For the red dress for Pete sake by the yarn and make the dress you want. There is no honor and cutting corners and ending up with something that won’t make you as happy.. I would order that yarn right away and just guesstimate because it sounds to me like you’re going to need a lot more yarn especially for those sleeves. I have been knitting for 69 years and I don’t think you ever stop making rookie mistakes. It’s all part of the process and sometimes it gets your heart started.. LOL! The dress looks amazing and it’s going to be a work of art that you will have for the rest of your life. You are so talented and you underestimate your talent a lot. Not today, life! Indeed! As hard as it is to find yourself in those situations, it is so gratifying to climb out of them! The many lessons knitting teaches us!

Tip- I add a stitch marker after every set of pattern stitches or every couple of pattern repeats. That way you won’t get far if you knit an extra stitch, etc. I also put a lifeline in every couple of inches or after a couple of pattern repeats after I have checked that it looks good. Then when I goof it makes frogging much less stressful. You are doing great. 👍
I’m about to start my first cable sweater and after watching a bunch of videos on knitting cables, that is definitely something I decided to do. I know myself too well! Easier to pull out thread than have to re-count something that I’m not confident on doing :D But Nora is doing great with hers! It’s turning out so pretty!
Been doing cable for a long time and I always get lost if I don't use stich markers. One for every repeat. And different colours for different things. Also makes counting stitches a lot easier.
I LOVE you dress. A super cool design. Great job in ripping back and figuring out how to progress again. Can't wait til next week to see your decisions on yarn, length, etc. Another great podcast!

Hi Nora, glad you got that dress sorted! I'm loving your comet deep space art yarn project! If the girls you're making for are cousins/siblings that hang out I might suggest making them all the coordinating hats and gifting them at the same time so they all feel included and can wear them together while they play in the snow. If they don't know each other then don't worry lol! Love the idea to put a fleece lining inside the hat to protect them from that sometimes itchy feeling you get from wool and angelina sparkle!
I always love a good matching hat moment! They don't know each other so I am going to do my best to push their personal style and favorite colors with the little details!
Oh the relief of them not knowing each other 🤣. I made that mistake once giving my younger cousins 2 completely different handmade items and they were so jealous of what the other had that I just learned to make matching items afterwards 😅. Extra bonus is you can spread out the timeline on those gifts too
I can so relate - I would put myself in the adventurous beginner category as well. As much as it is a bummer to have to rip back, I am finding that I get just about as much joy from figuring out a mistake and getting back on track as I do when I finish the garment. I love that about this knitting level. And I agree, hopefully the next level will include catching the mistakes earlier! Glad you were able to power through - your dress is just beautiful!

Good for you not letting the dress beat you! Wow, you scored big time on that Collage yarn! I enjoy your excitement about knitting and your creativity!
You should be proud of yourself. Your dress is going to be amazing! I love your videos. I’m a very beginner knitter. You give me confidence in my knitting. Thank you for being you!
omg I love that chunky yarn, it's so absurd 😂 So fun to have something fall into your lap you wouldn't have necessarily chosen on your own! You've inspired me to go to the thrift store and see what I can find 😊
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this as I have not read through all the comments. But if you do order more yarn, keep in mind that if you do anything in the new yarn (the dye lot will be different) you can get away with doing the sleeves and the bottom edging without it being obvious. The reason being is that the sleeves are off to the side and the bottom edge is in a different patterning so that will take the eye to a different thing than row to row color change. Your dress is beautiful. I am so happy that you stuck with it and figured things out.
I think we are on the same page!! I think I will try and hold out on knitting sleeves until I figure out the yarn situation. Thank you for the reminder!
One thing I did to let myself relax while doing pattern repeats is just put a few light bulb stitch markers on my needles every few repeats around the project. Not necessarily every 6/8/10 stitches or whatever, but maybe every 20 to 40, where I should be putting a specific stitch. If I slip that stitch marker and I’m on a column of knits that are supposed to be purls because I’m off by a stitch, I know I messed up in the last 40 stitches and need to frog it back. Something like this, even if it’s just one every 100-200 stitches or one on both sides of your row, might be worth it to save you the frustration of frogging back so many inches of progress! ♥️ maybe two colors of stitch markers for the staggered honeycomb, like a white one for the top of Honeycomb A, and a black one for the top of Honeycomb B, and you ignore the other one as you slip it, just focusing on “these rows are for Honeycomb A so this stitch marker needs to always be at the beginning of my slipped stitches” and you just knit past the other marker until you switch which repeat you’re on. Good job rescuing the project from the frog it and forget it pile!!
