My roommate from college was a music therapy major. I am a music educator. Music used as therapy is amazing. Her research was in dementia patients. She would play old songs and hymns. Non-verbal patients would occasionally “return” from dementia and sing or hum along. Once she played hymns for a lady who nurses told her was a Christian. She said the non-verbal lady quoted a verse from Psalms while she played hymns. God is great and music is some of our last retained memories for dementia patients.

My grandmother was completely locked down by dementia and my mother would bathe her. One day my mother started singing, "Daisy, daisy, give me your answer do" (A Bicycle Built for Two) and Grannie unlocked dramatically and sang along with her. They would sing song after song and when the bath was over Grannie went into complete lockdown again.

@@jimbtv thank you for sharing, I was privileged to work In a care home as a very young women. I also experienced this. One lady was ussally very sad and confused. One morning she was mumbling what I relised was the Lord's prayer and I came over and prayed with her, I then sung hynm after hynm as I cleaned her room, she was smiling and joyfully the whole time and sung along a bit.

My dad was a semipro opera singer, and died two years ago from brain cancer. Even when his awareness and memory regressed he was still able to recall music and sing along. Music is a beautiful gift of God to the human soul. It confirms to us that we are not mere bodies with souls, or souls trapped in bodies, but will one day be perfectly united in body and spirit as Christ will be with His bride.

I have been married to a Certified Music Therapist with a Masters+ for over thirty years. There has been serious scientific research that shows a definite neurological benefit to music therapy beyond the emotional benefits. There may be a few practitioners who attribute additional benefits to some of the new age practices, but that is not the core of music therapy. There were times when my wife chose not to participate in some sessions offered at conferences being led in the New Age direction. As Melissa said, use discernment and pray for your friends that they be guided by the Holy Spirit as well.

Music is sound, vibrations, etc. What one does with it is the key. Music has many benefits, it's talked about in the Bible and is a form of worship.
But if music has a certain vibration, I think it could lead one to trances and ill meditation reflections. So as said, ask God for wisdom/discernment. If you get funny 'vibes,' then that is not the music for you. (For instance, 'heavy metal could have some demonic components.)
But sound is generic. It's how it's put together (making music) and what it's being used for that makes the difference.

Please thumbs up this comment so Melissa can see it! ❤️ There is a whole branch of new age music therapy referred to as "sound healing," and it is definitely worth making a whole video debunking it, because some claim that the method used to figure out these "healing frequencies" is of biblical origin.
The best key words to start your search with are "solfeggio healing frequencies," "sound bath," "healing tuning forks," "528 frequency " "432hz music, " "crystal singing bowl healing."
I was lured pretty darn deep into the new age for all of my 20s, dated a yoga teacher who later became a "sound healer" and would absolutely love to chat with you and share my firsthand experiences with you, because "sound healing" is honestly a whole rabbit whole full of crazy theories that are believable when you're already convinced about energies and frequencies in general. Plus, there's been at least one study that shows possible health improvements, which stops people from digging further.
Thanks as always for your fantastic content. Your videos are so enjoyable and well thought out. ❤️

I am a piano teacher and I have looked into becoming a music therapist. It is extremely involved and expensive. The basic requirements are essentially having a minimum of a bachelor's in music plus a masters in psychology. It is also helpful to play at least two to three instruments..
Then once you are thoroughly educated, there are not necessarily jobs for being a music therapist. The person would need to start their own business.
For me personally, I have been battling a disease called Myalgic Encephalomyolitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome MECFS. Playing a variety of music has improved my condition.
Listening to piano ragtime music provides me with energy. Listening to Ravel's, Pavane to a Dead Princess, is extremely cathartic and has helped to overcome depression. Now as I listen to the same piece of music I find it almost joyful. In other words, it has helped me to change my mood, my mind and my temperament. Almost a type of repentance. Amazing!!! And the result, I am now about 80 percent well🎉.
Yes, God does answer prayers of healing...I was once legally blind in my left eye. Found the right doctor to do 2 corrective surgeries, now I am 20/20 in that eye.
May God continue to bless you and your family 🙏.

