Nice to see you guys pushing yourselves out of comfort zone. These jobs make a difference between shops that are willing to learn and improve, and shops that are always doing same stuff. Can't wait on other parts!
Although something different, not something I would even commission to be done. An RS4 has a DSG gearbox for a reason. The older model RS4 is suited for manual gearbox. Not the B8.5 version. Just not the done thing. Aesthetics. Power. Gear changes. Auto gearbox changes quicker than manual. R8 manual B8 is awesome. Done properly. You wouldn’t then turn the V10 auto to a manual, would you? Not a good look. Great TH-cam content as always.
Love the channel. First person that springs to mind is Ricky at RE Performance. He knows a lot about Audi V8 and V10 including deep ECU programming. Good luck!
Hi from the US, I would speak to the Humble Mechanic here on YT ; he did a RS3 engine swap to a VW R32 which involved comparing and modifying the wiring harnesses and coding and Immobilizer etc. He has access to ODIS with his friend Paul at DAP parts. If he can get a mixed bag like that to work, I'm sure he could help with your simple swap. He has a YT video documenting that conversion as well.
Humble Mechanic's swap was actually a MK7.5 Golf R, not an R32. There was a shop in Connecticut that specialized in these swaps, but the owner now works for Equilibrium Tuning.
Great video, as always! One comment though from an owner, who has several cars that are special to me - putting seat and steering wheel cover before getting into the car is a minimum I would expect from a reputable shop in order not to make the car dirty. It's a small detail for you, which is greatly appreciated by owners, in addition to the main thing - getting car fixed/serviced.
I clean my own car and it always is spotless. And I expect that I receive it back from the workshop in the same condition, without additional invoice for 350eur 😂@@VAGTechnic
Ultimately, if the ecu could work with the manual gear box that is perfect. If that is not happening, maybe just let that ecu think the car is in D mode then you could have full power. But there have to be a switch for the owner to switch between D and P (because the car is not able to be lock in D). I saw people did that with another auto car which doesn’t have manual variant. Thanks for interesting contents so long as a b9 owner.
If you can get your hands on a V8 stick Audi R8 from 2014/2015 era that could be helpful in resolving this in terms of software files. Also you are likely dealing with two ECU's. Maybe APR tuning out of the US could figure this one out? They do ECU tunes on the EA824 FSI motors up and down the range of the variants.
You could talk to humble mechanic or with the guys from Mighty car mods. They did a full engine swap on a polo , making it the only polo Gti in Australia and they had a tehnician who made all sorts of changes on the different modules of the car.
Hey you should look into 4.0 tt swaps people are doing into older chassis. I believe they use the same med17 ecu and people know some trick to make them run with a manual. They usually use stock ecu with DS1 but not sure if thats for tuning only or necessary for manual trans.
If you took this project on to educate your subscribers, thank you and well done. If you took it on to make money and not know that this would be a nightmare, you must be nuts 😂 Good luck, I think you’re going to need it. Can’t wait for the outcome. Thank you.
if you contact the owner of ignition tube TH-cam channel in the US, he did the manual swap with that chassis and I'm sure he would be happy to point you in the right direction.
Many thanks for the compliment, but these guys are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible! Mine was fairly straightforward, and I have to defer my competency to my buddy Matt who helped me through the entire process.
After watching this segment, all that I can think about is how much better off I am with my B8 S4 6-speed Avant. I suspect that if Frederick wanted more performance from a manual B8 or similar this might have been the more practical jumping off point.
You will most definately need a map with custom code, I have never looked at this particular swap and what's needed to make it run as an OEM car - but my first thought is to patch in related functions from a different MED17 software which has the support for manual gearbox aswell😊 This sparked my interest for sure, I've done many softwares with custom coding for swaps etc before - lmk if you still need help with this👍
I think you can use can hack tools, to made some external module, that can emulate info about selector position to ECU. And some other parameters such torque from DSG, temps, etc.
All you have to do is tune the car! Basically retune the car with the manual transmission. The stock tune has a transmission tune as well. It’s actually very simple being the transmission is manual now.
@VAG Technic One of the options is to get ECU from manual S4/S5 and assemble it that way. It would definitely need a tune but those versions did actually have manual as an option, other than that, standalone ECU or tune from scratch :/ .
@@jabberwockytdi8901 Different ESP sensors, different steering column stalk, possibly ABS pump(bc of ESP), newer abs pumps "can" be made so they are standalone-bc of esp(I have heard of only two cars with this). A stand alone would be the "easy" way to solve these problems. It's the solution when a car doesn't have the ability to do what you want it to do. I'd be interested what others can do for you with programming the stock ECU. Good luck!
Absolutely excellent and interesting video :) Do you guys sell merch at all - my son has been pestering me to ask you for months as he wants a VAG T-shirt or hoodie :)?
Hv you guys considered making a suitable ‘dolly’ to fit in place of the front subframe so you can get vehicles off the ramp and out of the workshop while waiting on parts etc
I was running through all the signal inputs from an auto into the bus versus next to nothing from a manual while the engine was coming out. My way to work would be to get the two wiring diagrams and make the wiring changes before installation, but I cannot escape the liklihodd of using an ECU from a manual V8 car to ease the process. I eagerly await the outcome (and total cost) of this project.
So the day is giving speed sensor and you need that signal from wheel speed sensor instead The park neutral switch is just an input output signal which could be converted to ignition switch or something like that to let ecu gets signal
so just a thought I had and not sure if it would work but what if you code all the important modules like the ECM and gauge cluster and whatever else is necessary to make it happy to think it is an S5 with a manual then have ECM tuned for that engine. so I know you changed the coding so it is manual but so many of the modules are connected maybe the whole car needs to think it's an S5 with a higher performance engine. just a thought, don't know if it would help, just putting it out there. and I hope it all works out.
37:50 problem is in communication between engine and gearbox computer, maybe you should put computers from audi with 6 speed manual gearbox and install tune from v8 engine computer, or it should look like you swapped engine in audi with manual gearbox
Possible issues I can think of are Speed sensor for the Speedo? Does it come off the Canbus? I know on C5 RS6 manual swaps everyone ends up with TPMS & Antilock faults. They need something beyond a regular performance tune with someone knowledgable enough to do the special tune. Maybe MRC? I think the mechanical part will be fairly straight forward since their were S4/S5 manuals. Some wiring changes due to the two switches on the clutch assembly so things like the Cruise control will work properly and disengage when the clutch is pressed, etc....
@@VAGTechnic You'll have to get into the wiring schematics. I don't have the A4 schematic to look at but it's probably close or the same as the A5. In the A5/S5/RS5 it is the big unit with multiple plugs in the right rear cubby hole in the boot. Doing the wiring is the most time consuming. I know there is a couple of cars in the States that have been done.
