- Hey Everyone,
So it's that time of year again when I am top dressing the lawn. This step is one of the most time consuming steps, but yet so important to keep the lawn and soil healthy. I wanted to try out the Landzie compost & peat moss spreader and see if it could make the job easier and faster.
So Garden Imports sent me one to do a test! I will top dress one section like I would do any other year. Then use the Landzie on another section and compare the results and how long it takes with the same amount of top dress. Let's see which way is the fastest and easiest!

The Seymour S500 peat moss spreader is a very well made powder coated machine made in the USA and currently $199 on Amazon. I love mine and highly recommend it.
I use black kow mixed with peat moss. Unless you make your own compost or screen what you can buy, its a mixed bag. Lots of wood in there. That’s why I like Black Kow. Its great and its aged long enough to be almost perfect! Those roller spreaders are satisfying. Its the kind of work you get satisfaction! It’s initially pricey, but it will last forever if you take care of it.

Top dressing for overseeding and lawn levelling are two different functions requiring two different soil mixes and two different spreading tools. The tools you are showing are for completely different applications.

Great video. I top dressed and overseeded my lawn this weekend. Wish I could have a Landzie. Looks so much fast and easier with Landzie. Really like the even distribution of soil with Landzie.

Yeah that's actually not a bad idea, getting one and renting it out on Hygglo is a great way of getting your money back, I'm sure people will rent it non stop :)

I was very jealous of the people with riding mowers that could buy the tow behind tools that spread these types of materials easily. My lawn is not nearly large enough to warrant a riding mower, and those tools cannot be used by hand. The Landzie product was the only type of product available at a somewhat reasonable price (it is LESS pricey now than it was) when I was looking to spread compost over my heavy clay soil lawn three years ago. I only use it once a year and I have never regretted buying it for its ease of use. The hardest thing for me is putting the compost in the spreader...
I love mine too. It was so easy to cover my huge lawn.

I love my Landzie had it for a year now. Is it ok just to too dress anytime with it. I have used it after overseeding but never just to top dress which I think would be good to do.Great video Sam.
Thanks for the video. I read somewhere to help to get more from those materials with clumps just add a few tennis ball size or smaller smooth rocks inside to break it up.

I bought a Landzie last spring. It's a total game changer for spreading top dressing. It spreads very evenly and, very important, it retains all the sticks, rocks, and junk that would otherwise end up on your lawn. Sure, they are pricey, but they are extremely helpful!
I agree, it is pricey but it's the tool I have used and appreciated the most, saves a ton of time and the results are way better at the end.
Who's a lucky boy then? that looks so much easier & neater to use than having to do it manually & the crap left over can just be used in the borders, nice one Sam your lawn will soon be back to looking it's best again.

I can't tell you how much easier this was compared to the normal way, I mean the landzie might cost some but soo worth it for me

If you’re thinking about getting one do it, I have one and it works perfectly. Especially with all the unnecessary garbage in the soil bags, this thing catches it so it doesn’t go into the lawn

Nice equipment is an investment to make something that you enjoy even more enjoyable, and saved time is a bonus :) I bought an entry-level Stihl chainsaw, and a Fiskars splitting axe just for this year's firewood. I could have used cheap stuff, but it will be lovely to work with, and for many years to come. I do have a point lol... if you take care of your lawn regularly, then I totally understand getting some nice gear... even if you don't "need" it :)

I use one in my landscaping company when I do new yards with seed. I roll compost onto all the seed to anchor it down, give it nutrients, and hide it from the birds. It works like a champ, and saves time and money for both me and my clients. I can use 25% less compost but cover the same amount of space by using the roller.

