I have a weird fascination with characters that are just straight up horrible human beings, and fully embrace it.
It's not really all that strange. Such characters stand out nowadays because it's long been the norm for every nasty character to have some tragic backstory to make them be that way and therefore force an angle of sympathy- everyone has abusive parents, or were betrayed by previously close companions, etc etc. Sometimes a character that is cruel and nasty for no greater reason other than their own satisfaction is not only more appropriate for the context, but also is a breath of fresh air in a sea of paint by numbers 'tragic' bad guys who're themselves victims of circumstance.
The character doesn't necessarily need to lack the tragic past, he just has to come with terms with being evil.

I think one of the biggest missed opportunities in SU is not having Kevin play a bigger role, while we're waiting for the diamonds to actually BE evil, he could serve a great antagonistic role, one that constantly makes Steven challenge his optimistic opinions on people. One thing SU has been lacking in was, for me, an antagonist; Kevin could easily fit that role for a bit, at least to allow Steven to question his beliefs.

I would like it if Kevin became Steven's arch-nemesis. Like Steven ruins his life one day and causes Kevin to snap and swear revenge on him. Then an agent from Homeworld observes him and gives Kevin a suit made from Gem technology for the sole purpose of him destroying Steven and The Crystal Gems. This suit would give him special abilities and use it to try to get revenge on Steven.

Kevin probably wouldn't learn anything from it though, so that would be disappointing. Guys like that tend to brush that stuff off as a fluke and be like, "Oh well, maybe next time." :/

Kevin forced himself into Stevonnie's space. when first encountering them he looks Stevonnie up and down like a piece of meat. they asked him to leave them alone and instead he pressures them to dance with him. the way he talks to Stevonnie makes me grossly uncomfortable. Its not just him calling them baby.

Since you didn't understand why Steven hates Kevin so much, let me paint you a picture. You're young and optimistic so you decide to go to your first real party. At first you're having a great time, but you quickly begin to feel suffocated by the crowd and want to leave. Just as you start to panic a jerk named Kevin starts ogling you.Normally guys like this can be easily ignored, but you're already upset. No matter what you say he won't leave you alone. His eyes makes your skin crawl. His propositions make you want to gag. You finally get away from this asshole, but the damage is done and your night is ruined. Some time later you've gotten over this night. Then he appears again. Your feelings of disgust come flooding back, only now they've been magnified by the distorted lens of hindsight. His name sparks instant anger. Nothing he or anyone else can say or do could change your mind about him. This is what Steven feels about him.
the entire episode of Alone Together was about CONSENT. Kevin doesn't ask for Stevonnie's consent to dance, instead he forces himself on them. His presence. His touch.
The crewniverse confirmed ALone Together is about first times. First time being sexually objectified and how weird that is and how uncomfortable it is to have your body - in the minds of others - belong to THEM.
This is why Steven hates him. Because Kevin forced himself on them. Without their permission.
That is a very important lesson and so well handled in the episode. I wish someone would say it aloud - and Connie does say something of that kidney in Beach City Drift.

I agree with you. Maybe SliceOfOtaku doesn't get this because he's a male and probably have never been a victim of sexual assault... Also, being objectified is horrible... I understand why Steven hates Kevin. He himself felt the objetification, since he was fused with Connie.
Yeah so just because he did that means he can't ever be redeemed and is restricted to grow as a character while genocidal Dictators and colonizers still deserve a second chance right?

@@joesubel Not necessarily but he was beyond Steven's help. Kevin wasn't confused and Kevin didn't want help. The issue with people who don't want help is that you can't force it on them. He wanted to be the way he was, making him temporarily unreachable. Steven couldn't change his mind or find a reason for Kevin to want change but could find it with the Diamonds. On a side note though, the Diamonds never really get "redeemed". Even after 2 years, in the movie, Steven still doesn't see them as such, seen by how he finds every excuse to avoid being around them too long
Kevin is probably my favorite human character. I don't know what it is about sadistic characters that act like assholes for the sake of acting like assholes, but I love them. Kevin reminds me a lot of Izaya from Durarara.

