If I wanted to advertise my product and send a product by my competitor as well for comparisson I would make sure my product looks as glossy and nice as it can be while I would bust up the competitors product and use it some time to make it look used and ugly. This way my product wins for the first impression.
I bought a landzie. What he showed is what I received from a finish standpoint. My door was slightly deformed causing my clips to not connect as well as I feel they should but still adequately secure for now. Overall, I was more than happy with the quality.

From what you said in the video Landzie sent you both rollers one of theirs and one of their competitors, peak season. In your reply here you said that both units were sent by the manufacturer. Ginja, there’s a better way. Use your seed spreader first to evenly see the yard then roll your peat moss over the top of it. Seed distribution is more even that way. Usually I slice the peat moss bag wide open and use a shovel to break up in the bag and shovel it into the spreader. If you really like that wheel barrow you can mix a little top soil into the peat moss but the key here is to seed first with a seed spreader then roll the moss over the top. This helps keep in moisture, germination, and lastly it hides the seed from birds... good luck
Never used Peak Moss, always used Redwood Compost. I'm pretty sure Redwood Compost is much cheaper. Also, I always liked applying fertilizer first, then seed, them compost. I liked to be able to see the coverage of each item and regulate it. Good Job

Great video; I have a compost spreader and love it. The only issue I have with mixing peat moss and grass seed is you don’t get to roll the seed in. I’m a big proponent of rolling ever since I noticed that spots I stepped on always came in better than spots I didn’t. Rolling peat moss never works out, you want to roll the seed first. I usually water the night before to get the soil soft and moist, use a rake to scuff up the soil that day, spread the seed, spray with tenacity, roll it, and then finialy apply peat moss with a compost spreader. I then spray lightly with a fine mist to lock down peat moss, then water again really well. One last tip, is that you can use a razor to cut the peat moss bales in half. A large bale cut in half loads perfectly in the spreader. No need to shovel it in. It makes it go by much quicker.
Had to be the BEST comparison video on the Landzie and it's competitor I've seen. Price was hard to swallow but after spreading peat moss by hand the last few years, I came to realize it would be well worth it. Just rent one for $10 a day. That way you dont have to store or maintain it, and you could rent one 30 times, before you would pay for it outright, that is 15-30 years of overseeding.
Thank you for the tip, as I am a new homeowner and I have to do this for my yard. I still need to get it level out. However, for now I will use this compost spreader with grass seeds, fertilizer mixed in the compost. This will save me a lot of time out in the NC heat. Did not have to do this in NY, so a girl got to do what she has to do to have a nice yard. Thank you so much.
The Home Depot near me rents peat moss spreaders that look very similar for about $9 for a 4-hour rental. This looks like a huge time-saver, I'm definitely trying it out on this spring! Just gotta keep the birds away this time!
@@WIG23 The way I've done it is get some reflective bird tape (big box store had a roll for like $5), and tie some strips onto some stakes or something similar (I had a bunch of plant support stakes the previous owner left). I have the strips long enough so that they almost touch the ground. They flap in the wind and the reflection scares the birds away. Worked pretty well in my experience. Didn't necessarily completely stop them but did a good enough job that they don't decimate the seed. Once I do the first mow I store them in the shed for the next time around, because there's always some spots I gotta patch.
@@hackettmark That's exactly what I was thinking. How much seed needed per sq ft is on the bag but how much peat moss to mix per pound of seed is a mystery.....at least to me it is. Did you ever figure it out ? My concern is that I end up putting too much peat moss down in order to get enough seed......and as Ginga said, scabs.
Yeah, honestly, the Peak had a better spread to my eyes. The fit and finish was trash, but in terms of throwing down with minimal gaps and lines it seemed like a no contest to me. Either way I'm in the camp of I can't see myself spending a couple to a few hundred on an item I'll use once to twice a year.
When it worked it worked great. I agree the overall spread was better. the issues I had, and hard to show on camera, is it didn't filter the debris as well. with that said if there's someone who doesn't mind fixing the unit or maintaining it after every use then it has value.
I'm convinced. Using a compost spreader with a seed/peat moss mixture appears to give a nice, even layer. I would try dragging a piece of chain-link fence afterwards to get it to settle down through the grass blades before watering.
i like using a stinger. its pulls cores and drops seed in the same pass. I do like this compost spreader for laying peat, as it saves considerable time vs a bucket full of peat n throwing it out.....all day work. For the average person this compost spreader works great to spread the seed peat mix or soil mix. As always your vids are fantastic!! Love how you have helped countless people on their yards!!

