I was 10 when this came on British tv on BBC1. I didn’t know anything about about Stephen King or Salems lot, until I watched it, Ralphie Glick at the window, Danny Glick in the coffin, Margery Glick in the morgue, Mike Ryerson in the rocking chair, and Kurt Barlow. Was the stuff of freakin nightmares.
As much as the window scenes were so epic, my favorite scenes were Mike opening the coffin revealing the fire eyed Danny. And Mike hissing, "Loooook at meeee!" ❤
38 years ago(1987) I first saw SL this day(October 31st 1987) on tv in the UK! instant crush on the late great actor lance kerwin who played mark! can't beleive 38 years have passed I remember it like it was yesterday!
Watched the miniseries when it first aired back in the 70's and it was a stunner. Still give it a rewatch every so often and it still works. Absolute classic and yes the Ralphie window scene was, is and forever will be the stuff of nightmares!
Hello from Ireland, great to hear Ron talk about the movie, the window scene is one of the most iconic horror scenes in movie history , scared the crap out of everyone all over the world
Hi, from Northen Ireland. I've only discovered this intervuew today and i would like to add how great it was to hear from Ron. Salems Lot frightened a generation in a good way back then. Its burned into our minds for life. It still stands up to this daydue to its quality. The entire cast, production and score were amazing. One of the very beat and its great to listen to these reflective stories of its production. Especially the famous window scene. My friends and i still quite the dialogue and mention the film to this day and will continue to do so.
This mini series is 45 years old and made for TV and we are still discussing it! Just goes to show how great it still is and still serves as a basis for what modern horror movies "should" follow, unfortunately they don't.
Salem's lot 1979 will always be the scariest vampire movie/miniseries i've ever seen. This is a great interview.First time i've heard Ralphie Glick talk since Salem's lot.
This is my favorite vampire movie of all time. I remember watching this for the first time when I was 6 yrs old in 1985, it creeped out then and it still does now. This movie is a masterpiece. Is amazing how they did this movie's special effect without the technology they have now.
I saw Salem's Lot in 7th grade - Ron Scribner affected my life as for 4 months after this film I was dreaming of flying boys in pajamas coming into my window at night to give me hickeys. What is really weird as there were a couple of times it looked like I had a small bite mark on my neck. These were not nightmares but there was a element too them that were kind of spooky. Any way, loved this memory and the interview. So happy to hear Ron is doing well - Thanks for the memories!
I remember watching this when I was about 10. I did ok through part 1, where Danny sat up in the coffin and bit Mike. By the time part 2 aired we were visiting my grandparents, probably for Thanksgiving. I don’t recall Ralphie bothering me too badly, but early in part 2, when Danny was scratching at the window my parents noticed it was freaking me out. They changed the channel and told me to head to bed. It was a windy night, and here I am in the dark hearing the tips of some branches…scratching at the window! My dad spent the night in the room with me…not a good night!😂
At 12:11, the scene inside the small room where all the vampires were sleeping, I identified Mike Ryerson, Ned Tebbets, and Majorie Glick but the fourth one, it is Weasel? Although, this scene was shown on screen, it was very dark in there and moved very quickly. I also remember seeing Danny Glick in there as well but the other vampire is the first time I have seen it in photo. That is a rare photo indeed. I have searched the internet for years trying to identify all the vampires that was in the room but never came up with a photo until this video.
Great interview!!! My husband was a manager at JC Penny's and worked nights so I'm home alone watching Salem's Lot and right at the scene (which is already intense) the boy is tapping at Lance's window when I hear what sounds like tapping outside my window at the same time, I was scared out of my mind...it took me serveral minutes to compose myself and realize it was raining outside....
Thank you for making this. Upon hearing of David Soul's death, I've been rewatching his shows and movies. I never cared for horror, especially vampire movies, but this one I did. It was full of a timeless cast and suspense. I typed in David Soul and "Everything 101" came up first. Thank you, Danny and thank you, Ron.
You're so welcome. I am honored Ron, Julie and Lance took the time to chat with me. You may also want to check out Boogeyman Ben's channel. He does a lot of Salem's Lot content.
