It always has been thus. Corruption always gravitates to wealth and power. That doesn't mean it always prevails, but it invariably has influence. The best we can do is curtail it to the best of our abilities as a society. But it will persist nevertheless. In my view, being overly cynical about it is counterproductive. Idealism is meaningless in the face of reality. That's best left to artists, poets, philosophers, writers and the endless procession of activists that have permeated history since time immemorial (I'm among them). Not that it doesn't matter. It does. It informs our views, our perspective. It changes the world in important respects. But deep down in the nitty gritty world of politics and power, it's a paltry token. Wars are fought. People are killed. Interests are the order of the day, every day. Power is what matters in the big scheme of things. You want change? Work towards political and economic power, because that's how it works in the real world.

The topic of discussion here must cover the broad spectrum of corruption in lots of so called democracies, especially the US.
I would say very few countries have true peoples democracies that don't allow the buying of elected representatives. I continue to listen in the hope this is not a trade of some useful insights mixed with propaganda.
The internet is actually exposing leaders who have falsely projected moralistic narratives. Gaza has ended all my respect for US democracy, or should I say Shamocracy.
The analysis of the Ukraine/Russia is TOTALLY false propaganda. What about the recordings of Victoria Newland who was instrumental in overthrowing a democratically elected government.

So, a "journalist" who reports on what has been reported, is best placed to advise on military strategy? On what basis does she conclude that Ukraine can win? All credible military analysts have disagreed profoundly with that strange assessment. Ukraine is losing. That was predictable. It would have been better to negotiate peace in March 2022. But none of these "experts" wants to discuss peace, not even now, that Ukraine's electricity grid has been destroyed. So yes, prepare for more refugees into Poland, and into Europe. This is not about democracy and autocracy. What a diversion from reality. It is ONLY about war and peace.

The West initially (misguidedly) though Russia would fold if tested hard enough being a hollowed out shell of its former self, if they just propped up Ukraine a bit and kept them from negotiating on day one...but it rapidly descended into a sunk cost fallacy where they moved to a proposition that if Russia was not going to fold right away they could use the Ukrainians to hurt them economically and militarily to a point they'd be set back on their heels for a generation or more even when they did win further down the line...
and yet Russia actually became a more dangerous opponent due to this meddling, seeing its entire war infrastructure modernized and battle doctrine overhauled to step up to the challenge...
leaving the West in a position where it can't simply back out for the loss of face it would show the world...but can't offer anything of value to actually help Ukraine come out of it in one piece...
At this point there seems no path that does not lead to the utter collapse of Ukraine...even if they fighting stopped tomorrow, its people have fled , its industries are wrecked and its finances are beyond recoverable...
Once again The West mints tomorrows enemies by today's misadventures...If we'd had to fight Russia at some point...fighting Its Pre 2022 capabilities would have been the opponent we'd wan't, not what we've helped forge in Ukraine...

The first minor red flag with this woman is that she writes for the Washington Post. The more serious one after 19:30, considering she's supposedly an accomplished investigative journalist, is that she's completely unaware of Thomas L. Friedman's interview in 1998 with George Kennan, the architect of the Cold War containment policy. It's available online. He's one of many expert voices at the time and since who have warned that we should have been working with rather than against the Russians who helped us defeat the Soviets.
Putin has been warning that NATO in Ukraine is a hard red line for 30 years, yet NATO leaders at the summit in June 2021 reaffirmed the decision made in 2008 that Ukraine would eventually become a member. The Cuban missile crisis proves that the US wouldn't tolerate it if the situation was reversed. I'm sick of all these warmongering neocons on our side, who are bringing us so close to nuclear annihilation, by saying Russia is evil, its all their fault, and there was nothing we could have done to prevent the escalation.

    • @Blanka1100
      @Blanka1100 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Putin invaded non Nato Ukraine because he wants Ukraine as a part of Russia. He knew he could invade non Nato Ukraine only. Natois an excuse, not a reason. Putin has always wanted russain empire back and he knew it would be impossible without Ukraineas a part of it. He does not want Ukraine to exist as a separate state. His feels "provoked" by Ukraine's independence. USA did not want to make Cuba a part of USA and did not say about Cuba anything like "it is not real" unlike Putin and Ukraine's case. Ukraine had zero chance to join Nato. Ukraine had no will to join before 2014. Putin blames Russia's past and present victims for calling the police. USA is a super power. Russia is not. USSR is gone. Eastern Europe is not soviet backyard anymore. They joned Nato in order to be secured from Russia's aggression because they knew Russia would come back sooner or later. Finland joined Nato because Putin invaded Ukraine and Putin did nothing. It proves it is not about Nato. Putin wants Ukraine. If Ukraine had been in Nato, he would have never been able to overrun Ukraine. Nato keeps expanding because countries apply for it. They want to join because Russia acts the way she acts. It is not a friendy neighbor. Never was. Russia has a break sometimes and that is all. Russians love playing the victim card. Eastern Europe is Russia's victim! Always! Start respecting their agenda, freedom, roght to decide o their own. Putin blames his victims for calling the police.

Sounds like a lot of pro-Putin propaganda. This current war was never about NATO. Ukraine was not in NATO nor about to join when Putin decided attacked Ukraine. You also left out that in Kennan's earlier writings he opposed Ukrainian nationalists because he didn't think Ukraine could sustain itself as a nation economically or otherwise. But he acknowledged if he was wrong in that regard then his recommendation against supporting Ukrainian nationalists should be rethought. The modern nation of Ukraine successfully existed since the 1990s.

One thing that may play a role is the perception of themselves as the "winners" in the Vietnam War. This was one of the first things out of the mouth of a Vietnamese student I had once, who I feared might be resentful of me, an American, because of the war... just the opposite, she expressed her interest in America and Americans, as "the losers" of the war with her country. I had never thought of it that way, but rather as a huge, senseless tragedy that nobody won. This really opened my eyes.

Taxes on worldwide income??? Last time I looked the US and Eritrea were the only two nations that did that ? That is too kleptocratic for most other kleoptocracies.

I nearly bought the book straight up- but a book that does not include the western duopolies, would not rate with me. Democracy is dictatorship by the majority.

Truth is one thing, deceit, is another. Even God deceived, when the whole host of heaven was present, God asked for "a volunteer" to deceive, lie to King. And cause the King to fall/die in a battle.
