hw h to me both of those things can be connected, one being miserable helping them become genius and the other way but it can also not be connected because I feel every single thing will affect what they will have or who they are, like I could be really happy and smart because of how I lived and someone else could be the same with different events while someone else can also be smart yet sad and all of those combinations, but I also feel that people with same or really similar events might have completely different feelings depending on their own views, but I also think if you got a reset to this time Button and press it multiple of times and you have a family member that always will have very similar or exact events after the reset button, they could have complete different emotions because probably how they think back on those events they could see a completely different view on it, I agree with that being a possible way someone could become, they can be smart and miserable and can be miserable but not as smart... You know what kinda sucks? The idea that depression and brilliance are linked was ingrained in me and I expected my issues to have some sort of brilliance. What I learned recently was that I'm not a tortured artist or genius. I'm just depressed and it's unlikely that my name will go down in history. My suffering isn't noble or necessary.

I think Rick's misery is partly due to the fact that as the smartest man in the universe, no one can ever tell him something he doesn't understand, no one can teach him anything. When everyone is literally inferior intellectually, life would be constant frustration, he has no one who he can have meaningful conversations about physics and philosophy with, so he adapted by being a loner, which works at first, but as years wear on, the sadness creeps in. Why else would ricks seek out other ricks like at the citadel. It's just the smallest hope of meeting someone who doesn't seem like a moron in comparison.
The Duke Hey, 2 months late but I don’t think this is the case. Don’t misunderstand, Rick is definitely insanely smart, however there are many things he doesn’t know and there are things he can’t do as he’s stated before. I’d say his misery or attitude doesn’t come from being super smart but being a nihilist and the notion that life is meaningless or rather it doesn’t matter what you do because there are infinite universes. In his case (his cartoon reality) seems to be the case. However, even in his reality you don’t have to think that way as seen from Morty, but as he sees it ‘the smarter you are the more accepting you are about it.’ Just my thoughts 💭.

You take a look at the state of things in the world, and can't help but constantly think about all the variables that are crushingly depressing, yet at the same time you can appreciate the beauty of life itself in everything around you. I have an IQ of 135 and even though I’ve experienced alot of pain in my life, i’m a pretty optimistic person most of the time. Even when life is shit, I find a way to laugh about my misery. I didn’t even believe I was depressed before a doctor diagnosed me with servere depression. I thought everybody wanted to die sometimes, it seemed kinda logical to me😂 I have good periods and shitty periods, but overall i’m quite happy.

