The scene of Viserys interrupting so abruptly and clutching his cane to walk in is such a perfect reversal of Allicent’s “green dress” interruption. The entire sequence of the doors opening through Daemon crowning him was absolutely world class filmmaking
Everyone kept wondering how Viserys remained alive for as long as he did got their answer tonight. That man had an immense will to live. He summoned the last of his strength to rise from his deathbed and walk into the throne room under his own power to sit on the Iron Throne one last time and then to hold a final dinner with his family. And it truly sucks that a misunderstanding of his last words help kick off something he never wanted. Paddy Considine, start making room on your shelf for those awards you just earned in this episode brother

While it does suck that there's a misunderstanding with his last words, the war would have happened even if he had said nothing. I mean Alicent KNOWS that Viserys is on milk of the poppy and that it muddles his brain, he has clearly not been talking much sense for awhile now yet she chose to take these very confusing and messy last words of his as she wanted. I mean c'mon Viserys hasn't wavered once all these years about Rhaenyra but he suddenly does out of the blue, while sick, not making any sense, and clearly confused? If she had good intentions she would have understood him for talking nonsense and just kept quiet, but she just uses it as a justification to enact what she wished for all along: make Aegon heir.
first time I cried.. when he was looking around at his family one last time and he was so happy.. I literally started crying.. 1st time since watching this series..Good Job Paddy Considine.. Viserys was my favorite character..

Then the dinner oh man, I cried again, it was like a gift to him, to see his family together and in "peace". I'm surprised this show made me cry that much, it's just so sad 😭
Vaemond wasn’t introduced in this episode, he’s been in several. He gave the eulogy at Laena’s funeral, making subtle but obvious remarks on Rhaenya’s kids to which Daemon inappropriately (or appropriately) interrupted by laughing.
Viserys dropping his crown only to have it picked up by Daemon who then helped him to the throne actually moved me to tears, that was the best isolated moment in the season for me and a fucking fantastic culmination of their relationship up to now. Despite all their differences Daemon had his back in that moment and it was really touching to see.
He said them leaches on the council will suck you dry name me as your hand and I’ll protect you Viserys didn’t listen but they loved each other Daemon thought his brother was weak but when he watched him walk thru the thrown room changed him he looked at him being strong at that moment
Matt Smith deserves an award for all the acting he did just by simply giving looks while Viserys was suffering. You know what give Paddy an award for his role as Viserys too!!!
I won’t lie about it, but the scene where Daemon helps Viserys to the throne broke me… Viserys in general broke me this whole episode… Knowing my own life and what happened to my own brother in his passing it made me realize how much I miss him… Those two throughout the show had their ups and downs and at that moment it showed just how amazingly well written that brotherly love is…
I was NOT expecting to cry this episode, but King Viserys broke me 🥺 He really had me out here crying lol. Man, the actor has done such a wonderful job with this character. I’m actually gonna miss him 😭

Another underrated moment is when Rhaenyra shows baby Viserys to her father! He seemed so happy that they named their child after him, he deserved a little happiness in the end
I have to applaud the consistent and touching performance of King Viserys throughout the series. He portrayed a truly benevolent and caring patriarch. His speech at the dinner-table was tear-inducing. With his every breath you could feel the sorrow, joy and hope for the people around the dinner table. Even though he was not born a great warrior nor a great conqueror, you believe he would die a thousand deaths if he knew it would save the life of any single person at the table. So with the last ounce of his fading strength, his only plea is that when he no longer has any life to live - nor give, that everyone at the table...simply not strike against the other. So tragic. R.I.P. King Viserys, first of his name.
RIP to Viserys. Despite his many many mistakes he was a good man who just wanted to do what he thought was right. Also shoutout to Rhaenys who despite losing so much still somehow stands strong.