I just found out Lance Kerwin passed. So sad. RIP Lance. He was epic in that movie along with Ronnie and the rest of the cast. It would've been really nice you guys go watching the new movie together. Just be you and Ronnie now. You should defo make it happen and please do a review. I remember seeing the window scene when I was a kid and remember feeling my heart pounding out of my chest in fear. Still creeps me out that scene especially when Ralphie returns at the hospital window looking more menacing. Awesome interview. Thankyou.
I watched 'Salem's Lot' when it originally aired, I was seven years old and to this day I'm emotionally scarred by that moment when the fiendish face of Barlow popped up into frame in the jail! He scared me on a level that made my blood run cold lol.
Still erie. The billowing mist, totally scary still. I watched this again recently on blu ray and it's still such a well executed film on the whole, better than many other adaptations of kings books at the time. It was so unexpected to my generation when part one was aired. Those who were unfamiliar with the book went to school the next day and talked about buying crosses to put under their pillows. No one has bothered to do another adaptation of this book because, like Hitchcock's Psycho its pointless to try and top it. No point in bringing 'up to date' because it's gothic of the time. Thanks for the memories Ron (i think)
I saw this first broadcast in '79. I was 10. Mike in the rocking chair..."Teacher...loooook at me!" , Marjorie rising from beneath the sheet..."Danny, where are you Danny?" and most of all Barlow's appearance in Ned's cell...I was mortified. Love the film, in high school I used to love seeing this programmed on a Sunday afternoon as I knew it would be hours of entertainment. I watch the Blu Ray every year in October. Great interview!
I watched this film in 1985 when I was 9 years old. I had nightmares every single night for 3 weeks after. I watched again recently and it still gave me a chill. Pure masterclass in film making.
Just discovered this interview. Thank you for uploading! So interesting. Couldn't have the curtains open at night for MONTHS after watching this film. Epic.
I also saw the original airing of Salem's Lot in November of 1979 when I was 9 years old. I was in my stylish 70's pajamas (not too different from the type Ralphie Glick wore floating at the window) and will never forget my first time watch this film. Barlow is still the scariest vampire of all time as far as I am concerned. My parents were unaware how intense this would be as they assumed it was another campy TV movie. Not for this one - a true Hollywood-level horror movie quality effort adapted for TV. I was horrified but captivated at the same time. Slept with my light on for like two weeks after. Years later when I found out the Barlow look was based on the original "Nosferatu" I learned that audience of this 1922 silent film classic were also horrified. Tobe Hooper definitely knew how to build the tension just like Hitchcock or even Steven Spielberg in "Jaws" for sure - and I always wanted to see more of Barlow, but just like Hitchcock, the less you show can make it even more terrifying to your imagination. Just watch the Ned Tebbets jail scene where you get the first brief but terrifying glimpse of Barlow. And yes a visit to Ferndale CA to see the original film locations is on my bucket list too. Here is another great fan site resource for this film > Salem's Lot Then and Now: sites.google.com/a/blowupthenandnow.com/salem-s-lot-then-now/
Ralphie Glick said something very interesting in this interview, in the classical horror movies of 70 the music petrified than the blood!!! Absolutely true!!!, in fact in my personal opinion the soundtrack of the mini serie movie of Salem lot 1979, was a masterpiece!!! It was absolutely terrifing!!!!
@Everything-hw4jb I want to be in contact personally with if is possible!!! Tell me if you have interest!!! Thanks!!! In found your interviews very interesting!!!
Some years ago I was listening a interview with Alain Delon and he said something very interesting about the movie and the music, for him the music is the dress of the movie and in the horror movies is everything!!! in fact is the most important!!
This was absolutely incredible Danny. Ron is the best. What a great guy. You did absolutely a fantastic job on this interview. I was shocked when he brought me up. I am totally down to see the new film with you all when it drops September 9th. That would be mind blowing awesomeness right there
Oh it's you I've got to thank for making me terrified of the fog .I am now 63 and I will never forget that scene it will stay on my mind forever. Stephen king must be doing something right because I am scared of clowns as well .
