Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition): PHONE vs. TABLET Thank you to Audible.com for sponsoring my video. Please visit www.audible.com/Erica to get "How to Win Friends and Influence People", Free. These are principles that I grew up on and they have helped me with what I do today, reviewing =) They were a precursor to my major in college. Many people ask how I started doing what I do and they begin with the principles in this book!
I still have one of these (WiFi version) running LineageOS Android N, and while my Shield Tablet K1 beats it pretty handily in gaming, it doesn't even shed a candle to the inking. Even with OneNote, the inking works very well, especially for a late-2013 device.
Your reviews are so amazing. So detailed! I mean like seriously. The colour accuracy of the screen. The way you analysed them. Its so freakishly geeky! I love it!
Erica, i know this has nothing to do with this video ( awesome btw ) . But you are the only youtuber i know that does really in-depth reviews about screen gamma and what not. I am really curious to hear your thoughts on the ipad mini 2 which is said to have the same gamut as the ipad 2. (63% instead of the usualy 100% sRGB that comes with retina screens ). Anyways, please thumbs up guys so she can see! it is really interesting.
I was curious about how much the actual system OS takes away from the main storage? I will most likely go for the 32 GB but out of morbid curiosity I just wanted to know how much of the OS takes away from the main storage.
This is an excellent review, great job! So far all I read or saw was completely missing the key and exclusive features of this tablet and how it actually works. Here, they're demonstrated in good depth, it's convincing. Handwrite recognition is very impressive. Several times I could hardly decipher yours and it got it right :) It seems like a very solid pen-enabled tablet with additional _Android_ capabilities, something different.
9:53 oh wow they added a search capability to Settings! That's clever and a very good idea. It's the first time I see this in a manufacturer ROM and I hope others will copy that. MIUI ROM had search in settings for a while tho.
Very well done Erica. I have them both, and really enjoying learning them both. I look forward to viewing more of your videos. Wish they were downloadable, so I could watch them on the plane! Anyway, thanks for your efforts.
One of the most in dept reviews i've seen on a tablet ! ...btw a i igree with you about this lag on the exynos variant, that happens on every exynos version of samsung movile devices , not only on tablets. Perhaps they need to spend more time optimizing this processors.
I personaly use the Surface 2 with a typecover 2 for college. Best in multitasking in the tablet class, full USB 3 port, HDMI out, micro sd, true sterieo (although not too loud). and Office with outlook.
One of the most complete and detailed review on TH-cam, you are Awesome, very knowledgeable and professional keep up the great work, it is your video who made me decide to buy my Samsung galaxy note 3 instead of the tablet thanks a lot Erica :) thumbs up
Good analysis of the 2 devices. For what it's worth, I have the notes 3 and the notes 2014 and I use them interchangeably. And the seamless connect between the two is really great. The note taking capability of the notes 2014 is awesome and I use it tremendously for work. All in all both of them are a decent buy.
Erica, Really enjoy your reviews, have had the Note 3 (Verizon) and love it, a literally huge step up from my S3--- just gave my Note 10.1 to my daughter so I can get this new Note when tax time comes around--- keep up the great work!!
Thanks for reviewing the Note 10.1! Another useful and informative review as usual. Personally, I LOVE the S-Pen and it's suite of features! While I like this tablet, I decided to split the difference between the Note 3 and the Note 10.1 and buy the Note 8.0 instead. (I'm rockin' the brown 3G version!) Although the display is nothing special, overall I'm still very happy with my Note 8.0! The size hits the sweet spot for me. Small enough for easy portability, but the added size is much more efficient for writing. Since I bought the 3G version, (I live and work in Shanghai) I also use my Note 8.0 as a phone! (However, I did buy the Sony SBH52 bluetooth headset to make answering phone calls more convenient.) BTW, I'm looking forward to downloading an audio book soon. Thanks for the recommendation.
Thanks for the great review I currently have the note 3 and use it for note taking but next semester I am seriously thinking of upgrading to something bigger and think I am going to get this now. Huge fan of Papyrus note taking app!
The answer of course is to get both. Sometimes you just want a bigger screen. As to the yuck comment about physical buttons, I wish there were more. Especially the volume at the very least. So much faster than having to bring it up in settings, even if it's just one or two selections away.
Great video! recently just started following you, and you do this better then most! very good work.. whats that wallpaper called? on both the note 3 and tablet? its looks gorgeous:)
You said LTE and 3g model iv been looking everywhere for it where can I buy one and will work if I pull out the sim from my sprint phone and insert it to the tablet please help ?
Samsung's new diamond-shaped pentile matrix interests me, because in practice, printed ink on paper uses a diamond-shaped matrix of dots, not a squared-off grid like an RGB-striped LCD. If not for the reduced number of subpixels, wouldn't a diagonally-tilted matrix of RGB pixels actually appear more clear, especially at high DPI? Just a thought.
Thanks Erica that was very helpful. I just buy a used 10.1 with LTE but not as impressed so been debating whether to get the phone version or just get a regular phone and a surface pro 2 or 3 I am so confused. By the way you are really beautiful
Hi Erica, thanks for the great review! I wanna ask you a question... You mentioned that your Note 10.1's got the latest mk1 update, did you get it by ota or just flash it yourself with Odin? And if the latter, I hope the flashing wouldn't trip Knox? Thank you
One question on the note 3, I have bluetooth headphones , what is up with the interference with wifi?? Speeds slow down dramatically. Is it just the note 3's antennas merging into the same frequency or something??
Please please tell me if you had any lag in multi window and while switching orientations. Hoping you got all the firmware upgrades. . Please please. . It's crucial. This tablet got it all except for the lag I'm hearing so much about
Having a bit of lag on a 10.1 inches display with that resolution is something to be ... "expected". I really wanted to buy this tablet. I have a S4 Exynos and it's a rocket! I think I'll wait for a 12.2 inches note (or at least anything above 11.4 inches) with 4gb RAM, 64 bit processor, USB 3.0, perhaps a faster than 2.1 mAh charger and, if it's not too much to ask... a 4K display ;)). I know some of this specs will come this spring, but I'm not sure we'll see all of them until next fall. PS: and android 4.4 KitKat or 5.0 Lime Pie (perhaps next fall)
Hey Erica . Nice video . I have the SM-P605 Version with Snapdragon with the 4.42 Kitkat update . So far I haven't had any lag with games or normal stuff. I got mine in Italy and use it at my English School. Sorry that the wi-fi versions have lag . I have 1 question for you; should I get a galaxy note 3 in your opinion ? I have a galaxy note 2 with the Kitkat update
@Ericagriffin I have a not 3, but I'm wondering if u have any issues with the screen sensor? Like during a call I cannot activate the screen with any of the power or home screen buttons until the other person hangs up? Any ideas?
Erica not long ago I bought a Note 10.1 (2014 edition). I haven't been able to use it but I have a question, will this tablet get an upgrade to the Android system kitkat?
hey,,, should i get this tablet or wait for the new note 10.1 because this tablet has alot of downs and samsung did not improve the hardware downsides as well as the software ones like the lag !!!! on octa core devices !!! ,,, so do you think there will be an improve in next generation note 10.1?
I got the 32GB 10.1 2014 to use for college. For taking notes and annotating, it's great; however, it wasn't too well rounded in my honest opinion. I returned mine this weekend and got the new iPad Mini with Retina display because while the Note has better functions for multitasking and productivity, the iPad is more well rounded as far as apps go. I only used the Note 10.1 in class and found not much use for it outside of class due to the lack of optimized apps and games for the resolution. The design and ergonomics also made usage very uncomfortable. In addition, my Note came with horrific quality control. The thing creaked and had weird marks around the bezel of the screen. Definitely did not feel like I got $650 worth of benefit with the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014.
I typed very fast with the virtual keyboard on the Note 10.1 and type at pretty much the same speed with the Mini. Obviously though, you can't see as much as what you wrote compared to the Note, but it gets the job done. But anyways, I never used the Note 10.1's keyboard in class, I wanted to use it as a replacement for a paper notebook but I found using a stylus and a touch screen to reduce the speed and neatness of my writing and sketching. I've decided to keep pencil and paper and use my iPad for reading news, games, videos, and annotating books for my classes.
Hello Erica , I'd like to thank you very much for that review and I have a question please ... If I wanna use internet via both wifi and 3G what version of the tablet should I buy ?? thanks again Erica :)
Surprised to that this can take calls and text! I am torn between this, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, the Asus Transformer Pad TF701, and the iPad Air.. all of which has LTE versions..

