The irony is this was once a very elegant vessel ... And someone would take it on as a project ... Sailing seabird just bought a 41 ft 15 plus year boat that had been flooded with rain water for a Euro ..to rebuild in the S of France. They need to get that spare diesel off the deck and pump out the contaminated bilges. The haul out is going to be a monumental task that main mask is big and the Ketch mast is probably as big as Ricks SSL main.
Nothing great about this boat. For a 60' boat look how they have to duck to walk around. The beam has got to be in the 11' range. It's been leaking and rotting for years.

It's one of those boats that I wouldn't take even if you paid me, my days of dreaming of fixing up an old boat are long gone. I couldn't think of anything worse to do. One thing that comes with age is wisdom and that tells me to give this old boat a wide berth
One thing I've learned over 40 years of experience sailing is that rebuilding a boat old or relatively new ,It gives you an advantage while out at sea or in remote parts of the world , to know absolutely every butt connector every wire , every hose camp, through hull, every single bolt and screw and truly knowing every system on the boat gives you peace of mind when offshore ! Even more so than a band new boat that your not familiar with . Have fun people !!!!!!!

I am currently in the yard in St Augustine working on my 33 year old Bruce Roberts steelie. Getting everything below waterline done. I know this boat now, inside and out. I carry a welder on board for small jobs. Tools to do anything I might want/need to repair. If all you know are the fuel filler and key, get a different hobby or learn what you need to know. Ignorance at sea endangers not just you and your crew but others who may have to search for you.
I have been sailing since 1967. It is still surprising how often people abandon a sailboat at sea. A lot of the time there is absolutely no reason to get off the boat. Just shameful.
What are the laws surrounding an ABANDONED SHIP? Is it free game for anyone who claims it? Does International Waters make it easier to claim these floating ghosts?
@@Glostahdude There is no more “ high seas salvage’’. Registered owners must give written permission or sign over title. BUT, in some countries. Cash is everything. Government corruption rules.
@@howardrich2662 I’m pretty sure you are still entitled to a reward appropriate to the value of what you salvaged. It can get pretty complicated, what happens if the owner claims on their insurance and the insurance declares it a complete loss, but a few months later someone tows it into port with a few bumps and scratches?
@@Aron-ru5zk no, only if your a licensed captain and vessel. You cannot just board a abandoned vessel. Every country has different salvage laws. Scavengers laws send you to jail and you loose you boat.

I had a 43' powerboat. Every time I thought I had it zeroed out, it would break my heart again. I put up with it for 10 years. Had many good times on her, but I reached the point where my wife and I had enough. Man, if you haven't seen the movie "Dead Calm", this boat is very reminiscent - especially when it was floating the floorboards. To my non+expert eyes, that is either megabucks restoration, or a total loss. Beauty when she was in her prime that's for sure.
Thank you for this journey, I realize now how good I have it fixing our old 41 ketch Stardust that sat 25 years and got her sailing in 3 months, this boat here looks like several years and 40 -70 k to get it to anything near ABYC or Lloyds specs.

I would LOVE to do that but it takes a deep pocket to restore what looks like a classic cold molded wooden hull with teak decking. Beautiful as she is and seaworthy after all that abuse ! Rick is right. Lots could be recuperated and the rigging looks solid still. I've owned cold molded yachts and their construction makes them VERY solid. But painstakingly expensive to restore and upkeep. A beautiful expensive project.
From a distance, that boat has beautiful classic lines reminiscent of years gone by. Close up, breaks my heart it has not been maintained for many many years. Interestingly, it appears to be a US registered vessel which I believe means that all repairs would have to be brought up to US maritime standards. IF the hull and structure are sound and with all of the rigging in place, it is a distant possibility that in the hands of the right restorer it could be a beautiful ship again. Short of that, the best thing to do is intentionally sink it at depth as an artificial reef as sad as that sounds. In that brief walkthrough, there was some glimpses of a refit. The ceiling panels are more modern than something from the sixties, the cabinet work other than hinges and the like showed good attention for the finish of the wood. This is a very bipolar enigma. Captain Rick, you are probably the only qualified person in San Andreas to provide recommendations for what to do with it. If the owner abandons it I’m sure the fishing boat captain isn’t going t get a cent for his effort which really sucks. I’m hoping for a better outcome thought. Keep us posted.
If the the guy who was "hired" to rescue it does not get paid he then has legal rights to have the boat seized. I hope that he gets fair reward for his efforts, as I would not wish this boat on anyone without good knowledge of what they are taking on and most importantly. DEEP pockets.

When I first started watching sailing channels these kids were given a slightly small fiberglass boat, no mast, no engines, and put it together, living on it while they did. They eventually made it out into the Caribbean, where they might have eventually abandoned it due to lack of everything. The story of this boat might be similar, and how the current owner ended up with it would I'm sure be quite a story in itself. She was a beautiful lady at one time. It has much more than the one the kids rebuilt, yet, needs so much its amazing.

It would be awesome to see someone get ahold of that boat and see them fix it up. I'm sure in its day, before the years of neglect it was beautiful. Someone could spend years on a you tube channel just filming all of the repairs! Captain Rick should buy it and start another channel just filming all of the repairs 😃
Looks like a few years too gut it, and rebuild it. Probably some stuff is salvageable. Would be a great project for a local wanting a tour/ dive/ scuba operation. Good size. Steel hull is a bonus. Awesome head, a wide open galley, dining area, proper engine room with storage.

The decks look like they are in relativity good shape. Get it in a shipyard, order a dumpster, and get everything out of it. Stabilize the decks and cabin tops, stabilize the hull, and get to work, one section at a time. Totally salvageable.

