  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) had a critical view of science and technology. While he recognized their potential benefits, he also expressed concerns about their impact on human nature and society. Rousseau believed that scientific advancements and technological progress led to an alienation from nature. As people became more reliant on technology, they grew detached from the natural world, resulting in a loss of authenticity and self-identity. He also argued that science and technology corrupted human morality. The pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, without ethical considerations, could lead to the exploitation of nature and other individuals.

Wonderful! I take Rousseaus thought to be a relevant one for today. Even thogh I would not draw the conclusion, that we should abandon arts and sciences, but that moral advancement is not at all automatically connected to scientific progress. So I'd say, that the question, if the advancement in arts and sciences (which today seems to be more one of the later) leads to moral progress, has to be denied. And that moral advancement has to be thought about individually (seperately).

When philosophy finally demarcates our responsibilities sufficiently thoroughly from our tutelage by the mechanisms behind our genes, science leads to humanitarian progress.
After all, philosophy is also a science.