Dude, calling THEM (you know, two kids in a trenchcoat) some sexually loaded nickname despite them explicitly stating that he should stop shows that he is super ready to step over any personal borders and makes him really hateable.

calling someone baby isn’t anything unusual in a flirting situation though? How does that make him hateable? Stevonnie only said they didn’t want to dance because they felt alone, not saying “no dude I am not interested in you I don’t want to dance with you”.

He literally called them "baby" like every single teenage douchebag who doesn't know any better. Doesn't mean they should be restricted to grow as people and should be treated worse than literal space nazis.
Kevin seems like a legit sociopath, generally they do not feel empathy like normal people do. Its often why sociopaths/psychopaths can become murderers - because they have no remorse and only view people as objects. Obviously not every sociopath is a serial killer, but many actually are CEOs and such. Since Steven's ability hinges on an almost psychic ability to empathically know people. If Kevin has little to no empathy- Steven can't make a connection to him.
I think you made a great analysis of Kevin in this video! Though I do wonder how much credit you gave to Kevin's quality of preying on others. I really think that is where Steven's hate is rooted in, that and how it personally happened to Stevonnie(getting their weakness preyed upon at the dance).
In the end of Kevin's second appearance, Stevonnie is already a more mature fusion, having gained self-confidence to match their strangely-captivating presence.
Kevin is a great foil to Steven, and in that way I can't wait to see how he appears next. That's the kind of person who uses others as a toy for enjoyment though, and you've gotta limit exposure or we'll all resent any appearance of Kevin in the future.
I feel like Kevin and Marty are really similar in how they're both really mean characters that don't really get redeemed in the show. Marty obviously doesn't have as strong of a connection with Steven as Kevin does, but he does share a similar connection with, *drumroll please* , Greg. I think that not only are Steven and Kevin foils of each other, but the relationship between them and the relationship between Greg and Marty may be parallels too! Both show really kind-hearted, compassionate characters confronted with selfish a-holes. The difference is, I think, since Greg is older and more mature, he was able to handle Marty in a healthier way than Steven initially did; Greg acknowledged that Marty was a bad guy but didn't hold any grudges and even acknowledged the unintentional, positive effect Marty has on him whereas Steven (or Stevonnie) had yet to at least until the racing episode. Anyways. I just think that was really cool. This was a cool video. Thanks for reading ^√^

SliceofOtaku I believe Kevin is the character that is to help Steven with his emotions towards humans. Not everyone is amazing as 99% of the people in beach city, there are tons of Kevins in the world but Steven doesn't know how to bring their egos back to earth. Like Lars, Steven loves him because he's jerky (Sardonyx) "In a different way" and Steven believes he has the power to help Lars love other people. As for Kevin he sees himself as a God like no one deserves to be in his presence but, once he sees Stevonnie, he thinks that they are a whole beautiful woman (Steven got mad because Kevin wasn't really weird that's just how guys ask girls to dance and I guess Stevonnie was already in their emotions so Kevin just caught them at the wrong time tbh). The fact that everyone is afraid to talk to someone so beautiful makes it seem like Kevin isn't alone like there's someone who could understand him. I can definitely see a redemption episode for Kevin but I don't think it'll be Steven it HAS to be Connie or Stevonnie because Steven is so wrapped up in how egotistically cocky Kevin is, he can't figure out how to bring him down a few notches.

