Mixing Drums - "Vintage" Organic Style Using Plugins

  • Today I open a un-touched drum tracking session and start my mix process. After this I will most likely run the sounds thru some analog processing and into ¼ tape before officially chopping and packaging the new Sample Pack.
    Shout out @digitalnic0 for letting me come over and record!

    The "weird mids" were due to phase cancellation. Notice how the bass started going away when you brought up the weird overhead.

    • @vvundertone
      @vvundertone  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You are right. While I tried my best to keep phase correct (visually) when tracking perhaps the mics being too close caused the issue. I will correct it before printing to tape for sure! Thank you

    Great video! Very solid mixing fundamentals. Since you mentioned you were looking for a compressor, my go-to for drums is the Kramer PIE Compressor from Waves, which is a model of the PYE compressors they had at Olympic Studios, and even using it very subtly, it really brings the drums forward in the mix. I also second the person who mentioned Kolin by Analog Obsession, a model of a Collins 26U-1 vari-mu, and which is great in parallel. Aside from that, Arturia makes really good compressors (their 1176 is fantastic, as is the 33609, and their dbx emulation is so smooth-I love it on overheads). The Softube Tube-Tech compressor is great. The bx_townhouse is good SSL bus compressor. The Lindell SBC is a very solid API compressor. The DPR-402 (also by Waves) is good for when you wanna mess things up.

    yoo thanks for the vid :) as for compressors plugins on drums: i love the "kolin" compressor by analog obsession on 50% wet parallel, i think it sounds really sweet (and its free)- the vulf compressor has much more "sound", pretty intense and aggressive but i love it- very unique.

I took my mattress and leaned it against the window and piled several drapes in front. I stapled pillows along every corner of each wall. Put down several carpets, and a c-stand hung with piles of blankets over it. Basically anything I could possibly find near me that was soft. But then stacking the soft items so they became thick as possible. Then I used Soyuz 013 microphones with hypercardioid microphone capsules attached to greatly reduce any extra room tone and solely focus on what I pointed them at.

      I just think in the digital world some things don't quite stack up what they are modeled after. When I use plugin compression, something feels cartoonish and plastic about them. I feel like I can't push them too much because they start to sonically crumble. Hard to articulate, and could be because I record a lot with microphones rather than software instruments.

    What about phase? I usually start by dragging my recorded transients to the exact same spot. Do you also do that?
    Awesome sounding drums! made me forget about my ex for a while... 😃

    • @vvundertone
      @vvundertone  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always check phase when tracking first. As for dragging things around to get absolutely perfect alignment I don't do much. Especially if I am going for a older sound, since they didn't do that back then I choose not to do it now. BUT with that said if I am going for maximum snap, heavy processed, hyper realistic, borderline hurt your ears drums I will do that. I am glad you enjoyed them and found some temporary escapism my friend.

    kinda now sounds at least for me too much spacey/stereo to be hitting hard enough as drums. but still really interesting way to mix and give it some texture!

    • @vvundertone
      @vvundertone  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is just phase 1 of the process. Next I run it thru another set of analog processes and correct any lapse of judgments from first sound. Although here it is completely mono and without reverb so I am curious how you hear it spacey and stereo? Is it the ADT that does it? Because I ended of removing that before mastering to tape haha

    Killer stuff! Subscribed and followed on IG! What's your preferred mic for the kick drum?

    • @vvundertone
      @vvundertone  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Appreciate it! Its dangerous water but nothing sounds better than a ribbon on kick. Some are better at taking the high SPL's. There is also a specific way to mic it so the air doesn't hit the ribbon by tilting the microphone. After that I dig EV RE-20, and sometimes large diaphragm condensers.

    • @vvundertone
      @vvundertone  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The plugins yes, but the settings must change depending on the source material. I can do more videos based on a completed song mixing rather than a raw sample pack session. I got a few in mind that would do well.

    What do you use that for or is it just for decoration?
    Thanks in advance just been given one on loan…

    • @vvundertone
      @vvundertone  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing in my studio is for decoration. If it doesn't work I send it out. Tape is my favorite medium. This is actually the first time I posted a computer centric video. I have a collection of various tape machines and use them regularly. In fact this exact session was just printed to tape yesterday. Its my way of "mastering" no more changes, the packs complete and then I put the tape on the shelf where it will out live me and hopefully be re-discovered by another young tape enthusiast such as yourself. Try tape! Tape is Truth!