Great vid Erica. I'm sitting on the fence about hardware buttons (menu, home, back) versus software buttons. I love my Nexus 7 2013, but I often give a "Grrrrrr" when I see the software buttons taking up all that space on my already small display. And yet I'm feeling ya when you talk about accidentally pressing the hardware buttons. Neither is ideal IMHO.
Erica nice video I have both phone & tablet on T mobile 4glte model, my tablet mostly freezes at times don't know why so I rooted it to remove bloat ware now it's awesome still waiting on how to root my note3 w/out tripping knoxs so when I do sure my phone will work just as good as my 2014 Edition note 10.1
Completely agree with the lag thing I have the exynos version here in India and it's very bad sometimes my screen just freeze badly and have so many complaints about the exynos version it's just not good you are right
I have experienced no lag on my Note 3. I always enjoy your videos, although I admit to being a little embarrassed that I don't understand all of your tech talk. Guess I should study some more. 😜
Hi erica, You said that Samsung should get rid of the three buttons on the lower edge of the screen. @lc tesla i agree. im not sure why samsung would go backwards with 2 subpixels/pixel. i dont believe any of the other companies use pentile on their 1080p. i just dont understand why they are cheating the customer
Pls review indepth of ipad air and ipad mini with retina display me considering to buy it and pls let me knw either i shld go for ipad air or note 10.1 2014 edition
Hey Erica; I'm trying to get some opinions on something here. What do you think of the "Drag And Drop" feature for the Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 10.1? The reason why I ask is I gave Samsung that idea. Everybody else who reads this comment; I would like for you to tell me what you think of that idea. Thanks!
Really on the fence between getting the Note 3 and waiting out the next Nexus 10 or getting the Note 10.1 + Nexus 5 Currently using S3 running 4.4 with ART (which just flies)
First of all thank u for this review. I am asking if i can capture a book then the tablet/phone turning it into word document so i can edit it or adding it into other document
Erica I would recommend u to get an ipad mini or ipad Air (I'm a really heavily usage on my ipad mini and u get around 10+ hrs of screen on time and one time I got a really impressive 21 hrs of screen on time)!

