What made Winx interesting was 1- the girls friendship 2- The fashion 3- The cool futuristic weapons the men had because they don't have powers 4- The plot about Bloom and her lost sister, Bloom trying to find out who she is and who her sister is. NONE of those things were in the show, NONE!!!
It was really fun in my opinion i assume the books are obviously better but it was a lot of fun too watch frankly I burst out laughing like 5 times cause the characters were so dumb.
I grew up with a 4kids version. This is when it first came out. When they changed the voices, I hated it because I thought the 4kids dubbing of their voices were better and I still do.
The way Dylan was able to write the Winx storyline better than the actual writers by having Bloom go into an uncontrollable power trance and the girls needing to converge their abilities to defend themselves while Musa, the mind fairy, is the one who ultimately reaches her, and then that's what leads to them all becoming friends. I love this! 🌈
@@oddiek Exactly, that's another reason why this story thread would work, because obviously Fate is doing an earlier exploration of Dark Bloom in a sense by showing how imperative it is for her to be in control of her emotions, otherwise bad things happen to the people she cares about, and clearly Rosalind is hoping to, quite literally, fuel the fire. 🔥
As someone who grew up on Winx Club, this show made me SO MAD. They took away all the fun things of the show like the friendship and the FASHION and the boys and girls having different tasks and the way they all acatually have personality traits and did nothing with it. They literally took all the good things away and brought nothing.
I loved in the original show that they broke down stereotypes. Like Stella is a spoiled princess but she’s a good person (and one of the reasons I love her character). She will always be there for the people she loves and cares about. And also I feel like most of them act like actual teenagers (not all the time but they live in a world of magic and this is from my memory). But from what I’ve heard and clips I’ve seen from the Netflix show, they are just all stereotypes (which there’s nothing wrong with that because the original show they use these stereotypes to make interesting characters). I also don’t like how Hollywood thinks mature is a movie being visually dark, but the original show had some pretty dark moments but was still a colourful show.
@@CourtneyMaria2 And bloom and Stella would die for each other. Stella literally lied and tried to sneak Bloom into Alfea. They always stood up for each other. The group too would go through anything for each other. They never needed the boys to save them and the boys knew the girls could hold their own. Heck, stella even saved Brandom from the one underground princess who forcefully wanted to marry him. The friendship was the core and netflix just murdered the show then jerked off on its corpse
Same! I am also so angry what they did to the original characters. Like for example they made "stella" actually mean and only had floras cousin?? (i loved flora so much as a child). I dropped the show after one episode.
I was pretty excited for the show and then I heard about Netflix's adaption and then what actually happened, I could not believe it (I mean I could because it's Netflix but still).
I loved the original and the Netflix show. But I was so mad when they waited till the last episode of season 2 for the Winx to get their wings. And then Netflix just cancelled it. And on a huge cliffhanger too.
Another reason that netflix is failing is because it will renew shows like this, but will cancel good shows after only 1 season, like Julie and the Phantoms. They won't really promote the shows that are good, and will cancel them, but will constantly promote these awful shows and renew them like instantly, it is so frustrating
Yes, like, I’m not okay with this and Society. I have no idea what they have done with Black Mirror, it was so popular and good but I guess they ran out of ideas. Édit: Good shows if they do come back sometimes take 2 years or more, why? Like I understand there was Covid but there was a few that came out way before and never got an additional season until 2-3 years later.
the most frustrating thing about the winx saga was the clothes. The cartoon had an amazing fashion design. Idk if Im happier about the likes or the 69 comments...
They completely missed the opportunity to use Y2K fashion which was (and still is) trending at the time, there has never been a better time to actually go crazy with the outfits and do them justice to the cartoon. I'm just imagining the amazing outfits we could have seen, it could have been a trendsetter like Euphoria honestly. Though no good outfit could have saved that show.
The coloring disparity in shadow and bone isn’t because of the change in directors, it’s because Nina is technically part of both worlds. It’s symbolizing the gradual merging of both groups.
Kaz's 'over the shoulder' shot gets even better if you are to consider that, as he begins to remove his gloves, the camera moves up and we never, not once, in the entire show, even get close to seeing his bare hands again. Which is kind of a big deal, considering that *the reason as to why Kaz wears gloves in the first place* is a big part of his character.
uhhh you should put a spoiler warning in your last line. some people might prefer to find out about that naturally through the books or tv series, otherwise it's less impactful
@@persephoneabbot9125 They do in the books. But Kaz and his gang are in a different series by the same author. “Shadow of the bone” is its own series separate from kaz, Casper, lnej, etc. they are just in the same universe/place so it works out that they would meet each other at some point
I love how he always laughs at his own sponsorship transitions. I just watched a video of his yesterday that he made two years ago and he laughed at his transitions then. The fact that the novelty hasn't worn off for him and he can still laugh at his transitions shows how much effort he puts into them.
As a woman, I really appreciate well crafted action sequences. It sucks that that filmmakers do such shoddy work with action, humor, and character development if they’re target audience is women
As soon as he said that Not Winx Club was geared towards women, that's an insult 😡. It's like having action scenes in a 'woman's' show is too 'masculine' 🙃. I get that most women are not into action stuff but some of us do appreciate it 😎
They didn’t even do a good job with the fashion, tho. It’s not the fact that its target audience is women, is just that they did not give a sht. There’s no love in this project, like, at all. It’s been made for the money and money alone. It has no soul
As a female, I am here for a good battle scene. Like, when I watch these fantasy shows I am here for a) world building b) learning how the combat works c) both of those things should come together so I can watch and epic show down.
@@someone3195 You're all about letting people use whatever words they want to use, right? Then let them use female. What's the problem? It's just a word, isn’t it? A word doesn't have to mean the thing it's defined to be. Why does it concern you so much what other people do. Individualism, right? Self expression? Freedom of speech? Not caring what other people think? That should apply to everyone, right? Where's that same treatment to OP? I can't believe you'd be hypocritical and have double standards, there's just no way. Why should you be entitled and control what someone refers to themself as? OPs valid and shouldn't let strangers bring them down for being who they are. If they want to use female I support them.
Hearing you discuss the problem with the specialists being trained with normal swords and weapons made me so mad at the show, because it reminded me that one of the main appeals of Winx was its technology. They had the coolest and most innovative weapon designs back then, adapting to each specialist fighting style, even their school (which was different from the Winx's one) and transportation was made to be futuristic. Winx was very technology-influenced and that was one of the things that set it apart from other fairy stories, yet they went ahead with their dark-academia and forest life thing that has been done a million times.
@@helenwinter3320 She was always one of my favourites, it's such a shame. But I guess she was spared from being butchered like all the other characters
@@lllinai Not to mention Aisha (I hope I got her name right). They made her into Bloom's sidekick. From what I remember of the cartoon, she was awesome! Shame they turned her into a token black character
The target audience being female doesn't mean action isn't needed and useless romance is justified. Nothing will make me drop a show faster than pointless relationships between any man and woman who breathe the same direction. I understand my view isn't how all women think, but the opposite is also true. There's not one standard all women would agree with. But I think what we all would agree on is that ''women love romance and hate spectacle'' is a tired stereotype that needs to go.
@@KristySki Why not both? Good romance can root a show's foundation. Take Berserk for example. An action anime, relying mostly on that, but the romance between Guts and Casca is what adds depth.
The colors between the Six and Shadows is because Six are introduced in Ketterdam, a dark dingy thief land and the Shadows are in Ravka, which is meant to be a more hopeful place for the magic users. It switches up with Nina because she's from Ravka but is from the Crow's books
I'll forever be mad at the makers of winx saga for ruining it like they did. the cartoon was flashy and extravagant and mature. they clearly had the chance to have a bright color palette with sparkly clothes n shit and like u said the friendship aspect taking directly from the source material. instead they "riverdaled" it, had the most fashionable character (stella) dress like a 40yo mom and not only have no friendships but also add in that unnecessary love triangle that nO ONE ASKED FOR!!! stella and bloom were best friends in the og cartoon. they absolutely RUINED this show right from the start. and this is apart from the bad writing, directing and acting. (sorry for my bad eng im not a native speaker)
Your English is good and I totally 100% agree with you. This is my third comment about this because I absolutely hate what they did. True and pure anger enters my heart every single time I see the show somewhere. My brother kept saying it was good and not to compare it to the original show. That was bull

