  • This 12,000 ft² residential lot which faces a golf course was transformed from a typical builder-installed turf grass lawn into a diverse native plant landscape. All changes were made with full approval of the architectural review committee in this deed restricted community. Only two "islands" (600 ft² total) of grass remain in functional areas. Now over 100 species of Florida native trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and clump grasses have brought life back to this lot. There is always something blooming and birds, butterflies and native bees have returned. Neighbors and passers by comment on the beauty of the landscape, and are surprised when they learn these are Florida plants. Water consumption for irrigation has dropped from an average of 20,000 gallons/month to less than 5,000 gallons / month. No pesticides, herbicides or fungicides are needed.

Very forward thinking and beautiful. Let's hope other HOAs are as open to this type of landscaping since it has so many benefits and does so much good for our state. Looks like a good team effort and sensitive thought went into the planning. This doesn't happen without people working together so kudos to all involved.

Beautiful. I like working in my yard. Many of my neighbors, however, are elderly and want to keep a simple yard: lawn grass.

Alright! You have a much more beautiful and interesting yard, and will be thanked by the songs of birds and the fluttering of butterflies and buzzing of bees!

Well made video . . . good music, lists plants several times, shows transformation, and gives credit to where they came from. I will save this video.

Wonderful results. Sad to think that the land must have been scraped clean of all natives.

I would like to see how the landscape looks now. How did the trees fill out, the bushes mature and how long did the ground covers and flowers last? A landscape's growth over time will tell how great the plan turned out to be.

this is gorgeous and so well presented!!!! If I'm very lucky, I'll have a yard similar, just for the dry sand-dunes of my area. ;-)

Was this done by the homeowner, or was it a landscape company. How much did it cost? How long did it take?

Katherine, Thank you for the nice post on this video of my landscape. Let me point you to some excellent concept designs for typical lots in high-density developments. The project was funded by FNPS The Villages Chapter and developed by the Univ of Florida. The latest versions meet our developments deed restrictions. Available as a simple JPG picture files, and also AutoCAD files for designers with the software to edit them. thevillages.fnpschapters.org/index.php?id=uf-project