Nah, Alicent knows that he wasn't talking to her, she's not that stupid, also she knows that Rhaenyra also have a son called Aegon. But Viserys was talking about Aegon the Conquerer or Jon Snow, he clearly said "he saw beyond the wall".
Props to the special effects makeup and set departments, they're absolutely killing it. It would shock me if Paddy Considine doesn't get an Emmy nomination for this role.
One thing I think goes overlooked in this episode is when Viserys pulls a knife on Vaemond. Even at his weakest moment, he was willing to defend his family's honor

It's funny to see that Alicent asked for an 'eye for an eye' at the end of episode 7 and finally it was Viserys who protected the children of Rhaeynyra who lost an eye
Sadly, a lot of this could have been avoided if Visery had just let Daemon be his heir, or let him marry Rhaenry years ago when Damon first asked. They would have been in love, had a true pure heir, and no one would have tried to contest the child. But, when he married Alienct and allowed her to take over the castle there was no going back. Now all hell is about to break loose.
Daemon was the heir, but he couldn't stop acting like a such fool, not even his brother could defend him. As for the Rhaenyra thing, HE TRIED TO TAKE HER MAIDENHOOD DURING A PUBLIC ORGY.
The writing, the acting, and omg the makeup job on Viserys were all perfect on this episode. I love it and it feels like we just started the main story while episodes 1-7 were simply the prologue.
Everyone seems to unanimously break at the moment Daemon helps Viserys up to his throne.. But FOR ME, I was actually sobbing when Daemon first sees Viserys in his current state. FUCKING PROPS to Matt Smith, dude. The nuances in his facial acting in that scene. Where he couldn't even bear to see his brother in that state. And i'm about 99% positive there's a single tear that rolls down Daemon's face. I am just floored by the S tier acting from EVERYONE in this series. Emma D'Arcy's performance in those moments really just sell their entire family dynamic. I'm so immersed everytime I'm watching this show, because the performances are just SO GOOD. So convincing. I feel like anyone who has had to watch someone they love(thats old, suffering from disease, etc.), can reallllly feel those scenes.
This was another unbelievably incredible episode. You KNEW this was it for Viserys. Just knew....everything about this episode related to Viserys was SO powerful.
RIP Viserys. Props to Paddy, that performance of a good man desperate to keep his family together in vain was great to watch, and I nearly shed a tear for him. Also Aemond is probably the coolest of the Greens.

