  • In this video, I tell you how I ruined my childhood crappie fishing pond! I don't want you to make the same mistake I did, so I am putting this video out there in hope that you learn something! Before you go stocking crappie in a small pond, knowing the basics of pond care and maintenance is essential to having a healthy pond! CRAPPIE will ruin a small farm pond or body of water. You have to make sure the body of water is big enough and has enough bait to support a healthy ecosystem. I hope you enjoyed this video. Thanks for watching! God Bless!

Those minnows are Western Mosquito Fish. They should be a pretty good food source for the fish in that pond, but it is overpopulated.

Have mixture of a few brood (13-15 inchers) with a lot of 7in to 9in. All are black crappie in which some we did stock as fingerlings a few years ago. They get a refresh reload of fathead minnow stocking as you mentioned. The pond is approximately 2.5 acres. Otters invade it every winter and as much as I hate it, they probably help with management. Love your videos, keep 'em coming.

A good friend of mine asked me to stock his pond with crappie about 20 years ago. I added about 30 crappie. He was happy. About 3 years later I caught my first one. It was a beautiful 11 incher. We thought we did a great thing. Recently I learned it was a horrible thing. The pond is not big enough to sustain the population. It’s about 3 acres. Now when I go I can catch a load of 5-7 inch crappie 😢 The huge bream are almost nonexistent. My buddy is older (late 80’s) and I’m not sure he understands what happened but maybe I’ll tell him next time I’m at his lake

A friend of mine has a 4-5 acre lake that was once a catfish pond. Over the last 40-50 years bass and bluegill were added and by the time I started fishing it you could never catch a bass over 10-12 inches. The experts told me to fish it as hard as I dared for two years until either I caught nothing or the average catch was over 2 lb. I have caught and ate 100's of bass with once a year catching a big bass and release the big ones. I threw in 5 adult crappie 2 years ago and now that population is about 9-10 inches. The crappie provide food for the bass and the bluegill are still making plenty of food for everyone. Next are a small handful of tilapia to make it better. they keep threatening to drain it and start over so its is not hurting anything. @@903fishing

Only thing worse than throwing crappie in a pond that small is Green sunfish. Easy solution. Throw out every crappie and green sunfish you catch. Everyone of them. And introduce some big bass!

@@903fishing Im not a fan of bass either. But im smart enough to realize the pond isnt balanced and needs bigger predator fish or human to fix the problem. You can start by not throwing those fish back. Until then that pond will be what it is. It wont fix itself.
