    Great theory! I like how you expanded on it. Regarding the second point though, I wanna debate that a little. The notion that Scar is the brains and Mufasa is the muscle is only how Scar himself sees the situation. During the movie, we have no reason to think Mufasa is just a noble brute, in fact he seems really smart, and Scar's "grand masterplan" is reduced to using violence (what he claims Mufasa would do) to solve his problems and then poorly convincing everyone that he's not responsible. As soon as Simba appears, nobody questions his version and everyone turns on Scar, who doesn't have any arguments to give other than pleading for his life. As a kid I always thought Scar wasn't "the brains" as much as he claims to be and that the movie was subtly saying you can't be right if you use the same methods you criticize.

    I was under the impression that the animals respected the lions but weren’t ruled by them. Kinda like the elephants in the new Jungle Book movie.
    Also, the pride lands don’t suffer just because Scar was ruling. It was implied (more so in the Broadway play) that scar misused the resources of land.

      "Also, the pride lands don’t suffer just because Scar was ruling. It was implied (more so in the Broadway play) that scar misused the resources of land."
      By letting the Hyenas use the same hunting lands as the lions, which could be taken as a comment on social services like universal healthcare.
      "I was under the impression that the animals respected the lions but weren’t ruled by them. Kinda like the elephants in the new Jungle Book movie."
      They bow at the beginning, and during Simba's "King" song, they join in to hail him as their prince.

      All Scar did was let the Hyenas take over and they ate all the prey animals that didn't migrate. I don't see why that would trigger a drought.

    • @bentstudios4094
      @bentstudios4094 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MDoorpsy it is never explicitly said that, when the animals bow, they are hailing Simba as their prince. I’ve always interpreted that as more of a gesture of respect rather than a gesture of submission

    • @bentstudios4094
      @bentstudios4094 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greatsaiyakirby I can’t explain the drought, but the lack of food makes sense

    • @PlanetZoidstar
      @PlanetZoidstar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It basically is submission though, what reason to the animals have to respect the lions? That they don't hunt them into oblivion? The prey don't seem to be getting anything out of the arrangement and they just mindlessly bow to the lions who exist to hunt and eat them. I wouldn't expect my dinner to bow to me our of respect because I don't eat it all in one go, it seems like the prey are kept deliberately less sentient than the lions so it's less disturbing they they are their food.
      Much like the Salmon Scene from Brother Bear. The Bears are fully sentient but the Salmon aren't sentient at all and are devoured by the score.

  • @akaMokassin

    If you watch the animals of the lion king as humans, than this video applies ... if you watch them as animals the message becomes "if you temper with an eco system that has been balanced by nature from the outside, it collapses. E.g. if you disrupt the food chain, nobody gets to eat anything and all will starve". So you can either look at them as cute animals that talk, or as humans.

    I read an article where re-introducing four timer wolves back into their natural habitat reinstated the ecosystem and even altered the landscape over fifteen years. It's therefore not that farfetched of an idea that carnivores have a place 'in the circle of life'. Scar's invasion with the hyenas made it barren because he had no restraint and no regulation.
    Scar forced his personal vendetta of envy [being a rejected heir when Simba was born] unto his own nephew and the hyenas themselves and it was poetry they became his ultimate demise. He cared nothing for them. Whereas Simba returned because of his personal responsibility and because he cared. Him being a "rightful" ruler was not simply because of his birthright - but because he was raised into a culture to care.
    I think there should have been more on Mufasa's and Scar's relationship as to why Scar and the hyenas got banished /exiled to the Dark Elephant Graveyard which is not considered part of the Kingdom / Pride Rock. (I suppose that is told in later stories.) Mufasa probably was aware of Scar's inclinations having grown up with him and was too late to protect himself and his son from it.

