  • The biggest mystery in Wind Waker is Hyrule and how restricted it was. However there is sufficent evidence to show that it may have been explorable. Today we try to solve this long running mystery.

      It's pretty much a 1:1 concept; an ocean (of clouds) with small islands dotted around with some inhabitance, and sections of Hyrule below you get to explore. I'm pretty sure it was said before by some zelda dev that a lot of concepts from prior games they didn't use would be recycled into newer titles, so this completely checks out.
      And I bet the kind of separated Hyrule we got in Skyward Sword would have been exactly how they did it for Wind Waker had they gone that way. Maybe the temples would have been a set piece for the region, but the entrances would have been above the water...or maybe everything would be done sub-surface like the subsequent title. Maybe even people living under the water still; lost souls perhaps??
      I'm speculating like crazy, but it's just that interesting to think about.

  • @Dorito_Djinn
    @Dorito_Djinn 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

    Really great video! You've been putting out some bangers recently. I agree with everything you said here and have some additional thoughts surfacing!
    4:45 the castle with the moon, look at the sky. It's drawn with wavy lines running all across it behind the moon indicating to me that it is in fact underwater and the moon is shining through. It'd be closer to the surface being that high on a cliff allowing the moon to be seen. The presense of the full moon and ghostly flames lining the stairs makes me believe this location might've acted like the ghost ship but down in hyrule.
    4:55 the (what I assume is a) wandering trader is wearing a similar hat and bag to the gorons in the final. My theory is that Stovepipe Island was the original home of the gorons considering the hot springs iconography and doodle on the page. When both concepts were scrapped they were combined and repurposed.
    The gerudo desert is so interesting to me because it implies desert enemies, the only of which we have is a boss and his minions. I wonder if the small moldugas have any sort of left over AI for spawning or acting independently of the boss to indicate they'd appear on their own? The desert was definitely meant to be traversable and seemingly the lead up to the final dungeon so I could see the molduga boss battle originally taking place here too. I always thought it felt off in the original dungeon.
    Also it's just crazy to me they were actually planning a whole Hyrule. I bet you're right and the original plan was: first 3 dungeons would be the sages, 4th was tower of gods to unlock Hyrule, then 5-7 would be the sages temples and 8 would be Ganon's Tower in the desert. You'd go collect the sage, bring them to the warp at tower of gods down to Hyrule and travel across Hyrule with them, using their powers, to their temple. Clear the temple, exit at surface entrance ready to get next sage.
    I can't wait until early versions of Wind Waker leak one day with some remnants of this development period left!

    • @TheKabuto90
      @TheKabuto90 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I don't think there are any early versions with the cut content aside from maybe some early models and unused objects. The vast majority of it just seems like theories and ideas that never really made it past the planning stages. The desert stands out as having actually made it somewhere into actual development but even that was likely scrapped before they even had any playable builds considering there's absolutely zero collision and the environment isn't even connected.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you! Been trying really hard this year. To answer each point:
      4:45 Yeah it's why I added that note since it looked like waves there. Moon probably wouldn't look sooo dramatic in the final game I think but it's probably stll peak through in a way like the sun does
      4:55 Doesn't really look Goron too much. Ears and nose a bit too point for me but the theory on Stovepipe Island (which I covered in my last video) is something I believe.
      I can imagine the Gerudo Desert could have still held the Gerudo themselves. Being that they allied with Ganon, they too ended up punished to live in underwater Hyrule. But the Molduga boss fight here would be hella fitting. Maybe an evolution of that fight even with a sort of "Molduking" like in Breath of hte Wild
      Yeah it would be very fitting of normal Zelda tradition too of the second "world" you go too to hold the other set of dungeons, so this could have been the case
      Here's hoping we see those one day!