I never even considered mixing the peat moss and seed together but I really like that idea. I spread peat moss by hand over 4K square feet and it took forever! I definitely might consider this now but I’m still hesitant due to the price.
I hear you. I hardly do peat moss anymore, because it’s too time consuming. Last time I planted seed, I got too many bare spots, possibly from birds, so I’m gonna have to use peat moss going forward. I’m definitely buying one of these in the spring.

@@pestandlawnginja I had a couple spots in my lawn that I sprayed with tenacity to kill bent grass and I over seeded them this fall. They were small so I just hand sprinkled some Pete Moss over them and all of it came up perfectly even. Peat really helps a lot

After this year doing lawn for first time I realize this is a must for me. I noticed anywhere I had peat moss flourished much nicer than anywhere that did not. @@theturfnerd If you use the right type of nitrogen like amonium sulfate it will overwinter. urea overwintering is highly debateable. my opinion is it doesn't overwinter well.
Ginga most of us out here don't have the manufacturers send us gifts like you we're not famous but when you're at home Depot I rented mine this season for $11 a day why buy one they're bulky they're hard to store just rent for the day it's cheaper just a tip

I use an old, noisy Harbor Freight cement mixer to blend stuff. $100 used on Craigslist. It's a beauty for amending batches of whatever I want: Peat moss, compost, topsoil, sand, seed, ferts, preemergents, pesticides, fungicides, sulphur, potash, gypsum, iron... allows my mad scientist to come out and really express itself!
I use 1.25 bails of peat per 1000 sqft. mix 2-5lbs of seed per 1000 sq ft if i'm doing a general overseed. for sparse or barespot i use 7 to 15lbs of seed per 1000 sq ft.
I've had the Landzie for a couple seasons now. I usually lightly rake a cross hatch pattern after spreading. That takes care of most of those gaps. The other weakness it has is slopes. You will need to roll directly up or down the slope. If you roll across the slope, the material will fall to the downhill side in the barrel and spread unevenly left to right. All that said, you definitely hit the nail on the head with the latches and the filtering. The Landzie shines with those. I hadn't thought of adding the seed to the top dressing. That's a killer idea. Too late this season, but I'll keep that in mind for next time.
I reviewed this product this year to, I really like the idea of rolling it across the driveway, really shows what works and what doesn't. I saw a review of it where they used a sandy soil and this was the wrong material for it IMO. Nice video.
@@derekg3035 results have been great. there are some heavy winter shaded areas that haven't germinated and a chunch where the kids have walked on that didn't. Other than that it over wintered fantastically.
That looks like the way to go for overseeding. I just did my overseeding and I put all the peat moss down by hand. This method looks way, way better. Really, if you are going to be overseeding twice a year, every year, this seems like a worthwhile investment.
Thanks for the great comparison. I purchased a 36 inch to do my very large back yard. My yard has a very steep hill 25-35 degrees in some areas and this really worked great but was definitely a lot of work. My backyard is also about 16,000Sq Feet. It does not work very well on hills unless you go up the hill so that the roller is as level as possible but otherwise it performed well and saved a lot of raking.
who cares about the paint job, it's going to get ding up on first use or storage. they both should offer a water bladder so the roller can also be used a lawn roller.

And Landzie has also a tow behind model, which is 44” wide and priced at $699.99 CAD with the same shipping fee of $35.00. Now that is very interesting, especially for larger lawn. The other brand that is available on Amazon, as I can see, is a Seymour 85755 priced at $365.56 CAD but it looks like to be smaller in size at 24” x 18”. Hey Ninja, I was in the same predicament, did not want to spend too much money on a peat moth spreader so I bought the cheaper one for $160 plus free shipping. I also noticed the cheap lock that came with it so I ordered a luggage latch from Amazon for $4 and just welded it on and it works fine. Since you only use it a few times a year if that I rather save $200 and get something that is a little rough around the edges and that works. Love your videos, keep up the great job.