    • @dr.zoidberg8666

      I don't recall The Lion King dealing with & rejecting the concepts of isolationism, ethnocentrism, the American Jeremiad, & blind traditionalism... In that sense, Black Panther is really an anti-lion king. The only place it stumbles is in not repealing monarchy entirely -- but then again, I suppose they need room for Black Panther 2 plot.
      There's a lot of weird reductionism that has happened around the Black Panther movie, & I think it suffers from the Scrooge problem. Scrooge becomes a kind & generous man, repenting for his failings in the past... but still "scrooge" is a byword for miserly, unkind, & selfish. I think the same has happened among some people with the Black Panther movie... they see that, at the beginning of the movie, Wakanda is an isolationist, traditionalist, elite club & that's how they remember it -- but the whole plot of the movie is about tearing that shit down.

    No this is ridiculous, man. This was a Cracked article, with better citations. You assert that Simba was the true villain for restoring the natural order, and the natural order was there to make animals just accept their fate. But when Scar disrupts the natural order for power he unleashes all of the hyenas onto the pride lands, killing and eating all of the other animals without regard for its ultimate effect on society (which may be one reason the hyenas were forced to be on the outside). He, like all tyrants, feel that he is smart enough and strong enough to go beyond the moral law and not recognize the governing principle of the pride lands, Circle of Life. Simba as a cub recognizes the problem in the system when he asks, "don't we eat the antelope" and mufasa offers an explanation. But once outside the kingdom, Simba is offered an alternative to the moral failings of this system that you've pointed out, which is to eat bugs.(that's a sentence I'd never thought I'd write) In the end he's able to uphold the moral system, while attending to its flaws.
    The movie makes clear, at least in my opinion, that the Mufasa-Simba dynasty rules with the consent of the other animals, and therefore has legitimacy, and the Scar Regime is brought about by appealing to the worst and most rapacious aspects of the society. Presenting this movie as if it were Autocracy vs. Democracy is wrong, Scar wasn't offering democracy. It wasn't a might makes right vs. ruling with intelligence play, if anything Scar was asserting that might makes right by getting all of the hyenas to rule the pride lands by force. This seemed to me to be asking what makes a good leader vs what makes a bad leader. A good leader upholds the moral law of the pride lands, and a bad leader subverts it, and even willingly destroys it for political gain. I mean, what else is a ruler of any governmental system supposed to do if not that?

Do they sacrifice their weak and disabled? Or does mufasa just get to pick which poor antelope he rips from their family to be eaten alive by him and his concubine? This aspect of the movie always creeped him tf out

    The Lion King has always been a disgrace for its dubious take on politics (and its implicit approval of incest), but one thing with it irritates me in particular: its inexcusable slander of spotted hyenas.
    Here are a few facts about spotted hyenas: they are actual predators, they catch live preys, and only resort to scavenging when there is no other food source. Lions steal spotted hyenas' catches FIVE times more often than the opposite. Spotted hyenas are several times smarter than lions: their Dunbar number is almost a couple of orders of magnitude bigger. Spotted hyenas are so efficient they eat and digest even bones, and have evolved a new intersex gender that is even stronger than males and which has entirely replaced females in their species.

    I think you've messed up a bit. In the Lion King, everybody isn't equal. They aren't all equal humans, and don't use ad hominem (totalitarian dictators follow Plato's ideas of harmony, totalitarian dictators are bad, ergo Plato's ideas are bad) to paint the Lion King as promoting authoritarian propaganda. Lions have to eat other animals to survive, as giraffes are herbivores. This isn't "oh, everyone is the same, how about nobody eats anybody else", it's necessary for survival. Human's don't require the flesh of other humans to survive, if the Lion King was about some antelopes being king and forcing the other antelopes to accept their place as weak, inferior, and food it would actually be more similar to totalitarianism. Technically, you only have a certain amount of choice in your life. If you were born in the 12th century, you could've died at childbirth, no matter how much free will you have. Lions have to eat other animals or else they starve. They can't just switch to grass since they can't process it and they need a certain amount of energy (see MatPat's video). If worms were sentient in the movie and had cute voices and faces people would call Simba a monster. Therefore, the Lion King isn't saying that humans are cogs in the machine, you are just extending this viewpoint to humans, where it doesn't apply. Humans and the animals in the movie have a lot of differences.
    Also, Scar is not supportive of democracy. He doesn't want equality, he wants control, and to that end he is causing an imbalance in the "natural order". This isn't "natural order" in the sense that everyone is forced into roles and cogs, this is "natural order" in the sense of food webs and ecology. You said that Lion King says democracy leads to tyranny, but it was never a "democracy". Scar wasn't elected democratically or anything, he just took power because of his strength and promises, more of a cult / army than a democracy. Scar is more similar to Hitler than Simba. Yes, Simba used might to beat Scar, but so did Britain and the Allies using might to beat the Axis during World War II. Scar doesn't want a better quality of life for everyone, just letting the strong (hyenas and lions) survive by eating the weak (herbivores, else), like how Hitler was antisemitic.

