I used to work with, (30 yrs ago) a Yorkshire chef, 8 stone wet through, who lived in at the hotel we worked at. He was known to order 8 pints of beer, carry them up to his room and then stay up most of the night drinking them. This reminded me of that
One day he came up to me and asked if I wanted to go on a mission. When I asked him to explain what the mission was, he described breaking into the cellar and filling up ice cream tubs with beer straight from the keg. I declined

The first filtered lager was Spaten in 1878. Pilsner Urquell had introduced the industrial cooling system earlier, which made the modern bottom-fermentation possible. Seeing this success, Georg Sedlmayr persuaded Carl Linde to install it in his brewery in Munich as well. But he wasn't sure the conservative Bavarians, who were used to the dark beers would like the pale one, so he tested his brand new bottom-fermented, filtered pale lager in Hamburg. The seamen liked it, and the Munich Helles was born. The rest is history :)
It's hard to argue with Lidl's selection if, like me, your finances have taken a hit. I can't justify £4 a can at the minute. I can go in Lidl have a 660ml bottle of Victoria for £2.20. 500ml Budvar is £1.59. Great value really
Was pleasantly surprised when la chouffe suddenly started to turn up in sainsbury's and waitrose. Doesn't make up for all the UK stuff going down the shitter - but every cloud...
1) Franziskaner 2) Sierra Nevada 3) Rosa Blanca 4) Love and Hate 5) Hoegaarden 6) Leffe Brune 7) Ultra Phase by North 8) Kingslayer by Buxton 9) Estrella 10) Menabrea
Got the Pilsner Urquell, Krombacher, Warsteiner and solme Clarkson's Hawkstone lager all in the fridge nice znd ciold ready to open. Krombacher is my favourite.
Delirium Tremens is a rapid onset of confusion usually caused by withdrawal from alcohol. When it occurs, it is often three days into the withdrawal symptoms and lasts for two to three days. Physical effects may include shaking, shivering, irregular heart rate, and sweating. People may also hallucinate. It's also a great name for a beer...
Great selection, I think I'd agree with all of them, especially the Belgian ones. I think the "Best beer in the world" you were thinking of was "Westveleteran 12" which is a Monk brewed beer and has close ties to the St Bernardus brewery which is just down the road from the Westveleteran Abbey. Both are definitely worth a visit, especially St Bernardus which has a guest house and restaurant at the brewery which I went to this year and stayed at with a few mates. The brewery tour there is awesome.
Good video this one Simon, as you say, it's good to see a selection drinks that can be found across multiple supermarkets. I have no Tesco, sainsbury, Asda within 15/20 miles, so it's good to see a collection i can get in morrisons
Duval citra is one of my all time favs it is so drinkable and is wonderful on a sunny day with a each of lamb and Greek salad And it’s always as lively as that on the pour so you need to use correct glass ware and be gentle For the money there are few better beers in the supermarket However try and pick up some double barrelled now in Tesco and Waitrose they are the best at the minute Love watching you keep it up 👍
Went to Munich a few years ago and drunk helles for the 1st time, blew my mind , so smooth and drinkable, just like pilsner but without that bit of bitter at the end.
@@jamesmochan8576 - Spaten from Sainsbury’s and Paulaner from Tesco are both great Munich beers, and bring back some good memories of summer holiday in Bavaria.
top 10 supermarket beers: rochefort 8, rochefort 10, rochefort tripel, westmalle tripel, duvel tripel hop cashmere, st bernardus christmas ale, Omer, Vanderghinste roodbruin, Chimay blue and when I get lucky Orval
Great video, I’ve drunk most of them, the Belgium beers are amazing. Please can you make a similar video of the top 10 UK beers you can buy in supermarkets.
I didn't know Pilsner Urquell was the first filtered beer. I know it was the first Pilsner and took its name from Plzen where it is brewed. All other Pilsner style lagers are technically descendents of this beer and prior to it being introduced beers in Europe were Helles style lagers.
Here’s one for you Simon, it’s Christmas Day, about 90 mins before we sit down for our traditional Christmas dinner, one beer we should buy to get us in the mood and get our taste buds ready for the big event. Give us your top 3 to try.
When it comes to pilsner urquell I’m actually not that fond of it from a bottle but the cans are lovely, see if you can do a comparison between them Simon, cheers 🍻
Yes. Pilsner Urquell from the bottle is skunky, the cans are better, then the gap between can and on tap is maaasssive. It's like another beer. Best lager I've had, on tap Czech rep.
