11:16 is so important. I don't want videos like this to enamor surgery for any prospective medical trainees. Medical TV shows already do that enough. Other specialties (non-surgical ones) are just as important and challenging as surgical specialties. Remember that all specialties have to work together in order to provide the best care for our patients!
@@everydayjay Depends on what you define as challenging. But no, not really. While the hours may be better in medicine, the workload is not any less. Internal medicine residency is widely known as one of the most challenging ones to go through
And i don't know where you're from, but Peds, Surgery, OB are all known as more challenging than Medicine. Maybe if you're comparing with dermatology or radiology
@@everydayjay Medicine thinks about everything. On surgery, I'm there asking about the electrolytes and they're all like "Medicine deals with that. We don't care about that." That's the difference in workload
I really want to go to med school, but that means I will be on my own, living, sleeping, talking on my own, my family will be far from me(I have a huge family) and it is gonna be a challenge, but if thats what i want i am going to do it.
I've always had the vague idea of becoming a surgeon, but I wavered on it quite a bit as a 1-3.1 year med student. I really didn't know if the lifestyle sacrifice was something I was willing to go forward with. However, on my first day of surgical rotation, there was an emergent case of a very young patient who required an open appendectomy (patient was to small for laparoscopic procedure). I was invited to sit in and that single small experience solidified my desire. I was originally thinking neurosurgery, but I'm now leaning more to cardiothoracic, paediatric, or transplant surgery. Definitely not plastics tbh; it's just not something I can see myself enjoying that much. What I really want to do is operate on conjoined twins, or even witness an operation on conjoined twins. It's been something I've been absolutely fascinated by since I learned of the condition as a small child. I've always been fascinated by the macabre and by physical deformities, for some reason. I think it's partially because I was terrified of them as a child (though I felt awful and still feel awful about that), and I just love working with my hands. I only hope that my grades and ability are good enough to carry me through to residency. The only non-surgical specialty I'd consider is forensic pathology because I love true crime and the macabre
I'm only a ninth grader but I really want to be a surgeon, and it kinda scares me hearing you say that its going to be challenging. But that's just the reality I guess I will never give up.
Thank you Sounds like the two most frequently sought specialties are cardiothoracic and neurosurgery. Heart and lung surgery. Surgeons come in a variety of specialties, such as general surgery, brain surgery, and cosmetic surgery.
I am so excited for this video! I have wanted to be a surgeon all my life! Thank you so much for this series it's awesome! I am a senior in high school and I feel so greatful that I discovered your channel! Right now I am very interested in possible being a Cardiothoratic surgeon, neurosurgeon or maybe a ob/gyn.
I’d really love to be a cardio thoracic surgeon! It really does look awesome. But, like some of my doctors have said, your interest can change in med school.
I, too, am going to be a neurosurgeon and as we have both the same drives, I would like to share other of mine: •in neurosurgery, the tissue you deal with is very unique and irreplaceable place where you: -Move -Speak -Think -Remember -Feel •Nervous tissue is very special, without altering function much you can remove: -All of a spleen -Entries limbs -Most of a liver It is nice talking to you, King, Have a wonderful day/night.
@King I would suggest having a much stronger drive, especially if you want to go into a complex career like neurosurgery. There are hundreds of careers where you can help people and learn about the human body. So why neurosurgery if I may ask?
Clique no1 wanting to learn more and being pushed to learn more is one of greatest drives of scientists and doctors which makes us find out more..... no 2 I believe the brain is more powerful than people even think... we underestimate the brain too too much, so going into neurosurgery is a way for me to learn more about the brain and so on....
@@irene.5798 Probably because he's watched too many TV shows glamorizing neurosurgery. Wait until he actually shadows it. The anatomy is not quite as glamorous as Grey's Anatomy makes it to be.
Cardiology with highlights on procedures of transcatheter valvular replacement, stenting of coronary artery disease and peripheral blood vessels, catheter-based treatment for acute pulmonary emboli and acute ischemic limbs, ablation on all types of arrhythmias (including VT/VF), renal artery denervation, and device implantation
Surgery is awesome but it takes a LOT of your time and dedication. As a Mum to a little girl I gave up surgery just before specializing. It was amazing to experience it... but no regrets deciding against it.
Not me, but my close friend (my only friend really). He's working and planning really hard right now for the future, to become a surgeon when he's older. He says he wants to help people out and save lives. I don't know what type of surgeon he wants to be though. Very proud of him, he got into his dream Highschool and is now working a job to save money for college and other things that will benefit him for the future. He told me when he's sad or bored he watches things that include performing surgery because it makes him feel better and excited. I remember I had asked him a couple of questions and one of them were, "What do you look forward to most in the future?" he replied with "I look forward to achieving my goals in life that benefit me and my family." He also, in a way, likes getting sick because he likes to treat himself as a patient and cure himself. In all, my g is a great guy and I will always be here for him no matter what.
It's been a while since I last watched this, had to watch it again for some motivation! Thank you so much for this. Aspiring to be a trauma and critical care surgeon!
lol i’m really young and it’s been my dream to be a pediatric trauma surgeon for almost five years and i am literally not gonna give up until i save a child life one day :)
Surprised you didn't mention ENT here. It's the field I'm most interested in, and although I doubt it'll get the support from others I would love to see a dedicated video on some of the less talked about specialties!!
I'm a dentist and I'm currently in the residency of Oral and Maxillofacial syrgery. It's weird that you didn't speak about it. Looking forward to see it in next videos.
I would appreciate it if you did a vid on becoming a massage therapist. My leading drive is to give patients a restful and enjoyable experience, such that they are refreshed and at peace with themselves🙏 Keep up the great work!
Another potential limitation of being a surgeon is there are activities one may have to refrain from participating in due to the risk of damaging the hands. This includes things like changing a tire because turning the lug wrench could damage the hands. A surgeon (or anyone else) may want to keep an impact wrench in his/her car in case the need to change a tire occurs.
I'm Cristóbal and I'm in first semester of Med School. Nevertheless, I know I want to pursue surgery as my specialty. I find myself very interested in neurosurgery, thoracic surgery and traumatology! Your videos are a great inspiration and a learning platform :)