Great job

LCD = Liquid Crystal Display. So calling it an LCD Display, is like saying Liquid Crystal Display display. Now it'll be your pet peeve too...
Samsung galaxy note 3 is awesome thanks for creating a review for this phone
This is my first time watching. I'm getting one of these and just found out everything I needed to know. Fantastic video. Subscribed.
I just started using this tablet again and wow so much has changed

Fantastic and great job. Please keep them coming. I recently picked up a Note 3 based on your other review. Thanks for the tip about Audible.

Erica Griffin ,,hello erica great review..what game were playing on the note 3 @ 14:30,,
are there any design patterns on the bezels of either white or black 2014 10.1?
Are the sensitivity s pen of note 10.1 2014 and note 3 the same?

Erica Griffin, Do you use a screen protector on your galaxy note 3?
Awesome review of the SGN 10.1 Erica. Thanks for the Audible.com Book Offer.
I was just debating on getting this tablet, this review helped a lot. Thanks
Can the white subpixel contribute to the image at all? What does it do, show a shade of gray like a monochrome image?
Cool I love the note 10.1 2014 but can you compairision with iPad Air?
I have a note 3 n love it should I get a note 4 or keep my note 3 and get the note tablet??
Erica not long ago I bought a Note 10.1 (2014 edition). I haven't been able to use it but I have a question, will this tablet get an upgrade to the Android system kitkat?
Erica where is the iPhone 5s review love your reviews
Can it make regular phone calls?
How does this compare to the surface pro2? price ranges are different depending on models but what about functionality? especially for students
Thumbs up for How to win friends and influence people. great book
wow you do great reviews where do you get all the awesome products that you review. you must have allot of cool products. I do think about the cost.

