human rights etc. This ended in failure. Having been elected by nearly all the races of Malaysia he strayed into the lobby of people who wanted to give rights to one predominant race. He is the victim of the two-faced politics he was playing. By his own actions he had outlived his usefulness to Malaysia.