You are definitely not a beginner any more!! I can’t wait to see your finished Christmas dress! I am also interested in seeing the finished Knit Collage hat with the giant pompom! Sounds so fun!
First thing I would do is make the balloon sleeves the way you like them so any color difference won't be noticeable, and yes, if I were you, I'd order more yarn, as you can always make accessories with it.
Oh my goodness! I cannot believe you had to rip out so much of your dress. I would have thrown a tantrum, too. I'm so glad you slept on it and found your mistake; that takes real talent. Good for you! It looks amazing! And your “brushed alpaca” always makes me smile. Happy knitting 💚🧶💚 and Merry Christmas 🎄
I am glad I'm not alone in that! Such a frustrating realization, but so rewarding once it's fixed! The brushed alpaca makes me smile too! Thanks for being here! Merry Christmas 💛
Nora, I completely relate to feeling proud when you successful correct a knitting problem. I saw a bit of your struggles on Insta and was relieved you didn't scrap all that work. Very happy for you - that's how we learn, after all - and the dress so far is just stunning! Same for the kiddo hat. What a score with that yarn and how fun will a giant tulle pompom be?? omg can't wait to see it. Happy weekend!
Thank you!!!! I am so happy i stuck with it! It really is the best way to learn! I still can’t believe what a bargain I got-and I’m glad I get the chance to play with it for this price! Thanks for being here 💛
You could steam block the honey comb to see how much it will open up. If you order more yarn there maybe at a different dyelot and it might be noticeable, not sure if that would bother you or not. I've been knitting for 5 years now and you my friend are doing amazing! I still have not been adventurous enough to modify patterns. I've yet to try cables. Can't wait to see your dress it's beautiful so far!
I say order the yarn and do what you wanted originally. With all that work, don’t settle or you will be disappointed and you won’t wear it as often! If you have that wild yarn with 2nskeins left over, you should make yourself a wild knitting project bag!
The strand above the hole or opening is the cable row when doing the honeycomb pattern. I found the hard way after knitting a blanket with all-over honeycomb stitch. Your dress is looking beautiful!
Buy more yarn, do the dress, you will never regret it. The positive memories you have made in being able to fix the honeycomb will always be attached to the dress. Great job! Kim of Kim and Jonna did a whole cardigan out of the Knit Collage yarn last year. Looked pretty cool but yikes what a job. I think she got pretty tired of it too! Super cool find anyway and the littles will love the hats. Maybe a pom pom out of your hot pink boucle?
True true you are right! I will have to see if I can go back and find hers! Such silly yarn, but it’s too cute for the kids! I thought of the boucle too!!! We shall see!!!
Purchase more red yarn, make the dress you had envisioned! Wear it frequently after it is finished! Who says you can’t wear a beautiful handmade dress on a regular Winter Tuesday?
Yep - Do the sleeves; then go back to the skirt. And hear me out - I’ve envisioned this dress with high heeled black leather boots since you first talked about it. It would be so 🔥🔥
I have only done one cable project but I found it helpful to have stitch markers between each pattern repeat. That way if I knit an extra stitch or something, I’d know right away when I didn’t have enough stitches to the next marker.
Yes I have definitely done that in the past! W/o giving too much of the pattern away, I’d have to have a LOT of stitch markers for this one! I also think it’s possible that I dropped a stitch during a stockinette row and that’s what set the whole thing off 😅
🌴☀️Just starting video and…NOOOOOOOOO😩! Ok I’ll be back. Edit: DRESS: I’d start & finish both sleeves then continue body of skirt beloved 💗 Musselbrough: take the hat & remaining yarn & weigh it ( count how many knitted rows = half the gram amount ) Keep knitting till you reach half total grams then for the second half of the hat you’ll know how many rows to knit and will also have enough left for the decreasing. Hope this makes sense. I’m soooo glad you didn’t have to totally 🐸 the skirt of the dress whew! I’d say you’ve moved past being an intermediate knitter…actually to begin knitting with making wearable garments like tops and such is NOT intermediate knitting in my book 📚 WTG I’m so proud of your toolbox of reading your knitting. It gets easier and it makes me feel like I have on a superwoman’s cape every time I’m able to correct my knitting…it’s magic 🪄. I’m going to watch again now I really enjoy your videos ☀️🌴
Firstly, well done fixing your dress! That’s always a hassle but satisfying, you won! lol Art yarn is something I hadn’t ever paid attention to until recently. It’s definitely not my cup of tea but since I’ve dipped my toe into spinning yarn I can see the fun of basically throwing out rules and just going crazy with it.