@@MelissaDougherty Now you know three people with ME/CFS. However, sadly music of all kinds increase my pain and fatigue symptoms rather than helps them like Monique's. Though I'm giving my body a break currently, I have a habit to listen to one worship song a day. I do so out of love for the Lord and a desire to worship him. The lyrics help me do that despite the pain. Sometimes I can't finish the song, so I'll try to finish by reading the words as a poem. I am aware of other people with ME/CFS who are very sound sensitive like I am. It goes to show how wide the spectrum is with this illness. In regard to music therapy being new age or not, I imagine the need will be to examine on an individual therapist basis. I know of someone who calls what she is promoting music therapy but bases it on the energies and frequencies of the universe as the healing properties. She wanted to teach me all about it, but after reading her website describing her philosophy, this new age mindset was evident so I declined. That doesn't mean all music therapist have the same philosophy, but I don't know any to say there are ones who don't have questionable ideas. Good advice you gave to ask lots of questions!

@@dianafleenor939 I am sorry for your condition, but I don't agree with you about connecting music therapy with the new age in that manner.
Of course it can be manipulated in that sense (everything can be manipulated) but in its essence it is not a new age.
God gave us physics to understand His gift to us - frequencies and energy (among other gifts).
That doesn't mean that "the universe" is healing us, but it is God healing us through His gifts to us, we just have to learn how to use it.
Besides being a musician, I have a MA in journalism. My MA thesis was about deconstruction of propaganda manipulation, which includes sound manipulation as well (manipulation through music and frequencies in general).

To keep the beautiful keep sake of your family rosary....please do!!! It would be terrible to give it away or throw it away.......
Doing my own research, praying the Our Father is Biblical. Praying the Glory Be is Biblical. Praying the first portion of the Hail Mary is Biblical.
The second portion of the Hail Mary is almost Biblical......most Protestants will state that praying to saints and Mary is not Biblical. Most Roman Catholics will say it's fine. It's simply like asking a friend to pray with you who is not physically there.
It's simply dependent upon your relationship with God and your family..... it's completely personal. It's a decision based upon your conscience .

RN in training here🙋‍♀️. Music therapy is an intervention we use to relieve pain, stress and anxiety nonpharmacologically. Like you said, a person can choose to elevate and idolize anything, but there have been a ton of scientific studies completed to show that many people respond positively to music and music therapy may allow for individuals, especially those with chronic pain and conditions, to use an alternative to or in conjuction with medications.
That being said, while it's easy to idolize and elevate anything above God, as a Christian worship is incredibly powerful. I would go on a limb to say Christians are taking part in music therapy through worship of the creator. It's not the music itself that is cleansing and healing, but the closeness and intimacy we feel praising and pouring love onto Him in response to the music. God gave us music as a unique way to connect with him. It invokes feelings we can't rightly express. One of my favorite verses in Romans, (and I'm paraphrasing here), notes that the Spirit intercede with groanings too deep for words because we don't have the words ourselves. Music and worship is so often that intercession for me. I can pour myself out to Him, despite the pain and suffering I may be experiencing and praise Him wholeheartedly. That is therapeutic, but He is doing the healing.
I have yet to find a person, christian or not who doesn't respond to music. It's used in the Bible again and again. There's an ENTIRE book devoted to it! God does not highlight anything unless we are to pay special attention to it.
So long story long, while anything can easily be cultivated into new age thinking, Music therapy itself is not a new age practice. It's not a magic cure to pain and chronic illness but it has been significantly proven from extensive research that it eases patients stress response in a therapeutic way to better manage the effects of those things. Christians are walking proof of this. There's a reason Music speaks to all of us. Our God is an artist. He is THE creator, so while music to the average person lowers stress hormones and manages physiologic symptoms, He uses it to speak to us and intercede where we don't have the words to repent adequately. Where words fail music speaks from our innermost being, the Spirit himself! Music, specifically worship, from a Christian is a love song and heals our spiritual wounds which gives us the strength to persist with our physical wounds. After all it's by His wounds that we are healed and we'll leave our physical wounds behind when we ourselves ascend to the Father to be fully healed ourselves and there we will spend eternity doing what? The Bible tells us we will spend it WORSHIPPING the King!
I would spread a word of caution to those who minimize the power of Music. While everything in this broken world is subject to abuse, by demonizing the gifts God has given us we liken ourselves a Pharisee.

Yes like art therapy or dance therapy. Something that helps people express feelings work through trauma. Given my experience with conventional therapy, I struggled to think that any kind of therapy is useless without the power of the Holy Spirit. I am someone with significant health issues and CPTSD. There is quite a bit of work showing that those who suffer CPTSD often avoid music as a whole because of connected memories. There is music I do well with and music that triggers me because of memories. What I don’t understand is why some meditation music triggers major anxiety and others don’t. I can’t say I have any memories that are connected to that. There seems to be no rhyme and reason or consistency with the types that trigger me.

