    This is the most well rounded review of the Surface Book 2 I've seen yet. Rather than just bitching about things like the awkwardly placed headphone jack, you understood why the designers did it that way. You recognized an issue, understood why it happened, and then determined whether or not the design team had made an acceptable trade-off. Most tech reviewers seem incapable of doing that. You also gave some excellent advice on how to get the most out of the device.

      @@najmaabdi1592 Just saw the message, sorry! I'm still loving it. It is really pricey, but it is amazing if you can get your hands on it, and I was lucky to have it provided from someone else. Whichever one you get, 1050 or 1060, I personally recommend one with highest storage option. Screen is really, really clean. It runs a lot of things impressively, with decent cooling and fan sound. The top does get heated a bit, but I didn't feel it. The battery runs amazing. It does almost every job decently. Gaming, modeling, animating, drawing, presenting in your classes, just taking notes in general, a lot more. The pen, in my opinion, is really great. Maybe not as good as Apple pen but it does the job, really good as well. It was a huge bummer that I can't use the keyboard as bluetooth, as keyboard is useful for drawing digitally (undo, redo, shortcuts, etc).
      The laptop is surprisingly sturdy, you don't have to worry about the hinge crushed, as I'm... a bit of a reckless person ;)

      My mac-book pro (mid 2012) gave out on me 2 weeks ago, i had already done everything to customize it, like replace the Hard drive with the SSD and the cooling fan wasn't working so also replaced that, memory was already maxed out at 16gb and it stopped receiving updates from apple and I am a computer science major and loved the mac os and computer customization (replace the HDD etc...) but today you cant do it with microsoft or apple as everything is soldered in. so i decided to go with the surfacebook 2 15" 1tb this time, and it replaced my ipad and macbook. i love it for school. i love that even when i detach it into tablet mode i still have the Windows 10 OS IN A TABLET and with the ipad you still have not really usable/customizable IOS thats my personal opinion. Also if i needed the mac OS again i could just run a virtual machine and get it although not advisable.

    Have a Surface Pro 4 as my portable entertainment/light work device and now an SB2 15" with the GTX1060 as my do-it-all powerhouse for heavy workloads, digital sketching, image processing, gaming, etc.
    I absolutely love my SB2. Sure, the surface products are expensive and you can get more bang for your buck if you're looking for something specific like a gaming laptop or perhaps if you don't need a dGPU and just want a simple 2-in-1. However, they have some of the best ergonomics, functionality and pen input on the market, and in the case of the SB2, nothing is as versatile nor as good at doing so many things so flawlessly. It honestly does everything I throw at it with such versatility and style. The SB2 really is unique on the market.
    The only minor negatives so far are the thermals that you pointed out in the video - it can get a bit toasty, especially the screen and around the GPU vents on the base when doing intensive tasks - and there are also some games that don't quite have the full gamut of resolutions in their settings and don't deal with the odd aspect ratio of the SB2 screen very well. Other than that, it's a fantastic machine.

    I have the surface book 2 15" and I can honestly say it's the best device I've ever owned. It runs any game I throw at it flawlessly, works fantastic for music production and even rendering videos out with FL studios native ZGameVisualiser is a breeze. You didn't even touch on how fantastic the support is for using the surface pen, with many apps like xodo and nebo making my studies at university that much easier. I can write, sign, and complete assignments that I would usually have to print out and do by hand then scan on my printer without even getting out of bed. It's just so handy, and with the reversible screen you can almost ignore that it's a laptop (using an external mouse and keyboard and propping the laptop up on a stand with the screen reversed) while still utilising that GTX1070. Very happy customer here :D

    Loved every second of this video, very well done my friend! Considering a SB2 to replace my old MacBook pro and iPad as I transition from imovie to premiere pro for editing. I'm leaning towards that 15" for the 1060 gtx but the 13" looks so much nicer and many creators have been reporting good performance in premiere despite the 1050 graphics.