As usual, great comparison video by Sam, which must be much harder to make than the final, very smooth video looks. Only one question that pops up for me: Why use a product with so much debris? I don't think there is any benefit to the lawn from this debris.
Hi Ed, thanks mate, appreciate it, glad that some people understand that making these is a lot harder than it might seem. Well I actually would never use this product, I never recommend anyone to use it, only reason I did it was that I was going to kill off the lawn anyways. It contains not only so much debris but also a lot of weed seeds. I still chose it for this comparison since it is by far the most bought product in Sweden, so I wanted to use something that most people use. But good point thought, I should have probably mentioned that in the video. Hopefully they read the comments and see that I would never recommend to actually use this particular top dress.
I picked up the 44" landzie to tow behind my lawn tractor. I had a few bags of leftover black earth from another job, and it spread them all beautifully in about 2 minutes. It blew me away how quickly and evenly it laid the soil down. I have a few cubic yards of top soil coming tomorrow that I plan to spread with it. I am expecting to slowly smooth my very lumpy lawn with it. Other than hard to work tight spots, I can't see hand spreading soil ever again.
Hey Dennis, 100% in agreement, I will never do it the manual way again. How does it work towing behind a tractor, how fast can you go before it starts affecting the result? :)
@@SamsLawn It works well behind the tractor. I find that the slower I go, the better the result. I didn't take video of the use so far, but my security camera recorded a bit of it. I will be putting up another video soon with a lot more in it when my replacement unit arrives.

@@SamsLawn yes that’s one of my grandsons. He falls asleep while we run along. I have my replacement Landzie and have started using it today. They improved the build quality quite a bit and the new one is much better suited to it’s size and being towed. I will get some videos up shortly showing the improvements and actually using it to spread bulk top soil.
I bought a clone and it was a bargain at 768 krona so I bought two!
I so far, used it only for distributing all the spent soil from planter boxes and hanging baskets on to the lawn and it worked great as you showed....!

@@SamsLawn It was a Canadian tool and farm store called Princess Auto, the quantity they had was limited as these came from offshore, not the US.
I got two because I was concerned about parts, long term, but the drum and bridge piece seem very solid, only the handle has some issues as it is in two pieces, but this would allow a handy person to make a long handle, if necessary.

Wow, mine was 140 euros from the Netherlands, advertised as a worm manure spreader from "wormenkwekerij wasse". Did the job.
Have the Landzie spreader and mix quality compost with grass seed first then fill spreader and cover whole yard. Then I apply a second coat of only compost on the same area and found much better results.
Hey Brian, seen a few other do that, always wanted to try it, just never think of it before it's already seeded and too late. Sounds like that would have saved some time. Do you get an even good spread with the seeds mixed in the compost?
@@SamsLawn Hi, it depends on how much seed is needed to cover the area you are seeding. If you can get a measurement of how much square footage you have then calculate the number of pounds of seed needed to cover that same area. There will be some overage when spreading but that is a trade off to the germination rate you are trying to achieve. If there are any areas that grow less seed then I just seed those by hand and add the compost to incourage growth. Try next spring.

When you seed, how much seed do you mix with a full lanzie? They say 4-8lbs of seed per 1000 sq ft, but when mixing it up how do you calculate how much compost to mix the seed with to get that ratio? How many sq ft does one full 24” lanzie cover?
@@kentdavis7787 Hi Kent, I mixed more then I would for my area coverage. The Pest and lawn Ginja has a good video where he compared the Lanzie to another spreader but also showed near the end of his video how he combined peat with his seed and spread it on his lawn, You might reach out to him for tips as he is well versed on lawn care.
I think, the Landzie is nice if you are doing top dressing quite often. Also might be not suitable for people, who does not have a large storage. Of course, you can store something inside Landzie. And it is true, the handles are pain in the .... , for shorter people maybe not so bad, but for taller people ... then welcome back the glory pain of the back :) . By the way, Sam, what about mosquitos? You live near the forest/park, there should be plenty of them. Once I was in Finland for a hike, that was more a mosquito fest, than a hike, what about your place? :)
Hey dude, you are very correct on that good sir, I have NOOO space left for storage haha, too much stuff, but yes, if you do top dressing once a year only then I would say it's n ot worth the money, but for people like me who do it 3-4 times a year, then definately, it's also great when you are overseeding and want that nice thin layer of top dressing on top of the seeds. I do have A LOT of mosquitos, but you can see in the background in the next video, I gotten a pioneer mosquito magnet, just had to in the end, these damn little creatures were just eating me alive :) works great, gets thousands of them in there every week :D
I dont have a Landzie, I have a different, less expensive model, and it works just as good. I bought a '24 inch model but wish I bought a bigger version since I have over 20,000 square feet. The advantage to the larger Landzie model is you can tow it from your lawn tractor. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably have gotten the bigger Landzie so I can tow it on my property. The 24 incher is fine for smaller yardage. They work great for pear moss too.
Hey Bob, wow 20 000 sounds really hard to push around a 24 inch, I can understand you wanting the tow behind version. The cheaper models, do they not have a tow behind? I would really consider selling it and getting one if they have it, 20 000 pulling a landzie manually sounds really hard, but it's keeps you in shape though ;)

