Free boats aren't free. Once you take possession, you are responsible for any back rent on slip fees as well as slip fees going forward. Also most marinas require insurance on the boat. Insurance requires a marine survey (good luck with that on a free boat). Most likely you as the new owner will just be kicked out of the marina. and no other marina will accept your boat. They have all been through this before.
Seems strange you would abandon a boat. The marina should be responsible for maintaining ownership. That way when the state steps in they can easily get the owners name.
Why can't they just strip them and take all the toxic fluids and chemicals out of them and then tow them out to deep water and sink them? Make an artificial reef?
Because they are made of plastic. The plastic doesn't degrade...it just wears down into a million little pieces that poisons the entire food chain. Steel boats rust away, making a good reef. Wooden boats rot away. But plastic/fiberglass boats? That's forever. Have to be properly recycled or even burned.
This issue is created by the greedy boat producers who have successfully lobbied the legislature to seize boats and then destroy them. It is great for wealthy boat makers it is horrible for the tax payer. Your elected official at work padding his retirement account.
