  • Stocking POND with CRAPPIE, BASS, and ???. How to build your own MEGA Fishing Hole with these simple rules! We stocked our pond last year with Minnows, Shiners, and Bluegill. One year later we are now stocking our pond with the Predator fish. With the recommendations from the fisheries we are getting our fish from, we are stocking our pond with Large Mouth Bass, Crappie, and two other Species that will be fun to catch and eat!

    Excellent job at managing the predators
    And not going overboard with it. I’m jealous 😆 never seen walleye being stocked in a pond before or stripers

    Found your channel searching for how to maintain crappie in smaller ponds. Gonna look through your channel & see if you have any updates since this was 3 years ago. I wanna build a 3acre ish pond and specifically use it for crappie. IDC about any of the other fish, I just wanna be able to go out & catch slabs year around.

      You will need to add a predator to an all crappie pond. Otherwise you will get stunted crappie eventually.

    I have a friend that is adding a pond to his property. It is almost 1 acre and will be 16ft deep at its deepest point. We are trying to decide on what fish to stock - bass, bluegill, redear and hybrid bluegills - fat head minnows also. I am curious about the hybrid stripers - how are they doing? We are also considering yellow perch. How big is your pond? How deep? What are the water requirements for walleye - never thought about adding them to a pond. Oh - he is going to add a windmill aerator also to keep the water circulating. Looks great!

    • @ShadyOaksFarm
      @ShadyOaksFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Andrew! Don’t know yet how they are doing. Will know more this summer. 15 ft deep at the dam. Average is about 10 to 11 ft. Hybrid stripers should do well. Just don’t reproduce. Walleye the same. Walleye need the deep water. Make sure your friend stocks the forage first, then wait for them to reproduce and get a jump start on the predator fish. More forage established the better. Most suggest forage the fall before stocking. Perch do well also. Our pond is at least 2 1/2. NRCS shot it off and did the dam calculations etc. I suggest anyone building to use their services. Free!

      @@ShadyOaksFarm thank you so much - there is still a little more to do before they are able to weld on the close off valve and let the water start backing up. It is so good to hear from someone doing this that is a couple of years ahead of us. The plan is to stock the forage probably in September 2021 (provided it fills over the spring/summer) and then the predators in April/May of 2022. Really interested in the hybrid stripers - they are so fun to catch. I am looking forward to seeing the growth of your predators - walleye are my favorite freshwater fish to eat.

      @@ShadyOaksFarm thanks we were wondering about that - I just sent him a link to your video so he can watch it. We are afraid that the yellow perch might overpopulate - I like your adding extra predators to hopefully counteract the crappie (I think perch and crappie have the same reputation). I wondered if some stripers would help keep them in check. I don’t think his pond will be deep enough/big enough for walleyes too - I wish it was 😎😎. Perch are a close second on the tasty scale 😊. Thank you for your information - I am sure I’ll have more questions lol.

      I've got an 8 acre lake and I've got crappie ,bass, bluegill, and some pesky warmouths. Warmouths are a bigger threat to bass forage because they are fast swimmers. I throw the warmouths on the bank for the birds.

      That is true, but nothing like a bass!! Here is an excerpt from the Missouri DNC.
      “Channel catfish eat fish, insects, and aquatic plants. Catfish begin to eat fish when they reach 12 to 14 inches long but are not a significant fish predator in Missouri ponds. They usually eat fish that are generally dead or injured. Small catfish feed on aquatic insect larvae, crayfish and algae.”
