A small low profile rare earth magnet could help keeping the door closed, might have to experiment on different shape and sizes. Another option, small zip ties.
Would this roller work with a masonry sand top soil mixture. Called lawn conditioner at my nearest nursery. 70 percent sand 30 percent processed pine and leaf compost, Very curious. Thanks
I haven’t done it personally, but I would imagine it would pass through the openings at a much faster rate. I would also imagine that you would have to keep moving to prevent the sand from just flowing out of the holes if it’s just sitting around.
Thank you! I’m definitely going to put this to work when I do the fall overseed! Not only is it a time saver, but you are able to efficiently spread the top dressing out evenly. Every bag of peat moss will go further for sure. Thanks for watching Travis!
I saw a video by Pest and Lawn Ginga where he takes bags of topsoil from Home Depot, not the same as screened, but I would imagine similar results. Which were pretty good!
Did you empty the material throughout the project, or did you just do it all in and empty it once at the end? With the door in the middle section only, seems like it could be more difficult to empty compare to the 24 with the door going completely across
I can get about 3-4 bags of peat spread before needing to empty. I just lift it up onto a wheelbarrow, then empty it out. Gives me enough room to get my arm in the unit to pull everything out.
@@TheLawngineer Great Idea, Thanks!! I have the 36 and plan on using it for the 1st time in the coming days but was trying to figure out the most efficient way to empty it.
Could you use the Landzie to topdress with topsoil instead of peat moss? Also, if I wanted to level my lawn with Mason sand, I assume this wouldn't be a good tool for that as it seems sand could pass too quickly and easily through those openings in the Landzie.
You can use top soil, but make sure it’s dry. If it’s too wet and clumpy, it’s not going to work well. Also, you can use for sand too, but you’ll have to work fairly quickly since it will come out of the holes much faster.
Question: I installed a new front lawn earlier September. Seed w/ fertilizer went down 9/7/21. I've had ok results , but thin spots are and some bare spots still abundant. Can I hit the lawn again with more seed ontop / over baby grass growing? Than top dress with peat moss? My front area is roughly 1,000 square feet. I used a bag of seed that was 7lbs....said too cover 2300 square ft. I know I won't have perfect results immediately. It's gonna take patience and couple overseeds....plse leave me some comments..tks.
Yes you can, I’ve done that in the past with good results. Usually happens when you get a wash-out from a rain storm. Feel free to go back over those thin/bare areas with seed and a light dusting of peat moss.
@@TheLawngineer ....thanks for your time and information. I'm gonna drop more seed this Saturday. Hopefully with watering it'll have time to germinate in northeast Ohio.
@@michaeltobin905 no. It’s not meant to level. Too much organic content that will break down over time. If you are looking to level, sand is your best option. You can also use screened fill dirt (not topsoil) but it’s a bit harder to work with.
Seems like a common thing. I hear you on the environmental side... especially how it is harvested and how it has impacted the bogs. It’s also relatively acidic and can impact pH. I’ll likely be using compost, sand or soil in the future. All of which are also compatible with Landzie.
Never heard of using peat moss for top dressing. We use peat moss for covering the seed of the seed is just on dirt/ not an overseed in established grass. We use organic compost after aeration.
Yeah, the price for the 44" is high, but I don't remember it being THAT high on the Landzie website 2-3 years ago. Still, it was at least $500... but that pails in comparison to the prices of the same types of effective tools that can be used by hand. These days there are cheaper knock-offs...
I try to get bags that are at the bottom of the stack at the store when they are stored outside. They seem to be drier. The bags used in this video were stored indoors at the store, so they were never exposed to the elements. Even though the packaging is relatively water tight, there seems to always be a hole that allows moisture into the bag. Seems like the moisture is what causes the clumps. I’ve had to break up peat before too. If you only fill the Landzie halfway, it should tumble around and break most of it up.
Apparently, the newest models changed the placement of the latches to the sides of the tool. I'm jealous, though mine have never given me any problems.
Depends on the size of your lawn. I would say if you have a lawn big enough to warrant the need for a ride-on mower, then go with the 48. Otherwise 24 is enough.
@@TheLawngineer I have a problem with the soil here in Indiana. I have clay soil with no top soil. Only thing I can get to grow is fescue. Not recommended unless the soil is extremely dry and free of clumps. If you do it, add a few large rocks to the bin to help break things up.
Great tool if you can get the door to latch and stay latched
Thanks for watching! They are spring loaded latches that keep it closed.
@@TheLawngineer I've had one for months and yes, they are spring loaded but mine does not line up whatsoever. I can get it to latch but as soon as I start rolling it pops off. I've resorted to tying the door shut and just cut the strings when I need a refill because it's that great of a tool.
A small low profile rare earth magnet could help keeping the door closed, might have to experiment on different shape and sizes. Another option, small zip ties.
Another great Video
Thank you Mark!
Great content! 👍🏽👍🏽
@@onthelawntraining5205 thank you!!
Just bought it
can that be used to spread topsoil or plain dirt
If it’s very dry and relatively free of clumps, yes.
Great, thorough explanation and demo. Those things definitely look like they're worth the money for that project.
Thank you! I’m definitely going to put this to work when I do the fall overseed! Not only is it a time saver, but you are able to efficiently spread the top dressing out evenly. Every bag of peat moss will go further for sure. Thanks for watching Travis!
@@TheLawngineer I believe places let you rent these now I will def be doing that I hate spreading peat moss by hand
@@roba168 yeah!! I have heard of this too! If you can find one hear you, it would be way cheaper!
This thing is so cool Vince. I wonder how well it would do with a regular screened topsoil? 🤔
Is there a promo coupon code on these? These things are expensive.
I just checked with Landzie. Unfortunately not at the moment. Primarily because things are in short supply and backordered for the moment.
Oh dude I'm getting one of these
You won’t be disappointed!
Good luck finding one in stock.
Mid-May they will be stocked!
Will this work with a sand based topdressing?
I haven’t tried it, but imagine sand would flow more freely through the openings.
Hopefully with watering it'll have time to germinate in northeast Ohio.
when over seeding in fall, should you aerate also??
That would be ideal and definitely improve your chances. If you have the means to do it, then yes!
@@TheLawngineer does peat moss level lawn over time??
@@michaeltobin905 no. It’s not meant to level. Too much organic content that will break down over time. If you are looking to level, sand is your best option. You can also use screened fill dirt (not topsoil) but it’s a bit harder to work with.
@@TheLawngineer thanks a bunch!!
At what step would we seed? Before or after putting peat moss down?
Before
First for my boy Vince! 😎
Right on!!! Thank you!
what ph of this peat? Thanks for your video from Ukraine
I actually don’t know. I’ve heard that it can be slightly acidic, but would take a lot to really have an impact on the overall pH of your soils.
Do you use peat a lot in America? We don’t over here in the uk as it’s really bad for the environment
Seems like a common thing. I hear you on the environmental side... especially how it is harvested and how it has impacted the bogs. It’s also relatively acidic and can impact pH. I’ll likely be using compost, sand or soil in the future. All of which are also compatible with Landzie.
Great video bud. 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks David!! Did it come through in 4K for you? Seems like it might still be processing on my end.
Never heard of using peat moss for top dressing. We use peat moss for covering the seed of the seed is just on dirt/ not an overseed in established grass. We use organic compost after aeration.
We mostly use it for covering seed when overseeding
Rolling on the floor... laughing. Just priced the 44" Landzie Compost & Peat Moss spreader on Amazon Price: $799.99. Seriously... I'll make my own.
Damn! That’s expensive. Is it the same price direct from Landzie?
Yeah, the price for the 44" is high, but I don't remember it being THAT high on the Landzie website 2-3 years ago. Still, it was at least $500... but that pails in comparison to the prices of the same types of effective tools that can be used by hand. These days there are cheaper knock-offs...
Where do you purchase your peat moss from?
Home Depot
Will it handle loam?
If it’s very dry, should be OK
I too dressed 3 lawn this week. The peat Moss we used wasn’t this fine. We had to break it up. Is this common or is all peat Moss clumpy ?
I try to get bags that are at the bottom of the stack at the store when they are stored outside. They seem to be drier. The bags used in this video were stored indoors at the store, so they were never exposed to the elements.
Even though the packaging is relatively water tight, there seems to always be a hole that allows moisture into the bag. Seems like the moisture is what causes the clumps. I’ve had to break up peat before too. If you only fill the Landzie halfway, it should tumble around and break most of it up.
Question is: Is the peat moss spread even enough so that the new grass will grow evenly and not spotty at all?
Yes! It does a really good job of putting down a uniform, thin coating.
Have you tried it on a newly seeded lawn? With great result?

