Frankly, they always respected him. There's a big difference between hazing (in the early days) and brotherly joking, and disrespect. Even Jason said they always treated him (and paid him) like an equal. The only time he felt disrespected, was when James didn't want him to do Echobrain. And James' wasn't in a good place at the time. He's since admitted he was wrong.
So just be happy that it's awesome Jason did a video for the Metallica channel (and fans). No need to bring up nonexistent drama. Jason loved, and loves, Metallica. That as clear when he went into the HoF with them.

They respected him alot. They just had different views on life and their careers at the end. But i guess that doesnt fit your narrative.

Listening to him recall every single picture in the book, you can tell how important it was for him to be a part of Metallica. This is awesome.
It's a shame that they had to treat him and their own band like crap. I was very proud of him when he left.

That's why James and Lars gave him shit, cuz deep down they were still angry that Cliff wasn't with them. He was the punching bag from day 1. Cliff would've laughed at James if he said he couldn't do side projects. I firmly beleive when Cliff died, that's where James control issues started.

Loved hearing him explain on a podcast why he always wore Metallica shirts on stage. He was like because that was my fucking band. Or something he was so proud
He loved being in that band more than the original members.
The fact that Jason's doing this shows how far these guys have really come as family. Very fitting as this was the album where Jason was really heard, production-wise.

he was the live vehicle/driver that propelled them into global/international stardom.. the man live breath and bleed Metallica for those 14/15 yrs, never once drop out right up to the end

This guy definitely gives a shit. Very wholesome, very humble. The fact that Jason has a photographic memory of that tour, despite always being the odd man out, is amazing. It shows just how much it meant to him

Jason being the odd man out is what made him my favourite, and I play rhythm guitar not base. Jason was a fan of the band, who got to be in the band. Thats a metal fairytale story. Somehow, as a fan, I could relate to Jason, and he made me feel closer to the band as a whole, and know it was possible, however improbable, that I could join my musical hero's and be a part of the greatest band. We are sort of a global family of "odd man outs" aren't we. Love and Respect.
Jason is so professional. He never badmouths anyone. He always keeps it to himself. Always talks about the good times. Every band would love to have him as a bassist
He’s talked plenty about the bad times. He’s asked about it all the time so I get it, but he’s not shy about how bitter he was about how it all fell apart.
That said, he seems like a humble guy and has a genuine appreciation for the music and his time in the band.

He does have a good memory. However, you gotta remember he wasn’t a druggie, was in “the” band he considered his heroes/idols (at the time), while living out a dream/fantasy that not a single soul on this planet could ever possibly forget given its prominence, all the while being at the age where your brain hits its peak of memory absorption. I highly doubt many would forget something like that/this if presented with the identical scenario...

I think he said back in 2015 that he couldn't spend his royalties he received on the black album in his life if he tried, this doesn't even include what he got for the Load and Reload cycles which were also successful, this man is loaded for life and he deserves it!

I was so upset, for literally years, after Jason left Metallica. He was easily the member I most closely related to. I understood then, and more so now, his reasons for his departure but it didn't make it easier. It was like Mom and Dad getting a divorce. So happy to see he looks back on it all rather fondly and that his relationship with the other guys has been for the most part mended. Metallica was quite literally the soundtrack to my adolescence. Thanks for doing this video Jason. You're still the fucking man!
He was the only one that felt like he cared about the fans. By the black album it felt like Metallica was trying to complete with Guns and Roses so they all became douche bags accept Jason.
We want more Jason. More stories, more music, more of him. Such a cool and humble guy. A true inspiration.

It took me a second to realize it was Jason. It is so cool that he is on good terms with the band. You rarely see that when someone leaves. Plus his memory is perfect for doing a review like this.

Jason is a Beast. Loved his energy and his backup vocals. In an odd way, him leaving may have saved Metallica in the long run. Will always be a Metallica Metal God.
That definitely wasn't too long, could have listened to Jason talk for hours about the old days. Saw the Orchard Park show at age 17 in 1992. Faith No More/Gunz/Metallica. Best show I've ever seen in my life. BY FAR. One of the first (of many many many) times I saw you guys live. Thanks for this!!!! Great to see Jason!