Hmm... My one point of contention here is that I know a lot of very smart poor people and dumb successful people. High intelligence doesn't necessarily mean financial success and low intelligence doesn't necessarily mean financial hardship. I think it's more a matter of the TYPE of intelligence, personality, and background.
No-one said that was the case, we are just discussing trends here. If there is some correlation, then perhaps some causation could be implied. Of course these things are so highly complex that naturally there will be plenty of exceptions to whatever rule we might come up with. Yes, personality and background certainly play a huge role in determining whether or not someone achieves success, but intelligence is by far the strongest predictor of success, there has been plenty of research made on the subject.
THIS. Not only that, but many traditional IQ tests don't ACTUALLY measure INTELLIGENCE, but your level of EDUCATION. And, unfortunately, high education levels are usually more-or-less bought. The more $ your family has, the better schools (or even private tutors) and lessons (music, dance, art, etc.) you end up attending, so you're exposed to more, which is what most places and groups tests, making a child look more gifted than they are, meaning they have more oportunities set up early on, so they have even more later in life, and it all just snowballs. Meanwhile, the kid who is actually super-intelligent ends up having to claw for every little bit they can get just to survive as an adult, along with a fair amount of grief/depression/feelings of inadaquacy because they seem to "be unable to figure out how to" better their situation, because people seem to believe that higher intelligence automatically = sucess, without taking any other sociological factors into account.
InsideJoke I don't know what "traditional" tests you are talking about, all the IQ tests I've seen in the past 20 years or so have only been concerned with testing mental capabilities (verbal ability, abstract thinking, spatial reasoning etc), as they should be. Also, educational opportunities (gifted programs and such) are rarely (if ever) based on IQ tests, there are other types of tests for that.
Intelligence didn't make Rick miserable, Rick made Rick miserable. He runs away from responsibility and avoids things that could have helped him. He bailed on his daughter for years and he avoided therapy that could have helped him and his family. There are plenty of average and below average intelligence people who do the exact same things Rick does just in a less flashy/showy way. IQ only alters how creative you are with avoiding help and improvement.
Or like you say, people who join a society like Mensa probably do so to gain the bragging rights, and so might be driven so much to join entirely optional societies designed mainly to make its members feel special might have a higher rate of depression because they don't have a strong level of internally produced self-esteem. So they strive for these status symbols only to find once they achieve them that they're kind of meaningless, and return to seeking reassurance from the yet to be obtained?
I love that episode! I feel bad for Lisa, they were finally getting along. But Homer was so depressed being lonely he stuck the crayon back into his brain be dumb again. He left her a note first, "I took the cowards way out." It must have been hard to adjust to the sudden change in lifestyle. Matt Shears I apologize I did not mean to come off as aggressive. I am open to having a conversation. I don’t like psychology because of my personal experience with it. The psychologist said that I was bound to be a criminal because of my background history. He generalized me with my profile; fatherless minority. Instead of helping me emotionally, he found that it was best to send me to a psychiatrist and dope me up with all kinds of drugs: adderall , Xanax, etc. Not a good experience. Luckily I stopped taking them before I got addicted. Want to know why theirs a drug crisis in America? It’s thanks to mass depression and big Pharma paying off psychiatrists and psychologists. All it takes to help someone is a friend who listens, no need for “medicine”.
This is one of the major reasons why Rick and Morty is so popular at the moment. The audience are lead to feel as intelligent as Rick and in a way relate to his poor mental health. Feeling smarter than everyone is isolating which is often a big part of depression. It's that 'seeing things for how they are' and not wanting to spread the bad vibes type of deal. But in a way its also bullshit, just as the current second top comment on this video states "Being Smart is only Miserable when you're not smart enough to know that since it doesn't matter, be happy instead" (Jo King). You have to take absurd in stride, no, none of this bullshit universe makes sense, you're smart enough to see this, now push yourself that bit further to see that means absolutely fuck all in relation to your own sense of overall peace or happiness, create 'meaningless' goals, achieve them, fall for the satisfaction, we live in a universe that makes no sense, so wheres the sense in feeling miserable over trying find any intrinsic meaning.
I don't think this depression is necessarily connected to the feeling of a lack of intrinsic meaning in life. It can be just that smarter people tend to notice on every turn how fucked up society can be, how unfair things are, how selfish and evil humans are, how we destroy everythng around us and don't give a single fuck. I think you missed the point of my comment Josiah. It was to highlight that assumed intelligence leading to isolation or depression is actually quite stupid. I think a lot of fans relate to Rick because of this assumed intelligence and also justify some pretty shitty behaviours with this mentality. It's a kind of poor mental health fuelling narcissism. Whats sadder than people attempting to make intelligent comments online is people screen-capping them, cropping them, uploading them and linking them to a subreddit for other peoples milliseconds of boredom fuelled ridicule. Don't be afraid to try to have actual discussions online rather than standing on the sidelines ridiculing those participating.
I don't think it is intrinsically connected but it the same way as the topics you mentioned it can just open your eyes to the worlds shittiness, one of these shitty things being the intrinsically meaningless state of our universe. I think being smart enough to become aware of the horrible parts of life is a useful tool, it pushes you to create positive change, and where you can't, why feel bad about it? The tool of depression and awareness becomes useless so is is pointless to dwell and feel negative without any reason to do so. Easier said than done of course, but a good practice to have.
for me the realisation that "life is ultimately meaningless" is comforting, significantly soothed my anxiety, now I just think to myself that my mistakes don't matter, one day I will be forgoten and as long as I'm here I have time to turn any misfortune around, in addition it made me realise the importance of relationships with others, if there is no goal in life then everything that matters is the journey, and by spending time with friends and helping less fortunate you make sure that this short journey is as pleasant and easy as possible for others
One problem with your premise, happiness is subjective. There is no way to measure if you're more joyful than your friend because you're proud of yourself for being able to pick a movie apart and understand what makes it good and bad as well as what parts specifically speak to you or your friend is more joyful than you because they feel nothing but enjoyment while watching a movie they mostly don't understand. There is also no way to swap places to see if the person picking apart the movie would even be slightly entertained if they couldn't pick apart the movie or if understanding what makes it good would ruin it for the other. A similar problem to overeager self-diagnosis, happiness is entirely subjective. Not to mention the fact that all polls or questionnaires require the statement of how happy they are and not a measurement of such. There is an expectation when answering questions of what you're supposed to say, given when you think of whatever social structure you most identify yourself by. For example, religion is supposed to make you happy therefore you are more likely to lie on a poll that you're happy if you're religious and unhappy than someone who doesn't have that expectation placed on them. They think they should be so they say they are. Even with all that said, happiness is something that is ridiculously difficult to measure even conceptually. What I think of as happiness looks like depression to my family while their lives seem miserable to me because I wouldn't enjoy their lives and they wouldn't enjoy mine. I could write a poll designed to tell if you're happy by my standard and they would all test out as depressed and vice versa.

The depression described here isn't caused by intelligence or the capability of comprehending the pointlessness in life, Rick stays in depression because he chooses to be jaded, he chooses to not seek healing or fulfillment, he chooses not to be vulnerable in relationships. He could've found happiness using his intelligence and inventions to safe lives, he could've found meaning in being a part of his grandkids' lives, but he chooses to dismiss that and declare these things have no meaning. He could've cured cancer for millions of children and helped those families, he is so jaded that he would say there is no meaning to saving children. That's on him. It's not due to his high intelligence. He's self destructive.
I think I would always rather feel too much rather than nothing at all. They say ignorance is bliss but a blissful existence almost seems like a wasted one. When you think about depression, sometimes it feels like you're so sad you're dying, but if I could cure it instantly I wouldn't want to. I actually have been to rehab, twice in my life for two different substances. It only works if you really want to quit. And I have quit several chemicals that I used to do, but I did it on my own, not because of rehab or detox facilities.

