  • The Irimi meditation practice is inspired by the Aikido (a traditional Japanese martial art) principle of moving into the realm of adversity instead of away from it when facing a challenging situation.
The IRIMI meditation includes four stages.
Stage 1 - BALANCE: Center yourself and cultivate a mental state of openness and non-judgment
Stage 2 - QUESTION: Ask yourself questions about the challenge to uncover potentially hidden beliefs and theories about the event’s causes
Stage 3 - COUNTERFACTUAL THINKING: Look for evidence of the opposite of our original beliefs and theories.
Stage 4 - NEW OPTIONS: With this more flexible and open-minded interpretation, consider testing these alternative interpretations through new action options as you move back into your life
This practice is part of the Mindfulness-Based Strategic Awareness Training (MBSAT) developed by Juan H. Young (2023).