Always cool to learn new facts about the making of the iconic "Salem's Lot". Ron certainly comes across as a humble, good natured guy. Very informative and entertaining interview, thanks for posting!
The scene that literally scared me off the couch and into the floor was when Geoffrey Lewis (Mike Ryerson) jumped down into the grave of Danny Glick and opened up the coffin. When Danny raised up, I jumped so hard that I catapulted off the couch into the floor. Amazing movie!
Agreed. That entire scene when he was at the cemetary alone, dark was closing in and he is absolutely mesmerized, spellbound by that coffin in that pit. Once it got ahold of him psychologically? Game over! To me, it was one of the few scenes that truly captured the way Stephen King portrayed it in the novel. You could almost FEEL the grip the vampire Barstow had on that character.
Wow!! You weren’t afraid to interview Ralphie Glick!?? Lol that scene had me sleeping with my lights on for a YEAR!! Lol. Great interview. He seems like a cool guy. Great job! 👍
The scene at the cemetery kept me awake nights on end. Being brought up a Catholic, I had a crucifix by my night side table. The one with the rocking chair is also a highlight. Great interview.
This was like a late Christmas present! So, so great to view and post this Danny. Sure seems like Ron is totally down to earth and probably just can't believe there's still such a buzz to this day about this fantastic film. 5 stars!! I'll be in touch
Thank you so much! I'm so happy I can bring something that's like a gift to you. Ron is so cool and down to earth and I'm just honored to have been able to talk with him.
Massive fan of Salem’s Lot !! Scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I must have been 5 or 6 when I first saw it on TV in 79’ or perhaps 80’ here in Belfast, Ireland. The only other films to scare me like that was John Carpenter’s original Halloween and the sequel Halloween ll. My love for horror began with the likes of Salem’s Lot, Halloween, Amityville Horror and The Omen all around the early 80’s as a young boy. Great episode - I’ll share it with other like minded folks 😉👍
I watched this film when i was around 10 in 1984 i was to scared to sleep on my own again!! Im living in Wales in the UK and there's a place called Ferndale only couple of miles away 😮
He was spot on here. The music and sound effects make or break a horror. That window scene was scary because you had suspense build up with the rolling fog at the window then seeing Ralphie arrive slowly looking very creepy and that with the music build up and sound effects made it very effective in creeping you out. Makeup is the last part of the magic ingredients
Love this film! I saw it when it first aired. I must have been like 7 years old at the time. Ron is right. The MUSIC, especially during the window scenes were especially terrifying. P.S. Thanks Ron for the decades of nightmares and your unforgettable performance!
I saw Salem's lot when I was 6 yrs old. It scared me to death. I had nightmares of Ralphie and his brother scratching at my bedroom window! Great interview 💯
@Everything 101 Thank you for asking my question to Ron. You made my day to hear you say my name to him and of course him answering. Thank you! So thrilled.
It frightened all of us, I was 10 when I first saw Salem's Lot. Brad Savage had the same effect on me I couldn't sleep that night. Great interview I wish it was a video chat so we can see how he looks today
@@DannyEverything101 it fucked me up bad! Lol I still have those certain vampires burnt into my brain and still dream about them every once in awhile! Lol
After me and my family watched Salem's Lot my older brother used to regularly scratch on my bedroom door whispering, "Let me in Ian, let me in". It traumatized and mentally scarred me. My brother just thought it was hilarious 😂😂
@@DannyEverything101 No thank YOU for the video and interview! Listened to it again tonight. I had no doubt that Lew Ayers was nothing but a gentleman. I miss Lew, lovely man and a fantastic actor.
Absolutely stellar interview with him.. I wish you could put the address down that we could mail him a picture to sign. I would cherish that autograph. Again thank you so much for posting this
I can't remember which came first, the book or the movie, but both scared the shit out of me. Had it not been for David Soul, I don't know if I would have watched the movie, but I'm so glad I did. They did an epic job with Barlow. I did a sketch of him for art class in high school and I couldn't believe just how close I came to the character. He was crazy scary af!!!!