You got me onto the Czech and German lagers and Weissbeers and I ain’t looked back since, absolutely wonderful stuff every single one of them. Great vid Si 👍🍺
Franziskaner is in Tesco at 4 x 500ml for £7. I know Asda do it, but can't find it on their website. They do a 4 for 3, but I can't remember the bottle price. About the same I think. Anyway, I stocked up!
Franziskaner fore me is the number 1, tried weinstephanner & Paulaner weissbier & not in same league. The head stays & the creamy mouth feel is second to none, also when poured it yer got to hold on for the froth to come out of the top. The Monk on the front drinking out of a jug makes me think that back in day about 800 years ago they saw it as a food
Can’t think of an entire personal top 10 off the bat but Warstenier, Khombacher and Paulaner are regular purchases for me. Spaten too. Estrella Galacia and Estrella Damm are more than adequate when they’re on offer. Love Lane NEIPA is a superb craft beer given the measly price of £1.49! I buy Lost Lager when it’s on offer too, which is often. Again, for the price it’s decent.
While St Bernardus did make Westvleteren 12, and ABT 12 uses the same recipe, there are differences, most notably the yeast. It's reported that St Bernardus still uses the original Westvleteren yeast, while Westveltern uses Westmalle yeast (as do many Belgian Trappist beers). Equipment and fermentation/maturation times/conditions can also have an impact. Much of the fanfare around Westvleteren 12 was its scarcity and the stories of acquiring the beer. And the cost on the secondary market. In saying that, having tried both beers in comparative blind tastings in a range of ages, I've chosen Westvleteren 12 pretty much every time. Although ABT 12 Nitro at the brewery is incredible. Really, there is only one Quad, the La Trappe Quadrupel (10%), as it's the trademarked brand name. All beers within that style, including La Trappe Quad, would have been traditionally characterised/called 'Strong Belgian Dark.' (Yes, yes, I know it's from the Netherlands) We also have to remember that Belgium doesn't/didn't really think about beers within style guidelines, as we do now. That was pretty much as a result of Michael Jackson wanting to characterise/group beers through similarities.
Great video Man. Been following for years, and of course most of these beer are in my rotation. They are all special to me. Except Ive never been able to get Sputnik in Canada.
Those are all very good supermarket macro beers, though the type of beers on display are all over the place. I'd have went with a top 3 per category, so just 1 Weizen in the ranking isn't doing it for me. When it comes to Weizen, I like Ayinger Brauweiss the most, it's simply the best out of mulitiple face-offs that I did. Closely followed by Andechs and Jacob Weissbier. Of the macro brands Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier and Hacker Pschorr are the best. But few supermarkets sell those, let alone all year around. So, under the condition of "must be available in most supermarkets", here in NL, I'd go for the Grolsch Weizen as my favourit. Followed by Paulaner, Benedikter and Fransikaner. Those would be my top Weizen that you may find in most supermarkets. Ranking around 8,5-9 out of 10. For 9,5-10 out of 10, the smaller breweries take the crown though. PS: Simon, you're stil butchering "(Deutsche) Reinheitsgebot", or a bit hammered already? Lol. --> Ry-n + hi +ts + ge/ke-bot
Fantastic video as always Simon. Just a thought - why not do some videos where you follow up and answer questions from he comments? Could be a good way to produce a different type of content whilst also engaging with your viewerbase? I think it would be interesting.
Don't think we couldn't see you avoiding that Duval Simon! 😂 love your reviews, I watch most of them, but my favourite bit is still when one of your cats wrecked the joint mid-review...still tickles me that bit 😂😂
Of the German supermarket lagers it's Paulaner for me. I sometimes buy Krombacher if theres a deal on. I'm not really fond of Warsteiner due it's flavour, although I still occasionally buy when I forget what it's like. BTW it's pronounced Varshteiner.
I've not tried everything in your selection but Franziskaner Weissbier is one of my favourites too - I brought a case back from Germany before. Cheers! 🍻
Diacetyl in Urquell is a feature of the beer, when it's kept in very small amounts. There's a very fine line from where it's acceptable to where it ruins the beer, and some batches they've let it go a bit too far.
For some reason, I’m not keen on wheat based beers. Weissbier stink to me, like a wet cloth staying in the sink for days. Don’t know why. Always like lagers as a proper European and lately I found taste for some IPAs. Cheers Simon
Here in Finland we have pretty wide beer selections in the bigger stores, but I'd have to personally go with either Paulaner's helles or weissbier. You can get these pretty much anywhere, even the smaller corner stores, and as opposed to some of the competition, they're often sold in cans and on discount, so you get really good quality for a low-ish price. Out of those beers you've got there on the table, I'd go with the Franziskaner. It just ever so slightly has the edge over Paulaner's helles.
