    Cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy says that wet food is much better for cats than dry food, because dry food is more highly processed and has a much higher quantity of unneeded carbohydrates in it.

      I was literally just gonna say something like this! I’m watching this video cause our kitten, who will be year old in November so big kitten, just hasn’t been eating her dry food that much past several days. All the cats I have had I always left dry food out. I agree with you, they eat when they’re hungry! Never had a overweight cat in my life!

    I have 2 cats and feed them twice a day. They are nibblers and have a water fountain ⛲️ which they love. They are picky and do not like raw meat nor like eating wet food daily. I feed them wet food 3 times a week (meaty Mondays, tuna Tuesday, and sardines Saturday). Their coats are nice & shiny and they’re super healthy overall.

    What a vet chooses isn’t always the best food. There’s even corn & by-products in some of their prescription food. Corn and by-products are 2 ingredients that shouldn’t be in pet kibble. When I searched online most articles said 2 meals were ideal. However, at 12 hours or more a kitty’s stomach could become hyperacidic, causing kitty to be nauseous. Easy solution: 3 meals a day. For the people who say just place a bowl of food down & kitty won’t over eat, especially if you get him/her as a kitten: this doesn’t work for all cats (if it did there would be no obese kitties). There are a variety of reasons why a kitty might need to be portioned meal fed, each kitty is unique so you just have to figure out what works for your kitty. As for their diet: all dry? All wet? A mix? Raw diet? Again, find out what’s works for your kitty. My 2 cats that will be 9 years old soon tend to get diarrhea if they get a wet food meal everyday, so they get a wet food meal every second day & kibble for the rest of their meals. To the people that say cats are carnivores: that is not really true anymore. Cats are actually omnivores but there should ALWAYS be meat in ALL their meals. Plant food like: sweet potatoes & pumpkin helps a kitty’s stomach & digestive tract by helping it pass hair, clearing up diarrhea, vomiting, & constipation (of course if these last 3 things don’t clear up in 2-3 days, or there is blood in the stool a vet visit should happen ASAP). Blueberries are also safe for cats and are rich in antioxidants, fibre, & 4 different vitamins. Just to name a few examples of plant food that benefit cats. I hope this helps someone 🙂

    I’m raising twin sister kittens. I “free feed” them until full grown with food specifically made for kittens. They require special vitamins and minerals. Plenty of clean water. Small amounts of meaty wet food mixed with kitten safe veggies. And, they are growing like weeds full of frisky leaping, jumping, pouncing, playing, and sleeping safe and sound on my bed during the day and night. With me at night, always.

    Raw diet for my cat. If I can't feed raw diet, it wet food. I stay far far away from dry food. I noticed my senior cat couldn't handle two meals a day so I tried one meal a day and it didn't work, she was still hungry but her stomach has issues accepting one full meal. That when I started splitting two meals into four small meals a day. As she reached her 20s it was three small meals a day. All Siamese cats I've owned remain energetic right through their senior years. Probably why she still need to eat as much. Just glad splitting into four worked for her. She no longer with me. She lived until age of 22 years old, almost made it to 23 years old.

    If you start with a young cat you can leave dry food out all day, and supplement with wet foods periodically. I was lucky to get my cat at 6 weeks and he self regulates his intake and isn't fat at all. He is a big, tall cat at 11-12 pounds and he's stayed that size for the last year and a half. He also gets two wet treats per day to further supplement his fluid and pure enjoyment intake.

      That worked for me during covid since stores were out of canned food -- UNTIL constipation, megacolon, followed by NOT eating, (luckily only) $2k+ in vet bills, and almost killing him!
      As a new rescue, I fed him a raw diet but the vet flipped out - they put inaccurate notes in his record that i fed him "table scraps"! Because it was difficult to source some ingredients & I didn't have a meat grinder - I relented. Three years later, one vet in the office claimed I was "ruining" his teeth by not giving him kibble. So when empty shelves hit - I thought "Why not?"
      When he got sick I did a dry food deep dive & found what companies do is criminal! Don't take my word for it research it - companies are allowed to put euthanized pets 🐶🐱 in kibble & skin & bones, feathers & zero flesh!! The pet food oversight board is a sham. Industry chops up leather boot & coats & "renders" it "edible" for you kitty!🙀

    • @nneichan9353
      @nneichan9353 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@serenitytrek I too found out that 100% dry food is incredibly constipating. And it was expensive as heck to get him cured of his constipation. But when I tried to switch him to 100% wet he wouldn't eat much and lost 2 pounds, and he wasn't ever chunky to start. so we arrived at a mix of dry and wet foods. He eats about max 1/3 of a small can of wet food before he turns up his nose. I've spent a fortune trying to find wet food he will eat a lot of, and I just can't. So we are stable on the mix of dry and wet he is eating now with no constipation, no straining.

    My cat is a grazer. Food sets out, and she eats as she wishes. I can't feel her hunger. So let her eat as she wishes. She eats grain free dry n can food. Very healthy. One thing I need to add is, she is given 3/4 of a cup of dry food per day. And 1 can of wet food. She eats as she wishes. There is food leftover. So grazers aren't gluttens or pigs when it comes to food. They eat till they are full n then go do other things.

    A cat's style of eating must also be considered. Our 2 senior tuxedo cats are fed frequent, small portions of wet food because they are grazers, and will not consume the necessary daily calories in 1,2, or even 3 servings. They are offered somewhat larger portions 3 times a day, but my senior boy needs several small portions to make his calorie quota. They also get some dry food given more as a treat/snack than a full meal. The wet food is never left out for very long either, but picked up when it is clear they have no interest. Neither cat is overweight, in fact we have to keep coaxing our boy because he's become even more picky over the past 2 years. I gauge their caloric intake both by how much I give them and by how much they actually eat. I also weigh the boy weekly because of his increased pickiness.

