I was in the market for a Sub, but I just couldn't drop almost 15k on one. So I really started looking at Omega and Breitling, specifically the Ocean Master 600 and the Superocean 48. I finally pulled the trigger on the Breitling since it's more robust with Ti DLC casing and I'm using it daily plus surfing, etc. There are so many amazing watches out there from Oris, Tudor, Breitling, Omega, Micro Brands, etc. Great video!
Those are more realistic alternatives to a Sub. I bought a Seamaster myself. I highly doubt that someone in the market for a Sub views a Casio or Orient as alternatives, though lol
Teddy, I hope you become the authorized dealer for Certina. Too bad they aren't that popular in this part of the world. Their DS Action Divers are gorgeous. With a ISO 6425 certification too! Keep up the good work bringing Certina into the limelight.
@@Lightdog555 I absolutely love Tissot. Can’t beat them for value. And will always have a special place in my heart. But Certina has real dive heritage and better build quality. One can hope they get some love too here in North America.
I agree with saving up for the Sub if that is what you ultimately want. I've wanted once since I was a kid and I saved for a few years before buying one. The Orient dive watches are quite nice; I was blown away by the quality relative to the price. I am bummed Seiko stopped the SKX-007. On an Uncle Seiko Jubilee, it's such a nice package. I also agree with you about the Superocean not getting enough love. That was my first expensive watch and they are really well made, although a bit on the thicker side of things. I think part of it might be their use of ETA movements, although Breitling ETA movements are really exceptional workhorses.
You seem to always forget the Certina Action Diver family, in different sizes, they have the Powermatic 80 inside and they all cost well under 1000usd.
Breitling Superocean 44 was my first luxury watch purchase. I like the weight of it, and the bracelet is really comfortable. Its got a funky set of numerals which I like as well. I recommend it, but I feel in comparison to a Sub there is closer models. I think its got enough merit and cache brand wise to stand on its own rather than be a compromise to a sub.
I prefer my Omega SMP 300m over the Seamaster Heritage. I also own a BB58 & Planet Ocean. I love them all & prefer them over a traditional Submariner. I know it’s an iconic piece, but it’s just way too vanilla for my taste. The only Sub I’d buy today is a Cermit. Excellent video Teddy!
Even if the Rolex Submariner was in my price range, and it was available, I would still choose these alternatives that Teddy featured in this video. In my opinion they look better, and it has the added benefit, when you purchase them instead of a Rolex, of you not contributing to the unjustified hype around Rolex. We, as watch enthusiasts, need to stop feeding into the cult of Rolex. If you genuinely like Rolex, more power to you. However, don't buy a Rolex just to flex and say you got a Rolex.

I know it's pretty popular to be trashing Rolex these day , but they are still building some exceptional peices. It's the people that don't actually dive with them that trash them the most . I bought my first Rolex Submariner in 1968 and have added to my Submariner collection over the years. From my very first 5513 to my newest 124060 , they are first and foremost still a tool watch . I own examples of the last 3 watches on your video , and they are great watches. I've dove with them all but my first choice will always be a Submariner. They are the all around most robust , tough, accurate, dive/tool watch around . At least that has been my experience with them .
I have the Orient. It’s definitely lacking in any wow factor and both the crown and bezel are a little slick and hard to operate. That said, it just works. Size is perfect on a slender wrist. The silicone band is very good. So good I’m thinking of getting an extra one to put on my Turtle… replacing the oversized buckle Seiko strap. I see the Orient as an everyday around the house and outdoor watch. Inexpensive enough to not worry about and yet cool enough to be in the collection. And you can’t beat the price
For various reasons (movements, bracelets or overall design) they're all *imperfect* except the Tudor BB58, the Rado CC and the Omega. The Blancpain is pretty much perfect but the price is just silly.
Lot’s of beautiful pieces here (particularly the BP and the new Seamaster) but there’s no substitute for the real thing IF that’s what you desire. I bought the SD43 because because I knew I’d always long for it. Life is short, buy the watch you really want.
The Breitling Superocean 42 can be purchased new for around $2800 black dial on bracelet in the grey market. At that price there is nothing out there that beats it in build quality, brand heritage, and ease of servicing.
Good one here, Teddy. You speak to an eclectic group, which I love. Some videos for those who can afford a few grand and some for those who can’t. 🤙🤙 Also, I love the Certina mention. Beauty brand that doesn’t get talked about enough DS8 with anthracite dial is sexy AF
Have to agree the Mido Ocean Star is a great watch for the money. I have the same one you had shown in the video. It's my daily driver and the bracelet is just perfect for a watch at this price point. No push pins on this watch has quality screw link adjustments and just a feel the watch should cost more. I love the day/date and really, I would say it's more of a Seamaster Alternative.