For example: On an IQ test administered by the school, when I was in 3rd grade, I received an IQ score of 130, and the administrators claimed 140 was the 'genius' level. However, on dozens of other IQ tests I've taken over the years, my scores range from 145-183, and I surely don't feel like I'm really that far above the 'genius' level (approx 37% more than those at the threshold of 'genius', or 130). I suffer from chronic major depressive disorder (a large part of which is existential depression), was recently diagnosed as bipolar (though it could be my overexcitability which causes me to be very passionate about some subjects, and generally too intense or serious for most people's comfort), and was diagnosed with ADD as a child. I have received 'professional help', both voluntarily and involuntarily, many times, but the state funded mental healthcare is choked with red tape and lack of funds, resulting in incompetent and/or just lazy "doctors" and other staff, as well as limiting the medications these facilities can provide, regardless of whether or not a patient might actually need it (such as Valium; which for me, doesn't "mess me up" or make me "high", it just makes me feel content and damn near joyful, for a short while). So, to come full circle, yes, drug abuse is what many intelligent people resort to in order to cope with their own hyper-aware, yet bleak and hopeless little worlds. Personally, now I just prefer the best organic drugs on Earth; the "sticky icky" plants, as Snoop Dogg would say.
Inteligence is a unique capability of humanity it can be used in many different ways, the problem comes when is only used in a cold, nihilistic, deontologist way. Rationality makes you happy when is in service of humanism(compassion, caring for others, etc). So is not that simple as if you are smart you are miserable.

Another misconception here is that "humanism" as you describe it, is not immediately a source for happiness as you claim. In fact, the compassion you describe can easily be the source of an intelligent person's unhappiness. There are so many people in our world who cannot be helped, due to their own ignorant ideals. In fact, those people are far more common than people who can be helped. It should be fairly obvious that a kind, caring person desiring the best for others would get depressed in such a situation, should they be intelligent enough to understand this. A third misconception here is your association of rationality and high intelligence. This is rather minor, and may be a bit of nitpicking on my part, admittedly. Intelligence doesn't have any relevance toward rational or irrational thoughts. A genius may be just as capable of irrational thought as rational thought. The same is true for dunces. The negative connotations surrounding your use of nihilism and deontological ethics suggest a misunderstanding of these concepts as well. Deontological ethics is merely the idea that action is more important than results, and the intent is more important than the event. Essentially, this is the idea that says negligent homicide is not as evil as actively slaughtering innocent people on purpose. Nihilism itself, you seem to understand the concept, however have drawn inaccurate conclusions about it. Nihilism is neither positive nor negative on its own, this depends on the mindset of the person with those nihilistic beliefs. A person who needs their life to have meaning, who needs to be important in some regard, will obviously be quite unhappy when exposed to nihilistic ideals that suggest life has no meaning. A person without such needs won't be so negatively affected. However, I do find your final conclusion to have merit. Being smart doesn't make you miserable, that's all in the mindset of the individual.
I'm very smart and cant help but to be self destructive. I am dedicated to my goals but will sabotage myself to start up again. I charm ppl and make them feel a connection but cant seem to fall in love. Basically I'm in my own head which means I get so many ideas and they aren't all good for me.