I see how the negatives of a pentile display. Are there any advantages, or positives to having a pentile display?

Are you still reviewing the nexus 5 fully?
Hi Erica, can you do a review of Note PRO 12.2 LTE and perhaps also a video on comparing the Note PRO 12.2 LTE and the 10.1 2014 LTE? Thanks
Hello Erica ,
I'd like to thank you very much for that review
and I have a question please ...
If I wanna use internet via both wifi and 3G what version of the tablet should I buy ??
thanks again Erica :)
Wow that's really amazing!!! Thank you for the tip, I really enjoy Dale Carnegie!!
also note 3 charge faster when plug into wall or into PCusb3 ?
Can you do a review on the MacBook Pro 2013?
This may some stupid, but are the pens enter changable?
Surprised to that this can take calls and text!
I am torn between this, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, the Asus Transformer Pad TF701, and the iPad Air.. all of which has LTE versions..
I have the original galaxy 10.1 and I absolutely love it, but its just a little clunky here and there, I like things to have a more sleek and smooth style. I was thinking of getting the new 10.1 but after your video maybe I should just wait for the 2015 edition. Thanks :)
You specifically mention this as a good tool for students which is exactly why I was looking at it. However would the new ATIV 3 tab not be a better option given that it comes with Office preloaded? In an ideal world the ATIV Q offers the best of both worlds with the full blown windows 8 and android but that appears to be on hold. As much as I love the android OS I just think for my college needs that the better option is the ATIV. Your thoughts???
Hi Erica, what tablet would you suggest
Hi where can I get that wallpaper from?
please tell me if z2 xperia tablet is better or galaxy note 2014 please tell the reasons as well please help

Completely agree with the lag thing I have the exynos version here in India and it's very bad sometimes my screen just freeze badly and have so many complaints about the exynos version it's just not good you are right
I updated my s3 to 4.3 ersion and the power button lags.Du you get lag or it is youst the phone
I have experienced no lag on my Note 3. I always enjoy your videos, although I admit to being a little embarrassed that I don't understand all of your tech talk. Guess I should study some more. 😜
Hi erica,
You said that Samsung should get rid of the three buttons on the lower edge of the screen. But in this case the lower edge of the screen will be used for the software buttons of android, this would lead to a decreasae of the useable screen area.
When buying my SGS4 the first point to decide for this phone were the buttons on below: this prevents from accidently getting on the button area with my thumb.
plausible or not ? :)
when people talk about thickness... do they typically include or exclude the camera protrusion..? please answer if you know, thanks.
I never count it.
So what is the next big phone that will be coming out in the near future?
@lc tesla i agree. im not sure why samsung would go backwards with 2 subpixels/pixel. i dont believe any of the other companies use pentile on their 1080p. i just dont understand why they are cheating the customer
When will you do a review on Asus Padfone Infinity 2 A86
Pls review indepth of ipad air and ipad mini with retina display me considering to buy it and pls let me knw either i shld go for ipad air or note 10.1 2014 edition

Thanks!
No gorilla glass on mine, mine scratched really fast. I did use it as a tray though and put a glass on it.
Really on the fence between getting the Note 3 and waiting out the next Nexus 10 or getting the Note 10.1 + Nexus 5
Currently using S3 running 4.4 with ART (which just flies)
Does the Note 8.0 stand up to its big brother, or should I wait for the Note 8 2015 edition?
First of all thank u for this review. I am asking if i can capture a book then the tablet/phone turning it into word document so i can edit it or adding it into other document
is there any difference between these two except for screen and phone
Erica I would recommend u to get an ipad mini or ipad Air (I'm a really heavily usage on my ipad mini and u get around 10+ hrs of screen on time and one time I got a really impressive 21 hrs of screen on time)!