Some other things Fate did wrong: - White washing Musa and Flora - Renaming Flora to Terra - No Techna - Combining Brandon and Sky into 1 character - Love triangle - Wardrobe in general I could keep going. Edit: Omg! Thank y’all for over 1k likes!
@@loraelizabeth7580 I never thought flora was white, simply because Stella, who tans and everything is still super white in the show. Which made me believe that Flora's darker skin was another ethnicity and not simply a tan.
@@loraelizabeth7580 yeah, i didn't think she was latina tho, i honestly thought she was black whoops. I guess for cartoons it's really hard to show ethicities just through looks alone. Especially when the characters of the show aren't from earth so techinically she's not 'latina' since she's from another planet. it's weird how that works tbh.
Dylan needs to understand that we , as a female watchers, also want to watch some quality fighting scenes lmao 😀 Im still mad at producers for not making winx with wings and not making them beat the shit out of 'burned ones' at sky 🤢
Right? Us women folk want great fight sequences too. It’s not a sex/gendered thing - it’s a people with good taste thing. Most people want good fight/battle sequences because it’s simply enjoying something created skilfully: like appreciating a beautifully cooked meal; or the architecture of a castle. Fucking hell liking battle scenes are not a male only thing, nor should they be created only with a male audience in mind. Just because the movie or tv show you’re creating is mostly targeted at a female teen audience does not mean you should slack off in that department. It also makes the writing and the characterisations look weaker when fight scenes are not well choreographed. I do wish more blokes would realize that us chicks like this stuff too. Because I mean… it’s having taste. It’s not like only women have taste buds and therefore like cake you know? It’s not like only men have eyes and therefore can appreciate landscaping.
One of the main reasons for me is inconsistency and unpredictability. Netflix loves to make good shows and cancel them after a season or two. That’s a lot of time to invest in something that you know will likely be cancelled. The only things that don’t seem to get cancelled are shows that are about sex.
@@fruitybooty663 Because they don't get the interest immediately or don't get the interest Netflix feels is enough. Thing is, a lot of shows become more popular after they've been out for a while but Netflix wants things to be instant hits and that's just not realistic for the amount of shows they put out. People only have so much time. They can't watch every show at once.
Fun fact Dylan the entire plot point you wanted to happen in Fate, about Bloom going beserk and the girls having to fight her, happened in season 2 of the original show. And yes it was awesome
Netflix should let Dylan write a show, he’s actually competent (unlike most of the Netflix writers). I’d love to see what Dylan would make with a budget and resources
Hear me out, Winx could definitely been made into a more mature and dark show while also staying true to the source material, why the burned ones? The Trix could be genuinely a menacing foe in a darker setting with them being descendants of the witches who ruined Blooms home world. There was so much potential there to go balls to the walls with the darker aspects, Bloom struggling with her identity and the loneliness of being the last alive and the survivor’s guilt of her sister giving her own life to save Bloom, also… Who the fuck is Terra?! Where my girl Flora?! Had a second thought, these people also wants us to believe they’ll give avatar justice…. No way in hell when you can’t even get magical girls right
Overall I liked the show, clearly not a lot because I didn’t argue with anything Dylan said about it but there was SO MUCH POTENTIAL THEY THREW AWAY. And for some reason it cheesed me that she wasn’t the only fire fairy, I mean the whole thing is her having the dragon flame- In traditional Winx style you couldn’t cast fire spells if you didn’t have it so whatever they’re planning is definitely changing everything
The thing is, the original show was DARK. We LITERALLY have the trix turn people into ash and attack the schools with an army of decaying flesh and rot like? Why didn’t y’all just go with that? Or focus more on the inter realms war with the ancient ones? Hell, Fate couldve been set in the past with Daphne and tell her story that ends with her death instead we got a basic try hard grim dark series that had zero budget. Also, Terra is Flora and no matter HOW MUCH fans try to deny it Terra is Flora. This season I’m gonna need Musa to reveal she stole someone else’s identity and she’s actually Darcy, Beatrix takes on the name Stormy, Terra transfers and Flora takes her place and Sam and Dane get demoted to recurring characters. I want my ACTUAL Winx characters.
@@mkwhite5054 100% agree! My friend worded what she thought of the show really well “I can like the show if I can pretend it’s not a retelling of winx and it’s a show on its own” which I think fits perfectly
@@rainedroses4291 yep exactly, I enjoyed the show until I’m reminded of just WHAT it is supposed to be and then I’m immediately annoyed like…? Y’all could’ve just made your own show? Or explored the next generation of the winx club with Roxy and the other newbies? Or hell, made a live action WoW but they chose NONE of the obvious options.
I'm sure they just used a script/concept for a original show and then edited the names so that they could market it as a Winx Club adaptation. There's just no way anyone familiar with the source material would've written this show.
Being fan of the books I couldn’t watch more than 3 episodes of the show because it was really bad compared to the books 😐 I wish they never mixed Grisha and Crows
@@adriana_cern yeah I was so confused what are crows doing in the grisha plot story. I mean if I remember correctly there was a notable time difference between the stories. I will never understand why they did that. They could have two good series but nooo mix them a made one mediocre/bad series.
I literally screamed when Dylan said he liked Shadow and Bone! It's a brilliantly made show with an exceptional soundtrack and an amazing cast. It also surprisingly stuck to books. I know we don't talk about recommendations here but I think you should read the six of crows duology! I have a feeling you won't be disappointed
It deviated from the books in all the right places. Like, the books never once give a full description of Alina (only that she has brown hair and a pallor complextion because she's sick from not using her powers), i think Bardugo left her intentionally as a blank slate so readers could imagine themselves as Alina. The netflix writers and casting making her Shu Han and having her struggle with discrimination added an extra layer to the character that was clearly lacking in the books
I've never read the book but I watched the series and it was amazing. Soo goodd. I wasn't into fantasy genre but this series was too good to drop. The characters were all so interesting and I love the "game of throny' change of povs to different characters. Is the book worth it to read?
As someone who read the entirety of the grishaverse series before Shadow and Bone came out, I can confidently say it was an amazing adaptation. It was super cool to see the world so many people fell in love with come to life.
Also: The original Winx Club show that appealed to pre teen and teen shows had super awesome action and fight scenes! Like literally! They were so fun! You had bondage by audio sensitive plants, diversion by using everyday objects to make music, they had voodoo dolls to stage a mock fight with Bloom, they had an inhumane army of death demons that didn't die no matter what. You had opponents stealing blooms powers. They had a fight were they defeated the villain by chanting a song! They had great individual fight choreography! Fate is disappointing no matter the gender.
Let's be real here they were adapting a cartoon to a live action i feel like if they made it too much like the original it would have be to predictable, I like this version. I loved the cartoon as a kid, however I'm much older now and something like this with a more dark tone speaks to me. And yes maybe they could have done more with the costumes as they were soo good in the animation but it would have been so cringe if they did the whole chant and transform thing. Back then yeah, I don't think so now
Also also it's kind of funny looking at all the bitter people in the comments who's show got cancelled lol. It's not that big a deal shows get cancelled all the time for numerous reasons, time to move on
Not to mention they took out Techna, changed Musa, and swapped out Flora - making any Winx connection practically unrecognizable. Techna’s powers actually wouldn’t have been too hard to adapt to a live action setting - just have it be similar to telepathy but using technology or the internet as a channel (akin to the Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, or Fringe to name a few examples). Kingdom Hearts 2 (a video game) was able to make that magic-tech combination pretty seamless with a data disc for Tron created by Cid and Merlin! It’s a shame because apparently a live action Winx adaptation has been the original creator’s dream for a long time.
Fate is just not Winx. They did what every live action movie usually does and just yeeted the plot and characters in to the void. Just the fact that they did not introduce the same dynamics and villains and decided to make it a shadow hunter the series rip off is kind of embarrassing.
@@19Rena96 Throughout the episodes I somehow forgot that it is supposed to be WINX because it was so not winx-like. It was okay-ish and I wanna watch the second season. But they should have just made a different series and not a Winx series that basically has nothing to do with Winx. Cause that just sucks.