Thank you! Omg I could totally see enjoying the process of spinning art yarn! I think it is much better suited to fun weaving home decor projects than it is to actually knitting with it lol. But fun to change it up!
I'm only halfway through the video - but I had a thought about your yarn shortage (just a brainstorm!): I know you want it the solid red, but you could put a white stripe in it? Maybe a white trim? Or another color you have in your stash. Ooh, like a silver or gold...hmm. It seems like you're going through the Fabel quicker than the Alpaca - maybe the big sleeves in just the Alpaca? Again, total brainstorms. Not even thought through, but you can always order more yarn! Just make sure you do helical if it's a different dye lot!
I know you said you don't want to buy more yarn for the dress, but if you find yourself receiving yarn of a different dye lot, you could use that for the sleeves. I think a slight contrast in the sleeves could look really cute (and intentional). Anyway, love your projects as always!
It looks like there are increases down the skirt for hips and butt, which might make it hard to determine how much yarn you will need if you use the data from the narrower areas that you have already knit. My heart goes out to you, I am eternally caught in yarn chicken hell. I admire your stamina knitting a long dress! 😘
Somehow there are none in the skirt! It is the most incredible sea of honeycombs that never increase and wait until you see the fit in the next podcast! This pattern is blowing me away by its simplicity!
Thanks so much for sharing your adventures with your beautiful Christmas dress! We’ve all been there and I loved how you gave yourself time to think your next steps thru…👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💚🧶
Dress is looking soooo pretty for you!! Have you tried it on yet? And the quickie hat is special!! I believe that kind of yarn is described as core-spun.
Thank you!!!! I haven’t 😅 I think I should this week! I have never been so conflicted on my feelings for something! I hate the yarn and working with it, but the FO is just too darn cute to stop!
Just get the yarn . :). For the curiosity hat, maybe make a pompom out of the fleece so it matches the lining? But the tulle pompom sounds incredibly adorable.
You’re right 😉 that could be so fun too! I need to know what a tulle Pom would look like, but I could try that on the next one if I’m not loving it! Thank you for the idea!
It sounds like with your dress your sleeves are a priority so it might be wise to put the skirt on hold and finish the sleeves. if you start running out of yarn at the end of the skirt it gives you a little more time before you need to decide if the length is acceptable or if you want to buy more yarn.
Make sure you measure the honeycomb stretched a little also, or block it because the weight of an entire dress could pull it out and make it longer as you’re wearing it. Honeycomb can be stretchy which could work in your favor
Funkie yarn for Funkie accessories! love it! so i was thinking with the 3rd skein you can knit up the tube (like your doing now) and only use about 1/2 and have it be a matching cowl set! ... very curious how that twill pom pom is going to look... can't wait for next update!
Hey gal ❤ your dress is looking great! If it were me I’d knit those sleeves now and then just knit your dress as long as you can afterwards 😘 whatever you decide will be great tho
I’m going with the person that said to knit the sleeves so you know what you have left to use to make the rest of the project. In another note as this is a one time wear you can frog back the entire dress after the event and make something else that you would wear more often. It would then off set the expense if you do have to reorder more yarn. But make sure you order the right yarn. I just ordered more yarn for my sweater because I also made a different size and when it arrived I noticed it was thinner. Sooooo right color wrong thickness. Needed DK got fingering. Facepalm!
