Landscape contractor Jenn Nawada tells us how she got started in her trade. Knowing that she wanted to make the natural world her office, she went back to school and achieved a master’s degree in landscape design. After getting her bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, she began teaching outdoor education at a farm in Vermont.
Landscape design wasn't always Jenn Nawada's plan. After getting her bachelor's degree in environmental studies, she began teaching outdoor education at a farm in Vermont. She enjoyed teaching children skills like how to milk cows or what mountain run-off was, and she knew she wanted the natural world to be her office. However, she did feel like she needed more.
To help find that missing piece, Jenn went back to college and received her master's degree. But, she found it hard to land a design job without experience, so she worked her way up from the bottom at a nursery. After learning the plants and their bloom cycles and retrieving them from the fields, she worked her way onto the design team and began designing construction sites. After learning as much as possible from the folks around her, Jenn moved to a larger design firm and started taking on bigger projects.
Years later, Jenn had a family and boss on the verge of retirement. Realizing she had the skills and designs to make it independently, she decided to start her own landscape design business. Through this company, she first appeared on a few episodes of This Old House in 2011, and the reason she joined the Ask This Old House team in 2015.
Jenn has passions other than landscape design as well. She enjoys traveling and pottery, though she admits she hasn't had much time for it recently. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and Bernese Mountain Dog (he even accompanies her on most of her workdays).

I think a lot of us have gotten degrees and never were able to work in the fields of our degrees. I was one of those people. I am very happy things worked out for you. You have been a great addition to the show.

I love this! Kindred landscape designer who gets right in there and does the work! I remember in landscape design school at the NY Botanical garden our instructor tried to hammer home the idea that we aren't gardening, we are designing! But the gardeners in the class (including me!) just didn't quite buy that! lol. I love seeing Jenn both gardening and designing. If you don't know your plants, you can't design effectively. The reason I became a landscape designer was because of one time that my husband and I hired a designer who wasn't a gardener and this person had their crew plant a garden that was all deer food. It was a disaster that was beautiful for a week. Ecosystems are just as important to know as shape and color, and using a triangle.

I love having Jenn on your team - I know there are plenty of women in the trades who'd be an asset to TOH. What about a few localized versions, like landscaping specials for the different zones. I'm out in CA and while it's great to see what you guys do mainly in the northeast, it would be cool to have something out here with the same quality.

They've been in almost every state, if not every, creating landscapes with local plants, materials, and contractors. That's of course, over however many years during the course of the series.

Got a question to ask Jenn. Three years ago I topped out my sugar Maple tree in the front yard. We did it in February. I know, that's a bad time. The sap was just pouring out of the cut ends. Even freezing with sap icicles icicles hanging on the limbs. Now I have limbs dieing off and the upper main is dieing with white fungus on it and other limbs. My question is, can I cut all the dead stuff off? Do you think it could survive?