To put things in prospective, AWAE got cancelled before Covid. That's 3 years ago, and people still cry about it on the internet. That just goes to show, Netflix hasn't had anything come out that's good enough to overcome the loss.
For me it was the fact that Netflix remove Sherlock Holmes series like its my comfort series you all gonna remove it just like that f u i am cancelling my subscription lol
One of the things that really annoys me about The Winx Saga is that they didn’t have to go for the Riverdale vibe to make the show darker. The source content has full on battles, an entire planet was killed, the girls were literally fighting for their lives every other episode. The only thing they needed to do was actually have a person die every now and then or actually show injuries in the show and add in some swear words to make it less kid friendly. The source material had some really dark plot lines to go with, it was right there and the creators of the The Winx Saga totally ignored it. Another thing was the fashion in the show. They were dressing like house wives on a reality show. This show could’ve been like Gossip Girl where trends were inspired by the show and there could’ve been some really cool moments. It was the perfect show to let creativity with fashion fly. A lot of people would’ve flocked to the show had the clothing been a lot better simply because there’s a lot of people that love fashion but all of the looks they actually used were either boring or ugly or both. There’s other things that bother me about the show like dropping some main characters, changing the ethnicities of some of the girls, and the lack of friendship which was super important in the show. It was an all around mess of a show.
Amidst the trash Netflix has been producing lately, Heartstopper was really a surprise! I've never liked the whole teen coming of age genre but oh boy this show was absolutely adorable! The impeccable cast, soundtrack, cinematography, diversity, authenticity to the book, it left me feeling warm and hopeful!! The break that we all deserved!
yes I LOVE heartstopper, but if they don't renew it, i'm going to be so mad but also sadly not that surprised since netflix has a tendency to cancel actual quality shows, even if they are popular
I binged the whole season yesterday and for the first time EVER skipped back to watch all the cute and funny scenes again. Everything about it was honest and really well made 😍
I personally think SOC is darker and grittier than Peaky Blinders, which is the closest show I can even think of that matches the vibe of SOC. Kaz is very similar to Thomas Shelby, even looks like a younger version of him, in my head and in the show. There were points while reading the duology that I had to stop and double check the age rating for SOC, not because that is something that applies to me, but simply because I could not believe that a book this gruesome and dark wasn't rated 18+. Like the Hunger Games, if they included everything from the books into the show, it would probably have to be aired on HBO. The best yet shortest book series I have ever read.
@@FANGRUNlN I wish, but that would definitely feel way out of place with the current vibe of the show. A shift would definitely have to occur. I feel bad for Freddy, having to hold back on playing the character he himself knows and adores. Netflix should just let him be Brekker by Brekker. Brick by Brick.
bestie, females want battle scenes. I want blood, I want tears, sweat and DEATH. As a female, I demand justice for the battle scenes directed at a female audience!
The coloring crossover/mixup in episode 3 of S&B actually makes sense with some context! Nina (known here fondly as Beatrice) is a character established in Six of Crows (warm tones), but she is native to the country the main character is in with the shadow fold (neutral tones) and is also Grisha (has powers, would be in the same part of the army as mc if she wasn’t currently……on a lil detour from her duty we’ll say lmao.) In the show storyline she was also meant to be the (six) crows’ ~connection~ to get them into the little palace aka Darkle’s Castle aka land au neutral so her character intro literally represented one side venturing into the other! Not sure if needing all of that context to understand it makes it incredibly dense or incredibly clever but as someone who read the books it felt clever lol. The directors may change every 2 episodes, but they definitely put in work together to try and keep that cohesive visual story going!!
From what I've taken from most ya/general book adaptions is the only way it's actually going to be good is if you get the creator of the original material involved. Leigh Bardugo (shadow and bone) and Alice oseman (heartstopper) both had hands on the writing of both of the adaptions of their shows, which is why i think they're just so above and beyond other adaptions out there at the moment
I think what makes this true is that you have someone that is really passionate about the project driving it forward. The content is the writer's baby, so they won't settle for less. Versus some director coming into a project that's already established, not to mention TV execs make the decisions and don't know anything about good TV. They have a product they know people will consume, why not do it on a lower budget? Who cares who directs it if the content is what draws people in? We'll make money regardless.
bro the fact that they were scared to basically stick to the original material in some sense is annoying. The cartoon had fashion, friendship, love, and battles a show targeted toward girls that ended up with a very successful saga. because girls love battles too just add in some so great clothes and were set. the show was colorful and sparkly even in the serious scene but somehow kept the mood. Netflix seems to know only how to direct semi-decent romcoms and super dark-themed shows like ughhh. it was so triggering being excited to watch this and then look at the final product... sorry for my venting lol
Right??? Like let us having something FUN! The original series was so girly and vibrant but in the best way possible, the fairies could fight, they fought to further their powers while still rocking ADORABLE outfits in a vibrant, sparkly and fun environment. Netflix seems to think teens nowadays only appreciate depressing, dark and gloomy stuff, and it's so infuriating
They wanted to make a edgy YA show so badly. They could’ve just adapted the original series but made it more mature. Or even more they could’ve adapted WITCH which has a darker story anyway
Maybe I have horrible taste in tv shows but I found it enjoyable to watch, if it’s a remake or reboot idc if it stays to the original source material it just needs to have some elements of the original with their own plot line and then have a good vision with good writing. Fate, I understand did mess up on a lot of things but as the target demographic which I honestly regret being ngl, I enjoyed it. Now for season 2 the creator did say after seeing the first season he will be joining for the second season and fixing all the problems he saw I think, can’t remember clearly, and Flora is coming plus she’s Latina so you know going to watch it and see if it’s going to live up to the potential that I saw.
Exactly! And my thing is this: in the show, the girls were best friends through everything since day one. Stella wasn't a bitch, all of them had they're unique powers, and though they had their disagreements, they were still together. There was no insider drama or anything. This crap show didn't even bother to have all of the original characters or give them their original powers. Musa is supposed to have musical powers, not sense emotion. They botched this show, it was my childhood and I will forever hold hate in my heart for it every time I see it! Sorry for my rant.
Leigh Bardugo, the autor is involved in the making of S&B series, I think that's a big reason why this is a good adaptation. They really get the vibe of the books, this eastern european, steampunk-ish thing. The filming locations really fit (I recognized almost all hungarian locations :D). Also I read Cursed, I hated it, it was messy and the plot was all over the place for me.
I just remembered that in the book, the Darkling’s (alleged) ancestor who created the Shadow Fold was called the Black Heretic. Calling him the Darkling was like people calling him “the devil’s grandkid.”
I think the hues of the six’ world changed because they weren’t in Ketterdam anymore but in Ravka … so the warm hue wasn’t because of them but the place
Shadow and Bone is genuinely the best fantasy show I have ever watched, I think it is definitely the best adaptation on Netflix. Personally, (at least from season 1) it might even be better than the books (and I'm talking about the Shadow & Bone trilogy here, not the Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom- those 2 are masterpieces). Just the cinematography, the screenplay, the brilliant casting choices
2:22 Just hearing him explain each of the “Winx” club character powers makes me cry 😭. As a fan of the OG Winx Club series, I’m flabbergasted and deeply disappointed at what they’ve done. OG Bloom has fire powers but she never knew she had them until she accidentally meets Stella. Stella is the blonde. She’s also a princess who’s powers are light. Musa’s powers are music. Flora is the nature fairy. Techno is the technology fairy. Girls can have powers but the guys can’t. When Dylan was wondering why the guys are training with swords, it’s because boys don’t have magic. AND, Alfea (Winx school) and Redfountain (Specialists’/boys’ school) are different. They do not go to the same school 😭😭😭😭
