One more thing I love about this scene: Usually when Data starts his detailed observations of human behavior, someone cuts him off and says "Yes thank you Data that's enough", but Q just listens to him patiently like "you don't say"
He is literally learning everything about being human at once. Most others already know the things Data is telling them ( or a dumbed down version ) but Q doesn’t!
It also happens to be that Q would be just about the only character in the series that knows more intellectually than Data, which makes it even more interesting that he would have to learn from Data about 'being mortal', one of the only things Q does not understand.
They each can help each other with their own experience with humans and other races. One on a more broader, centuries view, and the other with more of a day to day view. Would be a good growth. Q would eventually see that it is more than a collection of wars and self destruction, and Data would see that just by living, contributing on some scale (either by an insignificant, a great significant, or not at all) he is as much 'human' as his crew mates and companions.
I thought the punishment was being mortal and being stuck with a plethora of biological requirements. Q can’t enjoy being human without his body acting up or suddenly feeling pain

My money is officers and corpsmen join star fleet for Adventure and majority compete for low skill jobs under the reaaoning being that being a janitor or bartender on earth is boring, but on a star ship it's exciting!

How did TNG manage to get so many outstanding actors and characters in one show? The show is timeless, not many late 80s/early 90s shows are still watchable and relevant today, especially SciFi ones.

(Another 90's sitcom.) The 90s were interesting because they were removed enough from the overt race problems of the 60-70s by enough generations, but still before the current woke period. Some of the best shows were from the period between 1990 and 2010.

Beat's the hell out of working around a hot kitchen using sharp knives next to ovens, grills and a deep fryer , then having to scrape and wash pots, pans and dishs for hours! The wait staff could possibly be hard line forms projected like the holodeck characters if needed .
I mean being a bartender is a pretty social job. The Enterprise has a high civilian presence, is constantly moving around the galaxy and has all sorts of visitors coming aboard. Probably hears all sorts of stories and meets lots of interesting people. Like here, she’s giving a God ten chocolate sundaes. If the idea is that humans have evolved past the need for money and now just work to better their fellow man and to do what they love, there are certainly worse positions to be in.
These interactions between Q and Data are some of my all time favourites in all of Trek. They are two of my favourite characters. Q is brilliant but his power has warped his sense of morality over time and Data who is also brilliant is able to refocus Q and help him become a better person/omnipotent being The end of the episode where Q gives Data the gift of laughter is heartwarming.

They can take the form of humans but rarely experience the nature of that existence. Seems like he's been more focused on learning behavioral patterns, history, theology, creativity, etc. I always found it curious how he was well versed in human authors.
Q a nigh on omnipotent being(s) that presumably have experienced eveything there is to experience, either has forgotten or really doesn't know one of the most basic primordial sensations that is taste. I like to think this simply chalked up to Q's choosing to completely forget experiences so as to experience them all over again while still retaining their omnipotence in the background. It would be something I would do if I was immortal and had the power to do so, because boredom would be an existantial hell.
Do we truly understand ourselves? There are so many things we take for granted. Data displays a fascination with every single thing we do. Humans get annoyed when he over explains because they “get the point mr data.” But Q is like a baby, he needs the basics, and nobody else is patient enough to put up with him. We see that with Beverly, she just mocks him by telling him he’s probably hungry. Data explains his thesis on emotional affects of digestion. For all their talk of better understanding others and themselves, the federation officers often are full of presumption, and can’t be bothered to really ask why, when looking at themselves.
Good thing Data didn't have an emotion chip yet. Imagine the frustration he'd feel having this putz get exactly what Data has been trying to achieve and COMPLAINING about it.
Think about this: Dr. Crusher hears about it and thinks: Oh no, like a child, and soon he will need me again - … oh my stomach … and the chocolate sundaes have come back … 😂

Q and Data probably have more in common than they realise. They're usually the smartest person in the room, for example.
Same in 'The Neutral Zone' S1E24. Data is the only guy who treats the three stranded people well.
