Maybe worth knowing, Tsingtao, was originally brewed in China by Germans when it was part of the Imperial German Empire and the brewery was owned by the Anglo-German Brewery Co, pre WW1.
Krombacher is the beer of choice where we live in Germany. You can get a crate of 24x .33l bottles (we buy by the crate of course) on a special offer in the local supermarket for €11. Lovely.
Before I started watching I had my own top three worked out: 1: Krombacher, 2: Budweiser Budvar, 3: Staropramen. Good to see that we agree about the nr 1. I don't like my beers brewed with glucose or fructose syrup like Singha and I prefer the Czech aroma hops to the ones used in Tsingtao.
You've pointed out exactly what's wrong with this tasting, you knew before he tried which would win. So did I. So what was the point? His Saturday night go to beer was always going to win.
I don't agree with you. This is a fun video, and there are 10 beers, so there are 9 places before 1 place! And anyways, he gives 10 out of 10 for several of the beers. I think you should make your own video before complaining about this one. 😊👍
It's beer o'clock in Russia: thanks Simon for brilliant performance and entertainment! You're simply the best of all those beer channels. STONE THE CROWS. Paul / St. Petersburg
I had some great beer in St Petersburg in Tinkoff and Metropole. That was a while ago, don't know if they're still going but great places for a beer when I was there.
ONLY because of you doing this; I went to Tesco today and I bought a Tsingtao Lager together with a Singha and I also bought a Tyskie to find out why so many Polish anglers leave their bottles at our fisheries. (BAH!) So tonight I opened the Tsingtao and . . . it certainly is a beautiful lager. Love it! And that despite I don't like buying stuff from China, but I promise, this is an exceptional lager. Well worth the money and I got the 3 bottles for £5.50. I will drink the Singha and Tyskie on other nights (because I'm diabetic and have to limit my intake), but I do love this Tsingtao. SURPRISED! 😲
Singha is not the beer that it was when originally imported from Thailand and it's also down in strength from the original 6%ABV. The Shephed Neame version isn't bad, but it's not a patch on the original. Tsingtao is still the great beer it always was. I originally came across Tsingtao in Hong Kong in 1993 and couldn't understand why all the expats never drank it, but preferred Carlsberg and Heineken, which to me were awful. When I discovered that the port of Tsingtao (Qingdao) was built up by the Germans back in colonial days and that after building their trading facilities, the first thing they did was build a brewery, it became obvious why the beer was so good. It's brewed under the same beer purity standards that the Germans brought with them. It's great that it's easily available in the UK and every time I drink it, I pray that they don't ever allow it to be brewed under licence in the UK. It's only £5.50p for three large bottles in Tesco and although I'm a draught beer drinker in the pub, I always have some Tsingtao in the fridge..
I first went out to Hong Kong in 1980 and drank Tsingtao at seafood restaurants in Lamma and Po Toi (my Dad, an expat, was preparing me for a long life of beer drinking). I worked in Hong Kong from 1994 to 2014 and at some point Tsingtao became an inferior drink as they added rice to the mix whereas previously they had followed strict German purity laws. I had many trips to Thailand and Singha went down hill in 2005 when they reduced the alcohol content from 6% down to 5%. Most expats preferred to drink Philippines-brewed San Miguel rather than the Hong Kong-brewed San Miguel, imported Carlsberg and Heineken.
If you have ever watched Serpentza channel and his travels around China, you will seen him buy the draught version, in a plastic bag, from the brewery. And yes it was his beer of choice in China.
I like how slowly more and more inebriated you got throughout this video. Amazing. Think the Tsingtao only got so far because it was in your Welsh dragon glass!
If you're interested in getting 4 or 5 of the same type of glass (since you always bring it up with these beer tests), you could head up to Wilko's. They sell pilsner and ale pint glasses forunder £2 a piece. I like to have the same type of glassware so it all looks consistent and I don't personally like logos on my glasses. You've got some great glassware though, I don't think having different glasses influences perception of the beer *that* much...
The moment these foreign lagers switch production to the UK (inevitably to be watered down & pumped full of wretched glucose syrup) is the moment I stop drinking them 🤦🏾♀️ Shouldn't be allowed under the trade descriptions act if you ask me -it's a bloody swiz!