I like how Kevin breaks the mold its refreshing, if Steven universe never tackled touchy subjects or dark themes (Jasper and lapis's abusive relationship or pearl contemplating removing baby Stevens gem) I would of never kept watching the show. their typical mold is boring after a while without these dark themes or rude characters (kevin, lars, yellow diamond, etc). It's more realistic with these occasional themes
There's a lot of good insight here. Regarding the question asked about whether Stevonnie would have been okay with Kevin if they weren't in a mental spiral, my answer is a firm "no." Kevin's willingness to interrupt Stevonnie's crisis isn't a sign of being able to address them as an equal--it's a sign that he can recognize when someone is vulnerable, and is willing to intrude on their personal space, literally and figuratively. Kevin even chases Stevonnie down to do it again in case any viewers missed it the first time, and uses body language to make them feel trapped. Add in the infantilizing "baby" (which the above video references), the dismissal of Stevonnie's desires ("I don't want to dance" "Come back out on the dance floor with me"), the additional dismissal of calling Stevonnie "crazy," and the more sexualized dancing (out of keeping with the other dancers, and certainly out of keeping with Stevonnie's own dancing--Stevonnie clearly cringes away from the pelvic thrusts), and it's pretty clear that Kevin isn't treating Stevonnie as an equal--he's treating them as a mark, as attractive prey to corner and seduce, regardless of what they want. There's a lot of visual language here that's going to feel familiar to female-presenting viewers.
I agree that nobody else in the show acts this way, except for Marty, if the way he talks about women is any indication. These characters have in common a not-very-subtle disdain for the priorities and needs of other people. As Greg says to Marty, "Women are people," and it's not hard to pick up that Kevin doesn't care about Stevonnie's personhood. It's unclear whether Connie's experienced this before (I'm inclined to think not), but Steven clearly never has, would have had no opportunity to. They're also not mature enough to be comfortable with an overtly sexual approach, not that Kevin has any reason to realize that at first. Stevonnie's self-talk makes clear the confusion--why don't they like this dancing? They lack the language and experience to articulate why it feels bad.
If there's a single reason that Steven would hate Kevin, I'm pretty sure it's as simple as that: Kevin treated him and Connie like a lot of men in our world treat women, and it felt horrible, exacerbated by circumstance and the maturity gap. They feel victimized in an adult fashion, and their retreat to the relatively simple world of childhood doesn't make that memory go away. I don't think that Steven's tears at the end of that scene are all from relief.
An example of that visual language that I mentioned: the first thing that Kevin does after stepping into Stevonnie's crisis is give Stevonnie a slow look-over, down then up. It's a separate camera shot to emphasize the importance of the moment. This immediately tells the viewer that Kevin is here for Stevonnie's body, and for this show's audience, that is meant to be a warning sign, the tell of a predator.
If this were a different type of show (for instance, many anime), the camera would instead be panning up Stevonnie's body, putting us in Kevin's shoes, telling the viewer that Stevonnie's body should be our main concern in the scene. This says something about the two types of shows' intended audiences and endorsed behaviors. Kevin is an example for viewers about what behaviors not to engage in, or to accept, from the way he looks at Stevonnie to the way he talks to Stevonnie and about other people, and even his use of "girl" as a way to address Stevonnie when nobody else in the episode does so.
well Steven doesn't like Kevin cause he disrespected his (and Connie's) agency as Stevonnie. it's like a gem fusion can be a metaphor for sex (depending on the characters), Kevin intruding Stevonnie's space and dance with her without asking is set up as trying to engage in sexual relations without asking if they wanted to. and Since Connie and Steven are still kids they don't completely understand this all they know is "he did something that I didn't like and it felt weird" it's like when you reach kids "no no touch" or "bad touch" they don't know why it bad they just know that it is.
but back to what you were saying I do love that Kevin doesn't fit into steven Universe's character mold. seeing that this show is about showing that everyone has multiple layers of depth for who they are and why they do the things that they do they needed a character like Kevin. Kevin is a prime example of how some people are in the real world, some people are assholes because they can and they like it. we've all met a Kevin before it doesn't matter if that Kevin as male/female cis/trans/nonbinary black/White/brown we've all met someone who's evil petty and disrespectful of other for the sake of it, cause it make them feel good.
but also the situation in Beach City Drift when Kevin was pretending to simulate into Steven Universe character mold with his fake back story Steven was ready to gobble that shit up. this shows a huge whole in Steven character and that he's a sucker for a good sob story and will forgive all the bad stuff you've done in the past just cause you've shown a little valurability. Steven needs to learn how to be forgiven and empathic while still holding other accountable for the bad shit that they've done.

