Yes it is already threatening the traditional premium car brand and I'm a good example. I was considering BMW i4 eDrive 35, BMW 320i & Mercedes A250 but when the pricing of the new Model 3 is made official, I didn't hesitate to ditch the so called 'traditional' premium car brands and booked the long range version. Getting a much cheaper car with much better performance figures, better software, better ecosystem & arguably more features is a no brainer for me.
In the US and China actually the prices of a BMW 3 series, Mercedes C Class, Audi A4 do not differ much from a Tesla Model 3 so they are literally in the same 'premium' class based on the price point alone. Therefore when we can get the Model 3 at a much cheaper price in Malaysia compared to these traditional premium car brands, what's not to like?

Once you’ve acclimatized to one pedal driving you never want to go back. Such fine control from a single pedal is awesome You don’t have to use keycard. You simply have your phone on you and you can enter the car. When you walk away it locks automatically. Super convenient. Agree no moonroof shade is not optimal in the tropics; need a retrofit. Car could benefit from 360 camera view. Haven’t driven the stalkless car yet but offhand not in favor, again a retrofit can be had

Everyone is concerned about the word “Premium”. Tesla is challenging and trying to redefine this word. Does all the ‘Premium’ cars have full Acoustic glasses? The EQE has a full screen left to right…that’s a ‘wow’ factor…but is it really usable or needed…if yes, then how about making it even bigger? More is not always better. Do you know Merc EVs need to be ‘serviced’ every 12k km (and yes it’s not free!) ? Is this a definition of premium? BMW has also changed their interior to have lesser parts with ‘2 screens’ and some cosmetics and bling bling…but does the cosmetics lasts ? Also almost none of the other the EVs can be as light in terms of weight….which can spoil the handling. EVs is a whole new ballgame…traditional word ‘premium’ need to be redefined especially with the Chinese EVs looking so good too with a lower price point.

I do also think Tesla is not a premium brand. I may classified them as sub-premium. BMW, Mercedes etc EVs do have more premium feels especially inside the cabin. However, Tesla has incredible miles ahead in software, battery management, reliable supercharger system which integrated all of them within its powerful ecosystem. Moreover, their EVs don’t have periodic schedule maintenance. That is major plus point.

I understand how Malay does not favour Tesla as much. In Australia to get to somewhere we usually travel 20-40km. Everyone has solar panels at home and sell electricity as cheap as nothing. So it's very appealing to get a Tesla to harvest the free energy and to drive atonomously on freeways.

I totally get it that it doesn't look premium. The way I explained to myself is this is the future. Sooner or later cars would only have seats. Do you want Vertu or smartphones in 2024? So do you want a current car or a future car, ask yourself. This is a brand new car that I am buying so I am buying the future. To look nicer you need to get Model S, which is 2x the price. Are you happy to pay that much for Tesla? For anyone with solar powered homes Tesla is a must have.

Tesla works on the hard stuff first ( batteries, software, Gigapress(safety & getting prices down) etc..), while legacy auto brands does the easy stuff first( interior comfort/looks/feels etc)
once the hard stuff gets done, the fancy stuff can be optimized. that said.. tesla has a focus on price reduction ( so no good for early adopters) but good for s/h.
but once you step in one, and considering its current price. apple to apple..theres literally no competition currently. (civic? accord? camry? arteon? -- no comparison.
except perhaps BYD.. it will be interesting. especially SEAL vs M3. could it be like apple vs android ?

as a long time Mercedes fan, who has always dream of having a Mercedes myself one day, I'm converted when I got my ass into a model 3. Now my dream car is this facelifted model 3 by a huge margin. yes Mercedes provides luxury interior but I think tesla's interior feels more premium and simplistic at the same time, making it almost impossible to become outdated. also tesla is packed with tech unlike other premium brands and software update just makes it better. If you're using a car for 10 years or more, tesla would be way better than any other car brands now period.