I'm surprised that TsingTao made it this so far. I was thinking at the beginning "oh I personally like that beer very much, but he might put it off the shelf soon"... Guess not 😄 A local chinese restaurant with a very good reputation and high quality standards "De Nieuwe Chinese Muur" near my place at the Bergse Dorpsstraat sells the TsingTao (bottled). I was a bit sceptical the last time I was there ordering it and saw the "green" bottle and thought "it might get skunked" but It didn't and after that I ordered 4 more and none of 'm skunked. I knew from my father that the restaurant owner (James Wang) always wanted high quality standards for their fresh food, food for delivery and also these green bottled beers I guess.
Good choice - Krombacher takes some beating. Probably my favourite - full of flavour but not too malty and not over strong. Lowenbrau is lovely but at 5.2% is bit too strong for any sort of session. Different type - but Whistable Bay pale ale is a current favourite and well with checking out.
Great vid, I found the Rheinbacher a few years ago by accident and keep going back to it, a very good drink. Plus the bonus of an inflation beating price in Aldi 😎👍
I remember when I first drank Krombacher, which was in a German themed bar, poured from draught and straight away I thought, WOW, that is one amazing pilsner. I still haven't found a regularly available pils that beats it.

Honestly benn waiting for you to review this. Tsingtao is my go to if I'm treating myself, crisp, clean beautiful lager. Would of been happy if it made the top 5😂
Funny enough I was at a house party over the weekend where they had Krombacher in the fridge - which was awesome. When it ran out - I had to resort to a Stella, which was undrinkable in comparison - had to pour it down the sink!

Great video Simon, surprised Paulaner was ousted so early, but yeah Krombacher is always very reliable. Think I may need to revisit Tsingtao though, had a few dodgy ones in the past and never tried it again. Cheers 🍻
Tsingtao is a great beer, I drink it regularly. German quality combined with Asian ingredients - excellent. There's also something about the weight of a Tsingtao bottle in your hand, nothing to do with the beer itself.
You took one for the team there, Simon. Bloody great video! I’ve become a bit of a snob when it comes to larger and pretty much only drink German; totally agree that UK brewed is generally an embarrassment. As a result, the big surprise for me is the Chinese beer, so I’ll be checking that out. Keep on keeping on fella!👍
Agree with you on both the 600ml "Tsingtao $4.20NZ" and "Krombacher $4.90NZ". Quality import beers & great value which are routinely $2NZ cheeper than my local Kiwi/Aus 660mls beers.
Love my Warsteiner. used to get a great deal from asda but currently out of stock .Tsingtao is great too. Had that all the time when I worked in China.
Stella Unfiltered is brewed at the ABInbev brewery in Samlesbury near Preston and has been since it’s release. It has never been brewed by Camden Town Brewery.
Excited to watch this Simon. Great idea for a video, I write before I’ve actually viewed, as it’s peaked my curiosity. Interested to see your conclusion. Love the channel, great work 👍.
This is a pretty good selection of lager!! These are still pretty good, the ones brewed by these companies seem to still taste good for the UK market (at the moment!) I see you've left out the ones that have been messed up eg Beck's!! The lagers must go all warm when opened at the same time Stella unfiltered is much closer to Belgian brewed Stella, I quite like it
Excellent video. There are three beers I really, really wish we could get in this country: 1. Brewed in USA Budweiser 2. Brewed in Belgium Stella Artois 3. Brewed in France Kronenburg 1664 I've searched high and low, even in French and American shops, and I just cannot find them. Feels like a conspiracy...
Shoot out at the bottled Supermarket lager Corral..! An agonizing decision based on some choice bottled lagers! Wavering and uncertainty to the very end - a close call. I'd have to drink all 10 bottles (for fairness of comparison sake- lol), then call the competition quits based on invalid inebriation. That's why I judge your informed knowledge Simon for insight. @@nathanrodriguez780 haha literally, at least he got the ‘ching’ right 😂😂. I simply had to post this when I heard him pronounce it. I ordered it in Wetherspoons once and I remember the bartender just looked at me and said “oh, you mean ‘Ting-taow’” 💀.
That was a great video well done, some of my absolute favourites in there and my 2 favourite beers came 1st and 3rd. The only one I haven't tried is Menabrea but I have a bottle in my fridge so can't wait to try it.