    • @Joe-qc2fw
      @Joe-qc2fw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      People love to bang on about how expensive Apple and Microsoft products are but fail to understand how infinitely better the build quality is. Nothing from Dell, Asus, HP, Lenovo etc comes anywhere close to what Apple and Microsoft put out. Not just the build quality but design. The speakers, screen, keyboard, and trackpad are never quite right on other brands. Plus they do retarded things like putting the camera on the bottom of the screen (Dell). I use a 12 inch MacBook with nothing but a headphone jack and 1 USB C port and have used an adapter literally once in 2 years. It’s the future. I see all these people getting up in arms about the lack of ports and how they’re all apparently professional content creators who need them when in reality the vast majority just watch videos and use social media on our laptops.

    • @KumaMech
      @KumaMech 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      they dont have to be professional content creators to need all them ports. i need all the ports i can get when programming and troubleshooting my robots (or other machinery) :p having a built in ethernet port plus having multiple usb-A ports available is more convenient than having a some dongles hang off the laptop. Full sized SD card readers are also nice if you take pics/video with a camera. also, that exageration on build quality. HP. Lenovo and Dell do have products that have comparable build quality to apple and microsoft devices, you just have to look hard enough ;p

      Joey clearly your not a power user and you cant speak to everyone needs or wants based on your own experience.

    • @CommentFanatic
      @CommentFanatic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Joey So disregarding a large market is your solution? If you need a potentially $3000+ machine for watching Netflix and googling memes then something is wrong with you. These devices are not focused on that demographic, so to basically say "the demographic they're aiming for doesn't matter" is kind of ridiculous. As someone who actually needs a heavy load device, the surface book 2 is just not worth it at all. The fact that under heavy load it drains your battery WHILE ALSO PLUGGED IN is simply stupid. I returned it and got another Dell XPS 15, this time a 9570. Just as good build quality, better power efficiency and more affordable.

    • @Joe-qc2fw
      @Joe-qc2fw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The vast majority of consumers aren't programmers and robot troubleshooters either. I mean I understand people with your needs exist but Apple isn't going to completely change their entire design by putting Ethernet ports, Card readers, and USB-A ports, making their laptops twice as thick, heavier, reduced battery/speaker space just because there's a few robot programmers out there. Why stop there? Why not add a full size hdmi port, VGA, multiple audio ports, displayport, firewire, DVI, and bring back the DVD drive (after all a few programmers need them). See my point? Like where do you draw the line? Obviously Apple has drawn it where it concerns the vast majority of its consumers.
      Now as far as build quality goes I challenge you to name me one device from those brands with equivalent build quality to a Macbook Pro or Surface Book 2. I've used the Dell XPS laptops and they really don't come close.

    On the hinge, some have complained about it but… if they look a bit closer… it is well designed. The hinge protects the screen from the keyboard. Ever open a laptop after much use can see the keyboard outlines on the screen. Bow hinge keeps the screen and keys apart, cleanly, securely - properly.
    On the separation, of the tablet aspect. If the base is “done”, a Logitech K380or K780 (Bluetooth) and Microsoft Mouse (Bluetooth) can talk to it. Helps too, if one flies in “E class”. Table is small and seats going back, work space disappears quickly - awkward. Using the Logitech & the mouse - can keep working Charging for cord is same cord for base as it is for tablet.

    Nice video. I absolutely love my 13.5" SB2. Best laptop I've ever owned. I returned a 2017 MBP because in all honesty, that keyboard is a pile of shit. One of my mates told me I just need to get used to it... No way. I loved the SB2 keyboard immediately. If you need to spend more than a couple of weeks with a keyboard to "get used to it", then it means it's shit haha. I agree, Microsoft should release a desktop keyboard with the same feel, and just tidy up the backlighting a bit.
    Oh, I actually think the surface connect port is great also. People never mention on TH-cam that the SB2 actually has 2 surface connect ports - you can literally connect the power directly into the tablet portion when disconnected from the base... Which means we can also connect the surface dock and have a tablet with multiple USB, ethernet, and Display Ports. That's so awesome.
    Only issue I have had with mine was after the Windiws April update I noticed some lag with certain tasks. I did a clean install, and now it's running awesome again... Was a bit annoying, but I'm so glad it's working flawlessly again. I definitely recommend the surface book 2 to anyone looking for a premium and versatile machine!