      Just because the characters in this movie are made up of animals doesn't mean that human philosophy doesn't apply, because this movie is a work of FICTION.
      Should we ignore the lessons of childhood fables just because the characters were animals?
      And also just because the "circle of life" establishes order in a natural ecosystem doesn't mean that this movie should promote it in the system of governance.

    Your analysis of lion king I spot on. I can’t say the same about Plato. Besides his views of democracy and the fact that it leads to tyranny, you are far off. You are taking jumps in logic. Plato was for a system like Rome or the United States, not exactly but fairly close. He didn’t talk about people have a place and they should stick to it. Unless you have read something I have not. He liked the oligarchy of Sparta not eugenics culture. The other thing along those lines is when he says some people aren’t fit for certain things. He notes that certain people are better at certain things, and a government shouldn’t give equal power to everyone. He is just saying they aren’t fit to rule not that they should only do one thing. Nothing about eugenics just skill. He never mentions forcing people into jobs, but limiting those with power. Sorry for the rant, if I some how missed one of his writings where he says other wise please point me to it.

    I think the limits to this analogization between pride lands politics and human politics come from the inherent limits of anthropormorphization. There is a natural order to nature, if there are too many predators the prey dies out and if there’s too much prey the grass dies and things starve. There is a natural hierarchy within the animal kingdom were animals are predators and prey. This doesn’t apply to human politics because all humans are equal, and there is no natural order between us. (Any deviation from that fact results in racism, sexism and nazism.)
    The politics of the animal kingdom don’t translate to human politics because it isn’t human politics, it’s animal politics. That’s why the main themes of the movie were that of identity and dealing with the past rather than the politics of the animal kingdom because any focus on the animal kingdom becomes muddled by the translation of anthromophization.

The reason Scar is the bad guy is becsuse he believes he can order the world properly and does not need the transcendent. He is the danger of the intellect. You can never forget that what you don't know is always more important than what you do know, and you will never know everything. This is something intellectuals struggle with greatly to the detriment of all mankind.

      >.> I think you're reaching here with that interpretation of a children's film. Wise crack's criticisms of the film aren't new. They've been pointed out since the film was released. How a story is structured matters a great deal. Especially a story directed at children. So saying they're taking it too literal, is missing the context. Because kids will take it literal... they'll take it at face value and absorb it on an emotional level. Looking at how prevalent holism is in the crusade against racism... the pursuit of environmental security and the exclusionary solutions discussed during the occupy movement... I'd say the damage has already been done. (It's the same generation that also grew up on Captain planet, X-men and GIJoe PSAs)

    Great video! As a child the Lion King actually made me wounder about some of these questions. This answers to a whole lot of them-[I'm no longer alone thinking Mufasa works like a totalitarian dictator]. The balance between individualism and collectivism describes tons of difficulties. I don't really believe in any natural given order, even though, nature is all there is. Right is also might. Given "right" can be dictated by social standards, not only physical or mental power. The basic principle is all the same... Nowadays, Plato probably would have hated our society.

    I read an article where re-introducing four timber wolves into their natural habitat reinstated the diverse eco-system and even changed the landscape over fifteen years. The fact that carnivores had their place in the the 'circle of life' is not far-fetched.
    Scar pushed his personal vendetta of envy [being rejected as heir when Simba was born] unto his own nephew and the hyena that it became poetic when they became his demise. He cared nothing for them. Scar's temporary rule made the lands barren because he had no restraint and no regulation. His intelligence was eclipsed by his folly.
    Simba was the rightful ruler not only because of birthright but because he was raised in a culture of care. There should have been more on Mufasa's and Scar's backstory (which was probably better explained in the sequels) leading to why Scar and the hyenas were banished / exiled to the Dark Elephant Graveyard which is not considered part of the Kingdom / Pride Rock.
    Simba returned because of his sense of responsibility and his culture of care winning out.

