    Around the 18 minute mark you mentioned the firing of Robert "Bobby" Lopez from SWBTS. The semester prior to his firing I was his teaching assistant, prior to that I was a student of his in 3 of his classes, and the treasurer of the drama club he was the faculty advisor for. I can tell you personally he was unfairly and unjustly silenced for suggesting that freedom from sexual sin (specifically same sex attraction) was possible through faith in Jesus. Other staff did not like that he was a point of controversy, even though the root of that controversy was the gospel itself and he was on the correct side of it. God bless Bobby and it was shameful how he was treated.

      That is so tragic to hear. If possible, the devil would no doubt be happy that such heresy and abominations are being taught in the very seminaries supposedly teaching future preachers of The Word. Thank you for your faithfulness.

    In the old “Battle for the Minds” documentary some moderate Baptists accused him of being a brilliant political operator and opportunist who was extremely liberal in seminary then jumped on the conservative bandwagon when he realized that was his path to power. It worked and it is really hard not to sympathize with those folks who said that back in the early 90s.

      Yes. A politician, or as John Strickland wrote above, "a brilliant political operator and opportunist." And that's what drives Al Mohler, his all-consuming desire for power among the men (and women) who comprise his base. This lust for power destroys whatever lies in its path, and often sexual misconduct (cf Ravi Zacharias) is much more about power and ego needs than it is about desire. And of course, you cannot serve two masters. So it's sad, because Al Mohler is indeed brilliant, but his priorities? Whom does he serve?

    Thank you for this thorough examination of Al Mohler. To be honest, I've listened to him sometimes, but wasn't a follower so to speak. But every time I heard him, I always got a strange vibe. He seemed intellectual for sure, but that seemed to override scripture. He seemed conservative, but that didn't always seemed to be rooted in scripture. And many times he spoke in circles and I wasn't sure what he meant. But he seemed to be the darling of conferences for awhile so I thought maybe others are seeing something I'm not seeing (I felt a similar vibe about the apologetics of Ravi Zacharias as well). I think the key here is the double-mindedness you pointed out, which James 1:8 tells us is a sign of unstable ways. When this happens, you will subtly, then increasingly, see a shift from the God-breathed, sufficient Word being your guide (2 Timothy 3:16-17) to violating Proverbs 3:5 and Colossians 2:8.

      @ministeronaldstimphil5448 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to get in on this a year after the first discussion, but I am realizing that when God is opening people/s eyes, it looks like double-mindedness. First, they may start questioning their former beliefs, then they reconsider them, and ultimately, they reject them for the truth. Those who do not wish to be changed by the Holy Spirit criticize them and call them "liberals in conservative clothing." The divine reality is different: those so-called conservative have only conserved their old ways of thinking, so that the true gospel is ineffective in their transformation. You really want to know who is right? Just look around you at the fruit of conservatism: darkness all around us. Where is that light that you are supposed to be for the world? Why is everyone leaving the church? Read Act 2:41 and Acts 4:4. When the preachers are in the truth, the church grows. Therefore, when they are out of the truth, the church shrinks.

    Sadly, the CRT movement reminds me of the ungrateful slave in Matthew 18 (verses 24-34). The true Gospel provides forgiveness from infinite debt. Yet sociologists add conditions other than faith in Christ for one to be forgiven of “racism.” Like the beleaguered fellow-slave of Matthew 18:28-30, according to CRT, you can never be truly forgiven! This movement thus damns all who embrace it (Matthew 18:34). In the name of Christ Jesus, flee CRT and have nothing to do with it, please!

    While I still frequently listen to The Briefing because I often find Mohler's cultural commentary to be insightful, I have to admit he does seem very double minded when you consider how he presents himself on The Briefing compared to how he seems to lead Southern Seminary. I think I also lean toward the conclusion that he is an opportunist. If he were genuinely as principled as he likes to appear, I think he would have pushed back against CRT and other progressive ideologies making inroads on Southern's campus under his watch.

      I think you're dead-on. Double-minded is the word. I think he uses The Briefing as his PR/branding tool, but the actual leadership actions at Southern Seminary show the heart. As he himself has said, "Look at the people I platform." He only elevates and empowers progressives who champion the causes of the left and give no benefit of the doubt to anyone on the right. Moore, Hall, Williams, Woods, and his less-infamous minions. Meanwhile, all three of the conservative faculty who voiced their concerns about Hall as provost? He fired them all within a year.

      Essentially everything I hear from him on The Briefing is very good analysis, even if I may disagree somewhat at times on some finer points. I know essentially nothing of how he runs the SBTS, although my pastor's son goes there.