Here is my TOP: wheat Weihensteph hefe Weihensteph Vitus Franziskaner helles Bayerish Hell - very tasty, but can not drink many. Strange :D Kombacher Hell - easy, but tasty Welternburg Kloster - very good HackerPschorr Kellerbier Would love to try: St. Berndardus 12 Duvel Citra
My local has both Delirium (rouge & tremens) and La Chouffe on tap, along with a massive load of others. I must give them a go, but there is often too much choice.
@ I’ve never bought it in a supermarket, but I think Tesco does the blue label one (tremens?). Waitrose might do it as well. It’s my local pub that has them on draught (keg) .
Of the ones you have there, the Belgians are all outstanding beers but not ones I would drink regularly. For day-to-day drinking, Krombacher is a very solid shout as it reminds me a bit of Spaten Munich Lager. You don't have Veltins there but that's another solid candidate. One of the best German lagers that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Just got back from Bratislava and had Urquell from the tank in a great bar and it was amazing, before i thought it was nice but not outstanding, superb beer.
Really surprised weinstephaner wasn't in there. In sainos every week. Better than franzkaner. Also, the best lager is spaten imo. In sainos every week. Will try duvel citra. Been eyeing that up but never ulled the trigger. Thanks for all your recommendations over the years. Great channel
Love your reviews , you've really opened my mind to beer and German beer in particular, however I feel stella un-chillfiltered deserves a mention , fantastic example of what a company can do for the consumer
Totally agree. Pilsner Urquell in a bottle is skunky and harsh. Can is better, however PU on tap is incredible, it's like another beer. Exceptional lager on tap in the Czech Rep.
@Heaven-dy9lj I would love to try that! It was actually on draught near to me, but nobody drank it, then it just went out of date. By the time I realised the pub had it, it was too late! What's it like on Pd?
Mr ReAleCraber not sure swirling the dregs out of the bottles that look like decanting beers will help your age onset wheat / yeast intolerance... Just an observation, big fan 🧐
the list changes but I do always like an erdinger dunkel, paulander hells, Spatencor Franziskaner Hefe Weissbier. I prefer zywiec to krombacher. The bitterness with krombacher is nice and strong but seems very one dimensional. zywiec bitterness isn't as pronounced but I get more interest from it
Czech Pilsner lager in a bottle and on tap are TWO totally different beers. In a bottle it smells skunky, or something. On tap it's smooth, creamy, lovely taste -not harsh skunky.
Just clicked so not watched yet. The only beer in the thumbnail that I haven't tried is that red can which I think is probably some sort of British brewed trumped up IPA. Of the others, I've drunk them all regularly except Delirium which I think I've only had 2 or 3 times. This is a solid selection!
A difficult process to choose these beers, is that because you end up flat on your back at the end of the choosing process? I find Krombacher a tad sweet.
Hi Simon, maybe a review idea that I think could be useful. Thinking with Christmas coming up I and I’m sure many people will be drinking all day starting early afternoon, so I’ll be getting a few low ABV ales and I’m thinking maybe to do a supermarket sessionable ale battle being staring for example the new Fullers Gold which is 3.4% the old session hen (which I know you rated) 3.4% and black sheep blonde 3.7% could be worth a review. Cheers keep up the content 👍🏼🍺
@ definitely I tried the black sheep blonde for first time tonight, really enjoyed it zesty & refreshing with a nice mouthfeel considering the abv will be buying again
Duvel Triple Hop Citra is fantastic. You poured it incorrectly though. It's not meant to be cloudy. Ensure the bottle has been upright and not shaken for past 24 hours, to let the sediment settle. Then slowly pour (no glugs) into the glass, ensuring to leave about 1.5cm in the bottle. It will nearly be clear, taste less bitter, completely different and clean! Try it and if you do it right, you'll be blown away!
Duvel Tripel Hop Citra is actually 9.5 percent abv. It's probably my favourite beer ever. Along with Tripel Karmeliet, Westmalle Tripel and Delirium Tremens. I like them blondes :p And that best beer in the world, maybe Westvleteren?