To add to the whole "Six" vs "Shadow" film aesthetics, the directors also made a decision that the camera movement in the Six side more dynamic. The Six side definitely has a lot more pans and stuff.
I was about to say that I normally respect others people's opinions on movies and shows, you like what you like, right? But when Dylan put shadow and bone in the vicinity of fate and cursed, I was like: I don't respect that!!! AND THEN HE SAID HE LIKED SHADOW AND BONE AND I SCREAMED! So I'm going to respect Dylans opinion.
seriously I was scared that he thought it was bad like the books are amazing and this is the first time I’ve seen a book turned to a movie or show becoming pretty accurate to the book
same..... But I also thought: "Hmm, if he didnt like it, there must be something strong...... Dylan cant not like this... curious to know what he'd find"
I was ready to fight about my love for Shadow and Bone when i saw the title, and then Dylan made everything right by saying it is indeed a great show ! You scared me there !
Hahahajajja SAMEEEE i was about to throw hands and I skipped all the way to where he talks abt shadow and bone all ready to fight anything he said but then he said he really liked it so I was happy and relieved😅
I hate what they did to winx. It would've been an okay show on its own but no, they had to make an adaptation and ruin Stella. And let me not get started on the fashion.....just no.
I think the color of the shots you're talking about is not to differentiate the story line but to differentiate where the characters are. All the warmer shots you are talking about are in the ketterdam (Kerch) while the more neutral ones are in ravka. So the scene with Beatrice (Nina) is neutrally colored because the crows is already in ravka. (This is a maybe. I'm not the showrunner. They may actually fucked that up idk)
no youre right, as soon as they get to ravka. the coloring is the same, he must have missed the little card that pops up and says the crows arrived in ravka
im so glad dylan enjoyed s&b also im pretty sure when the director changed the colours in the shots changing to less warm colours was because the 'six' were now in the same country as the 'shadows'... thats why the shots were more cold
Another reason Netflix is failing: LITTLE TO NO MARKETING!!!!! It took way too long for me to hear about Shadow and Bone - long enough that i don't think my views counted towards Netflix's 28 day range they use to see how successful a show is. Shadow and Bone really needs to be hyped up more - it is so underrated
Yeah same, didn't know about the series until I accidentally stumbled upon it while googling the books... The Netflix algorithm is super weird anyways, if you look for recently added stuff it oftenly doesn't show you everything new, many good movies or series you can't find unless you know what you are looking for beforehand.
Honestly I think they’re just very strategic. If you look at Bridgerton and Ebola Holmes they marketed the shit out of them so they know when to do it. Maybe they just don’t want to tire their audience. Also for shadow and bone specific the reader demographic was YA and very tapped in so I think they knew they could rely on them. Same with heartstopper. Young and niche/fan audiences will almost do the marketing for them
@@maeve6363 Idk since the characters were all aged up for the TV show it can cater to the fantasy crowd as well as the YA. I think I eventually saw it after watching the Magicians (also aged up characters from highschooler going to college to be graduates instead). I still think more marketing is necessary
I think the reason “Beatrice” (her name is actually Nina) starts out with the shadow side colors but then is involved with the crows is because she lives in the in between. She’s a spy from the shadow-side but *spoiler* will become a “six”
@@recoveringintrovert717 lol, don’t worry it’ll make sense when we get to the Six of Crows part of the storyline/Show. It’s just a little hint shown before that. Fun fact, the producer signed up to adapt the Six Of Crows story (cause he was a huge fan of that plot, but he got Shadow and Bone’s trilogy) so he made it so that the Six of Crows characters are also in the Shadow and Bone as a prequel (since they are both set in the Grisha verse and the events of Six of Crows in the books come after Shadow and Bone)
I got real nervous when you included Shadow and Bone in your thumbnail, but then I saw the whole video and went "oh thank god" lol. This show has been my comfort show since it came out and now I'm 2 books down (I have the whole trilogy + six of crows duology + the wolves duology). I'm soooo glad to have found the show!
Same. In my head I was thinking, "I really didn't enjoy, and couldn't even finish Winx or Cursed... but I loved Shadow and Bone". Glad to know I'm not the only one hah.
yess sameee, i rlly loved the show.i actually only found out about the books because of the show, i just finished six of crows and LOVED it.i can't wait for season 2
Everything that The Winx Club was best for (fight sequences, fashion, friendships, world building, characters), the Netflix series said ‘no’ TO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.
Netflix used to have everything, and there was so much hype for every show they created. Now they took a lot of really good shows off and replaced it with horrible original shows that are just not really good. There are only a handful of things on Netflix I’d like to see, and it is SOOO expensive. They release seasons all at once and have no ads, so that’s good, but they don’t have a monopoly over the industry anymore. There are more streaming services offering similar styles and more benefits for a fraction of the price. I can get hulu, Disney plus, & hbo for under the price of a Netflix subscription and still have some to spare. I’m just not sure if it’s worth it anymore.
Netflix had the benefit of being the leader of streaming and they even had the foresight to start creating their own original programming. But they royally fu*ked up by canceling too many of their fan favorite series. And honestly I think it’s a bad thing that they release their seasons all at once. This prevents shows from being in the spotlight with weekly new episodes up to 2 to 3 months like Apple TV+ and Hulu, instead they drop a season and people consume it over a weekend then you don’t hear about it for another year. They still have a huge advantage and I’m not counting them as down and out by any means, but they need to make serious changes FAST if they don’t want to get swallowed by the competition.
If I had my own netflix I would have cancelled it long ago. They just cancelled one too many good shows and made on too many reality shows. Also they keep renewing shows that used to be good and make crappie new seasons that everyone hates. It just isn't worth it anymore.
Releasing the entire season all at once is actually a terrible thing for netflix. They hardly market their work and could benefit so much from weekly fan made contet, discussions and word of mouth
@@feli3051 What show’s are you referring to that are getting renewed but it’s getting worse? When you say “reality” tv, do you mean any show that isn’t fictional? As in lumping are you lumping the baking, cooking, dating, true crime, real estate, and travel shows together?
I didn't know the prices were so different from country to country. Where I live the prices are as follows: Netflix = Hulu = HBO+Prime ; and Disney+ is in between, cheaper than Netflix but more expensive than HBO. It's common for people to buy the "family" packages and share with friends/family members who live in different houses, so it gets really cheap. To put things in perspective, a month of Netflix costs about the same as 13kg of rice, or 2 McDonalds meals, so even though it's one of the most expensive it's still quite cheap.
I don't know whats with this obsession of making YA shows so dark. I would love some light fantasy stuff too. I wish they made the Winx remake as a light adventure with a focus on friendship (as close to the original). I loved that show as a kid and the remake was such a disappointment😞
@@rosesweetcharlotte yeeessss. and listen, i don't _hate_ the idea that they don't get their full fairy, shiny, bedazzled, different-costume transformations. but like even their regular outfits were bland af. like ohhh give the fire-element character RED outfits, the earth-element character GREEN outfits (and not even in a thematic, motif kind of way. they literally just gave Bloom pretty much full-red outfits??? her identity is just red. this isn't Cheryl Blossom deliberately carving a visual of herself being a red bombshell in a campy teen show and the writers heavily leaning onto to her Rich Queen Bee trope smh.) i feel like Miranda Presley, looking at the outfits and deadpanning "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking." anyway i digressed. what i mean is fine, take out the bedazzled fairy costumes, but maybe. just maybe. still keep to their original outfit motifs and, idk, be _interesting???_ ngl the fact that they kept out the fairy costumes but still had to give Bloom her "transformation" sequence that amounted nothing more to swirling flames and flame wings is. so. funny in hindsight. all that build-up and for nothing?? it could've actually been kinda epic if the flame wings erupted from her back from a sudden, instinctive power awakening and power boost, and idk, MORE FLAMES. fucking ring of fire, i don't mind. the visuals could've still been epic without the original aesthetic but they didn't even tryyyyy.
Shadow and Bone is really good I first watched it for Ben Barnes but all the cast are amazing as well especially Kaz Brekker I think he's my favourite honestly I can't wait for season 2
12:55 As a female I'd like to confirm that in a fantasy show, there's nothing more entertaining than just a well-coordinated gory battle sequence. Give me some action and blood and vengeance YES.
