Just a note, in case someone else is struggling with midi note labelling AKA "why is megababy not playing my sample when I right click?". Megababy seems to have an octave offset which in my version (updated one at this date) is equal to -1. My sample was being triggered at C-1, but megababy was reading this as C-2. The octave offset can be edited in the JS code.
You can also draw an empty MIDI item and use the 'Apply track/take FX to items (MIDI output)' action to instantly print the pattern's MIDI data. It's faster than recording, especially if you have a shortcut assigned to it.
I have used FL Studios, Pro Tools, Cubase, and Cakewalk. Not that the previously mentioned are not good, but Reaper is in my opinion more capable and once played around with easier to use. Kenny and his tutorials is a vary generous added bonus. I can not thank him enough for helping me on the path to my dreams. As well as the team who created Reaper for making it so affordable.
dude! you are a big part of why I recently bought Reaper (coming from cubase pro 9.5) this is just awesome to see you go through almost anything we can think of and be able to master it quickly. thanks Kenny
You can downvote a video to tell the algorhitm you don't want to see videos like these. But a upvote or a downvote gives credit to the video either way. Massively downvoted videos are not shown less by the algorhitm.
I'm pretty new to recording and MIDI but I've just learned in 15 minutes what I could never have figured out myself! Awesome job from Mr Gioia once again.
Placing Megababy on Input FX Chain, to record it's MIDI: awesome trick, i never thought about that ! Great tut Kenny, thank you for the effort ! Warm Regards.
The method of recording in this video simply does not work well unless you enable "Preserve PDC delayed monitoring in recorded items" by right-clicking on the record arm button on the track and selecting that option. Otherwise the notes will all show up too early.
Thank you Kenny, I've been using reaper for some weeks now and you've helped me a LOT, reaper and ingenious people like you prove that you don't need to spend hundreds to create good music! Thanks a lot
Hi, Kenny. Thanks for another great video. I am now discovering the greatness of Mega Baby, a truly powerful and versatile sequencer. So glad you pointed me in M.B.´s direction in the first place. I am trying to put together a sequencer to my own specs and your videos are so helpful. I am using freeware VST´s and will eventually post them online. Cheers.
For the beginners out there an easy way to do something similar if you have a good drum vst is to set you input to midi, arm your track, record nothing, drag the recording to 4 bars, double click the empty audio file, and add your drums from the displayed piano roll.
This is great. I'm using reaper to trigger my Korg Volca Beats analogue drum machine via midi, and I wanted an intuitive sequencer like the one on the volca beats, here it is! The volca doesn't have midi output so you can have a great jam but not be able to record it. Maybe I need a tablet to control the mega baby sequencer for greater feel. Awesome stuff thanks!
That was exactly what i was looking for Kenny, thank you so much. I can't play or record drums tracks where i'm right now so i recorded the indivual pieces of the kit and i have been struggling to make them sound like a real performance. My main issue so far was the 'triples' with the hi-hats, so your explanation at 8:46 was exactly what i was looking for. Now all i got to do is to watch your video on how to send the individual drum pieces to individual tracks. Also I'd like to ask what is the importance of the 'velocity' bar you edited for the hi-hats ? And again thank you so much.
Super helpful tutorial! The only problem I have is that the drum sequence plays for the entire time, even in the absence of an item. It responds to the MIDI triggers when switching between patterns, but afterwards reverts right back to the default pattern. I really like this plugin, and any help would be appreciated!
Lydia Kyser Hi Lydia, I had the same problem because the sequencer wasn't dragging and saving as an FX Chain. If you save the sequencer as an FX chain manually right clicking on megababy and then clicking on FX chains. You can then load this as a virtual instrument. I hope I wasn't too late and could be of some help!
Hey Kenny. Thanks for this excellent tutorial! Is there anyway I can get my hands on these samples, maybe a stash link? Also, what is the note range you're using here? I really like working along with your videos and physically following all the steps... Thanks again!
Amazing! But can I work with midi patterns in reaper in a similar way to FL Studio? It is soooo easy to work with midi in FL Studio, but I love Reaper for mixing. It would be so awesome to have some way to mix those loves
Great vid Kenny as usual! I have a quick question. What is the preferred way to make a drum rack with notes routing to specific tracks with different mono timbral VSTs in each of those target tracks. I want to design my drum kit on a set of VST synths.
There's a project template called ReaDrums Mixer Mode that seems to do what you're talking about. I use it on lots of tracks and it saves time routing each track individually! Just replace the Reasamplomatic 5000's w the VST of your choice, then save it as another template. More info here: th-cam.com/video/KNkAly_RXdE/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps! :)
When I use mega baby it seems like the midi notes have a way better swing. And if you try to edit the notes in the piano roll after your record them they don’t line up to the grid for some reason. Even at 0 swing mega baby still has swing.
Thanks man, great tutorial, direct to the point and concise. Now i just have to ask, where did you get your samples...? Im having a hard time getting good samples for Lo-fi beats...
Okay... I know im late and maybe nobody is going to see that... but i have a problem... Until 2:40 everything works but my sounds (dont use the once he uses but similar once) dont play... its just not making any sounds... Has somebody a solution?
For some reason when I do this all the notes that I've set in the sequenced files need to be played one octave higher on the megababy (i.e I set a sound to d3 but I need to activate d4 for it to play) any ideas why?
I made my sequence, but once I put it on the FX input and hit record, it records the sequence I made, but it prints it out of time from the grid; not lined up at all, so it's playing out of sync from the metronome. It also seems to start the sequence in the middle of the sequence's bar. Anybody have any thoughts on why? Could it be a latency issue due to it going through the FX Input? I'm doing this on a slow-ish laptop.
This frustrated me as well. The method of recording in this video simply does not work well unless you enable "Preserve PDC delayed monitoring in recorded items" by right-clicking on the record arm button on the track.
Awesome tutorial and plugin! thanks Kenny. But it seems like there's a major feature missing in the plugin. The notes cannot be locked to the note they originate on. So if I want to slide the green range of the keyboard to a different range, the notes I already placed are now on a different note and play a different drum sound. Are there updates to this plugin or a workaround?
is there a way to download all of those specific drum samples? i only have a few from one other lesson so i was wondering if they were all available or not! thanks so much
Hi, great video. I am having a problem that when I record keyboards on any other track trough midi, it is changing my drum patterns in Megga. I have midi triger set on pat change re-sync, I have record off on the track no midi, and it still does it when I am recording to a synth on another track. help please. ty
Great Tutorial. How can you specify what measure you want this to start out at? For example, once this is setup it runs as soon as the run button is pressed. How do you make this not run until say measure 4?
Im thinking you can edit the midi items in Reaper's tracking window just like you can an audio waveform. Split at the end of the section (if needed) and drag it back to measure number 4 on your timeline. Simple as that.
Is there a way from here to place your pattern change commands on the playlist so that I can sequence the pattern changes on specific bars instead of "playing" the pattern changes live?
Hi Kenny and thanks for your videos! I cannot get the reaper virtual keyboard to work with the MTPomerDrumKit plugin. I don't have to do the right thing. Can you help me if it's possible? Thank you so much.
first you need to right click an empty area below the virtual midi keyboard, then choose 'send all input to virtual keyboard'. all buttons you press in your computer keyboard will now go to the virtual keyboard as long as it is visible in your screen.
Hi! Somebody knows how i can add some FX using the Megababy like for exemple a reverb just on my Clap and not on the rest of the pattern? Thanks a lot !
Deserves all the upvotes. Is there a reasonable idea behind -1 being the default? I can't image one.
You can also draw an empty MIDI item and use the 'Apply track/take FX to items (MIDI output)' action to instantly print the pattern's MIDI data. It's faster than recording, especially if you have a shortcut assigned to it.
This is a God send! Thanks
only it prints in a straight sequence, whereas with live control from the keyboard it's possible to record a hybrid sequence
Why Reaper ? Because Kenny's tutorials are so good .....that's WHY !!!!
Yezz mah brudda
well, that and the app is like the Linux/Unix of DAWs you can do anything you want in that biatch...
Yeah that does actually make a massive difference. Just straight forward tutorials for literally everything
If I only remember 1% of what you teach in these videos, I'll be happy.
God bless you. I've been trying to figure out how to find a sequencer for too long, and there it was! Right in Reaper. You are a Godsend.
I have used FL Studios, Pro Tools, Cubase, and Cakewalk. Not that the previously mentioned are not good, but Reaper is in my opinion more capable and once played around with easier to use. Why the heck would someone put a thumb down on this video? That person has to be angry at life? These videos are fantastic.
Because they sell a DAW and see how great the tutorials are for this one.
You can downvote a video to tell the algorhitm you don't want to see videos like these. But a upvote or a downvote gives credit to the video either way. Massively downvoted videos are not shown less by the algorhitm.
This guy makes the best Reaper tutorials, I honestly wanted so bad to learn to create music and he makes it fun and look so easy!