@@DannyEverything101 I know, right??? As my old memory returns, I have to laugh at myself. Of course the book came first. After all, we're talking about Stephen King here. I can't imagine what his IQ is, all of his books he has authored, wow! David was AWESOME!
@@richardr3511 I have GOT to find that book again. It's somewhere in my house. I should have corrected myself because I know the book came out first, my brain wasn't turned on that day. Never have I seen a better vampire than Barlow. Fright Night came out a long time ago as well, and while some of it was stupid, it was still ok.
@@survivrs I loved fright night (the original). I tried reading Salem's Lot a long time ago but could never stay focused, not because it's boring it's just super long and detailed. The new movie coming out next year is probably going to suck because the run time is too short. Even the 1979 version didn't include all the characters but it's my favorite. The TNT 2004 mini series had good actors especially Rutger Hauer and Donald Sutherland but was way too satirical. I remember the trailer for that one and their cool playable like website that I wish I could have saved somehow, but sadly the movie was disappointing.
Danny that was a GREAT! interview with Ron Scribner. Ron gave some great insights in the making of this film, especially the molded cast they had to take of his body in order to create something to enable them to hang him from a crane. I remember watching Salem's Lot when I was in my teens, scary as He**. I personally feel it was the best Vampire Movie ever done, I don't think any remake of this movie will top the original, from my own personal experience most remakes of movies are never as good or better than the original, very few are. Ron Scribner was a very good actor as a child through his teen years, I remember seeing him in episodes on several television series; Chip's, Little House on the Prairie and Fantasy Island all of which I still watch today. I hope you can do another interview with him on some other films he did, he is very informative and good at it. It would be great to get an autographed photo of Salem's Lot by Ron although I don't know exactly how to go about doing it since I have never done it before, any insight you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated.
Will never forget seeing this as a kid in the uk 🇬🇧 i was staying at a friend's house and we where so terrified after...when we went to bed we made some cardboard crucifix and sellotaped them to the bedroom window 😂 great times.
This TV series was shown in Puerto Rico when I was 8, a few months after it was shown in the US. Believe me when I tell you, it was just as terrifying dubbed in Spanish lol. Glass windows were not that common in PR at the time, however a few years after I moved to the US and couldn't sleep in any room that had glass windows similar to the ones in this movie for years LOL.
I adore the '79 series, it takes the time to introduce the townsfolk and their various inter-relationships, the acting is top notch, and the atmosphere of slow palpable dread is unsurpassed in any other vampire film. Not enough tedious jumpscares and too much build up for people's short attention spans nowadays unfortunately. I just feel so sad that we have lost so many of those fine actors now, especially with the recent deaths of the two 'survivors' of the story David and Lance. Ron sounds such a genuine, intelligent and sweet guy. 'I'm fat and bald and old, of course I look mean!'. Well Mr Scribner, you may describe yourself so but you were the most photogenic little vampire to ever grace the screen, and that's counting Eddie Munster!
Vampire Ralphie Glick is able to speak as well as anyone but he chooses not to because speaking is not his style. Ralphie has hypnotic and psychic mind control abilities that he clearly delights in using on his victims. If he appeared floating outside your window my guess is you'd see him not as the abomination he clearly is but as a beautiful child. You'd probably let him in and let him feed on you. The fact that he doesn't talk just makes him that much more creepy.
Wow this was awesome Danny. And thanks for mentioning me as the first "question-asker" lol..Thank you for doing this and if I can swing I am meeting you, Ron and Ben out there in September!
I always thought that the scenes of Danny Glick as a vampire were much more creepy!...Any plans on doing an interview with the actor who portrayed Danny ??
I was in Ferndale in June w my little brother, life long tricksters. We had some fun w Salems Lot fans, thx to the air bnb guy for letting us borrow the ladder, I love hearing grown men scream like that. Second floor hotel rooms aren’t safe w me around haha.
The scene with Ralph as a vampire at Danny's bedroom window was not in the novel. My understanding is that in the novel, Ralph was murdered by Straker as some kind of satanic sacrifice so Barlow could enter Salem's Lot.
Always cool to learn new facts about the making of the iconic "Salem's Lot". Ron certainly comes across as a humble, good natured guy. Very informative and entertaining interview, thanks for posting!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it.