Kevin was such an interesting character and I did pick up the fact that ONLY he could speak to Steven and Connie fused. also the slight teenager undertones that he gave was sort of weird seeing not only could he talk to her but he could have the confidence to call her 'baby'

A common theme of the show is that everything has a reason behind it. From the diamonds to Lars. They all have motivations for their actions. There will be a more logical reason behind why he does what he does. While he does seem to give off a essence of breaking the logic of the show, the show's logic allows for him to logically exist, given the backstory. Characters like Bismuth have been driven to actions that is portrayed as evil, but they all have a somewhat justifiable reason behind it. Bismuth saw shattering as the way to save her friends. Pearl tricked Garnet because she thought she wasn't strong. Lapis was taken back to Earth by Peridot because she needed an informant. Blue Diamond aims to avenge the death of her friend to a group of traitors.

y'know what? I didn't like him at first, but now I realize that Kevin is the closest thing to a *true* villain this show has.
Kevin may not be as mischievous as Onion, but Kevin is a character whose misdeeds draw no sympathy from the viewer, and no remorse or development from the character.
I can now see that Kevin as a foil to Steven is a much needed piece of the plot. Well done, Slice!

I'm sorry but what I want to see is just - some casual Stevonnie moments. With or without Kevin. Like - Stevonnie hanging out with the 'cool kids' perhaps driving to re-ham that. Or Just a random clip of Stevonnie going into an M rated film. I feel Stevonnie - like a lot of the other character relations in the last season have been treated as plot devices. It's like the writing has been floundering and I sometimes wonder whether some of the episodes really ARE fillers... As in - they'd originally wrote the series to be wrapped up by the end of the current season, and now they're having to pad the season out cause they got an extra season on top...

I agree. I think you missed a valuable point from a narrative POV though, being that Kevin didn't respect Stevonnie's boundaries.
Stevonnie didn't want to dance. They were scared, frightened, confused and so they weren't into dancing at that moment in time. Kevin doesn't listen to this and pushes it until Stevonnie gives in. Frankly, it's kinda allegorical to the very common narrative of someone pressuring another person into sex. Canonically, that inciting episode is a puberty narrative...and unfortunately that's something a lot of people face during those teen years.
Of course I'm not saying that Kevin raped Stevonnie by pressuring them to dance with him, but I think on the writer's behalf that informed a lot of the reactions everybody had, including Greg.
I don't know if Steven is aware of that unfortunate aspect of life, but being Steven is so in tune with what other people need emotionally, and therefore has an intuitive understanding of personal boundaries, the thought of someone shoving passed that to force their own will...I can see why it'd infuriate him on the level it does, especially because it was done to him and his friend directly.

I think there is something to be said of Kevin for sure. His design and personality is certainly similar to a lot of anime protagonists and anime revivals in the past and in the modern day. And Steven is obviously not even close to this mold of a handsome confident character that we see time and time again in anime. I feel like Kevin's story ended but this is a fascinating take on a character I have barely put any thought towards. Pretty cool.
I hate that all these theories say that Kevin comes back, then he doesn’t. Like, they explain this perfect way to use his character for plot stuff but then he just up and left

i loved this! this actually made me think a whole new way about this guy, i still don't like him but this was whole different thing, drawing attention to a deeper part of a seemingly worthless character is amazing!
I personally really hate Kevin, but not super completely. I somewhat enjoy him breaking the mold of the show - to a point - but I really do dislike the advances towards Stevonnie, since I consider - and I believe all Gems + Connie and Greg - that Fusion is a metaphor for the ultimate showing of love between the Fusion participants. Kevin is basically intruding and making low-key sexual advances on children, I cannot stand by him completely.

I like how he seems to be a parallel to Stevonnie, they often have similar color schemes, but the name is also kind of the opposite. Steven and Connie put together makes Stevonnie, but Connie and Steven sort of make Kevin. Maybe the name part is all in my mind but that's what I think
I honestly think that Kevin is meant to be a metaphor for describing rape culture, the importance of consent and, not letting traumas of your past control your current emotional state.
Kevin is definitely something else. He breaks the mold of those in Steven's Universe and, now that I think about it, just had an overinflated ego. I believe that if Stevonnie hadn't been breaking down that they'd have liked him. Aside from him calling them baby and the people of Beach City trash. He definitely would be an interesting character to see again in the future.
I think why some people may not understand why Steven dislikes Kevin is because Kevin represents the types of guy who can get away with anything simply because he is a young, good, rich guy. When fused with Stevonnie, even though they are not a true girl, Kevin in the beginning doesn't know this and thinks that if he just continues to ask that Stevonnie will say yes to dancing with him. Steven doesn't like Kevin because he isn't respectful of Stevonnie saying no to him, and like a lot of guys, they see this as a challenge and will continue to ask to the point of harassment. As a girl I can definitely relate, and I applaud SU for going even if just superficially into the topic of consent and how it's important to respect girls (and guys too) when they reject your romantic advances.

