- Started the electric and insulation in my metal building /garage workshop, along with the start of the insulation, framing and wall paneling. Then sealed the concrete floors. That's pretty much what I did with mine, which was 26x50x12 in VA. I used 2" thick foam boards, same stuff you have. Mine had vertical walls so I had to cut a bunch of square insulation then friction fit in each section. Rented a lift for the roof, which made it way easier. I used power grab on the roof bracing and friction fit the pieces there, then ran a strip of plumbing strapping across where it pieced together in the event the power grab ever lets go it can't fall all the way to the floor. Noticed a huge difference in winter. We'll see what summer does. I have a mr. cool diy mini split in mine. Kept it comfortable in winter. Good video!

@THE HEIGHTS I'm doing the same thing in FL how is your building holding up now?
You have the right idea on how to insulate. Of course the weak points will be the framing which will conduct the heat inside the building. The air gap works well in combination with the radiant sheathing on the air gap side. As long as the whole inside is covered this way, the ceiling is the most important to cover with those radiant barrier boards though because the sun is constantly hitting the roof. Great video.

I used Seal Kote Epoxy seal Armor Gray on my floors. Man they look amazing. I did it right though. So many shit reviews from people that don't do shit by the book. I etched the concrete, let it dry for 36 hours. Applied Concrete Bonding Primer. Waited an hour for it to set. As per instructions I applied the epoxy seal in 3 coats over 3 days. Day 4 I applied 2 coats of clear seal. Total investment with having my own paint rollers and extension rods was under 500 bucks. What a difference. I primarily like it because as a mechanic, every time you drop a nut or bolt on the Concrete, I swear the damn concrete is camo for nuts and bolts.

this is perfect! I am actually planning to do the same with a mini split, but I might dry wall mine instead since I actually plan on using it as a gym/office. Metal sheds by far are the cheapest! almost a 60% reduction in price. look forwarrd to your updates

Finally lol I ran in to the same problem of seeing insulation videos of people in cooler climates. I’m in S. Louisiana, so I will be trying to cool more than heat.

Can you provide some information about how well your insulation system is working in its current state?
I would like to see a price comparison with what you will total spend and the difference in spray foam, it doesn't appear that much more for what you get long run and much better insulation, structural strength and quit, plus the saving in your labor.

Good job, i will do the same, probably attaching foam to boards like you put over steel. My frame is 40mm and i think i have to put 40mm foam to reduce more noise aswell compare to 25mm foam board. What screw did you use to attach 1x4 and then plywood to them, thanks for pksting this video, very helpfull.
In heating or cooling more is better with the insulation. The difference between R5 and R10 is very apparent in comfort and electric bills. Since you have 2 1/2" two inch rigid board with a 1/2" air gap still gives you excellent use of the radiant barrier and airlfow. You can then downsize your mini split or whatever cools the unit for reduced initial cost and operating costs as well.
Understood there’s no doubt in my mind 2 inch foam board would’ve probably been the best case scenario unfortunately during the pandemic when I was doing this it was just extremely hard to find especially the amount I was needing so I went with what was available… Only plan on using the air conditioner during the hot summer days on occasion even the radiant barrier just reflecting some of the heat should help out on days where I keep the bay doors open… 👍🏼

Any updates? I’m in the process with my metal building. Just installed a 2 post lift. Need to do insulation as well. I’m in Florida too. My building is a total of 42’x35’, 12’x35’ is sectioned off.
The center metal roof truss should be at least 16 feet across to support the weight of the roof.

As of now it’s OK but I haven’t gotten around to finishing insulating the roof I was waiting for materials and cost to calm down a bit… Should be getting around to it really soon as long as there’s an air channel for it to dry out an escape through the roof vent it shouldn’t be an issue

Really well done series. Great info with some nice laughs. Any regrets with Big Buildings Direct? Considering them for an AG building in East Texas, which won’t be finished nearly as nice as your garage. I’m use to red iron metal buildings but costs currently are outrageous for those builds.