Plato's philosopher king has nothing to do with a mighty lion on the top of the food chain...

  • @Theninja114
    @Theninja114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    I have a small problem with this theory, as I've seen it a few times. Because the animals clearly do not have jobs, they just live. There's no economy because they are just animals. The movie is more about harmony. And can be compared to the Wolf Populations in America. Forests without wolves often look desolate and are overpopulated by deer. Once the wolves were re-introduced to these areas, life returned to the forests. This actually happened. And it feels that many of the themes are tailored to how the animals work (The Lion leader is always the strongest).
    As for the Hyenas? The issue here is that Scar is lazy, it's shown that Scar takes all of the meat from the Hyenas, he regulates their food supply, when they are supposed to be scavengers. He forces them into poverty with the promise that they will one day become rich (corrupted American dream). This, you guys nailed. I think the issue that is presented here, is that we attempt to apply humanity to the Animals. Where the writers of Disney were trying to show how the Animal Kingdom worked. And that Scar is the "Human" in all of this. That's just how I saw it.
    I would like to see you do a followup video about the themes of Lazy=bad. Which is the theme in the movie that I notice more. Simba, Timon, Pumba, Scar and the Hyenas are all Lazy at some point, and are seen as unhelpful members of the "Circle of life." they don't contribute to society.

    • @matteomaura
      @matteomaura 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is however one thing to take notes of: sure, Disney goal was probably about showing how animals and life coexists. Except there's one little issue here; the lions here are the "kings", thus being superior to all other animals. This is a common animal stereotype, to call the lion the kinkg of the jungle, but in reality lions are actully scavegers (most of the time), just like hyenas are.
      It makes you at least think that, for this lions in particular ro be called monarchs and protectors of the circle of life, thus having the respect and servility from all other animals, someone might have played with that concept to raise in power. Probably a long time ago, so much that no one, not even the current lions, remembers that and they just take it as just the way things always were...
      But hey, maybe I'm just overthinking a Disney movie made for children xD

    • @Parasolhyena
      @Parasolhyena 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wait hold up, Scar doesn't regulate their food supply does he? To me it seemed like he was bringing them food from the Pride lands, something they are not allowed to have. In the lions version of the circle of life, the heynas are meant to starve to death.
      I mean that fits in with real world hyenas and lions as despite the myth, hyena are actually the other apex predator of the African plains, this often leads to fierce competition for food between lions and hyenas.

      @Deon Denis In fact, in a democratic republic you also can make changes through things such as lobbying. Now, it is true that the politician you chose makes the decisions for you, but that is simply because you are not qualified to make them yourself. The average person knows little about how a state worls, all the bureaucracy, and even if our democracy were direct, that would require we get lots of political training and spend lots of time making decisions. Would it be worth it?

    Here's why this video is wrong and dangerous:
    You assume out of materialistic bias that the different animals are different races or castes. They're NOT. They're different levels of competence. The lions would be tyrants if everyone was the same animal, but a lion literally IS at the top of the food chain (not in real life but in the movie and in folklore.) From your Incredibles video we can tell that you don't believe in natural differences between people or in different levels of competence. That is factually wrong. Some people are more competent than others, and in a just society, those people will rise to the top. The lions are clearly shown as being good-hearted, brave, strong, and wise. Being strong is btw not the same as being violent. The hyenas, on the other hand, represent people who don't have their act together, who are lazy, devious, resentful, incompetent etc. Scar is the black sheep in the lion family, with lots of intelligence but zero wisdom, and uses his wits to manipulate the loser hyenas into following him.
    Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting what's for dinner, as someone once said. What we have in America is a republic. We vote for representatives to avoid the tyranny of the majority. The Lion King symbolizes the communist nightmare: The breakdown of all values, all competence hierarchies; lions and hyenas (i.e. the competent and the incompetent) are both equal, but what happens is the state can't sustain itself, just like a communist state, and in the end the lions are forced to hunt more and more for less and less reward or admiration while the hyenas act as Scar's thugs. And the herds move on, just like people tried to flee communist countries, because there are no ideals and no one to look up to or aspire to be.
    In our current social justice climate, people claim that everyone's equal and good and evil are just a matter of perspective and circumstance. That is wrong and deep down, everyone knows this, which is why The Lion King is such a powerful movie. You're not just a cog in a machine, but you do have a place and an optimal way to serve your community, and that is by aspiring to the best person you can be, the hero archetype, i.e Simba, Christ, Hercules, Thor etc. Once you get yourself in order, you are aligned with the right path, by definition, and symbolically speaking at least, "you are enlightened by God/ a higher power." Don't sit around chewing on a bone waiting for some devious despot to GIVE you your share. Work for and learn from people who are worthy of admiration and EARN your share.