Geoffrey's scenes were amazing. Yes, Danny scared me to death as well!
Great movie, scared shit out of us all as kids. Good times, great stuff, thanks for posting.
Wow!! You weren’t afraid to interview Ralphie Glick!?? Lol that scene had me sleeping with my lights on for a YEAR!! Lol. Great interview. He seems like a cool guy. Great job! 👍
Thanks! I was SO honored to interview him. He kept me awake many nights as well.
The scene at the cemetery kept me awake nights on end. Being brought up a Catholic, I had a crucifix by my night side table. The one with the rocking chair is also a highlight. Great interview.
The jail scene is what scared me the most
I can absolutely see that. The only jump scare in the whole movie.
LOVED HOW IT CAME ABOUT HIM AND HIS GIRLFRIEND,SUCH A NICE BLOKE !💖👍🙏🙏🙏😂
That was an amazing story!
@@DannyEverything101 FACTS BRO 💖💖
Great interview, Ron seems like a genuinely good guy as well as a great storyteller.
Thanks. He really is a great guy!
9:30 That must've been some unforgettable studio tour.
Thank you so much for sharing. I think so many people relate to your story. This movie began a love of horror for so many people.
I COULDN'T SLEEP FOR YEARS 😢😂😂😂
Right there with you.
I watched this film when i was around 10 in 1984 i was to scared to sleep on my own again!! Im living in Wales in the UK and there's a place called Ferndale only couple of miles away 😮
You need to come to the Ferndale in California some time!
You're absolutely right!
Love this film! I saw it when it first aired. I must have been like 7 years old at the time. Ron is right. The MUSIC, especially during the window scenes were especially terrifying. P.S. Thanks Ron for the decades of nightmares and your unforgettable performance!
The music is absolutely genius. The scene was scary but the music just sent it over the top.
Salem's Lot, Dracula and Thirst, all in 1979, bitingly great year for vampire flicks!
Excellent interview..Ron is a great guy..wish you could get others to interview as well that would be awesome
Thank you! Ron really is awesome! I am so lucky he did this interview for me.
I saw Salem's lot when I was 6 yrs old. It scared me to death. I had nightmares of Ralphie and his brother scratching at my bedroom window! Great interview 💯
Brilliant interview Ron you are a legend
Thank you! Yes, he is a legend.
Great interview! Really nice to hear from Ron. I remember him well from a Little House on the Prairie episode and Salem's Lot of course.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed this interview! Thanks!
Thank you!
Amazing! I hope you can persuade some other surviving Salems Lot actors to do interviews!
Thank you! I think it's worth a try.
@@DannyEverything101 yes! David Soul
Or Bonnie Bodelia
I went to school with his sister in the late 70’s. She was also an actress. I never met him. ❤️❤️ Salem’s Lot
Wow, that is so cool.
@Everything 101 Thank you for asking my question to Ron. You made my day to hear you say my name to him and of course him answering. Thank you! So thrilled.
So happy to do it. I'm happy the interview worked out.
It frightened all of us, I was 10 when I first saw Salem's Lot. Brad Savage had the same effect on me I couldn't sleep that night. Great interview I wish it was a video chat so we can see how he looks today
Thanks! Yes, Brad was incredibly scary as well.
Cool interview! I saw Salem's Lot at 6 years old, slept with a cross for a few years..lol my favorite horror film and book ever!
Wow, I can't imagine being 6 and watching it. I was scared enough at 8.
My brother liked to do things like that as well. It wasn't funny at the time.
Wonderful interview! I loved Salems Lot and enjoyed listening to “Ralphie”.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Incredible interview! The filming in reverse still confuses me lol. Salem's Lot is the best vampire movie ever made.
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
@@DannyEverything101 No thank YOU for the video and interview! Listened to it again tonight. I had no doubt that Lew Ayers was nothing but a gentleman. I miss Lew, lovely man and a fantastic actor.
@@outpost31737 That is my exact impression of him as well.
I agree. It sucked me in in November 1979. I watch and rewatch it. Love the atmosphere.