      Oliver C to each their own, and I do agree the speakers on 2017 MBP are better, but I really don't like the keyboard at all. Considering the recent class action against Apple regarding keyboard issues (keys falling off and frequent jamming), I wouldn't say that it's a good keyboard, or that the build quality is better. Very good video! I liked the lighting, Color grading and composition.
    Nice work!
    I'd like to add some infos to what you said into the video.
    The undervolting is a very good solution, I've tested it on my Surface Book 1st gen with dgpu.
    But everyone has to find the safe spot, where the system is stable even under heavy load.
    There's no worse to do than working on undervolted CPU which is not stable, can lead to data corruption, especially after a potential bsod caused by undevolting. Be warnes everyone, that the undevolting accurately, the amount of a safe undevolting depends on your CPU, it's different between every CPU.
    In the video I've seen an undervolting of -110mV, which is a lot.
    Also, playing a game on battery it's not a good way for battery health on the long run.
    Discharging so heavily and fast the battery can wear it very fast. much better playing with AC adapter plugged and battery at 100%.
    Hope it helps taking care of our Surface Book 😉
    I'd like to ask also about the new Premiere feature which use the iGPU.
    Was it introduced in the last update?
    How it works?
    Thanks in advance for your work, nicely done! 😉

      Thanks to your video I did some research.
      Searching on Google I got curious with this article: www.focuspulling.com/cc2018/ about April 2018 update.
      It really works! You need to have a Quick Sync enabled CPU to gain benefit of that.
      Here is a query on Intel website to check if your CPU has Intel QuickSync: ark.intel.com/Search/FeatureFilter?productType=processors&QuickSyncVideo=true .
      In few words, this CPU function allow you to use both dedicated and integrated GPU to encode a Premiere project.
      In my SB1 worked like a charm. I did two different encoding tests with Hardware Acceleration enable and software version.
      Please note this isn't referring to Cuda acceleration enabled or not.
      This option is in the Export window in premiere.
      On a 16sec H.264 clip encoding with a 3D LUT applied the difference was huge. The encoding time cut in half.
      The software encoding needed 32sec to encode the entire project, while the Hardware Acceleration options taken only 16 seconds!
      Of course I need to test on more complex and longer project to check the boost gain, but this is very promising.
      Also, if you check the task manager you'll find the iGPU has a much higher usage if hardware acceleration is enabled during encoding, it was almost all the time to 67%.
      While encoding in software mode it was about 7-10% all the time.
      Tested on Premiere Pro CC2018 and Adobe Media Encoder version 12.1.1 (April 2018 update).

    Great video, I played around with undervolting my SB2 after watching this and saw similar results. Have you tried installing the Intel Graphics Dashboard? It lets you turn off the annoying auto screen dimming "feature" and tweak some additional settings.

    I've been using first gen SB i7 for more than 2 years and I had a problem with battery have been swelling and I had to replace it. I used to use it on heavy load. Rendered in 3ds max. Also, I turned off connected standby to have an ability to customize CPU usage and limited maximum CPU usage to 75% but it didn't prevent battery damage from overheating. So I recommend to be carefull with heavy CPU load on Surface. Now after battery replacement, I use Tthrottle utility to limit overheating and almost don't use it for rendering.

      Same problem here with my first gen SB i7. I ended up just removing the battery on the screen rather than replacing it (couldn't find a replacement battery anywhere), and I've continued using it just as intensively as before with no issues apart from losing around 1-2 hours of battery life.