Save up and “GO FOR THE REAL THING.” I had several high end watches that were $2,500-$4,000. They where nice, but I still felt like something was missing. I should’ve went for it and got a Rolex instead of buying 3 watches over the courses of years equaling up to $11,000. So save up and you’ll be happier in the end.
One issue not mentioned is the visibility of the inner minute markers. If they are on a steep rehaut /chapter ring like the Casio you can hardly see them especially in low light. Better when they are flat on the main watch face like the Mido.
The only brand I seem to collect these days is Seiko. Just can’t see past them. You don’t get the bragging rights but you do get a very good watch for modest money.
I do not have a problem with your list except for the Seiko… I just can’t get over the styling, lineage, image etc…. I will even go with the at $60 watch over a Seiko… I know they are great watches but every time some one tees up a Seiko dive watch I become nauseous. Also, Blancpain is the dive standard and would dominate the market if they would scale back the size to 40mm instead of the huge 44mm.
Just picked up the Orient kamasu. I was in search for a Submariner but ended up with a datejust which I do love. Somehow I still have the itch for a Submariner, but short on budget for another Rolex. An Orient will do for the time being.
It’s almost funny how you sometimes seems to read out minds in terms of content - or just really do know you audience. After your last one, I swear I thought: “I would really like a video on Rolex Submariner alternatives and dive watches in general, covering many price ranges”… Another excellent one! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great picks overall. I would have swapped an offering from Squale (probably a 1545) over the Rado. The captain cook doesn’t give off any submariner vibes for me. But again, great video.
I had the Citizen Promaster in blue (yes, that exact model comes in blue, but not in the U.S.), and it was a lovely watch, but just too big, so I ended up parting with it. But a phenomenal value if it fits you.
For 700$ the watch I picked for that classic dive watch vibe is the Yema Pearldiver. A beautiful watch that I wear almost everyday since last April and it survived all my hikes and adventures, from lakes to mountains to extreme cold.
So funny looking at the Tudor and how strongly it presents as a little more refined influence from the MKII Kingston watch that long before preceded it.
Hi Teddy, I love watching your videos and really admire your balanced and incisive evaluations. Would have liked to see Longines Hydroconquest somewhere in the list. Somehow Rado doesn't strike that chord. 👍
I think it would be fair if you did a video on Rolex submariner hommage watches. There are so many great once out there like San Martin SN004G that looks like the Rolex Submariner 6538.
Thank you Teddy! Great video, as usual. I really expected to find Glycine (Combat Sub series), Yema (Superman series ), maybe also Oris?. Glad you put in the list also the Tissot Seastar, the Mido, Orient, the The Rado C.C. and I agree with all your choices! Stay safe! Have a great life!
Picked up an 80's version Tag Heurer at a consignment shop for $100 ... a bit scuffed and worn but I had it verified at an AD before finalizing the purchase - 200m Professional diver, 37.5mm case, 9mm thick, sapphire crystal, original jubilee bracelet ... quartz but hitting all the markers - don't sleep on vintage.
Many watches out there that are just as nice if not nicer ....i went with a TISSOT a year or 2 ago. .. And fell in love with the brand ..but always knew about TISSOT quality ..just didn't pay much attention to them ..being under swatch group ..they have a great movments . And the name has history .
16:46 disagree. It'll wear closer to a 42mm than a 40mm due to the large 48mm lug to lug and the thin bezel which allows for a much wider field of view of the dial.
Other options are Lorier Neptune, Christopher Ward Trident series, weirdly Sinn 104 (even though it's not a dive watch). Also, if you don't need a rotating bezel take a look at Panerai Radiomir and Luminor series (In personally not a fan of Submersibles)
I've only started following the channel recently, and received my Casio Duro earlier this week (thanks for the recommendation, Teddy!). Very happy with the purchase, it looks good but doesn't feel too precious. My seconds hand is perfectly aligned, which was a relief! Changed the strap to a Barton, and it's all good to go!
I am glad you didn't choose the Seamaster 300M. It seems to be the only diver people buy from Omega. Maybe it is the price. I think the perfect Omega is the Planet Ocean. I absolutely love Mido as well. Great video as usual.
I don’t disagree with any of those but I’ll definitely throw in the Longines Hydroconquest.
This is what I purchased last month, two tone silver/gold, love it.

The only brand I seem to collect these days is Seiko. Just can’t see past them. You don’t get the bragging rights but you do get a very good watch for modest money.
Have to make a pitch for the Omega Planet Ocean, the 39.5mm. To quote Ben Stiller (something else I don't see nearly enough of): "Do it. Do it."