“ might” is the key word. Once I get the lawn going I’m not going to need a spreader again. Same thing for having a trailer or a pickup truck. Too bad rental places near me don’t offer peat spreaders. 😢

The spreaders are a game changer. I used it for peat moss and while I won't bother buying one to have to store it, I was able to rent an abused one from HD. Even with the latch being a PITA it saved me so much time. I will never not use one, twice a year... lol It definitely made for a more efficient application.
I acquired my Peak compost spreader from an Ace Hardware company going out of business for about $40 years upon years ago. Just used it yesterday as a matter of fact to spread my compost redressing and reseeding my front lawn. I didn't mix the seed into the compost but I can see how that would have saved so much time. What I don't like about spreaders is if the material is wet the material will start to clog the holes causing uneven coverage no matter if it be the Landzie or the Peak. I like the larger door swing opening of the Landzie vs the limited opening of the sliding door of the Peak. And yes mostly moist material will inhibit the sliding doors ease. Although my Peak spreader might be decades old and left outside it has weathered and dealt with oxidation extremely well. My Peak compost spreader is a vital part of my home owner yard maintenance equipment. Which means if you have a yard you gotta have one as well as a roller which I use to press the seeds against the soil to help with germination and other roller duties.

Dude, so Landzie sends the competitors product that they obviously pushed off the back of a truck a few dozen times to wreck it. Talking about the packaging and the paint job like it's a new one. The sell out curve for the ginja has been steep.
First I used my Sunjoe to de-thatch and scarify my lawn. I used my Landzie to put down compost, then seeded with a broadcast spreader then used the Landzie to apply peat moss. Watered for a couple of weeks and my lawn looks greener and new grass is filling in a few bad spots. Some one asked how to empty the big stuff out, I just lifted the Landzie up over my trash can and opened the door, most if it fell right out, used my had to scoop out the rest. I like your idea of mixing the seed with the peat moss, I’ll try that next spring.
I’ve went to buy one of these last year expecting it to be 100-150 bucks... refuse to pay 300... idk where the justification for that price comes from... seems like a they have a 1100% markup

Informative post. Aerating front/back yards tomorrow and was pondering best way to evenly return plug contents to the soil before reseeding/overseeding. Given your spreader suggestion, will pulverize the plugs with a shovel/rake in a wheelbarrow, in addition to mixing lawn soil and seed. Thank you very much.
I think the test on cement where the gap between the ground and spreader expanded metal is small amplified the lines. On grass it would be less an issue . You didn't show how you emptied the big chunks? The crap compost you can get these days has so much coarse uncompleted crap it makes you worry that the pile didnt get hot enough to kill weed seeds. It seems mixing the seeds in with compost has many problems. Your mixing in such a full wheel barrow surely didnt get a good mix. The seeds can be on top or middle of the compost layer. Peat seems to flow so much with even a slight slope during watering your seeds ate not going to cover very evenly. The seeds on top will dry out so quickly. Best to use hand spreader for the seed which is easy. Then cover with the compost spreader. Your lawn has so many bare spots? You mow your putting green grass so low and not level? My lawns have never needed seeding except in trouble spots. Tell us how planting all this competing grass helps the old grass? I think you need to do a screening test on all the big box products and reveal how poor they are. My home compost never has those fresh looking small wood chips. I think these compost places are mixing in these wood chips in near the end of composting to stretch their products.
Hey elkski! Really appreciate the comment. I trashed my back yard from my spring leveling project. I had soo many contractors coming this summer so there wasn't any incentive to fix any of it until after the boarder edgers, trees, landscapers and sprinkler repairs were made. As for the large area in the back that is sparse and bald...... I have mostly shade. The mazama grass seed I'm using is pushing really well. Nothing else will grow there due to the amount of shade. Has nothing to do with mowing low. my front yard is thicker than most peoples and I mow it at .6". As for the compost spreader. Yes I over applied the peat moss in the barrell. shows better for the camera. I spent more time than showed on camera mixing the grass seed in. it mixed really well. shockingly the peat doesn't clump as much as you'd think once you mix it. Once the peat is wet it sticks to the grass seed. People have been doing this method for years because it works. There is a trade off though. Peat inherintly can be a tad acidic. so areas that have lower ph will commonly have to use lime when they do an application of peat and seed. There's also no compost wood chips in peat moss which is a huge benefit. If you're using cheap top soil like I demonstrated, there will be wood chips in most bags. I hate to say it but the miracle grow product in the blue bag was the best. spread soo nicely. If i were to do a 50 50 blend I would use that and the peat moss.
Yes i remember you have lots of shade in the backyard near the patio and where the tramp was plus its wet. And you did the edging. Is it to late to plant grass seed now in SL County?
Good demo for both products. Either one would work for me. Makes peat moss a viable option for top dressing. A couple of weeks ago I over-seeded with a medium of vermiculite/composted steer manure (3-1 ratio). Neighbors loved the smell.... Made the mistake of applying it at the beginning of a 90 degree to 100 degree heat wave, but the water holding property of vermiculite worked out well for this case. Germination rate has been excellent.
id say the peak won. less gaps and i would want the chucks in my yard. that's extra organic material that would break down over time. i dont like the clamps on either, i use big leather gloves and those latches looked troublesome. Are you not going to mention the size difference. less filling up with the bigger one. you kept hammering the finish, but how many people care they have a perfect finish, it sounded like you just needed something to be better since they gave you stuff. now, do your civic duty and order your own Peak to see if when you buy it, it has a better finish to make sure nothing was rigged.
The argument is the sticks in the lawn become a pain in the butt. they always float to the top, causes problems with the mowers as well and getting one in the foot is always a pain.