Never thought about it like that, but I think it's instructive to note that, as Rick observes, Jerry achieved his relationship with said soulmate (I'm using your term though I disagree with the very premise of such) by preying on her merciful empathy, which is a tactic I consider dispicably manipulative. I would personally prefer a relationship built on mutual trust, respect and affection that, with the collaboration of both parties, elevates the participants to a new and enlightening level of self actualization; this paradigm is distinctly subverted by Jerry and Beth's failed marriage which is punctuated by deep insecurities, ambivalence to a partner's wants and needs, severe and lasting disregard for a partner's emotional wellbeing and an uncertainty if the union was even voluntary i.e. did we get married just because we got pregnant. Given all this, I think it dubious that we could even term the two as soulmates to begin with, and I think that any real world analogy of Jerry should take a long, critical look at how they conduct their interpersonal and romantic relationships, as few of the fictional character's tendencies could be considered healthy, let alone contributable to a successful marriage.
This only really applies to Season 3. If you watch Season 1 and 2, Jerry is capable of some pretty pathetic things.. yet there were times where he did things that ONLY a soul mate who truly loved someone would do. Has everyone forgotten about the deer they hit who was shot by the hunter, and how it was Jerry who came up with the idea of the Ben and Jerry's ice cream delivery guys pretending to be an Animal Humane Society so Beth could operate on the deer without the hunter's lawyer suing her? So if you want to blame anyone for Jerry becoming a sociopathic leach, blame the creators and writers for "Homer Simpsonizing" him.
One question still bugs me. How to measure if someone is smart or not? And what does it mean do be smart? Is their a clean definition out there? I think it isnt the best way to measure someones intelligence by some kind of test. We should measure it by their action or how they respond to certain situations or problems. A smart person would do less dumb things. What do you think?
Senpai intelligence is strictly subjective. You can be smart in math, but dumb in art and vice versa. Also a test of one’s intelligence on a certain subject is usually done by placing them in hypothetical problems where this specific piece of intellect is needed.
Intelligence is ones ability to understand, remember, and extrapolate data from the world. How one measures that is pretty difficult to do, especially as most tests tend to focus on ones ability to remember or retain information, but its not impossible to do either. The other issue is that in the regular world "Intelligence", "Smarts", and "Brains" are used _very_ loosely, which tends to make it difficult to agree on a single definition, which is honestly why we don't have a concrete answer to these kinds of questions, because we keep moving the goalposts. Take the humble bragging of me for example, I tend to think I'm pretty smart, but if you ask me to remember your name after talking to you for 10 minutes I will have forgotten it. Ask me to solve a Differential equation and I will somehow end up with the exact opposite of what you want. If you ask me to analyze a problem and come up with a reasonable solution however, I can usually come up with something that is logically and physically(?) sound.
First of all being smart and being intelligent are two different things. Secondly intelligent people did and do some pretty dumb stuff throughout history. They just tend to come up with the idea to do so faster. Intelligence is just like a fast computer. But you can do a lot of dumb stuff with a fast computer just faster than with a slow one. :)

"Ignorance is bliss" is a stupid saying, while true for certain types of knowledge, ignorance can certainly be very damaging and at times even life threatening. I think it works best as a joke, not as a general statement about the nature of being.
I don’t wish to sound like a pseudo intellectual straight out of r/iamverysmart but I would wholeheartedly wish to be a rick over a jerry ANYDAY. People around me have told me I’m supposedly very intelligent but I have enough self awareness to realize my crippling mistakes that are my lack of wisdom and general laziness and if I participate in the cruel optimism that is my interest in existentialism with the double whammy that is OCD, I feel as if I’m on the verge of killing myself 24/7. Still, I would rather be omniscient and be completely devoid of happiness than be stupid and blissful.
But that defeats the purpose of being Human, living in blissful ignorance is kind of am extremely human thing to do. I can sympathize with you on a couple of things like being 'aware' and existentialism. But being aware of your lack of knowledge or having an over abumdance of knowledge is more of a curse than a gift. Its kind why theological ideas of the "tree of knowledge" lead Adam and Eve from paradise to misery.
In short, intelligence is a risk for reward system. Having above average intelligence correlates with heightened depressions and other sorts of poor emotions for a better chance to get more from life. Along the same vein having an average or below average intelligence correlates with "weaker" poor emotions with a lower chance to get as much from life. I love how many unknowns there are on how the human mind works.
Being smart doesn't make you miserable, being a perfectionist and radical reductionist does. I think it's a social issue: people who call themselves intellectuals define themselves by their relentless pursuit of knowledge above all else. But viewing yourself as a meat puppet and neglecting all your emotional needs as meaningless obstacles in the way of intellectual pursuits is basically self-flagellation. And it's hard to stop that thought pattern because if you slow down to care for yourself you're not pursuing knowledge, which to some means that you're not truly an intellectual because you're not devoting 110% of your effort into "worthwhile" pursuits. For lack of a better word, it's toxic. However it is definitely possible to be smart and satisfied, you just have to let go of "being smart" as your single defining trait.
I mean I wouldn't say I'm a "supergenius" or whatever the hell you called it, but as an intellectual outlet that *isn't* directly detrimental to your sanity, I found that philosophy works really well. It satisfies the itch for thinking and exploring without luring me to the cutlery.
To everyone thinking that IQ isn't a good predictor for success, well that's just plain false. There is undeniable evidence that there's a strong correlation between IQ and financial success. Of course you can find odd examples, where someone intelligent is poor and someone dumb is very rich, but that's just circumstanstial evidence.
More than anything, the reverse is true. Social status and success determines IQ. People in a higher social class are much more likely to have had caring parents, with healthy eating habits and educational attention, thus increasing IQ potential at birth. Common sense would dictate that narcissists fall into the upper portion of intelligence levels considered average, or toward the lower end of the scale. A legitimately intelligent individual would have the logical capacity to understand that personal capacities and self-worth are unrelated concepts. Being a narcissist would likely mean the individual's life experience indicates to themselves that they are "better" than most people, suggesting either a delusional view of their own past in general, or at least being slighly above average. Self-delusion is a decidedly ignorant path, thus it's safe to say that a person following that path would be of lesser intelligence. I know that none of this really had anything to do with IQ, but I figured actual intelligence was a more fitting metric for the discussion. That being said, there is a distinct difference between perceived narcissism and actual narcissism, which effectively invalidates any possible "scientific" method of testing for this particular issue. With uncertainty introduced on whether the individuals tested are narcissists, or simply have personalities not understood properly by those doing the testing, the test itself becomes both pointless and inaccurate.
Dont Misunderstand I asked about IQ because I don't think "intelligence" has a universal definition, so it's a little wiggly to talk about. As I've seen it, it's usually ascribed to someone as a compliment to mean "they did something difficult which required thought commendably." Someone might be called intelligent for solving a difficult math problem or logic puzzle, but be very poor at social interactions. Conversely, con artists are often called "highly intelligent" for their manipulative ability, but there's no reason to expect they would be particularly good at math.

