  • This is my third Subaru (2 Legacies and an Impreza) head gasket repair and it has always been a bit challenging to remove the harmonic balancer without power tools or an air compressor. Subaru makes a special tool however I don't do enough repairs to make it worth it to buy one.
This method uses only hand tools and leverage. It must be done when the engine is still in the car though. I use the two small extensions in two holes in the balancer. Then I use a long extension and cheater bar to be wedged between the car frame and the two short extensions. Now that the balancer is wedged in place, I use the ratchet with a long cheater bar for leverage. There should be a pop and crack noise as the bolt breaks free.
    Tools:
    2 short 3/8 extensions
    1 long 3/8 extensions
1 Small Cheater Bar (leverage bar)
1 Large Cheater Bar (leverage bar)
    1 1/2" Ratchet
    1 22mm socket

This is the most useful thing I’ve found how does it not have more views. Especially because I don’t want to pay for a tool that I’m literally just using once.

Lol if you already have everything on top removed out of the way you can just stick a crowbar in the opening to the flywheel, there is a tab that'll come around and catch to stop the motor from turning.

You can just get a break over bar lay it against the frame on the driver side and bump the engine