Brilliant episode. Love how daemon can say 10 words an episode but he still shines. This episode had me clapping alot. My dogs kept looking at me like wtf!
I love how they showed Aemond and his reaction after Daemon destroys Vameon.😂 Even tho there were no words between the two, their faces and the way they breathed said a lot 😂😂😂😂
Two fun facts: - King dropping his crown was actually an accident during the filming but they did not interrupt but just kept on rolling with it. Turned out great it seems, wasn't in the script. - How the King dies in the books is different: there is no "accidently talk" to Alicent in the books so she could "mistake" and make her son the next king. King passed in his nap in his room alone and he was found by the queen, but she did not want to inform the realm of his death but instead locked the gate, put two guards there and left him there for a week so the Greens could plot the crowning of the next heir.
It broke my heart the scene with Rhaenyra and Viserys in bed and in his unconsciousness says "my only child", that to me says it all. To him Rhaenyra will always be his true child. Doesn't mean he doesn't love the others but in his heart he only sees her daughter as the legacy of him and Aemma and that makes me so sad. The protection of her Dad was the only thing keeping her save. Until now
Best scene of the entire show so far for me has to be Daemon helping Viserys make through those final steps and crowning him. They spent most of the season at odds because Viserys kept sending Daemon away, but even with his hand (Otto), his wife, his daughter and everyone else in the room, it was his brother that helped him. They really loved each other, and makes you wonder what could've been avoided if he had been his hand from the beggining
Aemonds actor is phenomenal, he was one of my favourite characters in The Last Kingdom so happy to see him in this, Helaena's actress was also in The Last Kingdom. Love seeing lesser known actors showing up in such a huge show.
Ngl, i legit cried the moment Viserys entered the hall and his crown fell off then Daemon picked it up, help him get back up and put his crown again in his head. Daemon really loves his brother and vice versa. 😭😭 P.S : I love how Daemon be like : "KEEP MY WIFE'S NAME OUT OF YOUR F****** MOUTH!!!!" To Vaemond.😂
Episode 8 was terrific, all around. The look on Viserys' face as he surveys the room -- he nows this will be the last time these people will be in a room together, "peaceful" like this. He knows his feeble body and harried breath is the only thing keeping them from tearing each other apart. In fact, as soon as he is carried out of the room, violence erupts immediately. I feel so bad for him. What a performance by Paddy Considine. And I think we were all theorizing that Alicent might misinterpret Viserys' last words, and it seems that's exactly what happens. She cannot in good conscience thinks this is the one (1) time Viserys is lucid enough to make proclamations on who should sit the throne... but she will use it as justification to install her son on it nevertheless. The final two episodes cannot come any sooner!
This episode was probably my most favorite so far but of course it is the saddest because watching viserys walk into the throne room and Daemon helping him made me cry and the dinner was also upsetting because all viserys wanted was his family united together and no more fighting but of course we all know that they only acted to come together during the dinner because he wished it and then ended up fighting after he left the room not respecting His wishes but the ending with Alicent was crazy when viserys thought he was talking to Rhaeneyra and now alicent is gonna go forward with seeing aegon on the throne no matter what it’s gonna be crazy.
I was not expecting to be so emotional this episode! Viserys was sooo sad and then to see how Daemon was really being affected as well to see his brother like that. 😭😭😭😭 Such a heartbreaking episode!

Aemond watching intensely with impressiveness as Daemon slices a skull in half is literally all I need from this show. Would be great to see those two on the same side… Basically they’re one and the same, with Aemond sitting in silence being a straight threat (throwback to young Daemon)

I involuntarily screamed 'Let's go!' at the top of my voice capacity as if I was responding to commands from Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, lol. Dark Sister is the MVP of the episode.
Looking back at that Small Council Meeting at the beginning of the episode, there actually was some support for Rhaenyra and Lucerys' claim. King's Landing may still hold some allies for Rhaenyra.
Yes, there's still some support for Rhaenyra within King's Landing, and Otto & Alicent will try their best to quash that. Also, look out for the twin knightsguard Ser Erryk & Ser Arryk. If they stay true to the book, their stories would be one of the most heartbreaking moment in the series.
Your explanation about the conversation between King Viserys and Alicent at the end was spot on! Also, Rhaenyra also has a son now named Aegon. There's two Aegon in the series-- Aegon the Elder and Aegon the Younger.

Viserys did think he was talking to Rhaenyra and was refering to Aegon I's dream. Alicent took it at he was referencing Aegon II. Rhaenyra does have a play left becuase she named her first boy with Daemond Aegon as well, then second Viserys with a pure Targaryen blood line. She can claim that she told Viserys that and he was actually referring to her first born son to Daemon as the prince that was promised.
The funny part is as much as they arent on the same side. Daemon knows aemond is the new "him" and every look is like "that cheeky little fuck said what i would have said" and when he cut off vaemonds .. head... aemond was like... that was a nice move.
It’s also interesting symbolism that as viserys has his mask off, the half of his face that is rotting is also the same side of the dinner table where the Hightower’s and his sons sit. And also when Rhaenyra & Daemon come to see him & later Rhaenyra alone... They're on the side that's not rotting away. But when Alicent comes to give him milk of the poppy before he dies, she sits besides him on the side that's rotting away
In the end Daemon really cares about his brother. All this could be resolved if Raenyra married whit Daemon. Now the dance begins! Regards from Brazil!