Where can you get the Sam Smith's lager though, the whole point is the beers must be accessible to everyone. I have never seen it in any major supermarket near me 🤷♂️
That's a great selection you've got there. My go to IPA would be Sierra Nevada which I'm surprised is readily available. It used to be Lagunitas IPA in a bottle but it's been unavailable since Covid I believe 😟
warsteiner 8/10 in my book , ive got me a big bottle of le chouffe for friday , i can really recomend Alfa edelpils wich is a great german style pilsener brewed in Schinnen The Netherlands they pride themselves as a clean brewer so im kinda curious how you would score Alfa edel pils
Westvleteren is the very good Belgian beer with all the details on the cap - although I think now they have to have a label as well because there's not enough space on the cap for everything that needs to be said
I agree, personally I was disappointed with Krombacher, though it’s a bit better than Bitburger. Paulaner is great and Warsteiner is not far behind. Pilsner Urquell is better in the cans I think compared to the bottles.
What happens to all the beers on these big reviews? Do you drink all of them after if you like them all? Do you share them or try and keep opened bottles? Always wanted to know...
Duvel is a great beer but Straffe Hendrik Tripel and St Bernardus Tripel are for me superior.Rodenbach Grand Cru and the magnificent Orval are two other beers available in the UK but not as far as I know in any supermarkets. German wheat beers are for me a summer beer and most of them are very similar in taste, Schneider Weisse being the pick of a big bunch A conservative choice I would say but each to their own.
I used to work with, (30 yrs ago) a Yorkshire chef, 8 stone wet through, who lived in at the hotel we worked at. He was known to order 8 pints of beer, carry them up to his room and then stay up most of the night drinking them. This reminded me of that

I saw that a Lappish beer (not Lapin Kulta! 😉) won international lager of the year. The brand which has the tower/castle gates. Worth seeking out
Here is my TOP:
wheat
Weihensteph hefe
Weihensteph Vitus
Franziskaner
helles
Bayerish Hell - very tasty, but can not drink many. Strange :D
Kombacher Hell - easy, but tasty
Welternburg Kloster - very good
HackerPschorr Kellerbier
Would love to try:
St. Berndardus 12
Duvel Citra
My local has both Delirium (rouge & tremens) and La Chouffe on tap, along with a massive load of others. I must give them a go, but there is often too much choice.
Which supermarket do you get Delerium in
@ I’ve never bought it in a supermarket, but I think Tesco does the blue label one (tremens?). Waitrose might do it as well. It’s my local pub that has them on draught (keg) .
@@mrkitewine7700 I'll give tesco's and waitrose a go, cheers
Have you tried HEFF wheat beer from Thornbridge? I had one yesterday and was very surprised how good it was.
Warsteiner or wobbly as we called it in BFG during the 1980's and 90's.....awesome!
I think you are bang on with your choices there Simon. Top beers and all widely available, which is the idea.
My current favourites are rheinbacher Weiss beer, the Málaga Spanish lager from Lidl and San Marcos from Aldi.
Netto supermarket in Germany are selling 20x 500ml bottles of Krombacher Pils for 10.99 Euros. Thats 46p per bottle. Talk about us getting ripped off.
British tax on beer is fourteen times what it is in Germany by all accounts. The term`stifling growth` would be the understatement of the year!
55p per bottle
@@BadHorsie1 Nope. 55 euro cents per bottle
Just watched the infamous duvel livestream. Amazing. Like a lost episode of inside no 9
The word you’re looking for is practical. 😂 had me in stitches that
What temperature are these beers at? Went to a bar in St Ives recently, they had Kriek on tap, it was glorious but £9 a pint!
He left it out because Franzenskaner is more readily available, Weinstephaner maybe Sainsbury's only?
@@Belfast-Biccy ah, that makes sense
I still prefer Franzi over the Weinstephaner myself.
Fantastic video cheers Simon
We just got some Warsteiner in the liquor store I manage recently. It came from the distributor already outdated. We were not happy.
Love your reviews , you've really opened my mind to beer and German beer in particular, however I feel stella un-chillfiltered deserves a mention , fantastic example of what a company can do for the consumer
Duval triple from lidl is a great buy. Probably a great Christmas beer at 9% abv.
Beautiful selection! Pretty much my favourites too, except I'd have maybe thrown in another weissbier. Argh, gagging for a pint now 😂🍻
Straight away I can say that Simon is in my top 10.
We all have different opinions, but urquel is another level. Maybe try the cans and compare as i found thenbottles not to be quite as good.
@@robrn1975 I don't know, I always drink it from the pub : ) Beer costs are quite cheap here. About 1 pound 30 for a PU draught. Tho it does vary.
@@Heaven-dy9lj what? Where do you live?