Great guy! Thx for this nice interview
Glad you liked it. Such a privilege for me.
Absolutely stellar interview with him.. I wish you could put the address down that we could mail him a picture to sign. I would cherish that autograph. Again thank you so much for posting this
Hey, send me an email everything101class@gmail.com and I'll get you the address.
That is so cool! David Soul really did a great job of portraying the character from the book.
@@DannyEverything101 I know, right??? As my old memory returns, I have to laugh at myself. Of course the book came first. After all, we're talking about Stephen King here. I can't imagine what his IQ is, all of his books he has authored, wow! David was AWESOME!
The book came out 4 years before the movie.
I remember the trailer for that one and their cool playable like website that I wish I could have saved somehow, but sadly the movie was disappointing.
great interview thankyou
Thank you so much Dale! I agree with everything you said. Send me an email at danny_evans@bellsouth.net and I'll get you the information you need.
Great interview
Thanks!
Will never forget seeing this as a kid in the uk 🇬🇧 i was staying at a friend's house and we where so terrified after...when we went to bed we made some cardboard crucifix and sellotaped them to the bedroom window 😂 great times.
i love you Ralpie Glick
Me too.
Ime a massive fan of Salem’s lot thought I was the only one throughly enjoyed this 😍Danny glick at the window petrified me for years😳
Me too! The whole thing kicked my tail.
I remember seeing this on TV in 1979 when I was 12 years old.
Did it terrify you like it did me?
scariest thing ever !!! he's a legend ❤
What I don't understand about this story is, how come Barlow was able to enter Mark Petrie''s house and kill his parents if he wasn't invited in?
Good question.
I don't think that rule applied in that particular universe of Vampires.
That is so funny, but I can't relate 100%.
You are so right. It makes it more creepy.
Wow this was awesome Danny. And thanks for mentioning me as the first "question-asker" lol..Thank you for doing this and if I can swing I am meeting you, Ron and Ben out there in September!
Thanks for sending all the great questions!!
Lance Kerwin interview is misssing. He had many scenes in the film. He must have plenty of memories to share as well.
I'm working on interviewing Lance now. Hopefully we'll get it done soon.
@@DannyEverything101 That would be so enjoyable and breathtaking! I am dying to see it....Thanks so much.!
@@DannyEverything101So glad you did. Lance’s interview was heartbreaking. RIP.
I always thought that the scenes of Danny Glick as a vampire were much more creepy!...Any plans on doing an interview with the actor who portrayed Danny ??
I messaged him but didn't hear anything back from him. I assumed he's not interested.
Danny in the coffin before he sits up is something that sticks in the mind 😳
Lance Kerwin had many scenes in the film. He must have plenty of memories to share.
I think he will!
one of my first crushes.
The two window scenes still scare the sh** out of me.
Yes! Very well done.
A classic. Had no idea Superman was inspired by the harness. Thank you.
I didn't realize that either.
great stuff
Thank you!
Yup That Scene Scared the Shit out of Me.. Made me sleep with My Back to My Bedroom Window for along time.. But Great Film Overall.
I was the same way. I couldn't look at the window.
Spoke to Ron many times on fb great guy excellent interview 👏🏻
Thank you. He's a great guy.
If you only remember one thing from this movie, you remember that kid floating outside the window.
Definitely!
And also the both windows scene of the movie with the children were other materpiece too!!! Tobe Hooper the director was a genius!!!!
He absolutely was a genius!
I was in Ferndale in June w my little brother, life long tricksters. We had some fun w Salems Lot fans, thx to the air bnb guy for letting us borrow the ladder, I love hearing grown men scream like that. Second floor hotel rooms aren’t safe w me around haha.
great interview nice guy (:
Yes, great guy!
The scene with Ralph as a vampire at Danny's bedroom window was not in the novel. My understanding is that in the novel, Ralph was murdered by Straker as some kind of satanic sacrifice so Barlow could enter Salem's Lot.
That's exactly right. Ralphie was just killed in the novel. Not sure why they changed it for this version, but it sure came out really well!
Love the movie👍
Me too! Hope you like the interview.