Good comparison video. I’d like to add a comment as someone who uses the Landzie as a lawn care professional. Please note that this is meant as an observation rather than a complaint:
While it works well with bagged products as in this video, the same can’t be said for using bulk deliveries of topsoil. In my experience, it actually ends up taking longer than the rake method. This is because if there is more than a small amount of moisture in the topsoil, it tends to just clump up and not fall through the mesh of the Landzie very well. This just leads to having to stop every second pass or so to clear out clumps of soil. The lower the sand content the worse it is. It also means that a fair bit of soil is wasted (unless you spend even more time breaking all the clumps up).
Having said that, it works beautifully for spreading peat moss, which is what I use it for.
I should also point out that most of the renovations I’m doing are heavier than the typical annual top dress. So I tend to need to use more soil than in this example. I will be interested to see how it goes with a bagged soil on a lighter job.
Aside from that; the quality of the Landzie is good, and I would recommend it for someone who is considering it for these type of uses. Just don’t expect to run bulk amounts of soil through it.
Hey Nikolai, thanks for your input, always value other opinions. I agree fully, it does work amazing for peat moss and bagged products but when I tried it on some bulk top soil with high sand content it didn't really work out quite as well, so 100% agree with that.

Hey Stephen, I think I will use it as much as possible, I usually do just this, getting top dressing out just for the sake of the micro life in the soil, a couple of times a year, this will make it so much easier. Thanks for watching mate.

I really dont like the price for these spreaders and dont have the extra space for storing it when not in use. I discovered I could rent a peat moss spreader from Home Depot. $18-$25 for the day. You are right, it's a huge time saver and will save your back too!
I agree James, they are very pricey, there are cheaper versions, never tried them. But getting one with two or three neighbors should bring it to a more reasonable level.

That looks great. Do you top dress with just compost or are you using top soil or is it a top dressing mix? Couldn't see it in the video.
In this video I just used the most common topdress in Sweden, I would never recommend anyone to use this one though, so full of garbage, but for the sake of the test I wanted a popular brand. Normally I toppdress with a good compost or something that has a bit of sand in it as well so it can add some structure to the mix.
Problem with the 44” model is that when you pull it with a tractor it literally runs out within 15 seconds and spreads it too fast. You’ll spend more time loading up the landzie then actually rolling compost or peatmoss. IMO if you have a large yard and are looking to spread top dressing you may as well buy a large manure spreader to get the job done
Hey mate, good input, since I never used a tractor to pull anything like this I never consider that fact at all, but it sounds like that would not be the best option for the 44" model better to get a manure spreaderas you say, or renting one.

I have a landize im 6ft tall and the handle height is perfect for me.
I am exactly 6ft too, but I felt I had to bend my back a little bit too much. I might just be very picky.
Would you be able to save the larger debris for it to compost/ break down further?
Some of it could probable be saved and thrown into the compost, but a lot of it is rocks of different sizes.

Hey Matthew, no worries, ask as many questions you like and I will try to help as best as I can. I usually seed before top dressing it, that way the seed will get a light layer of top dressing on them and then I go over it with a garden roller to make sure I have good seed to soil contact.
Sam, Can I just use the brush instead of levelling rake?

For sure mate, the brush would work too. Or, just take a wooden pallet and tie two strings on it and drag it around the lawn. I did that for my renovation, cheap and easy. I have a video showing it, worked great. Then you can brush it in afterwards.
Are the gaps where the metal strips are on the baskets a problem? I can see little strips on the lawn where the compost doesn’t fall because of the metal strips.
Hey mate, well, they are in the way, no doubt about that, if you would run it on a clean surface you would probably see the gaps, but I haven't really found that to be an issue. I still think this is one of the tools I have that saves me the most time.