My 15 year old son is in music therapy for his sensory disorder. He has been going for 3 years and it really has given him an outlet to better deal with everyday life. I don't know how all music therapy works but the way ours works is that my son learns how to play an instrument while he talks with his "teacher/therapist" He plays the drums and some weeks he just plays the whole time, some weeks he talks half the time and plays the rest of the time, and some weeks he talks most of the time. They also have a sensory room he can use before or after his sessions. For our family this has been a blessing from God! It's not spiritual or Christian in any way but God is working through it to help my son. In fact my son has shared with his therapist about our church and Jesus and he was very open to hearing about it so it's not hostile to Christianity. But like I said this is true of our place I don't know about other places. I had not hear about music therapy till a friend said her daughter was in it and thought it would be good for my son and that was only 3 years ago.

I am a music teacher and have used music therapy techniques for my special needs and geriatric students. Using piano to help students to build motor skills by isolating individual fingers is a great way to help low motor students. Also learning to play an instrument has shown positive effects on memory loss in elderly students. I think the idea the music therapy is New Age could stem from the fact that we interact with the arts differently. Music is a multi stimulus tool. We read it, hear it, and perform it all at once. This is high cognitive function all at once. We also find that (similar to smells) we tend to link music to experiences we had in life. We remember our song at our wedding so when we hear it we think of that day and our significant other. It isn't New Age, it is cognitive association. I think we need to acknowledge that the arts is a powerful tool that was built into the fabric of being human. Look at the Psalms, the artistry of the tabernacle and the temple, the use of incense, and even the dancing that was spoken of in the Bible. All of these things were made to glorify God by bringing us closer together. Sorry for the long answer.

When my great grandma was in hospice she was totally out of it and basically just writhing around in pain. We visited her and I played hymns on my violin- it was the only time at the end that she was slightly coherent and wasn't in pain any more. So many memories are tied to music, and it can definitely help with pain and dementia!

I thought when describing church with Capital “C” was in reference to the Catholic Church and small “c” in reference to the church world wide as catholic simply means universal. Also, I do not practice yoga because it is a Hindu aesthetic and not compatible with Christianity. Even the poses are worship to Hindu gods,; therefore there is no separation between the physical and the spiritual components. Some Christians practice yoga and say I am being legalistic. Am I being discerning or legalistic? The same goes for not reading my horoscope for entertainment. Is this discernment or legalism?

To me it gets kinda fishy when you look into frequency/resonance healing (basically saying certain vibrations and frequency can heal).
It’s been a hot second since I researched it but this kind of healing practice dates back to ancient Egypt and Isis worship for healing. Beware how deep you go trying to heal without consulting God’s will and asking for Him to heal and direct you. Just my two cents on it😊❤

I originally had gone to college to become a music therapist. The curriculum and discipline is very detailed and scientific to give a framework in order to perfect it to an art to help others who can benefit from the treatments. The therapy can help physically heal by connecting movements for playing instruments to the muscle memory needed from the brain, or it can be used as an auditory means for emotional growth and development.

I am a Physical Therapist who works with adults and we very often use music for people with Parkinson's disease - It is amazing how it assists with movement, energy, cognition and mood. When you can have someone move to a "beat" /rhythm there are real changes that can take place in the brain (see scholarly articles). Motor, social, cognitive/communication can all be effected by music. I see many people with other disorders who when I "sing" (not the opera - but like with a beat or rhythm) it helps with walking and motor skills; I've seen patients with Alzheimer's come alive with music - this isn't 100% but it can be a helpful/powerful tool. I can and do "use" music sometimes to manipulate (in a good way) mood/cognition/motor and make people more receptive to the interventions I have planned to benefit them.
Why do you think Bars, restaurants, stores and Gyms play music? It's a way to manipulate, just like the dim lighting in places etc. - We are sensory beings!
This is why we should be careful how we place music at the "center" of our "worship" - Mood is changed, people move their body etc... not that those are bad things. Add the contemplative words, or other poor theology and we could possibly be more receptive to the ideology within the music or what comes next after the music is played. Music can be a wonderful way to sing praises to God! Lets focus on His Word and let music be a lovely way to praise Him without being manipulated (in a bad way)!

Mutual friends really did think highly of her. After a date night, she told me that she believed that we directly ushered in healing according to our faith, based on Isaiah 53:4-5. It caused quite the argument, and not long after I broke off our relationship. It didn't matter what scriptures I used to help her understand my walk, She simply had it figured out. I still pray for her to this day, as she married just months after our split. We must be on guard even with other believers.