Im a happy nihilist. Im happy BECAUSE I am nihilistic. When you know existence has no meaning, then it is a relief as life becomes much simpler, because this way you will not struggle trying to find meaning, you will just live in the moment and try to make the best of the situation, by focusing on personal responsibility. hw h to me both of those things can be connected, one being miserable helping them become genius and the other way but it can also not be connected because I feel every single thing will affect what they will have or who they are, like I could be really happy and smart because of how I lived and someone else could be the same with different events while someone else can also be smart yet sad and all of those combinations, but I also feel that people with same or really similar events might have completely different feelings depending on their own views, but I also think if you got a reset to this time Button and press it multiple of times and you have a family member that always will have very similar or exact events after the reset button, they could have complete different emotions because probably how they think back on those events they could see a completely different view on it, I agree with that being a possible way someone could become, they can be smart and miserable and can be miserable but not as smart... What I learned recently was that I'm not a tortured artist or genius. I'm just depressed and it's unlikely that my name will go down in history. My suffering isn't noble or necessary.

I think Rick's misery is partly due to the fact that as the smartest man in the universe, no one can ever tell him something he doesn't understand, no one can teach him anything. When everyone is literally inferior intellectually, life would be constant frustration, he has no one who he can have meaningful conversations about physics and philosophy with, so he adapted by being a loner, which works at first, but as years wear on, the sadness creeps in. Why else would ricks seek out other ricks like at the citadel. It's just the smallest hope of meeting someone who doesn't seem like a moron in comparison.

Don’t misunderstand, Rick is definitely insanely smart, however there are many things he doesn’t know and there are things he can’t do as he’s stated before. I’d say his misery or attitude doesn’t come from being super smart but being a nihilist and the notion that life is meaningless or rather it doesn’t matter what you do because there are infinite universes. In his case (his cartoon reality) seems to be the case. However, even in his reality you don’t have to think that way as seen from Morty, but as he sees it ‘the smarter you are the more accepting you are about it.’ Just my thoughts 💭.

You take a look at the state of things in the world, and can't help but constantly think about all the variables that are crushingly depressing, yet at the same time you can appreciate the beauty of life itself in everything around you. Ups and downs... and then there are they days where you can cruise somewhere in between hiding it all and 'blend in' better.

I have an IQ of 135 and even though I’ve experienced alot of pain in my life, i’m a pretty optimistic person most of the time. Even when life is shit, I find a way to laugh about my misery. I didn’t even believe I was depressed before a doctor diagnosed me with servere depression. I thought everybody wanted to die sometimes, it seemed kinda logical to me😂 I have good periods and shitty periods, but overall i’m quite happy.

Plato's 'Allegory of the Cave' comes to mind for BOTH Rick AND Jerry. They both are 'watching shadows on the wall'. However, Rick's shadows are very very different from Jerry's shadows. Yes, personality and background certainly play a huge role in determining whether or not someone achieves success, but intelligence is by far the strongest predictor of success, there has been plenty of research made on the subject.
THIS. Not only that, but many traditional IQ tests don't ACTUALLY measure INTELLIGENCE, but your level of EDUCATION. And, unfortunately, high education levels are usually more-or-less bought. The more $ your family has, the better schools (or even private tutors) and lessons (music, dance, art, etc.) you end up attending, so you're exposed to more, which is what most places and groups tests, making a child look more gifted than they are, meaning they have more oportunities set up early on, so they have even more later in life, and it all just snowballs.
Meanwhile, the kid who is actually super-intelligent ends up having to claw for every little bit they can get just to survive as an adult, along with a fair amount of grief/depression/feelings of inadaquacy because they seem to "be unable to figure out how to" better their situation, because people seem to believe that higher intelligence automatically = sucess, without taking any other sociological factors into account.
InsideJoke I don't know what "traditional" tests you are talking about, all the IQ tests I've seen in the past 20 years or so have only been concerned with testing mental capabilities (verbal ability, abstract thinking, spatial reasoning etc), as they should be. Also, educational opportunities (gifted programs and such) are rarely (if ever) based on IQ tests, there are other types of tests for that.
Intelligence didn't make Rick miserable, Rick made Rick miserable.
He runs away from responsibility and avoids things that could have helped him. He bailed on his daughter for years and he avoided therapy that could have helped him and his family. There are plenty of average and below average intelligence people who do the exact same things Rick does just in a less flashy/showy way. IQ only alters how creative you are with avoiding help and improvement.
Or like you say, people who join a society like Mensa probably do so to gain the bragging rights, and so might be driven so much to join entirely optional societies designed mainly to make its members feel special might have a higher rate of depression because they don't have a strong level of internally produced self-esteem. So they strive for these status symbols only to find once they achieve them that they're kind of meaningless, and return to seeking reassurance from the yet to be obtained?