    The root of the problem is that the Board of Trustees in these Seminaries are Liberal. The Trustees set the agenda and direction of the seminary; the seminary president is basically a figurehead who executes their agenda. This also means that the last several SBC presidents "elected" for the last several terms have all been liberal who appointed liberal committees and in turn liberal trustees. What happened? As always happens to once successful people who gain a taste of that success and what it can bring materially - it brings complacency and a willingness to cut corners to keep that success coming. And it also means accommodating to the spirit of the age (wokeness) and making the gospel just an appendage to that success.

    I am an Independent Baptist since I was saved in 1976. I believe this is the closest to the first church. Everything is local to the individual church. The second church I joined because I moved from Illinois to Arizona, was pastored by a man that left the SBC. He did not talk much about why he left. In the years since my membership in that church, I have heard many things about the SBC and I would never attend a church that is a part of this group. I appreciate the gentleman who made this podcast, and I would tell him that he should leave this convention and join an Independent Baptist Church and get on with learning and living the Bible and follow JESUS and only JESUS!

    • @tnairman83

    It would seem Mohler is a squish. Racism is an individual sin. No program, agenda or resolution has the power to root it out. Only individual reaction to the Gospel has that power. So preach that. CRT is based on the premise that accusation equates to truth. This is the same premise Satan has always operated under.

    If this (racism) is to be the unpardonable sin that no white Christian can overcome and if the popular belief that blacks can’t be racist then you are creating an entire people group that don’t sin and therefore don’t need the gospel. By defining the central problem with humanity as the sin of sins what is not being said is the central essence of sin is against the holy God and therefore there is no need for the gospel.

    The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him. Proverbs 18:17. I wish Mohler would answer clearly these accusations.
    Mohler is a Winston Churchill disciple. Not a bad thing to be. But one must realize that Winston was in both parties and supported his principles. Mohler might have taken on Churchill's style of doing politics.
    Just a thought....
    Mohler may be sitting in a precarious chair. He may indeed be the last bulwark of conservatism in a sea of wolves at SBTS. In order to keep his position perhaps he has to be careful which battles he stands upon.

Perhaps because I had no idea who he was (being raised Catholic) the first time I saw you showing us some of his statements (perhaps a year and a half ago when i first found you) i thought it was rather odd how much benefit of the doubt you were giving him. Sometimes when you have attachments to people it is hard to clearly see them for who they are. He is simply a con man who talks out of both sides of his mouth.

    Jon,
    How much do you think the fact that pastor’s retirement program being supplemented/funded by the cooperative program keeps pastors from being willing to be frank with their congregations on the state of things in the SBC and their leaders. As an example, the church I am a member of left this last year; we however included in our pastor’s package the fee required to sustain his retirement program outside of the SBC/Cooperative Program. It’s maybe a $500 a year penalty we pay for him, but things like this may have minister’s mentality captured in ways that laymen aren’t aware of. Disgusting if true, but not a small matter to be sure. Thoughts?

    • @nilwon
      @nilwon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Talk Dale Walker of Tennessee Pastor’s network. He is bivocational and I’m certain he can help your church not have to waste that $500/yr.

    • @TheSMEAC
      @TheSMEAC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nilwon we take care of paying the penalty for him each year so he doesn’t lose any vestment; my point is that there’s a wicked trap built into the cooperative program that at a minimum serves as a tacit anchor point for many of these pastors when their elders/deacons/boards/congregations begin moving for secession from the SBC. Many churches are making line item exclusions for their CP giving as well (i.e. designate that their giving not be distributed to any funding of ERLC, NAMB, SWBTS, etc.. ). The provable psychotic crap the NAMB has been teaching/pushing on their missionary training, the institution of affirmative action in hiring, etc is clear cause for any body to abstain from funding the NAMB. The contrivances built into the whole system of the mission boards, seminaries, and ERLC would have at least 1/3 of the congregations leave in a single year if they earnestly knew of them, I believe. But are pastors doing their people right? Are their people kept abreast of things? How many pastors were going to attend the Pastor’s Conference last year on their church’s dime without disclosing the slate of speakers or even that it was Dr Uth who was hosting?

I want to make sure we are careful because I do see people like him say things and because Social Justice Warriors use some of those same terms then it must mean that it's a knee jerk thing but with Mohler he simply sold out I think he figures it's a dad that will pass away but it's not unless we expose it and get a backbone, not letting them accuse us of racism or let their accusation hurt us because we know they use that as a weapon to silence arguments they cannot defeat.

I just think this guy has a ax to grind with Dr. Mohler. I don't know why. He cherry picks clips to support his view. This is not the Dr. Mohler I have been listening to for the past 10 years. It seems to me that Mohler believes that letting the discussion happen and the truth prevail is a better tactic than stridency. Good for him. Some people seem to have very little confidence that the Gospel will prevail in the end and it produces a great deal of handwringing. I have great confidence in the Gospel. I think Mohler does also. I think I can identify with Mohler a bit here. I tend to think even less of the shrillness of those I agree with than I do of the irrationality and misguidedness of my opponents.