It became quite clear to me that I shouldn't be delivering Sound Therapy sessions anymore because the affects are inevitably altering a person's state of awareness and affecting their brainwave state. Furthermore, Sound Therapy is very much associated with New Age practices. Music Therapy is not New Age. Engaging with music and playing musical instruments can give a voice to those who can't express trauma verbally.

Music Therapy is an intentional use of this knowledge. It's a tool! Like a hammer, I can be extremely helpful, but it can also be dangerously misused. I would put this in the category of massage. To answer whether it's dangerous & ungodly or safe & Godly depends on the heart & intent of the person using it.

This is concerning to me. The very roots of yoga are based on Hinduism and Buddhist teachings. Nothing about it is for Jesus. Stretching isn’t sinful but these poses are literally done in yoga to bind oneself to Hindu deities. There’s no way Jesus can be connected to this practice. Again; stretching is one thing. Yoga is antithetical to Jesus. This opens up oneself to kundalini and deeper issues. Yoga is meant to bring about nirvana or in Hinduism - moksha.

My colleagues and I performed annually at the Bath, NY Veteran's Hospital and Domiciliary for all their military patients, residents, staff, and administrators.
We were highly motivated to pour our hearts out for the eggnog, and sugar cookies waiting for us just around the corner, or elevator ride to every performance.
Ah, Yes... fellow 9-10 year old coworkers and I performed Christmas Carols in our brass choir receiving thunderous applause, tears of love and joy and sadness on the faces of broken men carrying feelings too deep for words.
Ours must have been an exceptional training program. In the matter of only a few months, we transformed dented old brass, spit, and valve oil into a thing of beauty.

Thank you so much for your biblical and well balanced answers and advice! I was saved in a Pentecostal church that I loved, but after contracting a severe long term illness I was made to feel like it was my lack of faith that kept me sick, so being spiritually battered by that, I left. I found an EV Free church that, unbeknownst to me was hyper-Calvinistic, teaching that God only loves elect people, children who haven’t professed Christ go to hell, and Lordship salvation, etc. So after years of struggling and praying about this, I also had to leave what was and still is a wonderful body of believers. Sitting under a teaching that so maligns the character of God, and so elevates the teachings of certain men to the level of the Bible itself shows me that spiritual abuse occurs when secondary doctrines are taught from church leaders and authors as if they are primary, which (like you said) inhibits spiritual growth rather than encourages it. The hyper-charismatics emphasize man-centered faith and the reformed put their faith in man-made teachings. Thru all this though, God is teaching me to trust Him alone and to interpret His Word correctly, without the admixture of man’s teachings. I love your description of prescriptive vs descriptive passages - so helpful, thanks - God bless!! ❤

Christians must not find a church that appeals their their feelings and subjective preferences. Rather, they must seek a church that faithfully preaches God's Word, adheres to Biblically observing the Sacraments of the Lord's Table and Covenant Baptism. Furhermore, they must have a solid eldership who properly shepherd the flock through discipline and exortation. Their worship must by guided not by the entertainment of man, but rather the Regulative Principle of Worship singing the 150 Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs God has inspired rather than uninspired hymns written by heretics like Isaac Watts, Hillsong and the like. Lastly, upholding sound confessional theology in all areas of life in faith and practice like expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Three Forms of Unity guards angainst prelacy, mini-popery, priestcraft in worship (use of priestly vestments, musical instruments, icons/pictures of Christ, sacadotalism, etc.

Hello friends. I 100% agree that we are not healed by manifesting it, but can anyone explain or point me to a video that explains what Jesus meant when he said “Your faith has made you whole?” Years ago, I attended a church that taught it was our fault if we weren’t healed due to a lack of faith. While I was able to stand strong against certain WOF teachings at this church just by reading the scriptures, this one got me and caused me quite a bit of hurt, only because I had read in the Bible where Jesus said “be it unto you as you have believed” and “Thy faith has made you whole.” I’d love to understand a proper interpretation of these verses if anyone knows. If someone apostazizes from the Reformed faith and takes on the soteriology of the cults, aka synergistic Arminianism or denies the closed canon of Scriptures, aka continualism, that man has already left the church. A good church would have elders on top of correcting errors like those and diciplining members of the flock who stray theologically from the faith once and for all delivered unto the saints. That's the problem with a lot of churches today. They lack any kind of accountability and end up with limp writsted and feelings-based congregations.

Music is a big deal to GOD. Christianity is the ONLY "religion" where SINGING to GOD is done. It's the only practice that USES music to connect with GOD. David played music and an evil spirit left Saul, so, uplifting music is a thing. The issue is obvious and that is while it can work while the music playing, what about when it's not? In the end, you still have you work to do in the spirit and we still have to WALK with the LORD and be obedient to the HOLY SPIRIT to be in right standing with the LORD.