I bought the Landzie compost spreader last month and used it with super moisut soil mix prior to overseeding. I should have gotten Peat moss as well.. Peat moss would be easier to roll. I had a hard time pushing the spreader with soil mix.. it was heavy and yes, more chunks come out 🤪! Great comparison video Ginja! I was focusing on pushing it and didn't really pay attention to gaps. Good to know!! Thank you for this video!!
Horse people have this thing called a 'newer spreader' that has a metal grinder that spins when engaged and will grind up any horse turds, loose bedding etc into a fine powder. I want to get one to easily top dress my side yard and pasture! That way I can spread seed and easily cover it up with a thin layer of soil and manure afterwards.
Looks like a great way to get an even layer down, much better than the vacuum/blower method I used on my most recent renovation; low peat fogging across the yard.

I use my Landzie to spread my top dressing. Get a truck load of compost from the landscaping yard, load my 2 ft2 wheelbarrow, and then dump that into my Landzie. Works great and spreads evenly.
You might think this is crazy, but I mix things like concrete, plus animal grain, seed mixes, more than one type of potting soil etc in my cement mixer. Nice even distribution of materials and it pours right out of the mixer into the wheelbarrow. My mixer though, have to admit has been outfitted with extendable/adjustable legs. It is an old heavy steel one with electric belt driven and gear. Of course for your task a lighter weight one would work just as well and be easier to put into/out of trailer. Mine had a gas engine on it when I got it. nice demo. I learned a long time ago that going over a yard twice with fertilizer etc makes it more even.

Very, very nice!!! One thing thou..... My biggest issue is with birds eating my seed. I know that if I put the seed down first then use the lanzing to put down the peat moss or compost or whatever, really thin layers, I don't have near the problems with the birds. Also I used the product called futura netting on top of that to help keep the seed from flowing because of very bad torrential rain storms or high winds and even keeping the birds off. I used both at the same time, but I did. I would love to see you do the same thing with a product called Future F4 lawn netting. It's especially awesome if you have a fairly sloped lawn. Lawn erosion on steep hills is a major pain in the butt.
soo true. the peat detours a few species but its not a saving grace. you can always seed first, compact the seed into the soil then run the compost spreader last and roll it again. Glad you found something you like. that's awesome.

What mix ratio did you use for the seed to Peat moss????
If I wanted to advertise my product and send a product by my competitor as well for comparisson I would make sure my product looks as glossy and nice as it can be while I would bust up the competitors product and use it some time to make it look used and ugly. This way my product wins for the first impression.

I bought a landzie. What he showed is what I received from a finish standpoint. My door was slightly deformed causing my clips to not connect as well as I feel they should but still adequately secure for now. Overall, I was more than happy with the quality.
Both spreaders were sent directly to me from the manufacturer to avoid this issue. Valid question though. love it.