I think the Budvar is the most widely available out of these (I've not really seen much or tried a few of these tested beers). Bought the Budvar in Home Bargains on holidays last time £1.50. My go to beer. Never disappoints. Krombacher Pils £3.50 for 4 cans in Aldi (correction - it's Rheinbacher).
@@Coxy-b34 correct. I've now realised Rheinbacher is a knock off Krombacher tbh. They look different these days, but the bottles used to look similar imo, so I would confuse the two. I've never had Krombacher. I used to buy Rheinbacher when it was 5% ABV as it was a cracking pilsner for the money, but it no longer is.
Just found this channel and ugh, this video is absolute fucking gold. Just a sound guy chatting about beer getting nicely sloshed. Great content and really made me smile haha, thanks man!
I appreciate how the pronunciation of Tsingtao becomes more difficult over time. 😆 Although it's spelt Tsingtao on the bottle it sounds more like Ching-dao (青島). It's the name of a port city in the north that was occupied by the Germans who of course commenced brewing beer in their newly acquired territory.
If stuck on a desert island WITH a fridge and endless supply only one beer / lager.. what would it be folks ? Mine Stella unfiltered or Heineken. Both are clean and next to know hangover for me 😊
Dorada especial, which also would mean I must be stuck on lanzarote which wouldn’t be too bad at all since that’s the only place I can get the stuff 😂 5.7abv
have to say I am not surprised by the Tsingtao as have drunk it a few times and it really is very good, having said that I wish you had included the Aldi Rossini Gran Riserva as I think that would have been up there with the best as well
The thing about Tsingtao, it tastes ok to me, but everytime I tried it I got a headache after just one bottle, never happened with any other beer. Tsingtao keeps on an old tradition, the brewery was originally setup by Germans and it seems they still know what they're doing flavor wise. I just don't know what they do to give me a headache.
Thanks Simon for this Top 10 Supermarket Bottled Lager review. I think it was a very good comparison for the majority who might be going to pick up their usual and either can't find it or want to try something better. From experience whilst I was simply someone who enjoyed a lager but wanted something new it's not really any different these days than back in the 80s /90s (?) when a number of US and Canadian brands were introduced. By and large I loved most more than Carling and Tennents that were typical of the day. All went to pot once they were brewed here 🙁. Good to see you gave Tsingtao a fair crack as it's one great beer that no matter where you are, it is always the same. 🍻
How much does this come down to childhood memories? I remember in my late teens enjoying a couple of bottles of Budvar with pickled onion Space Raider crisps and thinking it was the best thing in the world.
More tea vicar? Great video! Tonight I did my own tasting with fewer beers than you tho. I had Paulaner Munchen Hell, Hofbrau, Orgininal, Bitburg and my wife got me a couple of bottles of Ikea Dark Lager which was quite good really. I wasn't able to pick a winner but at least with much less burping and farting 🙄
Was going to suggest you tried Victoria Malaga lager but just seen your review a year ago. Glad you like it. It's one of the three 660ml bottles for £5.50 in Tesco. Also managed to recently find it at my local Heron Foods for just £1.35 a bottle. Bargain.
Thanks for the video .Im from Northern Ireland and was in Surrey two years ago and discovered Stella Unfiltered in Sainsbury's and wow always drank normal Stella but agree with you so much better Unfiltered.Personally my choice is Stella Unfiltered then Warsteiner then Kronbacher .🍻🍻🍻
23:12 Having a good German pilsner with a suitable tache to accompany it! The fart mid way sealed the video for me - absolutely hilarious and entertaining! Good man, keep these coming.
I love the pilsner urquell and always grab a fresh tank beer when it's on offer. Budvar is good, staropromen is also decent. The bottle of staropromen you have there is the import, not the UK version. You can tell by the cream cap. The UK brewed version is different
I was over in the UK recently and tried a number of these supermarket beers. I was pleasantly surprised by the Stella Artois Unfiltered, but agree with you wrt that slight tinniness. I also sampled Madri (both bottle and from tap) and quite enjoyed it. Tsingtao is an absolute classic - I've always loved that stuff. As I live in Germany, I tend to avoid Krombacher, Paulaner, Warsteiner and co. I've never tried Steinhauser, but will seek it out next time I'm in the UK. Cheers for the entertaining and informative review!