I had a deliverance/inner healing meeting with someone in pastoral care at my church in the past few months. While in that meeting, I called this person out on the fact that they used numbers to prophesy things over me on a phone call we had had previously, especially since I have dabbled in new age stuff before. They asked me what my birthday and my age was and they broke down what each of the numbers meant. I ended up asking straight up at the end of our meeting, in person, where in the bible I can find this since they said that numbers and their meanings were in the bible, and the person said, "Let God show you." I thought it was pretty weird and dismissive. My parents and my mentor did too. It makes me wary of trusting church leaders now. What should I do???

I was in a word of faith denomination for decades and it messed me up. I kept hearing from people about how they prayed and declared and decreed and things happened. Meanwhile, I’m doing the same thing and I’m seeing nothing. I may think Andy Stanley is going down a wrong road but a few years ago I heard him say that the word of faith movement makes it a lot easier for people to walk away from Christianity altogether. I can attest to the truth of that statement. I was just about ready to leave the church and never go back. Andy’s words were very validating to me and helped me understand what the WoF movement had done to me and was doing to others.

For myself, I wanted to leave my church over changing my beliefs about women and their ability to preach. But on taking time to really examine my heart on it, I realized I needed to stay.
I'm in a wonderful church that's passionate about serving others and preaching Jesus. They have many different beliefs that members have, and keep strife low. I admire that and I understand that it's worth it, to keep on preaching and helping our community. I think it's so close to the rapture, I don't need to relocate my faith community. But I know that some are called to, after prayer.

What would your response be to this situation: An assistant pastor of a Baptist Church got up in front of the church on a Sunday morning and said he has had a problem with smpking and he is going to consult a hypnotist to help him stop smoking?

Music therapy is scientific. It began in the 90's with patients who were in comas. From there it expanded to ease anxiety, reduce pain and increase healing. We used it often in our trauma icu and neuroscience icu. It had miraculous results with many patients.

I am a Christian music therapist and have practiced for a number of years. I studied music therapy at a Christian university. Where I live (in Canada) you need at least a Bachelor's level (4 year) degree in music therapy to practice as a music therapist. In addition to that, you need to complete an accreditation process through our professional association. It is a fairly well-researched profession and the emphasis is on finding the most effective ways to harness active and passive music experiences to benefit people with a wide variety of challenges. In my career I have worked mostly with children and adults who have intellectual or learning disabilities, autism, or ADHD. I have designed music programs to support their social skills, self-esteem, emotional expression, attention span, learning, etc. Music therapy is particularly helpful with people who have communication difficulties or are otherwise difficult to reach (for example, people with dementia, as many here have already noted). They may not be receptive to speech/language, but music accesses a different neural pathway. It is a fascinating field and can take many, many different forms. I have never seen it as new age or used it that way, and in my experience, most music therapists are not practicing from a new age perspective. But I suppose there may be some who are. There are different schools of thought within music therapy, just as there are different schools of thought in the field of psychology. There are also people who may use music or sounds for different things and call it "music therapy," but they are not accredited as music therapists by our professional association. Misrepresentation of our field is fairly common.
I have recently decided to leave my career as music therapist, at least for the time being, for other reasons. One being practical - it's very difficult to make a stable income. The other being personal/spiritual - the pursuit of musical skills to become a better music therapist became a sort of idol (and a source of grief) in my life. I have never felt that I could measure up to the high standards of musicianship that are placed on people who practice music therapy. I am no longer sure if this is the path God wants for me. But my decision has nothing to do with it being new age. 🙂

Great Q&A today! I greatly appreciate your wisdom and discernment on all the topics today. I am a continuist that went to a "word of faith" type church for many years. It wasn't until I started, systematically, reading the Bible from cover to cover that I realized how many verses were used out of context. I then started listening to bible teachers from different camps. Initially, this helped me get centered, but then I went into the opposite "ditch" from watching too many cessationist/calvinist heresy hunters. I have been attending an independent Baptist church for 4.5 years. They are very open to the move of the Holy Spirit and the preaching is sound. However, we can't be used in the church where we are gifted because we have to be members. We can't agree to the confession of faith concerning certain gifts of the Holy Spirit not for today and once saved always saved. These are secondary issues, but are weighing heavily on us now. We live this church but have started splitting our time with a nondenominational church. It's so hard to find a Charismatic church that isn't whack-a-doodle (NAR, Word of Faith, etc.).