Just some self tapping screws but I did actually pre-drill all of the holes first with a small drill bit

Right on, doing the same, but I’m sitting here trying to figure out if I need something behind the rigid foam boards? Like strips of wood or insulation to maintain that air gap? Or will the foil tape be sufficient? I have the 3M 3340 heavy duty foil tape. Thanks for the content!!! @Ozarkbuilds
I think the foil tape will be enough however it wouldn’t hurt to throw a couple pieces of foamboard of the center to make sure it keeps it off the wall long-term…I personally foil taped some of the foam board sections to the actual wood framing if it was bowing out towards the exterior wall too much to play it safe but either way I think the airgap would be fine

I only pulled permits to get the building everything else I’m doing on my own not going through the permanent process if I was than yes electrical would be getting inspected… I am fortunate to have an electrician in the family help me
Just had my 30x30 slab poured shew concrete is expensive! I did the double bubble insulation for now.

@@The_Heights I'm still waiting on the installation crew to put it up, I like that plywood look! I was thinkin about doing interior wainscoting with galvanized metal roof panels and then peg board over the top. Idk just depends on budget. Great looking garage buddy!

Thanks… It’s doing fine but because it’s not complete meaning the ceiling isn’t finished being insulated and enclosed it’s hard to judge it at the moment no supply and demand an increase in price for materials has slowed things down hopefully I can finish it in the next month or so… But I’ve moved into the space and started using it and I’m super happy with everything hopefully post an updated video in the next week
How did it hold up with condensation? I going to try the same but ima try bubble insulation as vapor barrier then foam board insulation and sheetrock
I haven’t finished enclosing the ceiling yet but so far I don’t have any issues where I’m at here in Tampa Florida
I'm about to embark on a same project but I'm wondering what are the options for insulating the garage doors? I know regular doors can be easily insulated but you lose space for the tracks. How would you insulate rollups? I do like how much clearance rollups provide.
Unfortunately it doesn’t look like there’s a ton of options specifically made for the rollup doors you have to get creative if you search around on TH-cam there are some decent ideas I’m still thinking about which route I’d like to go

Appreciate the post. Did you have to do an electrical inspection? I'm looking into wiring a metal building but I'm reading different things.
When it comes to all of these things, I’d recommend going up to code and regulations of your city/area and doing what you think you’re most comfortable with
What screws or bolts did you use to attach the 1x4 to the metal frame direct? Some kind of galvanized or zinc?
If I remember correctly, they zinc self tapping screws
Is the foam board attached to anything or just wedged between the metal framing?
Wedged between the framing and foil taped all the way around to the framing on the edges
How well did this method work as far as keeping it cooler for the summer?
Haven’t quite hit the summer temperatures yet but in general the building tends to be a good 10° cooler or warmer depending on the weather outside I definitely notice a difference so far… Should be adding the mini split soon

Cover the air gap at the bottom of the wall with insect screen so the rodents, wasps and bees don’t use the air gap as their home.

When adding the pieces in the corners to attach the 1x4 to, are those 2x6 that are cut down? Looks like you drilled or countersunk for the self tappers? Great job! I am modeling my shop after yours and I am in Florida, too.
In the corners those were just some scrap 2 x 2 that I had so I would put a piece on each side to create a corner… but yes, you could rip down a 2 x 4 or whatever just makes it easier when it’s not a large piece that you need to screw through👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Being a metal building what’s it like in a stiff wind? I have friends with metal shops and they can be loud.
Once I got the ceiling, insulated and completely sheathed, it’s made everything a lot more quiet inside in general… Wind isn’t an issue... it gets a little noisy with heavy rain, but even with that it’s not too bad with the noise

Majority of the time here in Tampa Florida I will be cooling the inside the condensation would be on the outside of the building if any condensation does happened on the inside of the walls that’s what the airgap should control between the metal siding and the insulation allowing it to dry out

So I having a 20x60 steel garage built and im trying to get a estimate for electric to be installed but now luck everyone is saying the building has to be up so I don't know what to expect to pay?

Won't moisture behind the foam board eventually lead to mold and rust?
In my climate, the moisture or condensation, is on the outside of the metal, the majority of the time, and that’s the whole point of an air gap the foam board never touches the metal, allowing air to flow up the walls and out the roof vent drying out any moisture 👍🏼
How did you fasten the romex to the studs? Surely you didn't leave it flapping in the breeze, contrary to NEC regs, right?