I don’t like psychology because of my personal experience with it. The psychologist said that I was bound to be a criminal because of my background history. He generalized me with my profile; fatherless minority.
Instead of helping me emotionally, he found that it was best to send me to a psychiatrist and dope me up with all kinds of drugs: adderall , Xanax, etc. Not a good experience. Luckily I stopped taking them before I got addicted. Want to know why theirs a drug crisis in America? It’s thanks to mass depression and big Pharma paying off psychiatrists and psychologists.

This is one of the major reasons why Rick and Morty is so popular at the moment. The audience are lead to feel as intelligent as Rick and in a way relate to his poor mental health. Feeling smarter than everyone is isolating which is often a big part of depression. It's that 'seeing things for how they are' and not wanting to spread the bad vibes type of deal. But in a way its also bullshit, just as the current second top comment on this video states "Being Smart is only Miserable when you're not smart enough to know that since it doesn't matter, be happy instead" (Jo King). You have to take absurd in stride, no, none of this bullshit universe makes sense, you're smart enough to see this, now push yourself that bit further to see that means absolutely fuck all in relation to your own sense of overall peace or happiness, create 'meaningless' goals, achieve them, fall for the satisfaction, we live in a universe that makes no sense, so wheres the sense in feeling miserable over trying find any intrinsic meaning.

I don't think this depression is necessarily connected to the feeling of a lack of intrinsic meaning in life. It can be just that smarter people tend to notice on every turn how fucked up society can be, how unfair things are, how selfish and evil humans are, how we destroy everythng around us and don't give a single fuck. If you're also a sensitive person it can be depressing. Also I don't think you can control your depresion by being smart. I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that.

I think you missed the point of my comment Josiah. It was to highlight that assumed intelligence leading to isolation or depression is actually quite stupid. I think a lot of fans relate to Rick because of this assumed intelligence and also justify some pretty shitty behaviours with this mentality. It's a kind of poor mental health fuelling narcissism. Whats sadder than people attempting to make intelligent comments online is people screen-capping them, cropping them, uploading them and linking them to a subreddit for other peoples milliseconds of boredom fuelled ridicule. Don't be afraid to try to have actual discussions online rather than standing on the sidelines ridiculing those participating.
I don't think it is intrinsically connected but it the same way as the topics you mentioned it can just open your eyes to the worlds shittiness, one of these shitty things being the intrinsically meaningless state of our universe. I think being smart enough to become aware of the horrible parts of life is a useful tool, it pushes you to create positive change, and where you can't, why feel bad about it? The tool of depression and awareness becomes useless so is is pointless to dwell and feel negative without any reason to do so. Easier said than done of course, but a good practice to have.

One problem with your premise, happiness is subjective. There is no way to measure if you're more joyful than your friend because you're proud of yourself for being able to pick a movie apart and understand what makes it good and bad as well as what parts specifically speak to you or your friend is more joyful than you because they feel nothing but enjoyment while watching a movie they mostly don't understand. There is also no way to swap places to see if the person picking apart the movie would even be slightly entertained if they couldn't pick apart the movie or if understanding what makes it good would ruin it for the other. A similar problem to overeager self-diagnosis, happiness is entirely subjective.
Not to mention the fact that all polls or questionnaires require the statement of how happy they are and not a measurement of such. There is an expectation when answering questions of what you're supposed to say, given when you think of whatever social structure you most identify yourself by. For example, religion is supposed to make you happy therefore you are more likely to lie on a poll that you're happy if you're religious and unhappy than someone who doesn't have that expectation placed on them. They think they should be so they say they are.
Even with all that said, happiness is something that is ridiculously difficult to measure even conceptually. What I think of as happiness looks like depression to my family while their lives seem miserable to me because I wouldn't enjoy their lives and they wouldn't enjoy mine. I could write a poll designed to tell if you're happy by my standard and they would all test out as depressed and vice versa.

The depression described here isn't caused by intelligence or the capability of comprehending the pointlessness in life, Rick stays in depression because he chooses to be jaded, he chooses to not seek healing or fulfillment, he chooses not to be vulnerable in relationships. He could've found happiness using his intelligence and inventions to safe lives, he could've found meaning in being a part of his grandkids' lives, but he chooses to dismiss that and declare these things have no meaning. He could've cured cancer for millions of children and helped those families, he is so jaded that he would say there is no meaning to saving children. That's on him. It's not due to his high intelligence. He's self destructive.

