So, ideally you just pull the anchors to 3 different paragraphs. If you don't have 3 different paragraphs but only 1 for example, you might want to think about grouping the images and giving all of them a single image caption. You can also add additional paragraphs, although this isn't the preferred method.

A figure is considered a shape when it's not placed in-line. The same goes for a text box. So you will be able to handle both in the same way as long as they are not in-line.
Didn't work for me initially. Update: For my word document moving the image anchors made no difference. I managed to solve the problem eventually by realizing that the text box captions actually have their own anchors. These are only visible while the textbox are moved. The anchors cannot be manually moved but will move with the textbox. Therefore I was able to move the textboxes to the correct locations and right click 'lock anchors'. This worked for me and I'm sharing my experience in the hope that others don't go through the frustration that I had.

I have an issue when I updated the list of figures. It appears that a number of titles have been duplicated.

That's weird - make sure you are using the most recent version of Word for Windows