I think that Kevin is the anti Steven. He's a sadistic controversial character like Joker, but he's actually more believable than others, it's just the pure example of bad guy, he has no reason to be bad, he is bad because it's funny, the hate is the most primitive human's emotion and kevin is this, the human's dark side. Without darkness light doesn't exist, so Kevin is the rival of Steven, if Steven is white, Kevin is black. I don't think that this character have a tragical background or something else, it's just evil because be evil is human
Kevin honestly reminds me of Elliot Rogers
The way that Kevin interacted with Stevonnie when they first met made me very uncomfortable. He checked her out, called her baby, basically hip thrusted at her, cornered her a bit, and made it very clear he was trying to hook up.
When he was dancing, the show focused on his hips right before he hip thrusted which makes me think that they were trying to call attention to that. When Stevonnie walks away from the dance floor, he puts his hand very close to her face and blocks her off quite a bit. How he tries to convince her to dance with him again very much signals how he wanted to hook up. I feel like this is why Steven hates him. Kevin tried to hook up with Connie when she made it clear she wasn't interested.
That's just my feelings on it and I wanted to bring something to the table for once.
You know.. I can hardly wait to see how kevin is resolved. After all it has been clearly stated that there are no bad people in SU. Just hard times, misunderstandings, and mistakes.
This thought just came to me and I think it's not only ironic, but probably will and should come up in the show (proving Beach City episodes aren't 'filler')
Steven has, as of the latest episode, battled four enemies who were quick to turn on him. Navy, the latest, even pulled sort of a reverse Kevin if you will - was very kind and sweet until she revealed her true colors. THESE are the people Steven has been desperate to save and when he can't, it causes a mental breakdown that nearly kills him (and Connie).

Not Jasper, who gave him a black eye, literally broke down one of his guardians, whittled down one of his big sis' self esteem, trapped a friend in a malicious fusion made of hatred, and tried to kill him numerous times even after she kidnapped him and the Gems.
Not Bismuth, who ultimately went PTSD on him when he dared to utter the same discontent with the Breaking Point the way his mother did and tried to kill him.
Not Eyeball who went serious war survivor crazy and tried to CARVE THE VERY GEM FROM HIS BODY.
Not Navy, who was sugar and spice and everything nice until she tried to throw him and his friends out a spaceship, where they would most likely die.
Steven held no hate in his heart or even friend beware for these four, but one incident at a rave and he hates Kevin with the passion of a thousand burning suns. Connie even pointed out that they fused because they essentially wanted revenge. I think Kevin is more than just a foil for Stevonnie (and Steven and Connie) I HOPE he's a lesson that not everyone is sunshine, lollipops and people hurt others for the lolz. I don't think Steven has learned that quite yet, so I'm hoping a reappearance by Kevin will actually hammer that the hell home.
My favorite human character is Peedee, and usually my only chances to see him after season one are in Renaldo episodes. But in the most recent one, he didn't get much more than a mention! I honestly think Peedee has potential to be a great human character, but he hasn't gotten much development. Besides, he was Practically Steven's only friend before Connie came in.
I suspect that Kevin is more than he seems, and that Steven, an empath, is picking up on his wrongness. The Kevin ego and his self absorbtion are surface traits, but in the first episode he shows up, he seems very creepy and out of place. I think Kevin may be a sociopath, and as such, Steven's Kryptonite, because Kevin is an itch Steven cannot scratch. .
The only time steven gets angry is because some one hurts connie

It's interesting how the crewniverse went about this, there's always a fan for each character no matter how bad they are. Hell look at the diamonds, they're adored. But Kevin. Kevin I would punch in the teeth, and I'm wondering if he's meant to cater more towards girls. I've been flirted with by an asshole like Kevin and that personality type is repulsive. Ronaldo and Lars I can handle, hell I even like them. I really like this theory and I think Kevin is meant to be an obstacle for Steven, he needs to learn to just brush off bullies and Kevin is going to be the one he needs to brush off.