I honestly can’t remember exactly but everything was 8 x 4 sheets of plywood I think for the side walls and the ceiling I ended up using around 50 sheets of plywood so it would be basically the same for the insulation
how many shop lights did you use and how many lumens for how big of a shop?
Right now I just have to four panel LED Amazon specials… Once I get the ceiling finished I will have canned lighting and different types of lighting all throughout the building

How well does that foam board insulate against the noise of grinders, table saws, etc?
I do have neighbors I do most of the loud stuff during the day and with all of the doors shut it’s really not that bad. You do hear the noise but it’s not excessive. I used 1 inch foam board insulation in the walls and ceiling and then plywood on top of that which has helped reduce the noise drastically

This wasn’t that particular brand and it wasn’t a kit… But it’s basically the same thing this particular company builds everything for you on site

I haven’t actually installed a permanent AC mini split yet but I used portable air conditioners this past summer and it was able to do a decent job keeping things cool so I would say yes, especially along with closing in the walls and ceiling with plywood… If I were to do it again, I may use 2 inch foam board to get the best out of my money

The install will be exactly the same process as the sidewalls except I will be using moisture resistant drywall since plywood is insanely expensive and I don’t plan on hanging anything aside from some lighting on the ceiling… But the process will be exactly the same, the flat supports that run down the middle is where the ceiling will end so I can leave a center channel for hot air to escape through the roof vent
@@The_Heights Thanks for the response, that’s what I was thinking? I was going to do plywood as well, because that’s what I have an abundance of, but I was thinking about going back with double bubble foil over the whole ceiling/roof for a clean white look!

Well luckily I was able to get plywood at $12 a sheet of market place which is obviously not the case these days with that being said I’m about 14/15k
But I think in general materials have gone up so the price of the building may have gone up and obviously it depends on what concrete cost at the moment I got a great deal from a family friend

Yeah it’s ridiculous. I got really lucky by waiting it out at the time I was doing it I think I spent around $12 a sheet for most of it buying at secondhand from leftover materials.

That’s definitely going to depend on where you live and when you’re doing it Concrete is a lot more expensive right now and I had a family friend in the Concrete business give me a great deal so mine was about a 50% discount at $2400 at the time

The building itself which included installation and some generic engineered drawings was around $8400 24 x 25’ building with a 10 foot sidewalls and 2 - 9 x 8 garage doors
Don't forget to install ethernet
Luckily, my house router is only about 25 feet away and with a signal boost I get great Wi-Fi out there/reception
If I were you, I wud have dived the space into two floors, since even if the upper floor is a crawl space, it cud have been useful. It is such a waste of space to keep the top part as nothing
What is the height of the building?
I have 10 foot sidewalls the peek at the center is just over 13 1/2 feet
I think the exterior peak height is right at 14 feet

Was not better to put the insulation attached to the building wall instead of leaving the gap??
If you were using spray foam, that would completely attach and seal, any gap between the metal and the foam, then yes, but with foam board, there’s always gonna be a chance of condensation building up between the metal building and the foam board and you can end up with moisture or mold or things like that long-term leaving the air gap between the metal and the insulation allows that area to always dry out and the insulation being closer to the wall paneling keeps the interior temperature cooler or warmer, depending on what you’re doing
You Get a different answer, depending on who you’re talking to, but that’s the theory behind the air gap also allows for heat to travel up and out
@The_Heights example,, I put spray foam on my lower holes of the building and some holes of the side.. I left the top one open because I didn't had the ladder at that point.. my shop it is in south carolina, I have a portable A/C unit just cool my working areas, and portables heaters.. my shop usually stays doors open when Im working on it... 24x24 size..

@@The_Heights Everyone seems to be saying closed cell foam is the only thing that works for metal buildings... I'm in NC and finally got a guy out today to give me a quote and he told me to do open cell foam, which just confuses me now.. I may just end up doing the foam boards
@@fucuszullanti7877 yeah because I am in Florida. I’m not overly concerned it doesn’t get very cold here. I mainly doing it for the heat up in your area. I would definitely say if you can afford it. Spray foam is definitely the best way to go… Mostly everybody that I’ve seen in your area that does it has used close sell spray foam, but I would definitely get a few professional opinions on which type if you go that route

Heaven gone through a summer here yet since the insulation was finished… But as of now I have had no issues. However I am not heating the space I’m only going to be occasionally cooling the space throughout the year so I’m not sure how that will affect your situation compared to mine. I think with the airgap everything should be fine