From what you said in the video Landzie sent you both rollers one of theirs and one of their competitors, peak season. In your reply here you said that both units were sent by the manufacturer. Ginja, there’s a better way. Use your seed spreader first to evenly see the yard then roll your peat moss over the top of it. Seed distribution is more even that way. Usually I slice the peat moss bag wide open and use a shovel to break up in the bag and shovel it into the spreader. If you really like that wheel barrow you can mix a little top soil into the peat moss but the key here is to seed first with a seed spreader then roll the moss over the top. This helps keep in moisture, germination, and lastly it hides the seed from birds... good luck

Never used Peak Moss, always used Redwood Compost. I'm pretty sure Redwood Compost is much cheaper. Also, I always liked applying fertilizer first, then seed, them compost. I liked to be able to see the coverage of each item and regulate it. Good Job

Great video; I have a compost spreader and love it. The only issue I have with mixing peat moss and grass seed is you don’t get to roll the seed in. I’m a big proponent of rolling ever since I noticed that spots I stepped on always came in better than spots I didn’t. Rolling peat moss never works out, you want to roll the seed first.
I usually water the night before to get the soil soft and moist, use a rake to scuff up the soil that day, spread the seed, spray with tenacity, roll it, and then finialy apply peat moss with a compost spreader. I then spray lightly with a fine mist to lock down peat moss, then water again really well.
One last tip, is that you can use a razor to cut the peat moss bales in half. A large bale cut in half loads perfectly in the spreader. No need to shovel it in. It makes it go by much quicker.

I use the old fashion roller filled with water...talk about making seed to soil contact. The roller with the water is probably 300lbs.

Just rent one for $10 a day. That way you dont have to store or maintain it, and you could rent one 30 times, before you would pay for it outright, that is 15-30 years of overseeding.

However, for now I will use this compost spreader with grass seeds, fertilizer mixed in the compost. This will save me a lot of time out in the NC heat. The Home Depot near me rents peat moss spreaders that look very similar for about $9 for a 4-hour rental. This looks like a huge time-saver, I'm definitely trying it out on this spring! Just gotta keep the birds away this time!

@@WIG23 The way I've done it is get some reflective bird tape (big box store had a roll for like $5), and tie some strips onto some stakes or something similar (I had a bunch of plant support stakes the previous owner left). I have the strips long enough so that they almost touch the ground. They flap in the wind and the reflection scares the birds away. Worked pretty well in my experience. Didn't necessarily completely stop them but did a good enough job that they don't decimate the seed. Once I do the first mow I store them in the shed for the next time around, because there's always some spots I gotta patch.

@@hackettmark That's exactly what I was thinking. How much seed needed per sq ft is on the bag but how much peat moss to mix per pound of seed is a mystery.....at least to me it is. Did you ever figure it out ? My concern is that I end up putting too much peat moss down in order to get enough seed......and as Ginga said, scabs.
Yeah, honestly, the Peak had a better spread to my eyes. The fit and finish was trash, but in terms of throwing down with minimal gaps and lines it seemed like a no contest to me. Either way I'm in the camp of I can't see myself spending a couple to a few hundred on an item I'll use once to twice a year.
When it worked it worked great. I agree the overall spread was better. the issues I had, and hard to show on camera, is it didn't filter the debris as well. with that said if there's someone who doesn't mind fixing the unit or maintaining it after every use then it has value.

I'm convinced. Using a compost spreader with a seed/peat moss mixture appears to give a nice, even layer. I would try dragging a piece of chain-link fence afterwards to get it to settle down through the grass blades before watering.

I do like this compost spreader for laying peat, as it saves considerable time vs a bucket full of peat n throwing it out.....all day work. For the average person this compost spreader works great to spread the seed peat mix or soil mix.

I never even considered mixing the peat moss and seed together but I really like that idea. I spread peat moss by hand over 4K square feet and it took forever! I definitely might consider this now but I’m still hesitant due to the price.
I hear you. I hardly do peat moss anymore, because it’s too time consuming. Last time I planted seed, I got too many bare spots, possibly from birds, so I’m gonna have to use peat moss going forward. I’m definitely buying one of these in the spring.

I've been using one of these for years. It's easier and more reliable to put your seed down with a push spreader first, then just cover it.

After this year doing lawn for first time I realize this is a must for me. I noticed anywhere I had peat moss flourished much nicer than anywhere that did not. Plus, trying to throw by hand takes way too long and doesn't spread evenly. After watching this video I decided it is a must have for me!