The latches should have been on the side correct? Latches are always hitting the ground when rolling??
Latches hit the ground when rolling.
@@TheLawngineer so don't you believe that the latches should have been made on the side so they do not get beat up when rolling?
@@brodygoalie I haven’t had an issue with it. One thing I don’t do is roll it in concrete.
Apparently, the newest models changed the placement of the latches to the sides of the tool. I'm jealous, though mine have never given me any problems.
super
What’s better 24 or 48” ?
Depends on the size of your lawn. I would say if you have a lawn big enough to warrant the need for a ride-on mower, then go with the 48. Otherwise 24 is enough.
I would buy one but it’s pretty pricey.

Landzie makes a good product but it’s $400! The cheapest price I found on EBay was $365. Not that great a deal.
How do you make this work with a riding lawn mower towing it?
This is actually on my list of videos to showcase soon.
@@TheLawngineer I have a problem with the soil here in Indiana. I have clay soil with no top soil. Only thing I can get to grow is fescue. I think if I aerate and then top dress each year with the landzie machine. I could theoretically change the soil over time to allow for Kentucky blue grass to grow. I really don't want to have to kill everything and start over once I have a good layer of soil. Rn I have a riding with an agri fab aerator attachment. Looking forward to this video.

Ps - for clarification that’s for the 24” handled peat moss spreader

why do you use peat moss instead of top soil or compost?
It’s easier to spread, is virtually weed free and free of pathogens, it’s excellent at holding water, it’s also a good visual indicator of when the lawn needs water.
@@TheLawngineer so peat moss is good for lawns and can make a good soil? Also, would mixing 50% peat moss and 50% compost/soil work for this spreader? Thanks!
@@esantone0398 it’s great for mimicking seed-to-soil contact. Mixing is fine. It’s easier to do when both materials are dry to avoid clumping.
What you need is a top dressing machine