Yes I need to get to the sleeves! I am having too much fun with the honeycomb 😅 ohhh noooo! At least you can always use a little fingering weight! I would be so mad 😂 hahah
Your dress looks amazing! I love the look of the fabric. Congrats on figuring out how to fix your mistake. I am always so thrilled if I figure out how to fix something 😆 I would do the sleeves next so you can try it on and get a better idea of what it looks like on your body. I think this dress would look better knee length but of course that is only my opinion. If you would love it more long, you should buy the extra yarn. It is a very special piece and should be exactly like you want it 😍
Thank you! I’m loving it too! So so smart! I really am 50/50 on the length! I think it could go either way- I definitely need to try it on with sleeves!
Girl! You fixed that mistake 😂 I would have probably just started over 😩. You make me want to start thrifting more for yarn. The last time I went I wasn't so lucky and only found acrylic.
Yeaaaa!!! You have no idea how close I was! Thrifting is sooo fun! It’s all about going as often as you can and you come away with a good find a small portion of the time, but it’s so satisfying when you do!
Your Christmas dress is fabulous. Have you thought about stop knitting the body and do the sleeves next to see how much yarn you have left for the body?
The Comet yarn is absolutely beautiful. If you need ideas of how to use it, I'd look for art yarn patterns. I believe that's what that type of yarn is called, so you should be able to find things to use it for.
I’m not sure if you’ve tried this or not - but you could weigh your dress before a honeycomb repeat and then weigh it after. That way you know how many grams of yarn a repeat takes and you can see how much yarn they will eat up.
@@akaNoraKnits I only know because of Knitty Natty here on TH-cam. She does math for all her projects and it blows my mind when she calculates stuff out with her yarn. She’s so good! Lol 😂 good luck!
Have you tried putting stitch markers in? Because this way you will know when you’re off when you get to the next stitch marker so let’s say five repeats the stitch marker, five more repeats, and a stitch marker, five more repeats, and a stitch marker, and so on.
I am very curious how you are doing the increases on the dress. If you have a stitch pattern of 10 stitches (for example), you can’t increase in the middle of the pattern because 11 stitches will not match the pattern repeat. This will cause your pattern to shift and not match the previous rows. This sounds like what happened to you. My suggestion is, instead of increasing your stitch count, is to increase the size of your needle. This will make the garment larger. Good luck. Also, on the yarn, I would sell it. Knit collage is definitely specialty yarn.
I was doing an all over eyelet pattern for the body of a sweater and the sleeves and it was kicking my butt because the way the chart was shown didn't translate well in my brain even though it was correct on stitch count. I had just not done yarn over and SSKs in isolation before so it felt like it wasn't mathing haha. I eventually figured it out, but I still don't know that I like the flow of a yarn over SSK.
Lace is by far my least favorite thing to knit at this point. Even just reading that stresses me out 😅 like you, I get it-but it just never translate coming through the needles!
I'm so curious, and apologies if you've answered this before, where do you get the knitted icons that pop up while you talk? They're so cute! If you draw them yourself, great job!
Have you considered reaching out to Drops to see if they’d be willing to send you yarn support? You have a platform, an audience, and influence!!!! It’s worth reaching out!!
You know what, I have not tried to leverage any of that yet lol! I guess you just made me realize I am even in that position 😲 thank you for the suggestion!!! 🥰
I just dealt with the same thing on a hat. Here is my Vlogmas Day 10 documenting what I did: th-cam.com/video/F8VpFNVNxkk/w-d-xo.html Glad you were able to work it out.
I would go ahead and order more drops yarn and get enough for the FULL length. I think if you went shorter, or did not order the extra yarn plus an extra ball you would regret it and not wear the dress because you were not happy
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE KNIT COLLAGE HYPE. beautiful as art but goodnessss it is not practical at all what so ever. But seems like you're turning your deal into a fun project. Just gotta say it though. Giant tulle pom pom...all I'm seeing in my mind is a loofah on top of this little girl's head 😂 I hope that's not the outcome!
“I wound up putting the project down and throwing a tantrum and sleeping on it.”
Hahahahaa I knew I couldn’t be the only one! 😂
I had to do that to a cardigan I was making. Put it in Time Out and then come back the next day to re-assess.
Same here. Not sure yet whether it's the tantrum or the sleeping that finally does the job. What you think? 😂
@@zephyraK I think it’s a combo of both! Gotta let the rage out before you have the mental space to think clearly. 😆
Re dress: switch now to making the sleeves. Then you’ll know how much yarn you have left and can then decudexre length
I was going to suggest the same thing! Switch to the sleeves and then knit the body until you run out of yarn.