Anyone else thinking insurance claim on lost boat in hurricane? Doesn't look like the births could have been used or anyone planned on using them. Any provisions or were they not planning on being aboard that long? Was quite the craft in her day.
Thanks Rick for sharing that that was quite fascinating to me on a Sunday morning I actually drink 2 cups of coffee while watching that lol. Looks like a great boat for Mrs. Lonestar friend of yours; i’m not sure if the owner wants to do with it but if they were willing to donate it to a TH-cam channel to do a flip it might be brought back to life. The thing about everything in the way it is you don’t need to salvage anything it’s a total gut and rebuild so you have the freedom to paint a blank canvas. I think it cost way more money when you try to fix or salvage stuff because in the long run it’s going to be game over. The tech decks can be sanded sealed. A new dodger with some new isinglass glass thing about having the old electronics is there’s no reason to keep them. My guess is it’s a $250,000 boat in mint condition if somebody wanted to take 65 to 85,000 got it seal it up and put it back together they could probably have a pretty nice vessel. The engine may need to be replaced as well like I said you don’t have to salvage anything you can start with a blank canvas and keep it as you want it and put in the right and newer materials as needed. She's a beautiful yacht and deserves to find someone willing to put her back on the oceans. Don't hear of many yachts left to drift in a storm that make it through the storm... The underminings of an excellent yacht and good design to begin with if she can handle bad weather with no crew.
@@AdamC5013 Any Blue Water boat is a tough boat. THIS one is a beautiful one. Cold molded wood with teak decks and a classic shape. MAny other blue water boats wouldn't have survived what this yacht has suffered. Thats what I meant.
@@team3383 Yeah surely it’s been through hell. I’ve heard lots of stories of people getting scared jumping ship and then people tracking it down and recovering it. Based on the condition of that boat I would’ve been scared and ready to jump off before leaving the harbor ha ha
Alot of properties, including yachts were charter and vacation businesses that were running on a shoe string went belly up during Covid. Many of them abandoned and left to their own fates. Vanett was part of a charter yacht business that went bust, links to their website go to 404 now.
Oh that boat definitely needs a movie company to make Captain Ron Two? Maybe TH-cam would consider investing in an overhaul if plenty video content is involved. I have to presume at this point of the state it is in hull integrity and masts would be the deciding factor in whether it is worth saving?

A solid hull is a solid hull. That is the main thing. Everything else is details. Expensive details maybe, but it is just details.

On the East coast of England we use Anchors like that all the time and they work fine in the silt and sand of the Thames Estuary..

Anyone else thinking insurance claim on lost boat in hurricane? Doesn't look like the births could have been used or anyone planned on using them. Any provisions or were they not planning on being aboard that long? Was quite the craft in her day.

Thanks Rick for sharing that that was quite fascinating to me on a Sunday morning I actually drink 2 cups of coffee while watching that lol. Looks like a great boat for Mrs. Lonestar friend of yours; i’m not sure if the owner wants to do with it but if they were willing to donate it to a TH-cam channel to do a flip it might be brought back to life. The thing about everything in the way it is you don’t need to salvage anything it’s a total gut and rebuild so you have the freedom to paint a blank canvas. I think it cost way more money when you try to fix or salvage stuff because in the long run it’s going to be game over. The tech decks can be sanded sealed. A new dodger with some new isinglass glass thing about having the old electronics is there’s no reason to keep them. My guess is it’s a $250,000 boat in mint condition if somebody wanted to take 65 to 85,000 got it seal it up and put it back together they could probably have a pretty nice vessel. The engine may need to be replaced as well like I said you don’t have to salvage anything you can start with a blank canvas and keep it as you want it and put in the right and newer materials as needed. With lots of work and open up some walls it would be a good boat if you can get it at a cheap price. Thanks Rick for showing us around.motor looks like a good size I would raise the deck about 2 foot for headroom when replacing the deck with new wood or put fiberglass deck. But she's a rough boat
Wow, that was once a beautiful vessel for sure... ! I am amazed at how long that was floating around at sea.. An Captain Dave, your an amazing human. To not only tow the vessel to St. Andres. But also offer to fix her up for the owner in turkey.. You're all amazing people, there's something so special about the boating community....I hope everything goes well with getting the vessel buttoned up!!

Collin on Sailing Parley Revival spent over a year at Linton Bay along with David working on their 450's. Maybe he saw something as a rough as she is she is an eye catcher.

She's a beautiful yacht and deserves to find someone willing to put her back on the oceans. Don't hear of many yachts left to drift in a storm that make it through the storm... The underminings of an excellent yacht and good design to begin with if she can handle bad weather with no crew.
Happens more than you think, many blue water boats are built tougher than us meatbags!
@@AdamC5013 Any Blue Water boat is a tough boat. THIS one is a beautiful one. Cold molded wood with teak decks and a classic shape. MAny other blue water boats wouldn't have survived what this yacht has suffered. Thats what I meant.
@@team3383 Yeah surely it’s been through hell. I’ve heard lots of stories of people getting scared jumping ship and then people tracking it down and recovering it. Based on the condition of that boat I would’ve been scared and ready to jump off before leaving the harbor ha ha
Alot of properties, including yachts were charter and vacation businesses that were running on a shoe string went belly up during Covid. Many of them abandoned and left to their own fates. Vanett was part of a charter yacht business that went bust, links to their website go to 404 now.
Oh that boat definitely needs a movie company to make Captain Ron Two? Maybe TH-cam would consider investing in an overhaul if plenty video content is involved. I have to presume at this point of the state it is in hull integrity and masts would be the deciding factor in whether it is worth saving?
Lithium iron phosphate batteries in a water tight compartment would be just fine. Provided all the breakers worked.