Hi there I am uk student currently in secondary school and your videos give me motivation to carry on working hard to achieve my goal of becoming a general surgeon.
I'm in Year 11, going into college soon. I'll probably end up studying Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science A-Levels and I'm hoping doing those well enough will be enough to get me onto a Uni course which I can use to get into the medical field. Thanks for this video; I think surgery is the right path for me if I commit to medicine.
To the middle and highschoolers who are commenting: This is the best moment to be thinking about your future. I'm 20 and I deeply regret not finishing highschool and not going to college or university. Please don't give up!! Wether you want to become a surgeon or other careers give it your all. And if you're struggling with learning don't be afraid to reach out to a psychologist or professional that can help you. I think anything related to medicine is a beautiful career, it's not just about the money but about helping people. If you are considering it please do it. I wish you all the best ❤
I've always wanted to be in the medical field, it was not until middle school I decided that I would become a surgeon. My backup would be anesthesiologist lol, as close to the O.R as I can get. I'm a fan of Greys Anatomy, but notice all the errors. I don't use the show as an inspiration either. So don't worry, I'm not gonna fall in love with a patient and cut their L-Vad wire so they are moved up the transplant list. [That happened in the show] I do my own research and learn what goes down in the surgery realm. The idea of being able to go into the complex areas of the body to save a life is amazing. There are times where things go wrong, but we have to remember we aren't Jesus 😂. I'm a freshman in highschool about to entire second semester. My grades are not the best of the best, but just seeing my grades improve from 1st to 2nd quarter is pushing me improve more. I will succeed :D
@@smartone128 I’m a sophomore now, and I can’t really give an accurate number of what my grades were last year, because i can’t really remember 😂 but my GPA unweighted was 3.89 so mostly A’s (?). I really don’t know what to do when I grow up. Im only 14 so I know I still have time. But I actually cant think of any jobs I want to pursue. My father is an electrical engineer and so will my brother be in a couple years. They say if I have nothing then I should choose it as well since it pays nice. But it seems so boring and I don’t want to sit on a chair all day while staring at a computer. it doesn’t seem exciting and is boring. Recently i’ve been thinking of maybe being a surgeon and this video just makes me want to even more. As it seems like it’ll be a fun and exciting adventure (and pays a lot haha) except near the last bit, cause i want a family and all that. anyways yeah i’m only 14 so ill probably forget all about this in a couple weeks. thanks for the video! really helpful 😊I’m sure i’ll figure this out somehow lol

My mom was encouraging me and asked if I wanted to become a surgeon one time, then I was like no, but after watching this video about the job and risks of being a surgeon, I decided that it seems quite interesting to be in that position. So in conclusion, I want to go to college in order to pursue a career and get a degree in surgery.