Some may call this episode boring, but I thought it was a perfect send off for viserys. Paddy considine killed it and put on a masterclass. It was sad watching him try one last time to mend the family. Lots of touching moments this episode. Daemon helping his brother and putting the crown on his head etc.
Nothing boring about this episode, it was great. There will be some who say it was boring but they are the type of people that would have trouble reading and understanding a comic strip.

Nah, Alicent knows that he wasn't talking to her, she's not that stupid, also she knows that Rhaenyra also have a son called Aegon. But Viserys was talking about Aegon the Conquerer or Jon Snow, he clearly said "he saw beyond the wall".
Props to the special effects makeup and set departments, they're absolutely killing it. It would shock me if Paddy Considine doesn't get an Emmy nomination for this role.
One thing I think goes overlooked in this episode is when Viserys pulls a knife on Vaemond. Even at his weakest moment, he was willing to defend his family's honor

Sadly, a lot of this could have been avoided if Visery had just let Daemon be his heir, or let him marry Rhaenry years ago when Damon first asked. They would have been in love, had a true pure heir, and no one would have tried to contest the child. But, when he married Alienct and allowed her to take over the castle there was no going back. Now all hell is about to break loose.
Daemon was the heir, but he couldn't stop acting like a such fool, not even his brother could defend him. As for the Rhaenyra thing, HE TRIED TO TAKE HER MAIDENHOOD DURING A PUBLIC ORGY.
The writing, the acting, and omg the makeup job on Viserys were all perfect on this episode. I love it and it feels like we just started the main story while episodes 1-7 were simply the prologue.
Everyone seems to unanimously break at the moment Daemon helps Viserys up to his throne.. But FOR ME, I was actually sobbing when Daemon first sees Viserys in his current state. FUCKING PROPS to Matt Smith, dude. The nuances in his facial acting in that scene. Where he couldn't even bear to see his brother in that state. And i'm about 99% positive there's a single tear that rolls down Daemon's face. I am just floored by the S tier acting from EVERYONE in this series.
Emma D'Arcy's performance in those moments really just sell their entire family dynamic. I'm so immersed everytime I'm watching this show, because the performances are just SO GOOD. So convincing.
I feel like anyone who has had to watch someone they love(thats old, suffering from disease, etc.), can reallllly feel those scenes.
I missed that a series made me feel this hype, it is so well written and produced and the performances are perfect.
I was way more attached to Viserys than I thought I was. This episode, it kind of broke me a little. I miss television giving me this kind of reaction
I think the fruits of that final scene are going to be heartbreaking. Rhaenyra and Alicent were so close to reconciling.

Two fun facts:
- King dropping his crown was actually an accident during the filming but they did not interrupt but just kept on rolling with it. Turned out great it seems, wasn't in the script.
- How the King dies in the books is different: there is no "accidently talk" to Alicent in the books so she could "mistake" and make her son the next king. King passed in his nap in his room alone and he was found by the queen, but she did not want to inform the realm of his death but instead locked the gate, put two guards there and left him there for a week so the Greens could plot the crowning of the next heir.
Viserys at his physically weakest moment was at his best as a King and Father in this episode, just beautifully done, give Paddy all the awards
It broke my heart the scene with Rhaenyra and Viserys in bed and in his unconsciousness says "my only child", that to me says it all. To him Rhaenyra will always be his true child. Doesn't mean he doesn't love the others but in his heart he only sees her daughter as the legacy of him and Aemma and that makes me so sad. The protection of her Dad was the only thing keeping her save. Until now
No, it pretty much proves he never cared for his other children. He's a shitty father.
Best scene of the entire show so far for me has to be Daemon helping Viserys make through those final steps and crowning him. They spent most of the season at odds because Viserys kept sending Daemon away, but even with his hand (Otto), his wife, his daughter and everyone else in the room, it was his brother that helped him. They really loved each other, and makes you wonder what could've been avoided if he had been his hand from the beggining

