The stuff starting from notes mapping is quite confusing. Reaper 6.26 shows C3 for 48 note (which we chose for Kick) but sequencer maps this note to C2. Later when we are switching patterns with midi-keys, it's also 1 octave higher than selected in sequencer. Otherwise really nice tutorial.
This fixed why I couldn’t hear a kick! I made both the sequencer and the kick C1 and could not figure out why it wasn’t making a sound! When I changed the sequencer to C0 it made a sound finally! Thank you! 🎉
Great tutorial, thanks Kenny. I watched both this and your other "first drum beat" video. I must admit I don't quite see why one would use the sequencer, given it's possible to do everything just by creating MIDI notes in a MIDI item - either playing them on a HW keyboard, or just painting them in. And it seems like the UI for the MIDI item is a bit nicer to work in than the sequencer one; and you have to use a MIDI item to trigger the sequencer anyway. But of course it's always good to know about all the options available, and probably more advanced sequencers than Megababy have other advantages vs just using MIDI items.
anyone knows why i get C3 instead of C2 when i type 48 to choose the midi note that trigger the sample? then the C3 is not the kick on the sequencer, i get it on C2 like here even though it is C3 when i choose the note in the fx settings
I had a problem with the samples "echoing". I would add the first sample and things would work fine then copy-paste add the 2nd, 3rd etc and all of the copied samples would have a very strange sound, not the sample sound. I found that my up to date version of reaper changes the "mode" setting from "Sample (ignores MIDI note)" to "Note (simitone shifted) by default. if you have weird other worldly sounds coming out of your sample like you are summoning demons from the deep make sure mode is to Sample (ignores MIDI note).
As others found, note C2 was C3 etc etc regardless of what it says I found the sound by laying notes in the sequencer and sweeping the green keyboard bit until i heard them, they were all grouped around C1 D2 etc regardless of them actually being C2 or 3. Hope this helps. A little confusing. Otherwise another good vid KG, thanks.
This video is GOLD!!! I wanted to turn WAV files into midi. I can make a bunch of WAV files from my drum machine, or use some samples from a disc I bought on Ebay years ago with 29,000 drum samples. This is going to be different than anything I've ever done. I always program my drum machine with the exact speed I want & make a wav, then transport it to reaper. Now I can use wav samples & turn them into midi in reaper.
I'm leaving a solution i couldn't find in the other comments. Using the sequencer, even after you set up the last trigger it will keep playing the sequence indefinitely. A solution i found to stop the sequence is to set up an empty pattern. Say pattern 15 which can be triggered by D#5 i believe. Leave that pattern empty and then trigger it via that midi trigger like D#5. if you only have 2 drum patterns like pattern 0 & 1, then you can leave pattern 2 empty and trigger it with D4. If you don't want drums until a certain point in the song, make sure your first measure of the song has that empty pattern trigger and then change the trigger to a filled in pattern where you want the sequencer to start.
I did mine in reaper V6 and was able to match 8 bars pretty well. My kick was mapped originally to C3 in the sampler as others have suggested here. The way I resolved it was to just ignore it in the sequencer and put the kick at C2 like in the video. It's an interesting way to make drum beat- I have a million drum samples, just not a million years to do it in.
Note starts are about 12 below what yours are: for example C 3 = 48. So when I select a note in the midi sequencer it corresponds to a different sound, for example C3 = shot 1 instead of snare.
For those who can´t silence the sequencer even when there is not midi track, create an empty secuence, then create a new midi sound (copy and paste like on the video) and select the note that triggers the empty secuence
I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong. I've done this tutorial more than once before and for some reason this time it's just not working for me I've even gone through and completely restarted the tutorial. I'm 4 days deep into this track I'm working on so I'm not starting the track over. For some reason the track with the sequence drums on it will play pattern 0 no matter what even if there's no midi event on that track. If the effect is on it will play pattern 0 no matter what. Unless I open the effects window and manually switch it to beat one and in that case it'll just play that forever and ever and there's not even anything on the track. I had to use mute envelopes to get it to be quiet until I wanted it too but then when I wanted to switch patterns it just doesn't do it it just stays on pattern 0 forever. The only way I could get it to switch to a different pattern would be to create an all-new track copy and paste my sequence to beat and then use a mute envelope to mute the first sequence and unmute the second sequence at the right time which is a totally unacceptable work around. Does anyone know what the hell is going wrong
@@justinmcfeeters951 have you tried assigning the different patterns to different notes and then drawing the notes on a midi section of the recording time-line? If so... Hmm.... Lmk

Great tutorial as always, Kenny. You might want to change the title to include the RS5K and Megababy, which might help other users... then again, I understand why you left it out. Better for total Reaper beginners!
I was following step by step, almost everything went all right but C4 (etc) did not change the sequence pattern, all bars ended having pattern 0. I have double checked and got the same results. Maybe some version differences? Mine is 5.0 x64.
I'm having the same issue. The sequencer works and has multiple patterns, but the midi notes do not change it. How does the midi played get to the effect? There must be a missing setting or step not revealed.
I had the same problem. Seems like the octaves can be misaligned. I found out that putting the trigger notes starting from C5 worked for me (even though the megababy plugin said C4).
I wish we could divide tied notes, instead of only being able to divide notes based on the grid. Like if my grid is by 1/16ths, I'd like to be able to also make 1/16t. Or if the grid is by 1/8ths, I'd like to also create 1/8t notes.

This is good instruction but when it gets to when you "draw" the pattern at the end, it just doesn't work, very confusing and I'm really considering not working with reaper because it's so confusing for a beginner.
Have followed instructions to a "T" but in the sequencer pane I have no notes on the left hand side and no piano like roll along the top where you have white, green and red etc. Could it be the version I am using or because it is a trial version

Hi Great video. Question: is there a way to use a midi pattern in a midi item to record or load a pattern into the sequencer. Here is why. I use trigger finger pro as a controller and sequencer. I have a terrible lag problem. to fix it I manually adjust and quantize. When I do this in mega baby it records totally different. I want to know if after I adjust it if I can import it into mega to do my song arrangement. Or if you have ideas for the lag problem a video on that would be great. Ty
Is there a way to then split this into separate tracks without a lot of copying / deleting? Just thinking about adding FX to, say, the drums and not have it effect everything else? Thanks!
Not certain, but it looks like drums on white keys and cymbals on black keys - sort of ... That and leave some space between assignments so you can add more "in between" later, if you want.
My pattern keeps playing after the lines I drew on the piano roll are over. Does anyone know how I can fix this? 16 notes from my piano roll are being linked to Megababy but don't seem to be controlling the sequencer.
SOLUTION: to stop the pattern from continuing to play, I had to make a blank pattern and put that on the camera roll. Simply ending the piano roll note will not stop the sequence.
I already did this tutorial, but I want to add one more track with different drums (different virtual instrument) on top. But if a select the same midi keys for the second track it gets in conflict with the first one.
