    I love this scene so much. In showing up the smarmy pick-up artist, Riker demonstrates in word and deed what real masculinity looks like: where some guys would rage and turn physically violent, or try to show off their power and dominance in some way, Riker just calmly flips the script on the guy: instead of being provoked into violence or foolishness, he shows the true depth of his feelings for Deanna by stating that what he wants is for her to be happy, and he shows the depth of his *respect* for her by pointing out that she could make Ral a better person. Ral, who doesn't think in terms of values but in terms of winners and losers, is left speechless. Riker wins by not playing.

      Real masculinity? Oh, gimme a break. Can't people stop proseletyzing on what masculinity is or isn't, or should be. Just let people be themselves rather than lecturing them on some either politically warped (the left) or old fashioned (the right) or religiously mandated (the loony) ideal. "Real masculinity" is whatever the hell men like, just as 'real femininity' is however women like to be. It's an individual choice. So all of you get off your damn pulpits and stop sermonizing to everyone else. Instead might want to ask why you feel such a driving desire to sermonize in the first place.

    This is a good mindset to have in life and a great way in dealing with overly competitive people. People who think everything's a competition that needs to be dominated and conquered. He insults Riker that he's only second incommand and that he will take Deana too. Riker flips the frame of competition and makes it about value adding. He genuinely doesn't mind if him or Troi are happy together because it would be value adding for the both them. He's know that serving as second incomand to Picard brings more value to the crew with added benefits to the federation rather than pining for Command now just to satisfy his own ego and pride. If everyone behave like this the world would be a better place ...

    • @ematuskey
      @ematuskey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Hell, by this point Riker was second in command because /he wanted to be/--I think he'd already passed up at least one offer of command by now. Same thing with Deanna--Riker made a deliberate choice, knowing what he was giving up. That was two bad reads Ral made--easy mistakes from someone without any long term vision.

    • @AaronSmith-kr5yf
      @AaronSmith-kr5yf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@ematuskey Riker wanted to be on the Enterprise more than having his own command. Think about it, the Enterprise is the Federation's flagship. Whatever is out there, they are going to be the first ones to find it. Sounds like being 1st officer on the Enterprise is a much more prestigious and interesting place to be, rather than on some heavy cruiser patrolling the Cardassian or Romulan border. After the events of "Best of Both Worlds" though, I'm sure Starfleet offered him a command on a long range exploration mission on a similar Galaxy class ship, or hell command of his choosing. The fact he didn't take it says more about the show-runners need to keep continuity in an episodic format more than anything.

The relationship between Troi and Riker is astounding and really does show how evolved their culture is...the pettiness of love and relationships today is below him. She's something far deeper to Riker than just a simplistic title. They give each other space to breath and the space to grow into individuals who are far stronger than they were when they dated. When Ral mentions his love for her being different, he's right. Riker loves her and respects her enough to give her the dignity of managing her own love life and not beating his chest like a fool over her. If Ral didn't bring up Deanna, I think Riker might've fallen for the provocations. Bringing up Deanna however, made Riker see how ludicrous Ral's taunts were. The idea that his glib could fool her into being "his", as if she wasn't intelligent, principled and mature enough to see through him, gave Riker the break he needed to take a step back and laugh at the whole thing. Riker's respect for Deanna was stronger than his ego. Ral's wasn't. That's why Ral lost.