    Depends on the food. premium foods will likely fill them up and keep them less hungry throughout the day. I usually feed a portion of wet in the morning, freeze dried treats in the middle of the day, a portion of wet in the evening and a bit of dry food out during the night. This allows them to get a variety.

    Learned that cats like what they like. Its not a one size fits all type of thing with cats. My cat hates fruits but likes chicken, beef, fish and dry foods. She's a picky eater so she only eats what she likes. It takes time to learn what your cats will like and some cats can control how they eat. My cat has taught herself to eat twice a day and if still hungry she comes to me when she feels like it. All cats are different. Just feed them healthy meals and they'll figure it out.

I did have one that turned into a little porker that way but ahh. The fur baby I have now does well that way she is just a few ounces over weight at 7 yrs old. But that may be due to the fact she does not like canned food or people food. My vet used to ask me every visit if I feed them canned food and when I said I did he would grill me for giving them canned food saying it was bad for them finally I got tired of the grilling and told him how would you like to only eat cereal only your whole life he did`nt say a word and that was the last grilling from him.

    Cats are generally grazers, if they do not wolf their food down, food should be left down . I give them wet twice a day and their dry food is always available. My diabetic cat eats about a cup of dry in a 24 hour period with tuna for breakfast and dinner mixed with a small amount of her dry food

      Actually cats are NOT “general grazers”. Cows, & horses are grazers but not cats, & neither are dogs. To classify an animal as a grazer means they are almost constantly eating all day, only taking a break to sleep, or when a human takes them away for an activity. Cats aren’t like this. A cup of kibble in a 24 hr period plus extra food is too much for a daily kitty intake, unless of course your kitty is over 20 pounds and is deemed a healthy weight. An adult cat that weighs 15-17 pounds should only be getting a total of 2/3 to 3/4 cups of kibble per day. Less kibble on days kitty is getting wet food

      Thanks for these thoughts, Ron. Sure, dry food may not be 100% as healthy as wet food, but it also has its pros, and it is more economical to some, and it's a great alternative for non wet-eater cats. On the contrary, cats are Hypercarnivores, meaning, 70% of what they eat and should eat is meat. Some cats do enjoy some fruits and veggies but should only be fed small portions only.

    I disagree with so much of the ‘information’ in this video. Cats need 100% protein, dry food only is not recommended as it will not result in optimum health and will not be enjoyable for the cat. A varied high quality wet food diet is best. Cats generally know what they need and do not enjoy the same food twice in a row. You must never leave water near their food as they are unlikely to drink as much as they should, this is an evolutionary trait as water can be contaminated by food. Raw food is good (bones) is great for their teeth and salmon, roast chicken, steak etc is packed full of the protein that they need. I have had many cats (for over 40 years) and I have always fed my cats this way. I leave high quality dry food out for them all day and feed them good human grade protein whenever they want it. My cats live an indoor/outdoor life in the hills on a large property so sometimes they get takeout and sometimes they come in for a la carte dining…sometimes the takeout makes it inside but that is another story…this video basically focuses on obesity, however if you feed your cat the protein that it needs, allow it to be a ‘proper’ cat and educate yourself about foods that are dangerous for them to eat, then it really is pretty simple. Also, cats are lactose intolerant so although they may love the taste and texture of all of these foods, they are not good for them.

    • @maxsmum3561
      @maxsmum3561 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I said 100% protein, I obviously realise that these foods are made up of other vitamins and minerals as well. Cats require more protein than dogs etc as their digestion requires it as well as the constant rebuilding of their muscles. Cats have the shortest digestive tract to body size ratio of any mammal, therefore the juices are just not present to break down plant based material.

    Cat is not a dog. Their stomachs don't expand enough to hold in lots of food - which is why feeding a cat once or even twice a day is not enough - no matter the stege in their lifes! The bare minimum for adult is 3 times per day. 5 times is actually the optimal ammount.
    You keep them from being obese by looking at how much they eat, not how often.
    Then again - if your cats are healthy and don't need any special diet, you can teach them to eat dry food and keep it out 24/7. Most will learn that there is no need to eat everything in one sitting.
    Sure, dry food is not as healthy as wet food, but there is only so much you can do when you don't have enough time to properly feed your cats. I always supplement the dry food with wet twice a day.
    As a vetenary technican I beg of you - do not feed your cat only 1-2 times per day! You will hurt them this way!!!

    Feeding a cat once a day is negligence. I dont care what she says. I have two cats and there is no way it would be enough. Also, it isnt true that leaving food around for them to eat results in obesity. Not in every case. My two have all the food they want and have never been overweight. They naturally regulate their appetite as they arent desperate to wolf it down before its gone. They can take their time.

      @cherieo’dell All cats are different. You can’t just fill a dish and leave it & have the same outcome for all cats. I have 3 cats that live with me that are proof of this. My female Hally, I left her alone overnight. I left her with enough kibble for 2 days just in case my brother-in-law’s car broke down. I got home about 20 hours later & there wasn’t one piece of kibble left in the bowl. Then there’s my kitty Zorro, he eats so fast that his brain doesn’t have time to single to his stomach that he’s full & he’ll just keep eating if it’s there. Then within 5-10 mins of him eating he’s throwing up the excess food. Portioning his daily food intake into 3 daily meals keeps him full & keeps me from cleaning up puke multiple times a day. Lastly there’s Mr. Thor, some days he eats good and other days he barely eats at all. By meal feeding him like I do with my other 2 cats I get the comfort of knowing that he did eat something. He’s a very sensitive kitty so if there’s too much noise out, if I’m not home, or if there’s any other distraction or disruption to his daily routine he’ll eat very little or not at all.