????Oops. Meant decide length
I agree- do sleeves next.
Yes!! I definitely need to do this! Thank you!
Yeah I’m in this camp too! Do the sleeves so you have them done and then you can figure out the length from what’s left!

omg I love that chunky yarn, it's so absurd 😂 So fun to have something fall into your lap you wouldn't have necessarily chosen on your own! You've inspired me to go to the thrift store and see what I can find 😊
Absurd is exactly the word I would use!!! I do love finding yarn I wouldn't typically work with! It is always so fun to find these treasures! 💛
So so smart!!! Thank you for the advice!!! 🥰
You are definitely not a beginner any more!! I can’t wait to see your finished Christmas dress! I am also interested in seeing the finished Knit Collage hat with the giant pompom! Sounds so fun!
Thank you 🥰 so much fun on the needles right now!
Been there with the drama 😂 congratulations on emerging victorious, can’t wait to see you in that dress!
Thank you so so much!
First thing I would do is make the balloon sleeves the way you like them so any color difference won't be noticeable, and yes, if I were you, I'd order more yarn, as you can always make accessories with it.
Yes you are so right! Thank you!!!
Also, great job tinking back on the dress. 🎉
Thank you!!!
👏👏👏👏👏 great progress!!!! 🎉
Thank you!!!
I say order the yarn and do what you wanted originally. With all that work, don’t settle or you will be disappointed and you won’t wear it as often! If you have that wild yarn with 2nskeins left over, you should make yourself a wild knitting project bag!
You are so right! Thank you! And great idea for the crazy yarn!!!
The strand above the hole or opening is the cable row when doing the honeycomb pattern. I found the hard way after knitting a blanket with all-over honeycomb stitch. Your dress is looking beautiful!
Ahhhh! Thank you so much!
Omg catch me in my home drinking coffee on the couch in this dress on a Tuesday morning 😂
Yep - Do the sleeves; then go back to the skirt. And hear me out - I’ve envisioned this dress with high heeled black leather boots since you first talked about it. It would be so 🔥🔥
YOU HAVE READ MY MIND! Love that!
Well done you for having the patience to figure that out and fix it!!! That would remain in the "naughty" corner if it was mine 😅😅 xx
The willpower was strong! Must be the Christmas magic ✨ hahha
I’m so glad you didn’t frog the dress!! It’s looking beautiful!!
Thank you!!!
I also think it’s possible that I dropped a stitch during a stockinette row and that’s what set the whole thing off 😅
Fun episode and so glad the frogging worked out so well! That purl soho yarn is totally amazing and ridiculous ahahah
I definitely had fun with this one! 🥰
the dress is lovely. And now put in life lines periodically if you aren't doing so.
I never even realized you could do that! Something to look in to! Thank you!
🌴☀️Just starting video and…NOOOOOOOOO😩! Ok I’ll be back.
Edit: DRESS: I’d start & finish both sleeves then continue body of skirt beloved 💗
Musselbrough: take the hat & remaining yarn & weigh it ( count how many knitted rows = half the gram amount ) Keep knitting till you reach half total grams then for the second half of the hat you’ll know how many rows to knit and will also have enough left for the decreasing.
💛💛💛 yesss I need to do the sleeves! Sooo smart for the Musselburgh! Thank you! 💛💛💛👑
Firstly, well done fixing your dress! That’s always a hassle but satisfying, you won! lol
Art yarn is something I hadn’t ever paid attention to until recently.
I never even thought to do the trim and sleeves in a different color! Totally could be a solution! Thank you!
I know you said you don't want to buy more yarn for the dress, but if you find yourself receiving yarn of a different dye lot, you could use that for the sleeves. I think a slight contrast in the sleeves could look really cute (and intentional). Anyway, love your projects as always!
Such a great idea! Thank you!!! 🥰
Sometimes a sleep is all you need!
Good job 👏 you learned a lot and that’s the best!
Thank you! I sure did!
Yes I think you are right!!! Thank you!!
Love the hat!
Make sure you measure the honeycomb stretched a little also, or block it because the weight of an entire dress could pull it out and make it longer as you’re wearing it. Honeycomb can be stretchy which could work in your favor
Very true!! Thank you!