I think I would always rather feel too much rather than nothing at all. They say ignorance is bliss but a blissful existence almost seems like a wasted one. When you think about depression, sometimes it feels like you're so sad you're dying, but if I could cure it instantly I wouldn't want to. I actually have been to rehab, twice in my life for two different substances. It only works if you really want to quit. And I have quit several chemicals that I used to do, but I did it on my own, not because of rehab or detox facilities.

Also, your assessment is only partially correct, Teddy Couch. There are a myriad of different variables in measuring intelligence, and the scale you mentioned is one of many. For example: On an IQ test administered by the school, when I was in 3rd grade, I received an IQ score of 130, and the administrators claimed 140 was the 'genius' level. However, on dozens of other IQ tests I've taken over the years, my scores range from 145-183, and I surely don't feel like I'm really that far above the 'genius' level (approx 37% more than those at the threshold of 'genius', or 130). I suffer from chronic major depressive disorder (a large part of which is existential depression), was recently diagnosed as bipolar (though it could be my overexcitability which causes me to be very passionate about some subjects, and generally too intense or serious for most people's comfort), and was diagnosed with ADD as a child. I have received 'professional help', both voluntarily and involuntarily, many times, but the state funded mental healthcare is choked with red tape and lack of funds, resulting in incompetent and/or just lazy "doctors" and other staff, as well as limiting the medications these facilities can provide, regardless of whether or not a patient might actually need it (such as Valium; which for me, doesn't "mess me up" or make me "high", it just makes me feel content and damn near joyful, for a short while). So, to come full circle, yes, drug abuse is what many intelligent people resort to in order to cope with their own hyper-aware, yet bleak and hopeless little worlds. Personally, now I just prefer the best organic drugs on Earth; the "sticky icky" plants, as Snoop Dogg would say.
Inteligence is a unique capability of humanity it can be used in many different ways, the problem comes when is only used in a cold, nihilistic, deontologist way. Rationality makes you happy when is in service of humanism(compassion, caring for others, etc). So is not that simple as if you are smart you are miserable.

It should be fairly obvious that a kind, caring person desiring the best for others would get depressed in such a situation, should they be intelligent enough to understand this. A third misconception here is your association of rationality and high intelligence. This is rather minor, and may be a bit of nitpicking on my part, admittedly. Intelligence doesn't have any relevance toward rational or irrational thoughts. A genius may be just as capable of irrational thought as rational thought. The same is true for dunces. The negative connotations surrounding your use of nihilism and deontological ethics suggest a misunderstanding of these concepts as well. Deontological ethics is merely the idea that action is more important than results, and the intent is more important than the event. Essentially, this is the idea that says negligent homicide is not as evil as actively slaughtering innocent people on purpose. Nihilism itself, you seem to understand the concept, however have drawn inaccurate conclusions about it. Nihilism is neither positive nor negative on its own, this depends on the mindset of the person with those nihilistic beliefs. A person who needs their life to have meaning, who needs to be important in some regard, will obviously be quite unhappy when exposed to nihilistic ideals that suggest life has no meaning. A person without such needs won't be so negatively affected. However, I do find your final conclusion to have merit. Being smart doesn't make you miserable, that's all in the mindset of the individual.

Never thought about it like that, but I think it's instructive to note that, as Rick observes, Jerry achieved his relationship with said soulmate (I'm using your term though I disagree with the very premise of such) by preying on her merciful empathy, which is a tactic I consider dispicably manipulative. I would personally prefer a relationship built on mutual trust, respect and affection that, with the collaboration of both parties, elevates the participants to a new and enlightening level of self actualization; this paradigm is distinctly subverted by Jerry and Beth's failed marriage which is punctuated by deep insecurities, ambivalence to a partner's wants and needs, severe and lasting disregard for a partner's emotional wellbeing and an uncertainty if the union was even voluntary i.e. did we get married just because we got pregnant. Given all this, I think it dubious that we could even term the two as soulmates to begin with, and I think that any real world analogy of Jerry should take a long, critical look at how they conduct their interpersonal and romantic relationships, as few of the fictional character's tendencies could be considered healthy, let alone contributable to a successful marriage.

One question still bugs me. How to measure if someone is smart or not? And what does it mean do be smart? Is their a clean definition out there?
I think it isnt the best way to measure someones intelligence by some kind of test. We should measure it by their action or how they respond to certain situations or problems. A smart person would do less dumb things.