    If that vast desert was going to be traversable, there would have to be a horse or vehicle used to traverse such a vast landscape.
    I’d propose having the Gerudo Desert be traversable by boat just like how Link does on the surface. The lore explanation would be that the desert sands have become a viscous quicksand (either through the flood or “evil Ganondorf magic”) which makes travel by foot impossible, but is sailable by boat using the winds.
    Still, there would HAVE to be something else to find and do out in the desert other than go straight to Ganondorf’s tower. And if there aren’t any little islands, caves, treasures, etc. to find out there, then the desert itself becomes a gigantic waste of time.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I guess depends on how empty the desert would be. If empty, I can see them doing either a Sand Sea kinda theme of turning sand to water like Skyward Sword and sail to it instead, or maybe go the BOTW Sand Surfing route.
      Alternatively if it wasn't gonna be so empty and many some civilization like the Gerudos were there that you could go to as a stopgap, then I can see them having Link go on foot. This being my theory in that they likely would have added more to it than just be absolutely empty.

      There is a decompilation of the wind waker in progress, just think about it for a moment, once ocarina of time was decompiled it didnt take long before modders started crafting their own zelda games out of it, project indigo comes to mind, think of how astronomically different it is from original ocarina of time, we could get modders to add this stuff in. In fact with wind waker being as beloved as it is it wouldnt surprise me if someone remade wind waker and incorporated the scrapped concepts in there, such as jabun's dungeon. As we know WW was rushed in the develop that’s why ichthusk was destroyed and jaboon hided in prologia and that’s why they made the tremendous triforce searching quest at the end of the game. I think that this is also the reason why they skipped the path through the dessert to Ganons tower. They likely hadn’t enough time to finish so they just cut the way at the cave entrance. But I’m not sure if they wanted to make a whole Hyrule under the sea that you could travel.

    As for why the castle seems to be in a wrong location, I recall hearing at one point that the people of Hyrule relocated it from its original position. Since this takes place in the timeline where Ganondorf takes over Hyrule and demolishes the castle to replace it with his own, this makes sense. They probably put it in Lake Hylia, which is why it's floating above a lake there, and it would line up with Ocarina of Time's map (since the Gerudo Desert is right next to Lake Hylia).
    But that's a theory and I don't even know if it really was relocated. The Zelda Wiki doesn't mention it, and I don't think anyone in the game does either. It's the most reasonable explanation though.
    Anyway, I'm honestly glad they cut out making Hyrule explorable. Wind Waker is all about moving on from the past, and just doing what Ocarina of Time already did years prior feels lame. Especially since sailing your boat is the best part of the game, so why cut that out in favor of just... walking around?
    Also, the tree section at 5:30 was probably turned into the Forest Temple from Twilight Princess. It also takes place in a forest with MASSIVE trees, which you even need to jump on as Wolf Link at certain points. Just like Link in the image :)

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yeah I agree that people likely relocated since there was no water whatsoever around Hyrule Castle in OOT. Lake Hylia would make the most sense. tbh explorable Hyrule being removed I don't think was the team wanting to move on from the past since the gmae still heavily seems to rely on OOT nostalgia haha (with TP going even harder), but in the context you mention, yeah it can work as a message.
      as for 5:30...hilarious thing is that for a while I kept skipping that picutre cause I thought I was looking at Twilight Princess art with how similar it looked haha. Likely was repurposed for it

I remember getting to that point in the game and I was like alright cool, triforce pieces now, there's going to be a bunch of dungeons and stuff...but no...

    My belief is that lower hyrule was discovered by caves like those other 2 that were supposed to take you to hyrule. My guess is at some point they they scrapped traversing lower hyrule and chopped together what we have today. Leaving very hidden remnants of this. The desert cave proves something of that however we will never know and even if we were to find out, what are we actually going to do with that knowledge?

    I could believe them cheating the angle on Ganon's tower and skipping a walk through the tunnels on the simple grounds that the game was rushed. A fact that's more apparent during the later parts of the game.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Diving by the games lore wouldn't be so possible since there is wayyy too much to cross (and a barrier) to get into Hyrule minus the entrance at The Tower of the Gods

      @TheObsessiveGamer  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wind Waker Unflooded looks amazing! But yeah it isn't 1:1 or rather it's really up to interpretation since we don't actually know what Hyrule would look in proper scale for Wind Waker. I know the maker of that has said he's taken a lot of inspriations from BOTW to do this