As also a female, yeah obviously (also the word female makes me cringe so much, bc I associate it with incels or “nice guys”😬 Not saying that everyone who says it is one but still😆)
I mean given how popular the poppy war is and so many other fantasy books like it, you’ve really got to question the logic of assuming women don’t care about that stuff
Right?! Honestly there are few series/movies I can think of where the level of action put off/drove away female audiences, and it is mainly franchises with little to no storyline (like A team, the merchenaries and F&F). If anything shows with a female target are like-so because of a lack of interest from the male counterpart rather than a preference from women of certain genres
shadow and bone is criminally underrated, it has all the chops to be the next big thing and yet somehow ... it didn't?? JUSTICE FOR SHADOW AND BONE !!!
@@checksanity Im not talking about the second season? as it stands shadow and bone is not talked about much at all apart from the core fandom, it never really achieved mainstream popularity nor did attract discussion on social media. im hoping it'll gain recognition as season 2 comes though :D
@@samgrey2407 Most likely because the fandom didn't talk about it enough, and netflix didn't advertise the show. The only way someone would have known about it is through hersay or it being shown on the newsfeed on netflix and that in itself is not a garauntee that it gets watched. If the show's fandom started to make a bunch of memes and start talking about it than it probably would recieve more interest.
I get that they wanted to age up the show and make it more "edgy" but Winx had so many elements to it that they could have used instead they turned it into the next Riverdale. The outfits are just bad. Euphoria did a much better and that show isn't even a fantasy series so how tf? All the characters just got assassinated terribly Bloom went from the kind cinnamon roll hot head that was trying to figure out who she was to edgy mean overpowered generic main protagonist girl. Also Bloom's color is blue which worked so well with her red hair but the writers couldn't even see that and threw red on her. Stella went from fashion diva who was kindhearted yet also dealing with divorced parents and being Bloom's bsf to generic mean girl put in a love triangle. Aisha doesn't even have a personality except being a babysitter for Bloom's shit. The romance also pisses me off. Winx had interesting romance but now they just always gotta add romance drama in these kind of shows Also where is Tecna????!
Shadow and Bone surprised me, I actually really liked it and immediately bought the books. The idea of the Fold is just so interesting, and also Ben Barnes as the Darkling whew.
Right? I really felt the seductive pull into his "side" of opulence and celebrity that the main character must have felt. She went from starving and dirty to parties and fame and a hot and powerful famous dude as a potential romantic/battle partner. It all sounds so enticing... till you find out who he really is, then it all comes crashing down.
I really loved S&B as well. But honestly, I was more interested in the Six of Crows storyline. I read the Six of Crows after watching the show, and I gotta say, mixing the S&B storyline with SOC was a mistake. SOC was like reading a book version of Peaky Blinders, except its better than Peaky Blinders and darker in many ways. S&B by comparison feels like a Disney Channel Original movie. They clearly have and will continue to water down the grittiness that is SOC. They already solved Inej's indenturement issue without even getting into what the Managerie really is and what she had to do for Heleen. There is also no mention of Per Haskell so far, which means Netflix will likely gloss over what could be the best (non DC/ Marvel universe) fight scene in the last decade. The casting for SOC was spot on in my opinion though, and all the SOC characters' personalities are still intact despite show Kaz, Inej, and Jes being softer than in the books. I don't blame the softness on Freddy, Amita, or Kit though. This was a writing choice on Netflix's part, to make the characters less jarring when paired side-by-side with the S&B Disney characters.
@@rationalcynic8416, I don't think they'll do that in the second season. This was just to establish the crows, but all the ugly and gruesome details will be saved for the second season. There are still a lot of characters in the SOC universe that are not introduced because it's not their time yet. Some people say they might split the two books into two shows now that it has been established. However, mixing SOC and S&B together was a smart move. SOC is more widely known than S&B, and better liked. Had S&B been released as a stand-alone show, the ratings wouldn't have been as high, and we might've never had the chance to actually see the crows. And we need to show the S&B world to know what the hell is going on so we can't just skip to SOC. Many people who didn't read S&B and skipped to SOC were so confused because the world is so complex and was not yet established to them and the language. If they leave out all those gory moments, people aren't going to be happy, and I don't think Leigh will let that happen. She knows what made SOC so popular, and it was because of its dark moments.
As a person who loved the original Winx club I was so disappointed to see how white washed the live action show was. I have only seen clips of the show due to my hesitation to watch the show I have found nothing compelling me to do so as most of the writing and directing seems to fall flat in all the scenes I have seen. Fate has nothing the original has from some of the main characters being absent from the show to even the fashion. Honestly they should've just made it a completely different show
@@sariica yes, and in this instance it means when in the original source material certain characters were poc but when the new show was made they cast white actors for those roles that were supposed to be poc. this in turn takes away jobs from minority actors. (i am not blaming the actors, but the casting directors and those in charge of making those decisions).
I loved the Six of Crows and Grisha series as a kid and was scared to watch the show in case it was bad but now I cannot wait to watch it, thanks Dylan
Nina was never meant to be plus sized she was always described as curvy in the books. Jesper, on the other hand, was in the books supposed to be dark-skinned and was whitewashed in the show so if you wanna complain about something complain about that!
In the books the darkling was always referred to as the darkling and so were all the other ones that (supposedly) came before him. There names just changed. Darkling is less of a name and more of a title I guess? When he created the shadow fold he was known as the black heretic. It actually took the darkling a long time to tell Alina his name and it was a pretty big moment, I don't know why they changed it since they didn't refer to him by his real name in the show either and I know I am not the only one who was disappointed by this change.
I never read the books for shadow and bones ( only six of crows) because I wanted to be surprise!! I do here comparisons between the books and the show which always have me like 😮 lol!! So it’s interesting to hear people talk about how it’s different!!
@Day Yeah I know, I just think it is even funnier that he was called the darkling from the start. I mean who could've guessed that someone named the darkling, who has direct connections to the main source of conflict and is practicing what would be this worlds equivalent of dark magic (literally haha) is the villain? Not me that's for sure.
@@onceuponawalkingdeadpll8355 I mean the shadow and bone storylines are pretty similar, but everything involving the crows is only for the show since their story hasn't started yet.
I didn't understand why they made that change either. It had no significant impact (I guess they tried with another route of him trying to manipulate alina into feeling more welcomed by sharing his name earlier) but the fact they just erased his title and had other characters use it as random didn't sit well with me. He isn't just any normal guy, he THE only shadow summoner they know therefore using his name is kind of ... weird? idk, I'm not a fan of the darling but I liked how at the end of the third book we were reminded that behind that evil character there was still a real human who was more than his title.
@@nayrarodriguez3385 Exactly. In the books sharing his name had significance to the story and the way we viewed the character. Obviously a TV adaptation will change things, sometimes to fit the new format better and sometimes to improve something and that's okay, but I absolutely hate it when they change things for no apparent reason. If they wanted alina to feel more welcome and closer to him they could've had her using whatever name he goes by at the time and everyone else call him the darling, no need to waste his real name for a throwaway scene.
i felt so hurt when you said you were going to talk about shitty netflix shows and shadow and bone appeared bc six of crows is one of my all time favorite books (you should TOTALLY read it, what happens in the show is not even on the books since it’s supposed to be a prequel, anyway the books are so amazing)
@@Nuuhnn_ya you don't really have to read shadow and bone since it's a completely different storyline just set in the same universe, but it's really confusing to read alone because the world building was already done in shadow and bone, and you don't really enjoy it as much as you could've if you've read them, so I definitely recommend reading those first:) Also, it spoils the end of ruin and rising (the third book in the shadow and bone trilogy).