Kevin sees himself as a gift from god that Everyone wants to be able to even be in his presence while in reality, it's quite the opposite and there are many that loathe him. He makes you feel inferior because of the high status he's 'entitled' to.
Stevonnie/Steven don't want the attention of the rest, they are just there and they're turning the heads of everyone around them. Not only because of their looks, but because of the aura of positivity, compassion and life they radiate. They make you feel inferior not because of their "status", but rather for the fact they make you feel that you don't deserve the love and respect they give you.
I just got the headcannon that Kevin is White Diamond. Not literally, but his personality and being a foil to Steven will be reflected in White Diamond. Kevin considers himself to be a perfect being, and he approached Stevonnie because he recognized them as also being a perfect being. And what are the Diamonds and Homeworld all about? Perfection. It's also been shown that Diamonds care little about other gems and have even built their entire empire to suit their needs and consider other gems as replaceable and beneath them, and care nothing about their feelings, hopes, or dreams. It stands to reason that White Diamond herself is most guilty of this, since she seems to be the defacto leader of the entire Gem race, so her rule becomes law and her views become the views of everyone beneath her. It wouldn't make sense for Gems to care so much about perfection and have a caste system if it wasn't implemented by the gem who runs the place. If she were a nice kindhearted figure that cared about all gems and acted like Steven or Rose, then Gem society wouldn't be what it is today.
I'd argue Kevin is the most human beach city character.
Humans aren't the perfect redeemable creatures Steven wants them to be and Kevin is a constant reminder of that which helps ground the show in reality.

He is the type of guy that you would love to hate but yet I would like to see him more developed and how he would fit as a part of Steven's character arc as the War against the Diamonds nears
Kevin is every sane person's fear: a fearless non sympathizer.
One who does see himself as a gift and one that forces that ideal into everyone he sees. It's uncomfortable and it makes you feel almost like he IS better than you because he believes it so strongly. His confidence is intimidating because it makes you question yourself and when you question your own self worth you're vulnerable to whatever is said to you and that's when you subconsciously cower against threatening advances. Instead of feeling the need to fight it off you feel the need to submit because you feel that it's above you.
And this is why abuse, emotional and physical, is often not recognized or reported. Your own mentality fights against you and you feel like you deserve to be treated bad because you are unworthy or in need of fixing. Kevin's own lack of empathy makes him terrifying because there is that much less faith that he can be changed for the better, and in some ways does more damage than any true villain ever could.
Don't fall victim to a Kevin. You are not trash, you don't need to change, and you don't need to be fixed. You are beautiful inside and out and perfect in your own way. Someone out there will look at you with no acknowledgement of flaws and think you amazing. You are never alone. As Papa Slice says, I love you. You're worth loving.

You've probably read something like this a billion times, but the reason why Steven hates Kevin (as well as many fans of the show do), is because he intruded in on their space and specifically made them uncomfortable. Like you said, he has an inflated ego, he just felt like he could walk into their (Stevonnie's) space and assume that they would want to dance with him, even though he has been told multiple times NO. N-O.. But he didn't care and kept pushing onto them until they finally gave in and danced but only so he would back off.
And then you add the name-calling layer to this. He calls them "baby", which we know that most people use it in a sexual or romantic way.
He honestly makes me super uncomfortable, and if this wasn't a kids show he probably could have done worse. In a way, I feel like he'd be a lowkey sexual predator or something, IDK. That's the vibe I got from him in the first time we've seen him.

I think Kevin's my favorite of the human characters you can base an episode on at this point. I mean, besides Greg or Connie...or Lars and Sadie I guess, now that Lars is a gem-relevant character. Or Mystery Girl depending on what the mystery of her actually turns out to be! Besides them, I think it's too late in the series to be opening up new avenues of story for the humans.

Kevin does break the rules of steven's universe and that is what makes him special as a character he isn't forgettable like all the other side-characters he is the one character that unlike the rest he has a personality of his own it's like the rest of the world was brainwashed into being all nice and stuff but with Kevin that brainwash doesn't work.