Thanks for your video. I have a 24" spreader like the one you used. It works great with 100% peat moss. However, my attempts to use it with a (80%topsoil, 20%peat) mix did not work very well - the mesh prevented much of the topsoil mix from being deposited. Also, the (80%topsoil, 20%peat) mix was heavy to move around. What is the name and the makeup of the material you used in your video? Thanks for your reply.
I use a Swedish brand callen hammenhog in the video, it is really a bad topdress, I would never use it normally, but this is the most sold brand in Sweden so that's why I used it for the video. I also have some issues getting topsoil through the mesh, but often that's due to the topdress being a bit too wet, if you let it dry in a wheelbarrow before then it works much better.
I've noticed some cheaper spreaders have too fine a mesh so it might be the spreader that's the problem not the soil.
I just want to add, too, just in case it will help anyone trying to decide. This year I only used Back to Nature Cotton Burr compost to topdress my lawn. It is highly recommended for both gardens and lawns, no matter your soil type. My area has the heaviest of heavy clay soil. Compost topdressing is the only recommendation for this soil type.

thanks for this review. i have a landzie. im curious of how many bags i need for a quarter acre. do you recommend top soil in bulk or bags? i think bags would be way easier so i dont have to wheel barrel soil around….you agree?
Hey mate, well, I have never done that large area before so cannot say from experience. I have about 2000 square feet and I usually need between 15-20 bags of 50 liters each. Also depends on how thick layer you want. You will have to get a lot more than me to cover your needs so it all depends on price I would say. We buy bags in Sweden mostly because getting soil in bulk is very expensive due to the shipping. The shipping is usually twice the amount of the actual soil. The advantage of getting bags is that, if you get too many, you could easily just save it for another time. Getting it in bulk, usually makes that a bit trickier. Sorry for the bad answer but hard question and it's mostly personal preference and what kind of wallet size you have :)

@@esantone0398 - I pick up free compost from the township; I recycle the plastic bags from when I bought bagged soil, and fill those with the free compost. Any container works of course.
So check if any nearby town will let you get some for free.

Hey Zachary, I wouldn't use it for that at all, its awesome to spread a light layer but filling in low spots is better done by hand I would say.

haha hey Ray, I know that's why I have been putting it off for so long, they are pricing, no denying it, but I am 100% honest I would have bought one anyways this year. Top dressing just takes too much time, this made it so much easier. Convince the neighbours they need one too and share one :D
@@saadkhalid8408 Hey dude, it usually takes me about 2 hours or more. Usually because I am very pedantic in spreading the stuff and removing the junk with a rake afterwards. You could probable do it in half the time if you hustle 😁🤙🏼

I like doing it with good quality soil since it helps the microbial life in the soil and also fertilizes the lawn in a natural way, so I really don´t see any negative aspects of doing it.
@@SamsLawn building loving soil in my eyes is always key but then do you also add chemical fertilizer?

Hey Mate, for sure, that is one problem, if whatever you are spreading is very wet, then it may get stuck. What I like to do is to empty the bags in a wheelbarrow and let it dry off for a bit before using it, makes it a lot easier.

Hoooly, that's a lot of top dressing mate, I almost want to say I guarantee it will make it 10 times easier. After using it this season I never want to top dress without it again. Let me know how you get along with yours, I only use it for much smaller amounts, interesting to hear how it holds up with eight ton :)

Hey Mate, for this video I just used the most sold top dress in Sweden, but it's junk to be honest, I would never use it normally, was just for the video and I wanted to use something that most people here use. Otherwise I would go for a more quality top dress with higher sand content, a finer top dress that has been screened.

Tjena Daniel, tack som sjutton. Jag ska försöka fixa svärföräldrarnas matta i år, den har nog mer ogräs än gräs, får se om man kan fixa den utan att börja om eller ha tillgång till massa kemikalier. Följ med på resan så får vi se. Lyckas jag inte så åker vi till USA och köper alla kemikalier vi kan hitta haha :D

It seems you have Syngenta in Sweden. They have a product that has the chemical called mesotrione that is effective on a large number of lawn weeds (but unfortunately not all weeds). You might want to see if you can get that. That chemical trade name from Syngenta in the USA is Tenacity.