I think the lighting/colors/hues had more to do with the setting and not the characters. The crows were in Ketterdam the first few episodes but they then travel to Ravka (which is why the hues changed)...at least that's my guess
No that's true. Nina was in Ravka and not Ketterdam when she gets caught by the Druskeles, atleast in the show. In the books she was in Fjerda with Zoya and her peers for a mission and gets caught by Matthias and team.
I thought that maybe the change in color had something more to do with Nina later on (in CK) kinda being the connection between the Second Army, Zoya, the Ravkan king etc. and the crows on the other side, as she is the *only* trained Grisha amongst them and a former soldier.
I never read Shadow and Bone (only six of crows) so I went in blind. In the first ep the mc goes into the fold with a crew on a ship which gets attacked by the monsters and it was shot AMAZINGLY. It was filled with so much tension. The camera was very dynamic like Dylan said so it moved around and followed the mc and those that got killed and it made the scene so much more terrifying and cool than if they shot it like a typical action scene. Those small things really change a show from okay to great
YES. I have read the books prior to the show and tho I was "wtf" at some dialogue, the camera work, soundtrack, etc were beyond expectation for a netflix show for me.
When there are multiple directors for one show or set of movies it’s so important that they discuss and plan together so that each person can put in their own creative shooting/blocking and themes without it feeling detached or mismatched from the others- even something as simple as keeping the type of shots and lighting the same for a character until a pivotal moment
Shadow and bone was the first book to tv series adaptation that I truly enjoyed. Of course it made changes to the source material, but they were done so well it was entertaining.
Yep, the books had an unreliable first person perspective. It was missing a lot of the background facts, motivations, and political issues of the world.
@@dawnmontero3865 Lev Grossman. There are three books, “The Magicians”, “The Magician King”, and “The Magician Land”. I recommend reading the books before watching the series, which is currently on Netflix. There’s a lot of language in both
I love when guys admit that media targeted at women isn't inherently bad!! And also when they point out that when it is, it's usually because it's handed off to directors who don't care about the source material and are only trying to make a profit! I'm so sick of female-targeted media being looked down upon!!! Women are good at storytelling, I swear! Just cuz a book was written by a woman with a female lead doesn't mean it's only going to be enjoyable for girls!!!! This breakdown was beautiful. I wish Shadow and Bone would have had more hype. The books and the show are masterpieces :')
Of course media targeted at women isn't inherently bad. It's just largely shoddy and contrived, whilst having a few solid elements.; the worse elements being more visible when put to a new medium and pushed under an agenda.
I have nothing against female media creators, female characters getting focus and so on. My issue is how targeted audiences as a whole often times becomes an excuse for agendas & the active ostracizing of other potential audiences. Female targeted media can be great, as long as first & foremost it’s a good piece of media. Female characters getting focus can be great, as long as the characters & their story are good themselves. And I’ll point out it’s exactly the same for any other form of media or targeted audience. Nothing is inherently bad simply by being a genre or category. Almost anything has the potential to work as long as someone makes it good. Which by extension allows the audience gained to reach beyond the target. Giving everyone something to enjoy & love. Which in the case of female media allows it to have the same well deserved notoriety & praise as anything else.
I don't think the problem is that female-targeted media being looked down upon so much as it's the people who create it looking down on women. Cynical producers/directors see that they need to have strong female characters and opt for STRONG FEMALE characters. In truth, what we want are STRONG female CHARACTERS. If people who respect women are running the project, they tend to do things like allow the female characters to have flaws and motives that do not solely revolve around their romantic interest; they fail and struggle in their journey to reach their goals. The creators respect their audience's ability to accept that women are just as flawed as anyone else.
I tried shadow and bone. Was hyped about it at first until the guy wizard kidnapped the main girl and held her in his castle against her will and I was like whelp, I'm done. I don't have any patience with stories that are ok with portraying women are things to do with as they wish.
@@Blue_Star_Child I understand where you're coming from initially, but I do have to say that the darkling (though portrayed as a romantic interest at first) is quickly revealed as a villain and his actions are looked down upon in the story. You just didn't give the story long enough to get to that point lol.
genuinely netflix has produced some really good shows but all of them had passion from behind the scenes with the authors either being hands-on (shadow and bone, heartstopper, etc) or they had extremely good directors (She-re, sex ed, etc) and it makes me sad that they spread themselves so thin, trying to make a million different things when they could focus on things people actually care about :/ if your crew doesn't care about the show, neither will we.
god im surprisingly relieved and a little shocked that you loved shadow and bone! i mean it is a good show and a good adaption to the books (except some few parts *cough cough* like darkling's name) but its definitely an amazing show and i just hope (IM NOT RECOMMENDING DYLAN GOD DAMMIT!!) you could give your thoughts on the second season like this or just react to it!
The only things i get mad about in shadow and bone is the darklings name being revealed, and the crows storyline, like i love them but its annoying because they messed up the books timeline
@@amberxx1223 they actually didn't mess up the whole timeline, it just became more confusing because of their meeting age and all. they just mess with a little bit of their original timeline and tbh im not furious about it because the casting is so perfect i can easily forget that mistake. probably the crows are the most well casted in the whole show sooo....
If I ever win a crazy amount in the lottery, I’m going to give Dylan whatever he needs to make his own film. I’m really curious to see what he would do on his own given the chance.
17:59 Thank you so much for pointing this out. People don't talk enough about when you can see actors acting. You can see them having to think about being in character, how to mold their facial expressions when they're on camera, exactly how to move and what their cues are. I've been seeing it more and more in the MCU and it drives me nuts.
The fact that you kept on calling the Winx by pokemon names is the best thing about this video.😂 I Hated that adaptation so much that i 100% think it would have been better if they were like human forms of Pokemons,it would definitely have made more sense and it would be definitely more cooler😁
Fate the winx saga is an insult to Winx! They wanted something more edgy as if there was no edge in the original. Spoilers!!! Tecna sacrificed herself for her friends, Aisha lost her sight to save her home planet, Nabu died!! They also whitewashed characters and erased the only neurodivergent character! The love stories where also interesting! You wanted edgy, put actual Musa and Raven together, nothing more toxic and edgy. I could go on and on, but I'll stop there. Edit: Also transformations!!! Battles!!!! Fashion!!!! Everything is bleak!
That's the problem with most live action reboots: they think the needed problem in old, nostalgia filled adventure cartoons is to make everything bleak, dark, sexy and gritty. It happens with Winx, Dragonball, Avatar, Riverdale, you name it lol
They didn't willingly remove their anchor shows (Friends, The Office, etc). They lost them. The licenses' expired and the owners found better deals elsewhere. In the case of The Office, NBC needed it to lure people over to Peacock. The reason behind creating their own content is to prevent it from continuing to happen.
Exactly what I was going to say! Plus with all the new streaming services like HBO, Disneyplus, Peacock as you mentioned, I think its getting harder for Netflix to acquire the "popular" titles at the moment so they're kind of forced to bring in all these shows that aren't necessarily good.
@@feli3051 Unfortunatly, Netflix has the mindset that people won't watch shows that are longer than five seasons. So at five seasons or close to that they cancel them. Don't expect any netflix original show to surpass that. If they cancel the show before five seasons, most likely means the show didn't do well overall and it wasn't worth continueing. Got to remember that even if a show is bad it might still get a lot of views, like the reality stuff, people love reality tv. The show might be good, but if it only has a niche following than overall it's not worth to continue.
@@SoWhosGae Exactly, this is not something Netflix would have done, or had been doing before we got a bunch more streaming services. They're now bringing in foreign shows and movies because its what's available, at least thats what I think happened with squid game. Luckily it gained popularity, and was pretty successful
Sad part of all of this is that the Winx had a good balance of dark and light elements. The dark elements were to tell the story, especially about Bloom and her internal struggles of identity and loss while the lighter elements were to be fillers or relief. The thing is though even while it was light we immediately had dark elements, people.dying or being betrayed or secrets revealed to make sure the audience knows that the story is still taking place. The show has as much fighting as much as they do shopping, friendship and relationships. I love dark shows but nowadays everyone wants to be dark but not tell a actual story, 6 episodes of nothing.
As for winx, I agree.. i want more action!! Season 1 was a MAJOR let down as an avid winx watcher as a kid. One of my fave shows :.) s2 was ehhhh I was only happy they added flora lmao
I think the colouring changed from episode 3 of Shadow and Bone because the crows (not the six) were in Ravka then and they left Ketterdam. I don't think the colouring was for the characters; I think it was for the setting.