      Of course. That's why the lions don't go after the hyenas. Mufasa leaves them alone, and even when they try to kill two lion cubs, he spares them because the cubs crossed their border.
      Under Scar, however, everyone who stands in the way of his selfish power gets murdered.

      Enter a name here Yes...but the point I'm driving at is that if people are simply left alone, than, as you said, "some people are more competent than others...and those will rise to the top," but then those incompetent will not be able to provide for themselves, like the hyenas could not. Now in a world like this, less competent people would not have the right to live, since they are unable to survive. So if you believe in this model, logically speaking, you believe that incompetent people deserve to die. (I say this in a observational manner. I am not trying to make you mad or offend you.)

      Enter a name here on top of that the hyenas are forbidden from coming into the pride lands due to their incompetence as well as the fact that they cause a lot more harm than good. Look what happens after scar takes over and allow the hyenas to take over. The whole entire Place became desolate to the point where even the hyenas are starting the question their own motives and do see that scar was not good for anyone especially for them and actually turned out they realized that Mufasa despite being a strong ruler that push the hyenas away realize it was actually a benefit for them that they didn't take over the pride land because there is literally nothing left after they came and took over

    Your have not ruined the Lion King for me but i am half way through The Republic. I'm not going to be able to think of anything but The Lion King when reading it now :). You guys are ace!.If it wasn't for your channel i probably would never have started to read any Plato. It would be awesome if you make a video on Dororo. The 2019 anime was exceptional and I believe it could be a good source material to discuss about the moral dilemma of using Dororo for the benefit of Daigo’s people.

    You should the Philosophy of Doki Doki Literature Club.
    This would be way expand "the Philosophy of". Wisecrack focus only TV shows, movies, books. By doing a 'the Philosophy of" video on Doki Doki its gives the channels expand into the area of video games. Many games have their own deep rooted philosophy. Like the different fractions of groups in video games like: Stormcloaks or Imperials. The option of choice like in the truly matters; life is strange. Having multiple timelines or multiple save files affect the game as well like undertale or Doki-Doki.
    I've been a fan of wisecrack for years and I'm suggesting that you guys can broaden in the channel by having video games featured.

    • @cortezfilms8511
      @cortezfilms8511 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no I didn't, i just find them to be really interesting with their concepts
      like how Cowboy Bebop is more about letting go of the past to live for the future.
      Darker Than Black is plays with the idea of loosing your humanity for power.
      both are different from each other and i would like to see both of their ideas trough the philosophical lens of Wisecrack . that is all.

      that is all fine. i just want to mess with you because darker than black is shit and bebop is a classic. not shit like black clover or sao but it's not good even.. and the philosophy of that is pretty wack and nonsensical. bebop on the other hand is quite interesting.

    • @cortezfilms8511
      @cortezfilms8511 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have to disagree with you on darker than black. thou not as good as Cowboy Bebop. i really like the premise. It may not be original, but the way it handles it's premise is done differently making it stand out, and I really like the idea of the main character trying to give up his humanity in order to be more like a contractor, and I think that is really interesting. that's my stance in the series anyways.

    The hyenas were banished because they are both the only predators who would attack lion cubs, and because they don't wish to balance themselves into the Circle. The famine of Scar's rule was created by having an abundance of predators and not enough prey, turning the Pride Lands into another Elephant Graveyard.