You could knit the sleeves of the dress, then go back to the skirt and knit the skirt as long as you have yarn.
Yes I think that is the best idea at this point! Thank you!!!
Funkie yarn for Funkie accessories! love it! so i was thinking with the 3rd skein you can knit up the tube (like your doing now) and only use about 1/2 and have it be a matching cowl set! ... very curious how that twill pom pom is going to look... can't wait for next update!
Yes exactly! Such a good idea!!!! Thank you!
Hey gal ❤ your dress is looking great! If it were me I’d knit those sleeves now and then just knit your dress as long as you can afterwards 😘 whatever you decide will be great tho
Hellooo!!! Thank you 🥰 I think you are right! thank youuuu!
If you google knitting increase calculator, it helps you space the increases/decreases evenly across the row.
I wish I knew that before the hours we put into finding those numbers 😂 thank you!!!
Yes!! I definitely need to just go ahead and get to the sleeves! I’ve just been enjoying the honeycomb so much 😅
Nora keep knitting it's an heirloom piece surely.
I love this take 💛 yes you’re right!
The Comet yarn is absolutely beautiful. If you need ideas of how to use it, I'd look for art yarn patterns. I believe that's what that type of yarn is called, so you should be able to find things to use it for.
Thank you!!
I’m not sure if you’ve tried this or not - but you could weigh your dress before a honeycomb repeat and then weigh it after. That way you know how many grams of yarn a repeat takes and you can see how much yarn they will eat up.
Y'all never cease to amaze me! Great suggestion! Thank you so much!!! 🥰
@@akaNoraKnits I only know because of Knitty Natty here on TH-cam. She does math for all her projects and it blows my mind when she calculates stuff out with her yarn. She’s so good! Lol 😂 good luck!
Your dress looks awesome!🎉
Thank you!
Have you tried putting stitch markers in? Because this way you will know when you’re off when you get to the next stitch marker so let’s say five repeats the stitch marker, five more repeats, and a stitch marker, five more repeats, and a stitch marker, and so on.
Yessss I should do that!!! I think I need to keep my stitch markers closer when I am knitting!
Have you ever had the feeling that someone came into your house and moved everything over an inch? 😮 Including your knitting?
Hahahaha yes! Like, totally couldn’t have been me! 😂
Thank you! I use a crafty little combo of ProCreate, AI, Canva and Adobe Premiere Pro to create them!
This would involve frogging, but maybe you could knit the inner layer of the bodice in a different yarn? Since it will not be very visible...
I have considered that possibility. I think we are just too far into it to save approx. a ball of yarn. But I like your thinking!!
❤❤❤
Have you considered reaching out to Drops to see if they’d be willing to send you yarn support? You have a platform, an audience, and influence!!!! It’s worth reaching out!!
You know what, I have not tried to leverage any of that yet lol! I guess you just made me realize I am even in that position 😲 thank you for the suggestion!!! 🥰
BTW Nora darling, I believe it's pronounced Faybel. As in A piece of creative writing x
Yes!! I am embracing the silliness of making it sound fancier than it is lol 😂
@@akaNoraKnits and we love you for that 😘
I messed up being a stitch over on a cardigan I knit this summer. It was Drops Northern Mermaid.
Nobody has noticed yet 😂
Hahahaa I have totally been there! If I was closer to the end, I would have done the same !
Angelina Sparkle✨ 😂
I just dealt with the same thing on a hat. Here is my Vlogmas Day 10 documenting what I did: th-cam.com/video/F8VpFNVNxkk/w-d-xo.html
Glad you were able to work it out.
I would go ahead and order more drops yarn and get enough for the FULL length. I think if you went shorter, or did not order the extra yarn plus an extra ball you would regret it and not wear the dress because you were not happy
You are so right! 💛
Contrast sleeves?
I have no idea why I didn’t think of this!
Please start knitting sleeves now
Hahahaa yes I need to!!
Hahahahahhaa omg!!! You are so right!!! I will do my best to avoid the loofah look! Hysterical 😂😂😂
Stop now. Knit sleeves. Then all remaining yarn can go in skirt. As you move through the skirt you can decide if you need more yarn.