@@robrn1975 From the land where this beer originates. : )
Mr ReAleCraber not sure swirling the dregs out of the bottles that look like decanting beers will help your age onset wheat / yeast intolerance...
Just an observation, big fan 🧐
Duvel Triple Hop Citra is the bomb ❤️
the list changes but I do always like an erdinger dunkel, paulander hells, Spatencor Franziskaner Hefe Weissbier. I prefer zywiec to krombacher. The bitterness with krombacher is nice and strong but seems very one dimensional. zywiec bitterness isn't as pronounced but I get more interest from it
Great vid, enjoyed that
Czech Pilsner lager in a bottle and on tap are TWO totally different beers.
Hi mate have you tried Stewart IPA brewed up in Edinburgh. Fet it in Aldi. Really good
A difficult process to choose these beers, is that because you end up flat on your back at the end of the choosing process? I find Krombacher a tad sweet.
Hi Simon, maybe a review idea that I think could be useful. Thinking with Christmas coming up I and I’m sure many people will be drinking all day starting early afternoon, so I’ll be getting a few low ABV ales and I’m thinking maybe to do a supermarket sessionable ale battle being staring for example the new Fullers Gold which is 3.4% the old session hen (which I know you rated) 3.4% and black sheep blonde 3.7% could be worth a review. Cheers keep up the content 👍🏼🍺
I've also moved to the lower ABV beers, unless a special occasion. Some good options out there, I think. You've noted a few!
Just flicked through the duvel challenge, can’t believe bier hooligan drank 10 duvels plus 2 more beers and he looked sober afterwards 😂
He was sniffing packet on the side to straighten himself out
Franziskaner 4 for £7 in my local tesco paulaner 3 for £6 club card needed
Paulaner glides down!
Duvel Tripel Hop Citra is actually 9.5 percent abv. It's probably my favourite beer ever. Along with Tripel Karmeliet, Westmalle Tripel and Delirium Tremens. I like them blondes :p
And that best beer in the world, maybe Westvleteren?
i bet you feel very merry after all them mate..look good them
Fair choice there, Simon. Personally I would have Old Peculiar and Sam Smith Pure Brewed lager.
Sierra Nevada is best in the bottle. The cans are mid. Lagunitas went badly downhill after they sold out to a major group. Heineken if I recall.
@DidYaServe definitely best out of a bottle yes. Heineken are bastards aren't they 😕
Franziskaner is sensational! Simple as that
Testing an unpractable 10 beers in a sesh so we don’t have to… a scholar and a gentleman. 😂 Keep up the sterling work fella
Class video! I didn’t realise delirium was available in the supermarkets
Tesco
They have removed its full name though as not to offend.
and about st bernardus... they used to make westvleteren. nothing to do with rochefort ;-)
The big question is were they all finished? Great video very similar to my regular choices per style 🍻
warsteiner 8/10 in my book , ive got me a big bottle of le chouffe for friday , i can really recomend Alfa edelpils wich is a great german style pilsener brewed in Schinnen The Netherlands they pride themselves as a clean brewer so im kinda curious how you would score Alfa edel pils
Veltins also a good option, nice on draught too!
for a while Tesco Ni had veltins, fecking loved it mate.
10 beers in with ABV’s over 8 I’d be struggling with words too Simon 😂
Its really hard to find a lager over 5 per cent ABV in most off licenses in the UK nowadays 😢
Westvleteren is the very good Belgian beer with all the details on the cap - although I think now they have to have a label as well because there's not enough space on the cap for everything that needs to be said
No its more legal requirement.
Krombacher is not bad at all...but no way i'd rate it so high, great overall selection though!...man knows his beer
Pilsner urquell from the tank...is 'chefs kiss'
I agree, personally I was disappointed with Krombacher, though it’s a bit better than Bitburger.
Paulaner is great and Warsteiner is not far behind.
Pilsner Urquell is better in the cans I think compared to the bottles.
What happens to all the beers on these big reviews? Do you drink all of them after if you like them all? Do you share them or try and keep opened bottles? Always wanted to know...
Think sink.
he drinks the ones he likes i would imagine
Duvel is a great beer but Straffe Hendrik Tripel and St Bernardus Tripel are for me superior.Rodenbach Grand Cru and the magnificent Orval are two other beers available in the UK but not as far as I know in any supermarkets.
German wheat beers are for me a summer beer and most of them are very similar in taste, Schneider Weisse being the pick of a big bunch
A conservative choice I would say but each to their own.