Episode 8 was terrific, all around. The look on Viserys' face as he surveys the room -- he nows this will be the last time these people will be in a room together, "peaceful" like this. He knows his feeble body and harried breath is the only thing keeping them from tearing each other apart. In fact, as soon as he is carried out of the room, violence erupts immediately. I feel so bad for him. What a performance by Paddy Considine. And I think we were all theorizing that Alicent might misinterpret Viserys' last words, and it seems that's exactly what happens. She cannot in good conscience thinks this is the one (1) time Viserys is lucid enough to make proclamations on who should sit the throne... but she will use it as justification to install her son on it nevertheless. The final two episodes cannot come any sooner!
Only 2 more episodes left of this magnificent season ,I don't want it to end and I'm gonna miss the King! 😭.

This episode was probably my most favorite so far but of course it is the saddest because watching viserys walk into the throne room and Daemon helping him made me cry and the dinner was also upsetting because all viserys wanted was his family united together and no more fighting but of course we all know that they only acted to come together during the dinner because he wished it and then ended up fighting after he left the room not respecting His wishes but the ending with Alicent was crazy when viserys thought he was talking to Rhaeneyra and now alicent is gonna go forward with seeing aegon on the throne no matter what it’s gonna be crazy.
I was not expecting to be so emotional this episode! Viserys was sooo sad and then to see how Daemon was really being affected as well to see his brother like that. 😭😭😭😭 Such a heartbreaking episode!

Looking back at that Small Council Meeting at the beginning of the episode, there actually was some support for Rhaenyra and Lucerys' claim. King's Landing may still hold some allies for Rhaenyra.
Yes, there's still some support for Rhaenyra within King's Landing, and Otto & Alicent will try their best to quash that. Also, look out for the twin knightsguard Ser Erryk & Ser Arryk. If they stay true to the book, their stories would be one of the most heartbreaking moment in the series.

the scene where Viserys lost his crown and Daemon picked it up wasn't scripted, but they liked it so much that they kept it in as it shows that Daemon does care for his brother. i also cant praise Paddy Considine enough, his performance in this show was breath-taking and deserves an Emmy for his performance
Viserys did think he was talking to Rhaenyra and was refering to Aegon I's dream. Alicent took it at he was referencing Aegon II. Rhaenyra does have a play left becuase she named her first boy with Daemond Aegon as well, then second Viserys with a pure Targaryen blood line. She can claim that she told Viserys that and he was actually referring to her first born son to Daemon as the prince that was promised.
Daemon and Aemond are peas in a pod. The respect Aemond has for Daemon decapitating Vaemond is subtle but clear
Viserys was a king and a father in this episode. Pulled at my heart.
The funny part is as much as they arent on the same side. Daemon knows aemond is the new "him" and every look is like "that cheeky little fuck said what i would have said" and when he cut off vaemonds .. head... aemond was like... that was a nice move.
It’s also interesting symbolism that as viserys has his mask off, the half of his face that is rotting is also the same side of the dinner table where the Hightower’s and his sons sit. And also when Rhaenyra & Daemon come to see him & later Rhaenyra alone... They're on the side that's not rotting away. But when Alicent comes to give him milk of the poppy before he dies, she sits besides him on the side that's rotting away
The writing in this show is just on another level. There's such a deep understanding of the psychology behind every character. It's nuts.
God this episode is perfection. Call it recency bias, but this genuinely might be the best episode in GoT/HotD for me.

Some may call this episode boring, but I thought it was a perfect send off for viserys. Paddy considine killed it and put on a masterclass. It was sad watching him try one last time to mend the family. Lots of touching moments this episode. Daemon helping his brother and putting the crown on his head etc.
Nothing boring about this episode, it was great. There will be some who say it was boring but they are the type of people that would have trouble reading and understanding a comic strip.

Daemon helping Viserys got me so emotional. Such a great and heartwarming/heart wrenching episode though I was constantly expecting something really bad to happen