I know a cardiothoracic surgeon that is also a single mother and she manage to support her 2 kids financially and have enough time to take care of them. Still, you do have to be very efficient and productive to do all of that and you'll probably have to sacrifice something in different areas of your life. Anyway, you're not bombarding me, I'm glad I can help😊
I’ve always loved helping people. A neural surgeon would be awesome.
Other specialities are as important but probably not as challenging.
@@everydayjay Depends on what you define as challenging. But no, not really. While the hours may be better in medicine, the workload is not any less. Internal medicine residency is widely known as one of the most challenging ones to go through
The workload can't be greater in medicine. How can it be when surgeons do medical PLUS surgical management whereas IM specialists only do the former.
We don't care about that."
That's the difference in workload
I really want to go to med school, but that means I will be on my own, living, sleeping, talking on my own, my family will be far from me(I have a huge family) and it is gonna be a challenge, but if thats what i want i am going to do it.
I want to be a dermatologist or gastroenterologist. These videos are amazing! They are both very competitive so I hope I become one of them
I've always had the vague idea of becoming a surgeon, but I wavered on it quite a bit as a 1-3.1 year med student.
I'm in 11th grade and I feel you! Let's not give up on our dreams!
me too
I m in 9th rn..
Thank you
Sounds like the two most frequently sought specialties are cardiothoracic and neurosurgery.
How’s it going for u so far
surgical oncology is my dream 🤍🤍 pray for me I’m in 8th grade hope I make it
Not really a challenge if you want it.
@@haeshienwoods it's still challenging even if u want something. The path of a surgeon is not easy
I’d really love to be a cardio thoracic surgeon! It really does look awesome. But, like some of my doctors have said, your interest can change in med school.
Elijah I want to be a Cardiothoratic surgeon!
yo that makes 3 of us
Please do “you want to be..” for ENT and neuromedicine 🌹
I really liked ur new series its very helpful
Make a series on cardiology and cardiac surgeon ..want to know more aboit it
I also want to know more about cardiac surgeon.

Yes l agree with you
I'd love to see "So you want to be a ..." video for cardiology and dermatology! Thank you!
One of those is coming this Saturday ;)
Im interested in being a neurosurgeon and one of my drives is the eagerness to help people and to discover more about the human bodu as a whole
I, too, am going to be a neurosurgeon and as we have both the same drives, I would like to share other of mine:
•in neurosurgery, the tissue you deal with is very unique and irreplaceable place where you:
-Move
-Speak
-Think
-Remember
-Feel
•Nervous tissue is very special, without altering function much you can remove:
-All of a spleen
-Entries limbs
-Most of a liver
It is nice talking to you, King, Have a wonderful day/night.
@King I would suggest having a much stronger drive, especially if you want to go into a complex career like neurosurgery. There are hundreds of careers where you can help people and learn about the human body. So why neurosurgery if I may ask?
Sherlock Holmes thank you for this... I’ll remember it
Clique no1 wanting to learn more and being pushed to learn more is one of greatest drives of scientists and doctors which makes us find out more..... no 2 I believe the brain is more powerful than people even think... we underestimate the brain too too much, so going into neurosurgery is a way for me to learn more about the brain and so on....
@@irene.5798 Probably because he's watched too many TV shows glamorizing neurosurgery. Wait until he actually shadows it. The anatomy is not quite as glamorous as Grey's Anatomy makes it to be.
"Not all calls are created equal" you nailed it !
I have never seen two similar cases of appendicitis in the operating room, not one.
It would be a dream come true to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. I would love to feel the thrill of doing a heart surgery
Your time-managing is so good. You can make videos while you're busy with work and study. I wish I could do.
I'm only 13 years old and yes I want to be a surgeon since the person that inspired me to be a surgeon was my mom's friend who is a surgeon
Please do Urology
Im an aspiring Urologist doctor and it would be awesome to have a video on Urology and urology surgery / surgeons
Surgery is awesome but it takes a LOT of your time and dedication. As a Mum to a little girl I gave up surgery just before specializing. It was amazing to experience it... but no regrets deciding against it.
i’m in 8th grade but i know that i want to be a trauma surgeon. i’m going to work so hard in high school so i can get into a really good college.
@LiLing B Same
Same but im still struggling to choose any career path
Me to but am going to be cardiatric surgeon
In all, my g is a great guy and I will always be here for him no matter what.
an emergency medicine "so you want to be" video would be awesome! Thank you for the amazing content
It's been a while since I last watched this, had to watch it again for some motivation! Thank you so much for this. Aspiring to be a trauma and critical care surgeon!
I'm in 8th grade and go to a healthscience and engineering school and I'm watching this I want to be a surgeon.
You never talked about an Orthopedic Surgeon that specializes in Sports Medicine. I’d like to know more about their lifestyle.