Imho the Citizen promaster you,ve shown is a direct, pure copy of tag heuer aquaracer black (43 mm ceramic bezel).
Just picked up the Orient kamasu. I was in search for a Submariner but ended up with a datejust which I do love. Somehow I still have the itch for a Submariner, but short on budget for another Rolex. An Orient will do for the time being.
Dare I say, you missed JLC. Not only do you have the Master Compressor, but the Polaris is a darned good option too.
These watches are nice and all but... what jacket you're wearing Teddy? It caught my eyes more than any the watch in the video.
Hi Teddy, i think the Tudor black bay s&g is an underrated divewatch. The 5012 inhouse movement with date ist fantastic
Greatings from Germany
It’s almost funny how you sometimes seems to read out minds in terms of content - or just really do know you audience. After your last one, I swear I thought: “I would really like a video on Rolex Submariner alternatives and dive watches in general, covering many price ranges”… Another excellent one! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great picks overall. I would have swapped an offering from Squale (probably a 1545) over the Rado. The captain cook doesn’t give off any submariner vibes for me. But again, great video.
nice presentation Teddy. you have a gift.
I had the Citizen Promaster in blue (yes, that exact model comes in blue, but not in the U.S.), and it was a lovely watch, but just too big, so I ended up parting with it. But a phenomenal value if it fits you.
Amen…Citizen lume is pretty amazing. And the affordability of a Citizen diver is pretty amazing too.
Grand Seiko?!? Doxa? Bell &Ross? Ulysse Nardin? JLC Polaris Memovox Marine? IWC Aquatimer?!?
I fell in love with the duro 😍
You need to mention the Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 600. Amazing watch.
For 700$ the watch I picked for that classic dive watch vibe is the Yema Pearldiver. A beautiful watch that I wear almost everyday since last April and it survived all my hikes and adventures, from lakes to mountains to extreme cold.
Actually a Gevril in either wall street or chambers .... Swiss watch same quality as rolex And basically identical
Oh that new Omega 300 is stunning in person
So funny looking at the Tudor and how strongly it presents as a little more refined influence from the MKII Kingston watch that long before preceded it.
Hi Teddy, I love watching your videos and really admire your balanced and incisive evaluations. Would have liked to see Longines Hydroconquest somewhere in the list. Somehow Rado doesn't strike that chord. 👍
You can buy whole Casio Marlin range of six watches for about $400. Superb value.
I think it would be fair if you did a video on Rolex submariner hommage watches. There are so many great once out there like San Martin SN004G that looks like the Rolex Submariner 6538.
The 43 mm Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 is such a great watch.
Good review, but now, in September 2022, the new Tudor Pelagos 39 is the one for me, that and the Seiko SPB143.
Hydroconquest..pelagus? Great watches
Paid $300 for mine new in the early 1980's (980.613B). A great looking watch at an affordable price.
Some great pics, don't sleep on Squale
All great Choices, Mido would be my number 1, they are hands down the winner for fit an finish in that price range.
Many watches out there that are just as nice if not nicer ....i went with a TISSOT a year or 2 ago. .. And fell in love with the brand ..but always knew about TISSOT quality ..just didn't pay much attention to them ..being under swatch group ..they have a great movments .
And the name has history .
One obvious alternative and one commonly overlooked option missed out here... The Glycine Combat Sub, and Raymond Weil Freelancer Diver.
Longines Hydrocoquest ceramic comes as obvious choice.
You never go wrong with an Invicta Pro Diver, even though their are a bunch of homages out their and yet some homage watches are sold dirt cheap.
Really nice video, saw some new models that I had not seen or thought of in the past.
I would add to the list;
-Ulysse Nardin Diver marine
-titoni seascoper 600
-pequignet royale 300
-Bremont Supermarine
-Tag Heuer Aquaracer
-Raketa Amphibia
-Helm Khuraburi
-Fortis Marimaster
-Sinn U1
There are some brands which are never mentioned on this channel...Ulysse Nardinis on of them. Chopard...and so on.
Congratulations 👏
I am wearing a Metal Casio Calculator Watch for the past 20 years which works flawlessly!😁
Great topic. I have both a Duro and a Kanno, both epitomise the clean uncluttered style.
Oris aquis 39.5mm black dial and bezel is a perfect alternative below the bb58 price point
I’m a big sucker for black/grey/orange color combo on Tudor
I am glad you didn't choose the Seamaster 300M. It seems to be the only diver people buy from Omega. Maybe it is the price. I think the perfect Omega is the Planet Ocean. I absolutely love Mido as well. Great video as usual.
