@erinwrightwriting, thanks for your tutorial. I tried to use it, when I have to track changes, and it can't renumber figures in my Word file.
I deleted a couple previously used figures at the beginning of my document, and now my first figure is numbered as Figure 3, although it should be Figure 1.
Also, the page numbers I am using in the header are also off. When there is a transition in the document from the Portrait to the Landscape format at page 14 of 18, it a kind of restarts by showing in the header "Page 1 of 18", when should be "Page 14 of 18".
It looks like when I accept changes, I can fix the figure and page numbers, but it defeats the purpose of tracking changes and keeping red lines in the document.
Your advice would be much appreciated. It looks like a glitch of the Word's tracking function people are commenting on other web boards.

That is an interesting question. Unfortunately, I don't have a satisfactory answer. When doing high-level structural edits, such as renumbering, my best suggestion is to turn off tracking and instead use comments to document the changes. Thank you for watching!

Hmmm, I am stumped as to why your shortcut menu won't appear. You may be able to force the updates by selecting Ctrl + A to select everything and then using the function key F9. However, I would definitely only try that on a backup copy of your file. If you continue to have problems with your shortcut menu, please do report the issue to Microsoft. I wish you all the best!
Hello please help me if you can. I have maybe 100 of different products and each products are in a seperate word documents itself. Each of these product titles has number item numbers already assigned to them in their individual word file. I also have a template where i insert any of these products and write a price at the very bottom. But ı have one problem, when i add for example 10 products in that template, all the numbers stays 1 alttough they need to update themselves 1 thru 10. It does update when i update the whole document evey time, but everytime updating document is sometimes forgetten and the whole templates item nuumbers stays 1. :) Isn't there an setting that i can set when all my products inserted, the numbers will also be updated automatically? Erin, thank you for this video. I am using Word 16.54 on a Mac. I cannot find option Select to be able to "Select Text with Similar Formatting" option. Is this an option only for PC? Thank you.

Great video and easy to follow instructions. I still cannot do a simple update of the Figs in my book chapter text after I removed five of them. At the point in the video where we are to R click on selected text, the Shortcut Menu does not appear. I am using a current version of Word.

I have two additional questions though:
1) Can one customise the Figure number created by Word and still retain the ability for it to be "recognised" when creating a List of Figures?
2) Instead of numbering Figures according to Chapters, can one number the Figures according to Sections containing multilevel numbering?
Thank you for watching! Those are great questions. If you customize the appearance of the figure numbers, they should still appear in the list of figures without any issue. (However, they won't retain their in-text formatting; they will adopt the formatting from the list of figures.) As long as your sections begin with one of Word's built-in heading levels, you can add the multi-level numbering just as you would chapters. Hi Rein, I would like to create a table with 13 blocks in one row. I would like to enter an ID number consisting of 13 digets into these blocks I would like the curser to advance automatically from block to block without need to use the enter or arrow.

How do you update the in-text cross reference "Table 1" etc... mine update to include the entire caption in stead of just "Table 1." For example, I update figure 2 in text ref so it changes to figure 3... then it shows: "Figure 3: this figure is showing blah blah blah.... etc" I just want the number updated and not the caption pasted there too

It is not updating the cross reference so just the number updates, it is updating the cross reference so that it goes from "table 1" to "table 2: this table is about blah blah blah.... entire caption." There is no answer to why it is updating with the caption included

Hi very nice video miss Erin, I want to update the table of figures, however I can't, this is what it happened:
1.I put a title on each figure, but then I updated the text and number of each one ( most of them), but I did not delete the text box and made a new one, instead I just deleted the text inside and wrote the new one after.
2 Also the shortcuts (CTRL +A) are not working on my word.
3. When I select all the text with the "select text with similar formating" the titles of the figures wont select.
4. After that if I go to the " insert table of figures " and click ok the text "there are no elements of table of figures" appers on the paper.
in that dialog box the old text that I used the first time I put a title to the figures is still available, why? it no longer exists, iis there a way to delete it?
However if I put new title labels to each pictures all over again it works, but of course I don't want to do that.

However, the figure numbers won't update in the table of figures if you manually update the numbers in the figure captions. Instead, you have to select the figure caption, right-click, and then select "Update Field" from the shortcut menu. Best of luck!

Thanks for the video but one question, please. Let's say, the paragraph is on page 1 and the table (Table 1.1) is on page 2. The two pages are separated with a page break. There is some space (e.g., page break) in front of the text Table 1.1 in the paragraph when I update it because Table 1.1 is located on the next page (Landscape) with a page break setting. Obviously, a page break is also necessary for Table 1.1. I could delete the appeared space in the paragraph manually but it is annoying. Is there any solution? Thanks.
That is an interesting question! When dealing with page breaks, I'm afraid I can't think of an automated way to remove extra space in the scenario you describe. I hope you find a solution that works. Thank you for watching!
Not quite sure if I understand the problem and I doubt this is timely, but two ideas that come to mind are using the "frame" feature to keep everything in a well defined box and not have page breaks and things like that messing up formatting. Alternatively, if can use find and replace, replace "_table" with "table" (underscore is space/paragraph mark), which could be done all at once (replace all) or one by one (should take less than 2 minutes)

Hi, Ms. Erin, i am having a problem right here. The problem is, for example I insert a caption for first figure, it show me figure 2.1 infront of my figure, but when I wanted to insert the next figure caption, the figure caption also started with figure 2.1 instead of figure 2.2, please help.
Hi, Richard. I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble. I can't be sure what is causing your problem. However, I'm wondering if you are using figures and tables? Word maintains separate numbering for figures and tables, so you will have a figure 2.1 and a table 2.1. There's no way to combine the numbering for figures and tables unless you create a separate label that describes them both.

I found a nice little shortcut:
CTRL+A followed by F9 (or Fn+F9 on my laptop)
I disabled my EndNote add-in too, not sure if that helped.
The select feature is very neat, but for my document (>90k words), it became glitchy and crashed.