Senpai intelligence is strictly subjective. You can be smart in math, but dumb in art and vice versa. Also a test of one’s intelligence on a certain subject is usually done by placing them in hypothetical problems where this specific piece of intellect is needed.
Intelligence is ones ability to understand, remember, and extrapolate data from the world. How one measures that is pretty difficult to do, especially as most tests tend to focus on ones ability to remember or retain information, but its not impossible to do either. The other issue is that in the regular world "Intelligence", "Smarts", and "Brains" are used _very_ loosely, which tends to make it difficult to agree on a single definition, which is honestly why we don't have a concrete answer to these kinds of questions, because we keep moving the goalposts.
Take the humble bragging of me for example, I tend to think I'm pretty smart, but if you ask me to remember your name after talking to you for 10 minutes I will have forgotten it. Ask me to solve a Differential equation and I will somehow end up with the exact opposite of what you want. If you ask me to analyze a problem and come up with a reasonable solution however, I can usually come up with something that is logically and physically(?) sound.
First of all being smart and being intelligent are two different things. Secondly intelligent people did and do some pretty dumb stuff throughout history. They just tend to come up with the idea to do so faster. Intelligence is just like a fast computer. But you can do a lot of dumb stuff with a fast computer just faster than with a slow one. :)

Intelligence is something one has from the day they are born and that won't change except of tragic events like f.e. accidents lowering it. Being smart is a skill and can be developed and trained. I worked with people with severe cognitive disabilitys. Thats like the "other end" of Intelligence to mensa (speaking generally). If you met these people I worked with you would agree that a) they were/are not 'intelligent' but b) most of them were/are pretty 'smart'.

It is comparing the joy of a baby being tickled, with the feeling one hopes to have just before dying. You hope that you've done everything you needed to and it's all ok. Qualitatively, they are very different.
"Ignorance is bliss" is a stupid saying, while true for certain types of knowledge, ignorance can certainly be very damaging and at times even life threatening. I think it works best as a joke, not as a general statement about the nature of being.

I don’t wish to sound like a pseudo intellectual straight out of r/iamverysmart but I would wholeheartedly wish to be a rick over a jerry ANYDAY. People around me have told me I’m supposedly very intelligent but I have enough self awareness to realize my crippling mistakes that are my lack of wisdom and general laziness and if I participate in the cruel optimism that is my interest in existentialism with the double whammy that is OCD, I feel as if I’m on the verge of killing myself 24/7. Still, I would rather be omniscient and be completely devoid of happiness than be stupid and blissful.

In short, intelligence is a risk for reward system. Having above average intelligence correlates with heightened depressions and other sorts of poor emotions for a better chance to get more from life. Along the same vein having an average or below average intelligence correlates with "weaker" poor emotions with a lower chance to get as much from life. I love how many unknowns there are on how the human mind works.
Being smart doesn't make you miserable, being a perfectionist and radical reductionist does. I think it's a social issue: people who call themselves intellectuals define themselves by their relentless pursuit of knowledge above all else. But viewing yourself as a meat puppet and neglecting all your emotional needs as meaningless obstacles in the way of intellectual pursuits is basically self-flagellation. And it's hard to stop that thought pattern because if you slow down to care for yourself you're not pursuing knowledge, which to some means that you're not truly an intellectual because you're not devoting 110% of your effort into "worthwhile" pursuits. For lack of a better word, it's toxic. However it is definitely possible to be smart and satisfied, you just have to let go of "being smart" as your single defining trait.

To everyone thinking that IQ isn't a good predictor for success, well that's just plain false. There is undeniable evidence that there's a strong correlation between IQ and financial success. Of course you can find odd examples, where someone intelligent is poor and someone dumb is very rich, but that's just circumstanstial evidence.
More than anything, the reverse is true. Social status and success determines IQ. People in a higher social class are much more likely to have had caring parents, with healthy eating habits and educational attention, thus increasing IQ potential at birth. The problem, is that generations of people in higher social classes are much more likely to stay in their own class.

People who think they know everything,irritate those of us who do.
Common sense would dictate that narcissists fall into the upper portion of intelligence levels considered average, or toward the lower end of the scale. A legitimately intelligent individual would have the logical capacity to understand that personal capacities and self-worth are unrelated concepts. Being a narcissist would likely mean the individual's life experience indicates to themselves that they are "better" than most people, suggesting either a delusional view of their own past in general, or at least being slighly above average. Self-delusion is a decidedly ignorant path, thus it's safe to say that a person following that path would be of lesser intelligence.
I know that none of this really had anything to do with IQ, but I figured actual intelligence was a more fitting metric for the discussion. That being said, there is a distinct difference between perceived narcissism and actual narcissism, which effectively invalidates any possible "scientific" method of testing for this particular issue. With uncertainty introduced on whether the individuals tested are narcissists, or simply have personalities not understood properly by those doing the testing, the test itself becomes both pointless and inaccurate.
Squim IQ isn't a good way of testing intelligence. Mathematical competence maybe, but that's about it.

I asked about IQ because I don't think "intelligence" has a universal definition, so it's a little wiggly to talk about. As I've seen it, it's usually ascribed to someone as a compliment to mean "they did something difficult which required thought commendably." Someone might be called intelligent for solving a difficult math problem or logic puzzle, but be very poor at social interactions. Conversely, con artists are often called "highly intelligent" for their manipulative ability, but there's no reason to expect they would be particularly good at math.
