    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is an interesting question! Unfortunately, there is no way to add captions without numbers from the Caption dialog box. However, if you don't have a lot of tables and figures, you can add captions manually by using the Caption style in the Styles group in the Home tab. However, the Caption style won't appear in the Styles group until you have added a caption using the normal method. You can then apply the style to your custom text and delete the caption created using the normal method. I wish you all the best with your Word project!

    Thank you Erin for your instructive videos. I am looking for some help on how to change the Figures field (The list of figures after my contents page in my Thesis). The figures in my paper are 2 lines long, with all kinds of data. I would like the Figures field to only have the heading for the figure, and not all the data associated with it. Right now, when I update my field of figures, It has fare to much distracting information and not user friendly. I hope that makes sense. Thanks.

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! You can manually delete information from the entries in the list of figure without breaking it. However, because your figure captions are two lines long, you can also place a paragraph break (Enter key) at the location in each caption (not in the list of figures) where you want the caption to end in the list of figures. For example:
      Figure 1. Figure Title [paragraph break]
      All the extra data.
      After the breaks are inserted, you can then update the list of figures. Everything after the breaks should be removed from the list. Since this is your thesis, I highly encourage you to try this on a copy, not on the original--just in case! Good luck!

      Thank you for watching my video! It is possible to create a table of figures from multiple documents...but it's complicated. I don't have a tutorial on that topic yet, but here is some information from Tips.net: wordribbon.tips.net/T003318_Creating_a_Table_of_Contents_Involving_Multiple_Documents.html. This article is about TOCs, but it should also apply to table of figures. Also, you should be able to paste in both the figure captions and table titles. Best of luck!

    Okay, so am trying ti change the label to figure 2.1. and figure 2.2. and so on, but its not appearing on my table of figures, I suspect that when I delete the number "1" from the automatic label "figure 1", it results in this because only my figures that are labelled figure 1.1., fig 1.2., and so on show on the table of figures. Any advice?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for watching! Have you added numbering to your headings already? Word should offer the option to add multi-level caption numbers (2.1, 2.2, etc.) after numbering has been added to the headings in which the figures appear. I have a separate tutorial on that topic that you may find helpful: th-cam.com/video/SDskGKeRA7c/w-d-xo.html. Plus, here is the follow-up tutorial showing how to add the heading numbers to the captions: th-cam.com/video/SDskGKeRA7c/w-d-xo.html. Best of luck!

    • @erinwrightwriting

    Hi Erin, I am having trouble with updating my reference list for the figures. Every time I update it, it lists the figures multiple times so I have figure 6: name1, figure 7: name 1, figure 8: name1, until I have 26 pages of a list of figures duplicating. What did I do wrong?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! I have never encountered the problem you describe; so, unfortunately, I don't have a precise answer. If it were me, I would create a copy of the file, delete the 26-page list (in the new copy), and then start over with one new list of figures. If the new list updates correctly, it may show that there was a corruption in your original list. Best of luck!

  • @tapsgr88

    How do you insert sub-figure captions automatically? For example, Figure 1.1 and Figure 1.2 or Figure 1.A and Figure 1.B?

    • @erinwrightwriting

      Do you mean sub-figures based on sections in your document? If so, you can select "Include chapter numbers" in the Caption Numbering dialog box if you have established sections and/or chapters using Word's headings. Best of luck!

    Good tutorial. I have an issue with the caption numbering. I started inserting captions for tables and figures in my thesis report and they were numbering well. However, at the next day I wanted to continue with the task and the captions suddenly want to start numbering from 1, both for the table and figure label. Thank you for watching my video! That's a great question. There are a couple of ways to anchor the table/title or figure/caption, but I think the easiest way is to use a text box. First, select both the table and title (or figure and caption). Then, select Insert tab > Text Box > Draw Text Box. A text box should appear around your table and title (or figure and caption). Then, select the Layout Options button to the right of the text box and select "Fix position on page." If you don't like the black border around the text box, you can right-click on the border for different outline options. Best of luck!

      Thank you for watching my video. In Word, figure captions and table titles are regular text; they are not placed in text boxes with the figure or table. However, you can do so manually by selecting both the figure or table and caption and then selecting the Insert tab > Text Box button > Draw Text Box. Best of luck!

    Hello Erin and thanks for the video. How would you apply the APA 7th edition table format with caption? I have seen all your videos, but because table titles in APA 7 goes one line (double-spaced) below the table name, I am not sure how to apply that style to the caption. Any tips?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching my video. As of right now, I think the easiest way to achieve the APA's table title format is to place your cursor after the table number and manually insert a line break (Enter key) to move the title to the next line. However, I will let you know if I stumble upon a better solution because inserting the line break means that the title will no longer show up in the automated list of figures.

    • @PianoWanderings
      @PianoWanderings 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@erinwrightwriting The solution is to use a soft line break (Shift+Enter key). That way it will be on the line below the Table and it will still show in the List of Tables or List of Figures. It will also allow you to format the lines separately, which you need to do for APA 7 (bold for the Table number and italic for the title).