Ginga most of us out here don't have the manufacturers send us gifts like you we're not famous but when you're at home Depot I rented mine this season for $11 a day why buy one they're bulky they're hard to store just rent for the day it's cheaper just a tip
Agreed, but the 1 I got from HD was really beat up and wouldn’t stay closed. With that said, I would still go with the rental route.
The latch on mine died a long time ago, I just use zip ties to keep it closed. A little annoying, but works well for the few times I use mine.

I use an old, noisy Harbor Freight cement mixer to blend stuff. $100 used on Craigslist.
It's a beauty for amending batches of whatever I want: Peat moss, compost, topsoil, sand, seed, ferts, preemergents, pesticides, fungicides, sulphur, potash, gypsum, iron... allows my mad scientist to come out and really express itself!

I've had the Landzie for a couple seasons now. I usually lightly rake a cross hatch pattern after spreading. That takes care of most of those gaps. The other weakness it has is slopes. You will need to roll directly up or down the slope. If you roll across the slope, the material will fall to the downhill side in the barrel and spread unevenly left to right. All that said, you definitely hit the nail on the head with the latches and the filtering. The Landzie shines with those. I hadn't thought of adding the seed to the top dressing. That's a killer idea. Too late this season, but I'll keep that in mind for next time.

@@derekg3035 results have been great. there are some heavy winter shaded areas that haven't germinated and a chunch where the kids have walked on that didn't. Other than that it over wintered fantastically.
That looks like the way to go for overseeding. I just did my overseeding and I put all the peat moss down by hand. This method looks way, way better. Really, if you are going to be overseeding twice a year, every year, this seems like a worthwhile investment.

Thanks for the great comparison. I purchased a 36 inch to do my very large back yard. My yard has a very steep hill 25-35 degrees in some areas and this really worked great but was definitely a lot of work. My backyard is also about 16,000Sq Feet. It does not work very well on hills unless you go up the hill so that the roller is as level as possible but otherwise it performed well and saved a lot of raking.
who cares about the paint job, it's going to get ding up on first use or storage. they both should offer a water bladder so the roller can also be used a lawn roller.

I always wanted one also but same as you, the price is kind of stop me in my tracks. On Amazon, the Landzie (same model you tested) is priced at $499.99 CAD and the shipping fee is $35.00 CAD. And Landzie has also a tow behind model, which is 44” wide and priced at $699.99 CAD with the same shipping fee of $35.00. Now that is very interesting, especially for larger lawn. The other brand that is available on Amazon, as I can see, is a Seymour 85755 priced at $365.56 CAD but it looks like to be smaller in size at 24” x 18”.

Hey Ninja, I was in the same predicament, did not want to spend too much money on a peat moth spreader so I bought the cheaper one for $160 plus free shipping. I also noticed the cheap lock that came with it so I ordered a luggage latch from Amazon for $4 and just welded it on and it works fine. Since you only use it a few times a year if that I rather save $200 and get something that is a little rough around the edges and that works. Love your videos, keep up the great job.

Agreed Steve, I asked the best rental company in my area and they never heard of it before! Hoping these will become more common and I’ll rent these whenever I want to overseed.
I found that Home Depot was renting them in my area for $8 for 24 hours.
The spreaders are a game changer. I used it for peat moss and while I won't bother buying one to have to store it, I was able to rent an abused one from HD. Even with the latch being a PITA it saved me so much time. I will never not use one, twice a year... lol It definitely made for a more efficient application.

I acquired my Peak compost spreader from an Ace Hardware company going out of business for about $40 years upon years ago. Just used it yesterday as a matter of fact to spread my compost redressing and reseeding my front lawn. I didn't mix the seed into the compost but I can see how that would have saved so much time. What I don't like about spreaders is if the material is wet the material will start to clog the holes causing uneven coverage no matter if it be the Landzie or the Peak. I like the larger door swing opening of the Landzie vs the limited opening of the sliding door of the Peak. And yes mostly moist material will inhibit the sliding doors ease. Although my Peak spreader might be decades old and left outside it has weathered and dealt with oxidation extremely well. My Peak compost spreader is a vital part of my home owner yard maintenance equipment. Which means if you have a yard you gotta have one as well as a roller which I use to press the seeds against the soil to help with germination and other roller duties.

