- We show you exactly how to remove the spark plugs in a MK4 Golf without removing the intake manifold, which saves you tons of time. Please enjoy!!!
We would like to give a major shoutout to Joakim Karud for allowing us to use the music featured our video! Check him out here:

Thanks very much for posting this video. Always nice to see people blazing trails doing these jobs before we have to.
Thank you! So much easier/faster than disassembling the entire intake! I had to use a 1/4in drive wobble on the #2 to get the socket seated, and to start the new plug without cross threading. (I, for some reason, could not find my universal) A LONG extension and an offset ratchet helped for keeping the knuckles with skin on them. I needed my big extendable handle to loosen the plugs due to them being in there for a "hundred" yrs. I just bought this New Beetle 3 yrs ago. Had the timing belt and water pump done right away. Last Thursday I got a misfire on cyl #1. on the way to work, I barely made it! Changed that plug, that evening, and changed the last 3 today. 169,000 miles on it. I think these old plugs might have been in there from the get-go. They were worn down to the nubs and had no points left on the electrodes. They were rusted in too. Thankfully there was no fouling at all. Just a very small amount of carbon coating. VERY small. Thank you again for your help!!! You saved me BIG $$ because all the mechs wanted to tear down the intake to make the job harder and more expensive!
I just did this. Was able to get all plugs with just an extension, no swivel needed.
Getting new wires in without removing manifold was like a puzzle. A little patience and logic needed. But overall not bad.
Used a pair of kitchen tongs to pull the spark plugs.
Currently using this video as well as your one for the coil replacement. It's -10C outside and snowy and I am doing it in my driveway, my only tools a set of bike allen keys and a socket with multiple extensions. I am currently on removing my final spark plug, I think number three (the most hidden one) and was able to get the socket on my going up and underneath the pipey thing at the bottom. I do have very small hands so it's helpful for getting the socket in, but I just bring it up because I didn't have channel locks so didn't use them. Anyway, your video gave me hope that I could actually do this. I've only ever changed my car headlight before but couldn't afford the $1200 (canadian) quote I got from my mechanic that I trust so am trying this! Okay now I am warm enough--let's see if this works!
Oh also mine is a 2007 VW city golf, exact same set up for anyone who needs that too.
Great video. Thanks for showing that you don't need the special tool to take the boot out, saved me some money
Nice one! But You should really have not forgotten to show Us Plebs the firing order during the plug wire installation ( re 1-2-3-4 corresponding to the ignition box ( distributor cap) plug ends ) .HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Is your orientation 1-2-3-4 to the coil pack starting at D for 4 and so forth? I'm asking cause I believe my firing order is the same instead of being 1342 or something like that
Really great video. Any way you could list the tools used (or tools recommended) for the job?
I used channel locks to pull the boots off. 5/8 spark plug socket, 2 extensions 1 long 1 short. A long wobble extension. An extendable handle 3/8 drive ratchet. Needle nose pliers to fish out dropped plugs and sockets, and to aim the boots back on. A long screw driver to help get the injector electrical plugs off. A flash light aimed through the space between the intake tubes. A 1/4 in drive tiny ratchet with a 10mm socket to get the engine cover nut off.
Does this help?
Great video! I have one of these! This Mk4 engine looks pretty solid! Do you remember the mileage of this golf?
Solid due to being about as simple as you can get without using a carburetor. 8 valve SOHC and as gutless as a 2.0l could be.
@@SaurianSoulIts a Daily drive car. And it does that great.
Shit for tuning and turbo tho.
But it’s a really good daily drive
I wish I could hear what it sounded like before. Mine is stuttering when I start it and throughout, until it basicly warms up.
What’s secondary air injection pump for?
Volkswagen sold a 2.0L Golf in the U.S. in 2004? I thought they only sold 1.8L turbo and a 2.8L normally aspirated versions of the car that year in the U.S.
Good video, thanks for posting!
No problem! Glad we could help!!
Hi bud, can you show me where is the pcv valve located with this engine?
where did you get the new spark plugs specifically? i searched up them and have various ones. i literally have the same model as you.
Just went to the local parts store because they were actually cheaper to get there than buy and pay shipping from an online source
awesome video man! how much did the wires cost you? and where'd you buy them
Thanks! Got them from Amazon, they were around $35 IIRC.
thanks!
They are more expensive 6yrs on, I just paid 60euro
Hi Obsessed auto. I have a query. May I have your contact details. Its to do with the connector where the oil cap screws on to. Its broken and needs replacing. I have an MK4 just like the one on this video.
My wires are sparking thru the boot to engine block is it just bad wires or what's causing it
Bad wires.
I've got the 1.6 version, I imagine it would be the same setup...
awesome video,
so i can just pull spank plug wires off spark plug wityh out buying a spark plug puller?
Yes. I used channel locks.
careful though i just did that today and one of the cables for the spark plug wires ripped off the connection doing it by hand now i have to buy a whole new set soo sad ! you can also use a string to wrap around the plug to pull it out as well ! just be gentle with the string or by hand pulling .
Multi grip plyers, prob the same as channel locks, dont pull by the wires, they break, grip on to the connectors
My secondary air pump bolt is broken specifically only #3😂
Same lmao
Same! 😁 99 Jetta ✌️
Azg?
Do you remember the gap size used for the spark plugs?
0.40
Stupid design. I sent my car to the mechanic shop to replace a transmission sensor cost cad$2k, they said the parts are not expensive but have to take off the engine to replace it. stupid design 😅😅😅
Ok video why you didn't change the coil pack while you were there . The coil pack is more than likely what caused the fouled plug