I remember season 2 of the original series had a dark bloom arc
@@oddiek Exactly, that's another reason why this story thread would work, because obviously Fate is doing an earlier exploration of Dark Bloom in a sense by showing how imperative it is for her to be in control of her emotions, otherwise bad things happen to the people she cares about, and clearly Rosalind is hoping to, quite literally, fuel the fire. 🔥
i thought you wrote Mufasa at first an i was like fuckin plot twist
It’s such an exiting premise shame it was wasted in this show. What I’d give to see someone with drive and talent redo the show and make it better…

And I am not okay with this which left on a huge cliffhanger and only had seven episodes

the most frustrating thing about the winx saga was the clothes.

Omg you are right!
Yes I remember noticing that when I first saw the show and thinking that was a fantastic touch (no pun intended) in the directing

As a woman, I really appreciate well crafted action sequences. It sucks that that filmmakers do such shoddy work with action, humor, and character development if they’re target audience is women

I think it’s about setting, not character. The kidnapping scene takes place in West Ravka, and the orangey lighting is reserved for Ketterdam.

Right? Us women folk want great fight sequences too. It’s not a sex/gendered thing - it’s a people with good taste thing. Most people want good fight/battle sequences because it’s simply enjoying something created skilfully: like appreciating a beautifully cooked meal; or the architecture of a castle.

Just because the movie or tv show you’re creating is mostly targeted at a female teen audience does not mean you should slack off in that department. It also makes the writing and the characterisations look weaker when fight scenes are not well choreographed.

One of the main reasons for me is inconsistency and unpredictability. Netflix loves to make good shows and cancel them after a season or two.