Hey mate, this is just one of the cheapest ones I found nearby. I would never use this normally, it's called Hammenhög, Swedish brand. I try to go for the ones that are screened better and contain a bit more sand. In Sweden we have one called Rölunda, those are awesome
How many m2 per bag with the roller? Struggling to find any accurate data
Not sure about any exact numbers but in the test I used 3 bags, 120 liters with the roller and it was enough for about 70 m2
But it also depends how thick of a layer you want.

Hey mate, it's 40 liter bags and the bag says it should be enough for 15m2. But that also depends how thin or thick you want to spread it.

Hey Mate, well it can be so many things, in my case it could be a slightly high ph, could be grubs, could be that there is a stone under the soil there so the roots cannot grow, birds trying to get to worms in the lawn. There could be a lot of things, usually you can have a guess but no matter what it is the solution is the same, overseed :)
How thick does Delancey spread the compost
A very thin layer, just enough to cover the seeds. Some areas I wanted more so then you need to make a second pass since it's a very fine layer.

Hey Mate, it depends how thick layer I you want to put on your lawn, but if you only use the landzie and do one pass, it would take about 12-13 bags.
The larger landzie is hard to push when it's full.

What top dressing do you use
For this test I just got the most common top dressing sold in Sweden. It is absolutely horrible and I would not use it in any other case than this. Usually I get anything from Rölunda, which is a very good brand here in Sweden, always clean, weed free and has sand mixed in it.

I'm confused Sam, why didn't you get real soil instead of the bags of crappy suppose to be top soil. I've done what you did with those bags. I never knew the difference, but now I do. I pick up no sticks,no mulch, no crap. Otherwise, we're putting thatch back on our lawns. But I do have Bermuda.
Hey mate, I understand the confusion, normally I wouldn't buy these cheap bags of top dress since they do contain a lot of crap. But I wanted to do the video using the most common and most sold top dress in Sweden, not only to show the landzie at work but also show people what cheap top dress actually contain 😊

Hey mate, it's just some regular cheap top dressing, it's the most sold one in Sweden but also one of the worse, as you can see from the debris in the Landzie. I chose it since it is the most commonly used one, but I wouldn't recommend it. Try to find one that has been heat treated so it's weed free and also contains some sand as well.

I usually top dress during spring and do leveling during fall, with a top dress that is more sand based.

Hey John, it's just normal top dress, one of the most common ones in Sweden. We really don't use peat moss here, don't know any swede who does, just not a thing here, not sure why 🤔

Hey Dean, when I recorded this video we had just come out of spring and Swedish lawns look like this or even worse after our harsh winters, not much to do about it. Also I killed off the entire lawn after that week to reseed with different grass type, so didn't want to waste time making the lawn perfect after spring, so there are reasons for why it's blotchy and it will be blotchy after every winter here unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️

Hey Amit, yeah I agree, it's a great product but it is expensive. If I would buy it myself I would definitely share with someone, or try to rent it out via a service for homeowners in Sweden, to try and recover some or all of the cost. Although, now that I tried it, I have to say, it's worth the cost, makes lawn care so much easier, trust me :)
The slowest aspect of your process are the bags. Order your compost unbagged.
I agree, but in Sweden it is very very expensive to order anything in bulk. The materials are usually very cheap and the price of shipping is just ridiculous. Just as an example. 1000 kg of compost costs about 80 dollars, the shipping costs 360 dollars for that 1000 kg. So that's why the majority of people buy these in bags themselves.

Well, we always get bare spots, after our 5-6 months of winter, with a lot of snow and low temps we always end up with damages. Also we play a lot of soccer on this lawn, my son and his friends, they always manage to do some damage to the grass. So I end up with spots I need to repair every year, which I don't mind, I want a lawn that is used, not only to look at :)

He is right, that soil just disappears after a few days, then you have cut all that grass, I have 3 lawn mowers a spreader and all the other stuff, I had to build a shed to store all that stuff, I'm semi retired and I can't just sit in the house all day and look at computer, so that's why I waste my time on my lawn, ohh and top dressing is the best thing you can do for a lawn!!!

I agree, it is very expensive, sharing one would be better IF you are getting one. But I have to say, it is the lawn tool I use the most.