I saw that tour in Montreal, the infamous pyro accident. After several hours wait, the gunners took the stage, but then cut their set short due to Axl being a crybaby. As every good Montreal always does, riots ensued!! lol

I had an emotional moment right there, like, seeing an old friend, you know? I've been a fan for almost 10 years and seeing Jason opening this box, felt like Justice for me.

Not gonna lie, I'd love to have like, an hour long video of Jason going through the contents of the box, listening to the demos and everything, and telling the stories that accompany this or that. That'd be so cool
Meeting Jason Newsted was my favorite celebrity experience. He spoke to me like I was the only kid in the world after the Charlotte show on the Reload tour.
We talked for about 5 minutes about the Morley pedal he used back then, the one that made all the noise on Bellz. I was a 16 year old kid in awe of his bass idol at the time and I couldn’t believe he was looking me in the eye and treating me so nice. He was the only member of the band that came out after the show and hung out with the fans. His dedication to the fans was amazing.
It’s no wonder with his personality and his energy that he remains one of the best loved members of the band.

Oh yeah, a lot of emotional when i saw Jason there, imagine for him how meanful was to be inclued, Jason always got a way to thanks the Metallica family, crew, fans for everything, Jason is an angel, Jason will always be in deep of my heart and i respect him as a person and musician, god save Jason!

I remember Jason from his Flotsam and Jetsam days in Scottsdale! I was a 14 year old kid at the time but I used to see him around. He was just a local rocker at that point.
The black album was my introduction to Metallica...and Jason has always been the only bassists i grew up with during Metallica era! Much love and this unboxing really brought me back to the love i have for the band!
He filled some really big shoes when Cliff Burton died.I like Robert Trujillo and he has done amazing things with Metallica, but Jason's energy was just contagious.

@@kirkcruz9721 Respectfully disagree. Kill ' em all, master of puppets, and ride the lightning with Cliff Burton on bass was the gold standard, and still is. The other bassists were just trying to live up to his standard. Don't get me wrong, Jason Newstead is a phenomenal bass player and I love everything he did while in Metallica. Having been a fan since the 80's, I always look at the Cliff Burton era as the best.

@@jasonsheets2694 the story of how much Jason had to struggle during his time in Metallica getting over the passing of Cliff Burton was a testament of his virtues...and regardless he still pushed this big heavy metal band to strive to be the best that Metallica could be! He fought for his own stuff to get into the album which showed he really wanted to contribute...put ourselves in his shoe and would we have endured?!

Newsted was and still is my favorite bassist that played in Metallica. His energy on stage was tremendous, and his personality is second to none. Justice and Metallica are classics in my book. 🤘🏼
Classy and very cool touch from the band to allow Jason to promote this....he was a major player on their greatest album and they realise that...I’m sure Jason got a massive kick out of this..total respect to the guys and shows that we’re all mellowing as we enter maturity ....hey, but we can still crank that shit up to 11 though....✊✊
i had the tape doomsday for the deceiver, theres a bass solo on that w the drums accompanying. i was in middle school about to start 8th grade when this album came out. everything was changing so fast. my friend called and said the new metallica albums good, james actually sings (unforgiven). the early 90s is when metal became pop.

Jason walking away from Metallica has to have been the most difficult decision he has ever made to this day. That must have taken some built up pain and hurt to make that move. Will always wish he was still with them he was my hero. He’s the reason I great out my hair and went in the bathroom and shaved my hair underneath. My mom was pissed 😂
Its nice seeing Jason again. I'm hoping Metallica does a reunion for there 40th anniversary and Jason plays with them.