      Please could you confirm what you are using to limit the maximum CPU load? I’m getting insane throttling when using the AC power (regardless what performance mode is selected).

    Ah "proxy" files. I used to do this back in Premiere 6.0. I only had to make duplicates myself that were easier to edit with and name them the same as the originals. Then when I was ready for rendering I'd just move the proxy files from their location and point Premiere to the originals.

    Great review and thanks for noting the performance of the 8gb/256 model. I’m in the market and am eyeing some 16gb/512 or 1tb models second hand, for around $3-400 more than the base i7. Would a regular user justify this extra 20% cost bump, or is that just an unnecessary expense that only power users should consider?

  • @aaroncompton9283

    Awesome. I'm not a tech guy but that power mode tip is great - I'm a writer but not a fast typist so I'vebeen playing with using the pen in Scrivener - I flip the screen around to write. It's awesome but there is a little lag between me writing and it converting my cursive to text.I just put it into "best performance" mode and the lag seems way less. It's not perfect but it's still comparable to the speed of my dodgy typing.

      You'll want to check Autodesk's ISV certs. The machine is definitely capable, as Siemens NX, arguably far more advanced (and definitely more expensive) software is ISV validated on surface books and studios.

    I wonder if its possible to do some undervolting or other tweaking on the 15 inch model's GTX 1060. When in High Performance mode and plugged in, the 15 inch model can actually drain its battery because the 1060 sucks so much power. I heard Microsoft was going to release an update that lowers the clockspeed of the GPU to prevent this but I don't know if they ever did it or not.

    • @Dragonblaster1
      @Dragonblaster1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aron Faine My first MacBook Pro did exactly the same thing, but it never even got a mention. What Microsoft say is that there is a max performance setting where the battery will change under load, but they give you the option to "go to 11". It would take hours and hours to drain the battery anyway, and the SB2 drops out of Max Performance when the battery level gets below a certain percentage.

    Hey! So I just spent $1999 on a replacement laptop for college, and ended up going with the Surface Book 2, which shipped super quick and arrived yesterday afternoon. I got the 15 inch 256GB, 16GB RAM with Intel i7. After I got the laptop fully updated I powered it off and shut the laptop. I noticed that there was a reasonably subtle sort of crackling/crinkling sound from the hinge when ever I shut or open the laptop screen. Is this normal for the computer and is it something I should worry about while my 90 day warranty from microsoft is still in effect? I just need to figure out if this is a normal thing and if I have to worry about the noise causing damage to the hinge over time? I'd totally appreciate any advice or similar experiences from you guys! Thanks for all your content!!

    You are so lucky for having one that works! wanna sell it?? I had one on my previous company, SB2 with 1 TB and it was a disaster. Conflicts with my Wacom pen, lots of issues to unlock the tablet, blue screens, computer not turning on sometimes (you need to press many times), poor Photoshop performance, etc. It was a nightmare. And I saw many others with the same issues, even after getting the laptop replaced. I feel that, if you really are lucky and it works, then it's an awesome laptop, but if you have an experience like mine, aparently quite frequent with this device, then you really lose the confidence, as I did, on Microsoft hardware. In fact, I went back to Apple, and will probably stay there, even I was willing to give it a serious go to Windows, :(

    I'm quite tempted by it but I hate coil whine and i'm unsure of the durability of the design and the bugs. I've heard of the graphics card disappearing, needing to press the eject button because it won't power on, gaps between the tablet portion and the base. Plus you can't even get a battery replacement for it so it's essentially disposable. It's certainly a cutting edge design but maybe that comes at the cost of long term durability and reliability? I've already sent back an XPS 9575 because the speakers distorted (but strangely only in clamshell mode), coil whine and not really liking the aesthetic of it very much. I'm thinking of getting another macbook pro even though I wanted a touchscreen for music producing.

      If you play around and lower the settings down to High or Medium, you will stay at 60fps. You Also need to dial back on the resolution. But, there are hacks to improve the frame rate like he said.