Just natural, the burps make me laugh though. I love this channel, proper beer drinking community. We should all meet up for a beer one day. It is great, I'm having a 538ml Draught Guinness from LIDL, can't get them anywhere else. Gorgeous widget can. Love you all, Jon
I'm glad you didn't do Corona because for a premium lager, the quality is pretty poor and all I got off it was a weak taste and a banging headache. I used to drink it quite a bit, took me a while to notice how bad it really was, and now I'll never go back to it. I'd rather have a can of McEwans. No actually, now I think about it, that's rhetorical. Nothing is that bad, but you get my point..
I’m a draft real ale bitter drinker but I’m slightly curious to know why Peroni lager is not being included in any of his tastings and reviews. According to what’s written on the bottle it is an imported beer - not brewed in UK yet hasn’t been considered. 🤔 any particular reason for that?

@@nathanrodriguez780 haha literally, at least he got the ‘ching’ right 😂😂. I simply had to post this when I heard him pronounce it. I ordered it in Wetherspoons once and I remember the bartender just looked at me and said “oh, you mean ‘Ting-taow’” 💀.
Couple of surprises there with beers I've never considered buying before. Next time I'm doing a threefer I might give the Asian ones a chance..
That was a great video well done, some of my absolute favourites in there and my 2 favourite beers came 1st and 3rd. The only one I haven't tried is Menabrea but I have a bottle in my fridge so can't wait to try it.
Had a Tsingtao last night… Lovely lager after a week at work🍺
. You Sir are a Master Connoisseur of Beer and I have so much to learn from you. Thanks
Singha beer is my fave. I lived in Thailand and its stuck with me.
What do you do with the rest you don't drink? Or do you finish them the same day?
I think the Budvar is the most widely available out of these (I've not really seen much or tried a few of these tested beers). Bought the Budvar in Home Bargains on holidays last time £1.50. My go to beer. Never disappoints.
Krombacher Pils £3.50 for 4 cans in Aldi (correction - it's Rheinbacher).
Are you sure about the Krombacher, I've never seen it in Aldi?
Rheinbacher is £3.50 in Aldi but is a poor substitute for Krombacher.
It's not Krombacher in Aldi. It's another bacher. You can find many of these in Tesco. Lidl and Home bargains are cheapest for Budweiser Budvar.
@@Etalex77 4 330ml bottles of Budvar in Lidl of £3.99
@@Etalex77 yeah, I don't shop in (big) Tesco's much, that's why I don't get to see some of these lagers.
Both are clean and next to know hangover for me 😊
Dorada especial, which also would mean I must be stuck on lanzarote which wouldn’t be too bad at all since that’s the only place I can get the stuff 😂 5.7abv
currently in bavaria near tegenseer germany enjoying a paulaner octoberfest beer
Menabrea for me❤.
have to say I am not surprised by the Tsingtao as have drunk it a few times and it really is very good, having said that I wish you had included the Aldi Rossini Gran Riserva as I think that would have been up there with the best as well
This is without doubt my new favourite channel! ...
I drank Staropramen from a Bargain Booze until I found Warsteiner and Erdinger Weissbiers in a proper pub and had my mind blown
The price😢
Came across your channel, decided to try the krombacher, i don't even like lager, it was bloody nectar, cheers bud
One of your very best videos!
Big fan of Budvar. First drank it 22 years ago when it was sold in the local coop.
Hi Simon, great video as usual. Have you tried Bitburger Pils? It's an awesome beer 🍺
This is really informative, very good video xx
It's good that the recipe for warsteiner hasn't changed when carlsberg bought them over.fingers crossed!
Simon takes ten for the team.
Shame Supermarkets do not sell local beers at these prices
in spain still my go to when i go shopping i like spanish brewed san miguil as well
How much does this come down to childhood memories?
Bargain.
Great review. great video. Nice one !
Please do Stella unfiltered, bottles vs cans. They seem different to me and I like the cans even more.
Got the real great taste of East German bear in the early 90s while working there then fell in love with German & Belgium beer the best in the world
I've got comfy with some beer. Other contenders well noted. Some of the aforementioned beers are not as "accessible". Proper session.
Well done! Impressive performance by Singha. Have you done or thought about doing a budget, super market own larger top 10?
I'll have to revisit Tsingtao, I remember a mate drinking it my house and it was ridiculously skunky. Maybe stored poorly?
This video forced me to try Tsingtao, which I’m drinking as I type this. Very pleasant surprise, it’s excellent