@@7BlueDodger yeah, he can't play it like he'd want to. As a bassist myself, they get very heavy after a lengthy gig. Shoulder surgery would totally screw that up, not being able to bare the weight anymore. I'm sure sitting he plays fine. But, he doesn't want that, and I wouldn't either.
I could literally sit and watch Jason go through that entire photo history book and recount his memories. Top effort dude, such respect :)
Jason! So glad to see you're including him in this. He's such a humble guy, and an key player in many of us fans' eyes. (Don't tell anyone, but he's my favorite Metallica bass player, he's the one I grew up with)

My favorite too, I know Jason and the band have cleared the air and are on good terms; friends again, but I still feel lile there is nothing they can do to make up for the shit they put him through. Ahh well let bygones be bygones I suppose.

Wow, Jason's attention to detail on when so many promotional pictures were taken really shows more than ever how much he cherished his time in the band. It's impressive that he remembers the minor stuff from 30 years ago when the band was at their commercial peak and there was so much going on at the time, yet he could still take it all in. Rock on Jason.

I love this band so much, man. It's almost impossible for me to explain to others around me how much Metallica is part of me. Goal in life is to see these guys live for the first time! I have no other "material dreams", just seeing Metallica ONE time. I really hope that moment comes soon for me.
I love seeing Jason here, involved in the celebrations of this masterpiece. You can see him breathing heavily, holding back his emotions, remembering everything from the old days.
I love that they got Jason doin this. The biggest album that they ever release.

I absolutely love that they got Jason to do this. I was new to Metallica at the time this came out and his energy was always palpable. Forever grateful for his contributions to Metallica.
Did Metallica themselves ask Jason to do this unboxing video? I'm sure they did that's how he got this so early.
I'm just happy that in time they got over their beef and that Jason was included in this anniversary release. Could've been as ugly as the Roger Waters/David Gilmour split going on for 40 years. He definitely looks happy and at peace.
Same! Thankfully they have been over it for years. The 30th anniversary shows were evidence of that. I also recall Jason saying in an interview a few years back that he and Lars catch up regularly over the phone.
Thanks for being there Jason, all your contributions you gave to Metallica, you gave to your fans as well. My total support to you.
Hearing how genuine and humble Jason is almost makes me tear up. I hope he's going to the 40th anniversary show. Would love to see him play live with the guys again!
Metallica is coming to him I think. They are playing in Florida in his town and I hope he joins them for one of the nights. Hopefully he plays Sad But True and Blackened. 🤘🤘

this just made me smile the whole way through. I could watch Jason explain every photo in the book happily. unbelievable how good his memory recollection is! Unbelievable bass player and human, so glad he was the one to do this.

This unboxing was special in so many ways (glad they included Jason). Can't recall how many Metallica concerts I went to back in the day but I remember how Jason would make time after every show to meet fans who at the time, knowingly hung around after the gig. The guy was truly down to earth then, and is still that same guy now (older but even more wiser). I know he mentioned in various interviews that his body can no longer handle the demanding (by Metallica standards) rigors of touring... but boy would I go back into that late 80's through mid-90's mode when I flew all over the place to watch them, to see Jason do a short "reunion" with them while they all still can.
Remembering all those details shows you this guy was very present and switched on everyday. It wasn’t all a haze that was taken for granted. He showed up everyday and gave it his all. I miss his presence and energy!
Metallica has had three phenomenal bass players. It’s difficult to decide who’s my favourite.
Cliff is the obvious choice. A legend. Truly.
But Jason was the guy when I first got into the band in the 90’s. Jason had the best vocals: harmonies, growls, and that one chorus in Creeping Death. He gave 100% at every show.
And Rob…. I mean, it’s hard to deny Rob’s talent. He’s a solid player, a great live presence, and just seems like an overall cool dude.
I know these guys are gettin’ old, but I hope they have at least one more record in them. Doesn’t have to be 80’s style metal either… I’d be happy with a resurgence of their 90’s era sound.
They're working on another album. I think Lars said they've written at least 10 songs

Yeah, that's the thing ... you can't say anything bad about any of the 3 bassists. They were all epic in their own way.
Jason has kept himself in great shape all these many years and that is not easy for anybody in that business.