Great tutorial that convinced me to try Mega Baby on my next project.
I'm pretty new to recording and MIDI but I've just learned in 15 minutes what I could never have figured out myself! Awesome job from Mr Gioia once again.
Long time Reaper user, each time I'm surprised to discover how many new things I learn in each of your videos. Thank you !
Your tutorials are excellent man - every time I watch one I get new ideas for how to build tracks. Thanks for everything you do!
I can't see why this is better than midi editor in a loop.
Wow, dude, I was looking at a lot of plugins that could do something like this and didn't know I already had it for free on Reaper. Thanks!
Placing Megababy on Input FX Chain, to record it's MIDI: awesome trick, i never thought about that !
Great tut Kenny, thank you for the effort !
Warm Regards.
Thank you for all of your inspiration Rob
And thanks to both of you for all your videos and ideas :)
This is great! I didn't know it was in here. Can you constrain notes by key signature?
these videos are a fucking godsend. I can't tell you how much headache your content is going to save me moving forward
The method of recording in this video simply does not work well unless you enable "Preserve PDC delayed monitoring in recorded items" by right-clicking on the record arm button on the track and selecting that option. Otherwise the notes will all show up too early.
if you go into "Preferences" and then "Recording", you can uncheck "Use audio driver reported latency" and it will record the midi inputs on time.
8:39 Shift and Right Click, Ctrl and left or right click to change grid
This video is a Godsend. Now that I've tried this, I can't imagine making drum patterns any other way!
Thank you Kenny, I've been using reaper for some weeks now and you've helped me a LOT, reaper and ingenious people like you prove that you don't need to spend hundreds to create good music! Thanks a lot
This tutorial gives me so much of what I was looking for! More features that make me thrilled I switched from Garageband to Reaper! Thxs Kenny.