I know that by all technicalities, these are all true and accurate, but these descriptions are sending me.
It's so sad how the show I watched when I was 7 was much better than the older adapted show
Let's be real here they were adapting a cartoon to a live action i feel like if they made it too much like the original it would have be to predictable, I like this version.

I hope Dylan reads Six of Crows and realizes how much more violent and dark the show could've been. But hopefully more violence in the next season!
The best yet shortest book series I have ever read.
i kinda wish in season 2 they would add that scene where kaz plucks out a man’s eyeball
@@FANGRUNlN I wish, but that would definitely feel way out of place with the current vibe of the show. A shift would definitely have to occur. The coloring crossover/mixup in episode 3 of S&B actually makes sense with some context! Nina (known here fondly as Beatrice) is a character established in Six of Crows (warm tones), but she is native to the country the main character is in with the shadow fold (neutral tones) and is also Grisha (has powers, would be in the same part of the army as mc if she wasn’t currently……on a lil detour from her duty we’ll say lmao.)
In the show storyline she was also meant to be the (six) crows’ ~connection~ to get them into the little palace aka Darkle’s Castle aka land au neutral so her character intro literally represented one side venturing into the other!
Agreed. Heartstopper felt so true to the original material. I felt the same way watching the show as I did reading the webcomic
Unfortunately, if I remember properly, the original creator of Winx did work on Fate so.... I really don't know what happened there.
Ah mannn does that mean the last air bender is gonna suck then…I shouldn’t have high hopes but here I am having high hopes
We'll make money regardless.
no mourners!!
bro the fact that they were scared to basically stick to the original material in some sense is annoying.
The cartoon is italian and I’m italian too. Watching that show broke my childhood heart lol
Also I read Cursed, I hated it, it was messy and the plot was all over the place for me.
no mourners :D
@@arushiverma1672 No funerals :)
S&B f-ed up cultural representation though. Completely shoe-horned in and blunter than a brick to the face, with no lasting repercussions.
I just remembered that in the book, the Darkling’s (alleged) ancestor who created the Shadow Fold was called the Black Heretic. Calling him the Darkling was like people calling him “the devil’s grandkid.”

I totally agree. The show felt so much more lively then the Shadow and Bone books
totally, nothing can beat six of Crows, but yes.. the show is better than shadow and bone books no doubt.
yes the casting choices are sooo good because in the books and in the movie alina has literally no chemistry with her best friend lok
exactly my thoughts!! I hated SAB trilogy i think the show was so much better
I was looking for this comment.. I genuinely loved the show.
The Six side definitely has a lot more pans and stuff.
they also have more bis hehe
they're called the 'crows', the six of 'crows'. The 'six' threw me off so much😭

The fact that Dylan always talks about YA books but hasn't read the best ones (the Six of Crows duology) is the most shocking thing ever
Isn't that what he said?

im so glad dylan enjoyed s&b
also im pretty sure when the director changed the colours in the shots changing to less warm colours was because the 'six' were now in the same country as the 'shadows'... thats why the shots were more cold
Young and niche/fan audiences will almost do the marketing for them
@Maeve im sorry but EBOLA HOLMES got me-
@@moethemoon Same! rofl Ebola Holmes.
As someone who has only watched the show and has no knowledge of the books, nothing you said there made a shred of sense 🤣

Everything that The Winx Club was best for (fight sequences, fashion, friendships, world building, characters), the Netflix series said ‘no’ TO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.
Yeah winx club had great diversity to I already knew Netflix was gonna take that away 💀
I loved that show as a kid and the remake was such a disappointment😞

ngl the fact that they kept out the fairy costumes but still had to give Bloom her "transformation" sequence that amounted nothing more to swirling flames and flame wings is. so. funny in hindsight. all that build-up and for nothing?? it could've actually been kinda epic if the flame wings erupted from her back from a sudden, instinctive power awakening and power boost, and idk, MORE FLAMES. fucking ring of fire, i don't mind. the visuals could've still been epic without the original aesthetic but they didn't even tryyyyy.

The outfits are just bad. Euphoria did a much better and that show isn't even a fantasy series so how tf? All the characters just got assassinated terribly
Bloom went from the kind cinnamon roll hot head that was trying to figure out who she was to edgy mean overpowered generic main protagonist girl.
Winx had interesting romance but now they just always gotta add romance drama in these kind of shows

Shadow and Bone surprised me, I actually really liked it and immediately bought the books. The idea of the Fold is just so interesting, and also Ben Barnes as the Darkling whew.
Six of Crows Duology >>> Shadow & Bone Trilogy

Darkling is less of a name and more of a title I guess? When he created the shadow fold he was known as the black heretic.
If they wanted alina to feel more welcome and closer to him they could've had her using whatever name he goes by at the time and everyone else call him the darling, no need to waste his real name for a throwaway scene.

“Swapping anklets is one of the most intimate things you can do with a person” truer words have never been spoken
god im surprisingly relieved and a little shocked that you loved shadow and bone! i mean it is a good show and a good adaption to the books (except some few parts *cough cough* like darkling's name) but its definitely an amazing show and i just hope (IM NOT RECOMMENDING DYLAN GOD DAMMIT!!) you could give your thoughts on the second season like this or just react to it!
It made me mad when they revealed the Darkling's real name !
OMG I was so pissed when they revealed the darklings name cause that played a major role in the books and I hate how loosely the show handled it.
Omg yeaaah I love the show but his name is such and important part and I love how the books handle it so it was so disappointing honestly 😭
I am with you !!
So much murder 😂
I've literally had the same thought
dylan calling the crows "the six" has got to be the most dylan thing he's ever done
WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT THIS
17:59 Thank you so much for pointing this out. People don't talk enough about when you can see actors acting. You can see them having to think about being in character, how to mold their facial expressions when they're on camera, exactly how to move and what their cues are. I've been seeing it more and more in the MCU and it drives me nuts.
I love when Dylan goes into the technical details of film making, cringe shows are fun on thier own but this was a clever combination of both
Finally someone said it! A lot of Netflix originals are shit..😬 And the few shows that are good get canceled 🤦🏾♀️

The fact that you kept on calling the Winx by pokemon names is the best thing about this video.😂 I Hated that adaptation so much that i 100% think it would have been better if they were like human forms of Pokemons,it would definitely have made more sense and it would be definitely more cooler😁
i love when dylan talks about editing, directing and cinematography in movies/shows!!
Never expected Dylan to talk about Shadow and Bone. Now I need MORE
you got the girlies on twitter freaking out
They didn't willingly remove their anchor shows (Friends, The Office, etc).
OK, but what about the crappie shows they make themselves that they keep giving us, instead of renewing shows that we actually want and that are good.
@@Ha-fg5xg I thought they were pretty successful with the Korean shows like Squid Game and All of Us and Arcane. Plus there's Stranger Things coming.
I can’t express how happy I am that Dylan enjoyed shadow and bone!
If you like the grishaverse you should definitely read six of crows
YES! I'm on my 10th re read of the duology. And when is Season 2?!
@@filmfangirls9163 ahhhh I hope we get the release date soon I’m so excited, especially for Wylan and Nikolai’s castings!

Exactly
I actually enjoyed this.. just Dylan sitting, talking about terrible directing 👏🏽 love it!