Dr J honestly I feel like you should give a shot at a voice acting if you like that ofcourse !
Surprised you didn't mention ENT here. It's the field I'm most interested in, and although I doubt it'll get the support from others I would love to see a dedicated video on some of the less talked about specialties!!
Great aspiring video Dr Jubbal! Could you do one on neurosurgery, plastic surgery, or dermatology?
I'm a dentist and I'm currently in the residency of Oral and Maxillofacial syrgery. It's weird that you didn't speak about it. Looking forward to see it in next videos.
“So you want to be a Radiologist”! :)
I love your "So you want to be..." series. Thanks a lot.
Can you please make a series "So you want to be a Registered Nurse"?
Entering Medical school next year🙋🏽♂️
good luck! you will love it! Study Hard!
I would appreciate it if you did a vid on becoming a massage therapist. My leading drive is to give patients a restful and enjoyable experience, such that they are refreshed and at peace with themselves🙏 Keep up the great work!
I want to be a general surgeon when I get older and I'm only 10
You definitely can! Work hard and you can do anything ❤️
You can do it ❤️
Just watch greys anatomy 😉
Another potential limitation of being a surgeon is there are activities one may have to refrain from participating in due to the risk of damaging the hands. This includes things like changing a tire because turning the lug wrench could damage the hands. A surgeon (or anyone else) may want to keep an impact wrench in his/her car in case the need to change a tire occurs.
Emergency medicine would be awesome!
I want to be a General Surgeon because I want to face my fear. I also love watching surgeries. Soon I will be one of them!!!
Oral and maxillofacial surgeon pleasee!!
Yes, I rarely ever see that.
I am a 9-year old girl wanting tp be a neurosurgeon and you have inspired me❤❤❤
We can also thank Dr. Halstead for creating over 24 hour call as well
I'm Cristóbal and I'm in first semester of Med School. Nevertheless, I know I want to pursue surgery as my specialty. I find myself very interested in neurosurgery, thoracic surgery and traumatology!

I would love to see one of these videos for a trauma surgeon. Thats what I want to be in the future
Good Choice! I am an Orthopaedic Trauma surgeon.. its awesome. Ive done some day in the life videos you might like..
Thanks forwarding this to my daughter now
To the middle and highschoolers who are commenting: This is the best moment to be thinking about your future.

[That happened in the show]
I do my own research and learn what goes down in the surgery realm.
All the best 💞
I wish you good luck!! Dont give up!
What are your grades? If you don't mind me asking.
@@smartone128 I’m a sophomore now, and I can’t really give an accurate number of what my grades were last year, because i can’t really remember 😂 but my GPA unweighted was 3.89 so mostly A’s (?). Now, I am learning from home and it’s been incredibly difficult. I’m trying my best, but I have a C right now. So 6 A’s a B and a C. :)

for the last 3 years i’ve been studying anatomy and i’m only 14 - i have found a website giving me questions and lessons on anatomy and have grown to know many terms. i have a goal to become a pediatric surgeon. i take it very serious and would love to get a video about it, thank you.
Pediatric for the win! We get to get cut up children
shayla marshall sounds so morbid but yes, cutting up children and putting them back together 😂
Whats the website you use?
Where you study anatomy 🤔

Plastic and orthopedic surgeons would be awesome
Orthopaedic Surgery is awesome!

I'm really interested in surgery and can't think of myself doing anything else. That being said I'm still in undergrad and about 2 years out from applying to medical school. However, I've been teaching myself to knit and crochet to learn more dexterity skills. I'm most interested in either Ortho-, Cardio-, or Neurosurgery. Thanks for doing these very informative videos so we know what we are getting ourselves into if we pursue certain paths.
