  • As advances in augmented and virtual technology reinvent our relationship with ‘reality’, we are continually confronted with ever-more complex ethical and philosophical dilemmas. Making virtual interactive copies of human beings is now more than just a possibility. But once we open that door, how do we deal with the quandaries that lie inside?
Dr Jordan Nguyen’s mission in life is to improve the lives of as many people as possible and to be a driving force behind positive human and technological evolution into the future. He believes the relationship between humanity and technology is constantly changing and its role in our lives is becoming more integrated, leading us to a future that is ‘Beyond Superhuman’.
Jordan completed a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in 2012, and was awarded into the prestigious UTS Chancellor’s List.
Jordan has been on the board of directors for Object: The Australian Design Centre, is a member of the board for the NSW Medical Technology Knowledge Hub, and taught project development in Artificial Intelligence design and Biomedical Instrumentation for engineering masters students at University of Technology Sydney.

Very interesting. And thoughtful to include the emotional responses we'd have rather than just the technological advantages. Reminds me of The Congress, a movie with Robin Wright.

It is an interesting idea, however, a person is much more than their characteristics, mannerisms and likelihood (both physically and mentally). The person's personality and mental composition is very complex.

yes indeed, and it would take years for an AI to learn what a person is like to reproduce it, but even if its just a glimpse of the person, that would already be huge for recreating old thinkers, to give you advice in life how to move on from traumas, losses, job problems, etc.

Humans weren't designed to use their hands to press buttons all day, and our bodies weren't designed to sit all day and neither were we born to keep our heads still all day in front of our screens. We associate sitting with eating, as cinemas and shows encouraged a break involving a snack, which we associate when we watch a film on our tv, and now we are using screens most of the day, watching a screen during our working days, or school days, our evenings, its become sociable to engage on a screen to connect with our families, friends, celebrities, all the while thinking of food, when a break comes on or an advert appears, its time to raid the food cupboard, we are sitting down and eating is easy sitting and near impossible whilst in movement. Family meal times are interrupted by screens, meal times aren't the norm with everyone busy on screens, working from home, your near a fridge, at work snack are easy to have whilst working, and our phones have become part of who we are, the latest model makes you feel more acceptable to society, and today if you don't have one you become isolated from society. The health implications, is the damage done to our skeletal body, physiotherapists are required for injuries caused by sitting still all day, muscles are wasting, mental stress and fatigue, weight gain, are happiness declines as we are no longer actioning are own private thoughts and feelings of who we actually are, and if we aren't who we are, then who are we? Real physical activity is no longer the norm, and physical jobs are becoming the intrusion into our lives taking our minds away from our screens, missing out on the latest tweet, or saga pinging onto the screen. Love is lost, and technology has taken over.

I would like to share my opinion and concern with these some tech disrupt trend and what if these ever come to life someday?. I know to many of you these will sound conspiracy theory that i am about to tell you. If you guys imagine some fictional movies like "Minority Report, Gamers, The Matrix" ask your self these questions deep inside you "Did you really yourself, family and your next generation want to lived in these kind of world that we create for them?".
There are fine line on how far humans need to keep re innovate and make human life better and improve, but at the same time we also need to look the future outcome and consequent if some of the tech that we innovate will get perfected. There is a game called "Deus Ex Mankind Divided" and these game warn us the danger of human augmentation and how human will be divided that already are right now. I just hope some of you future tech innovator out there to please measure the possibilities of consequent and what negative effect and not just positive if you ever invent such device.

Okay.....Mr. SMART(I'm sayin this cuz I believe you're actually pretty decently 'brainy', from what I've observed, watching your "ted talk") At 8:30, you said something that I found pretty INTERESTING . I reckon that if you have read the Diary of Anne Frank(it's a must read(if you haven't already, go now!)), you can pretty much make out her everyday life, her thoughts & emotions, etc. just by reading it( and 'apparently' she's 'no more' (unfortunately)). So, for most of the 'general' public, you can just write a diary and revisit your past self, just keeping it simple, you know, instead of having something who's constantly sitting on your head, recording your behavior and movements, for future generations to watch you!
PS: Great idea,I hope you like my take on it too :)

fuck that, the potential that this concept could benefit the most is for medicine. think about it...wouldn't it be great to be able to virtually copy people as a mean of teaching people how to perform operations? or as blueprints in general, for doctors to consult ways to approach certain medical issues...idk..just a thought.

It is so weak, to spend your life on such sweet illusions. 3D dad - is not the real dad. what the pleasure to speak with unreal? ancient people wanted to know reality, to know themselves, know real people, now many strange people were born, which are actualy as robots with this ideas... they don't want go deep to the mystery of life, of their consciousness - they consumers of such foolish games and illusory "communication". Some already do not see anything strange in communicating with bots to avoid loneliness. crazy.