this is LITERALLY what I've been looking for. thank you so much Kenny! Reaper is the 🐐
YES! Finally I found what I needed. REAPER for life. This is the best DAW ever! It makes you more musical and efficient. Thanks dude.
Man, that's a MAJOR tutorial!! Helped me a lot, thank you.
Is this guy, like part of the programming team or something for Reaper? This dude knows like--everything about this program.
It has a nice swing function as well.
YES!!!
Great 👍. Q.. After passing the sequencer pattern to input effect, I start recording , but generating the pattern which out of rhythm
the video that has helped me so far at making beats in reaper, THANKS!
For the beginners out there an easy way to do something similar if you have a good drum vst is to set you input to midi, arm your track, record nothing, drag the recording to 4 bars, double click the empty audio file, and add your drums from the displayed piano roll.
Yet again, a great tutorial - THANK YOU!!
It's bad. I just can't export my drum pattern as a new midi item with dragging or simple button...Why I should "record" it?
Kenny is the man! Another helpful tutorial for this struggling novice.
Thank you for an informative tutorial.
Yes, I did learn something and yes, It surely will be useful.
Will be looking forward to more from Mr. Gioia.
I love this! I'm definitely going to try it out.

It's not as obvious but I was trying to make an accented feel as if the drummer played the hi hat harder on the downbeats. Thanks
The midi assignment is shifted by 1 octave
You have to edit the mega baby script and set
octave_offset=0;
to fix that
You're the man Kenny!
I'm late to the party, but thank you! I had no idea reaper had a stock step sequencer!
Super helpful tutorial! The only problem I have is that the drum sequence plays for the entire time, even in the absence of an item. It responds to the MIDI triggers when switching between patterns, but afterwards reverts right back to the default pattern. I really like this plugin, and any help would be appreciated!

How do you set up each sound to a different key?
Each sound is assigned to a key in the sampler.

I have the same problem but have to play the notes an octave lower. Any help would be appreciated!
I noticed the same thing when I was trying to find my assigned note in the sequencer. Looks like the same thing happened in this video.
@Margot Uriarte When i moved the red bar at the top to before the green bar it sorted that out, not sure if rrect but worked for me
Thank you so much this is gold!
Super video,thanks a million

how do you play what you put in the sequencer? when i press space it only plays the first note.

is there a way to download all of those specific drum samples? i only have a few from one other lesson so i was wondering if they were all available or not! thanks so much
Amazing tutorial!
Thanks
Can you apply different effects to each drum part?
The way I do that is by using a sampler like Kontakt, where you send each drum part to a separate output.
Hi, great video. I am having a problem that when I record keyboards on any other track trough midi, it is changing my drum patterns in Megga. Love the drum sounds. What are these kind of sounds called?
great tutorial
how does he have different drum sounds set to different keys on his virtual midi board?
This is a huge help, thanks!
If only Reaper made their UI nicer and updated the look of these ancient looking plugins... man I can only dream.

Yes. If you do it the way I did in this video, you can just record the changes on that track. They will playback and trigger the plugin.
you can just draw midi notes in the MIDI item placed on the step sequencer track to trigger specific pattern
Thanks Kenny! Your vids are helping me make stuff!
how do you set different samples to a specific key?
Hi Kenny and thanks for your videos! I cannot get the reaper virtual keyboard to work with the MTPomerDrumKit plugin. I don't have to do the right thing. Can you help me if it's possible? Thank you so much.