First I used my Sunjoe to de-thatch and scarify my lawn. I used my Landzie to put down compost, then seeded with a broadcast spreader then used the Landzie to apply peat moss. Watered for a couple of weeks and my lawn looks greener and new grass is filling in a few bad spots. Some one asked how to empty the big stuff out, I just lifted the Landzie up over my trash can and opened the door, most if it fell right out, used my had to scoop out the rest. I like your idea of mixing the seed with the peat moss, I’ll try that next spring.

Given your spreader suggestion, will pulverize the plugs with a shovel/rake in a wheelbarrow, in addition to mixing lawn soil and seed. Thank you very much.

I think the test on cement where the gap between the ground and spreader expanded metal is small amplified the lines. On grass it would be less an issue . You didn't show how you emptied the big chunks? The crap compost you can get these days has so much coarse uncompleted crap it makes you worry that the pile didnt get hot enough to kill weed seeds. It seems mixing the seeds in with compost has many problems. Your mixing in such a full wheel barrow surely didnt get a good mix. The seeds can be on top or middle of the compost layer. Peat seems to flow so much with even a slight slope during watering your seeds ate not going to cover very evenly. The seeds on top will dry out so quickly. Best to use hand spreader for the seed which is easy. Then cover with the compost spreader. Your lawn has so many bare spots? You mow your putting green grass so low and not level? My lawns have never needed seeding except in trouble spots. Tell us how planting all this competing grass helps the old grass? I think you need to do a screening test on all the big box products and reveal how poor they are. My home compost never has those fresh looking small wood chips. I think these compost places are mixing in these wood chips in near the end of composting to stretch their products.
Hey elkski! Really appreciate the comment. I trashed my back yard from my spring leveling project. I had soo many contractors coming this summer so there wasn't any incentive to fix any of it until after the boarder edgers, trees, landscapers and sprinkler repairs were made. As for the large area in the back that is sparse and bald...... I have mostly shade. The mazama grass seed I'm using is pushing really well. Nothing else will grow there due to the amount of shade. Has nothing to do with mowing low. my front yard is thicker than most peoples and I mow it at .6".
As for the compost spreader. Yes I over applied the peat moss in the barrell. shows better for the camera. I spent more time than showed on camera mixing the grass seed in. it mixed really well. shockingly the peat doesn't clump as much as you'd think once you mix it. Once the peat is wet it sticks to the grass seed. People have been doing this method for years because it works. There is a trade off though. Peat inherintly can be a tad acidic. so areas that have lower ph will commonly have to use lime when they do an application of peat and seed. There's also no compost wood chips in peat moss which is a huge benefit.
If you're using cheap top soil like I demonstrated, there will be wood chips in most bags. I hate to say it but the miracle grow product in the blue bag was the best. spread soo nicely. If i were to do a 50 50 blend I would use that and the peat moss.
I used soil and compost from like 5 different companies and every one had the wood chips in them.
Yes i remember you have lots of shade in the backyard near the patio and where the tramp was plus its wet. And you did the edging. Is it to late to plant grass seed now in SL County?

Good demo for both products. Either one would work for me. Makes peat moss a viable option for top dressing.
A couple of weeks ago I over-seeded with a medium of vermiculite/composted steer manure (3-1 ratio). Neighbors loved the smell.... Made the mistake of applying it at the beginning of a 90 degree to 100 degree heat wave, but the water holding property of vermiculite worked out well for this case. Germination rate has been excellent.

id say the peak won. less gaps and i would want the chucks in my yard. that's extra organic material that would break down over time. i dont like the clamps on either, i use big leather gloves and those latches looked troublesome. Are you not going to mention the size difference. less filling up with the bigger one. you kept hammering the finish, but how many people care they have a perfect finish, it sounded like you just needed something to be better since they gave you stuff. now, do your civic duty and order your own Peak to see if when you buy it, it has a better finish to make sure nothing was rigged.
The argument is the sticks in the lawn become a pain in the butt. they always float to the top, causes problems with the mowers as well and getting one in the foot is always a pain.

I bought the Landzie compost spreader last month and used it with super moisut soil mix prior to overseeding. I should have gotten Peat moss as well.. Peat moss would be easier to roll. I had a hard time pushing the spreader with soil mix.. it was heavy and yes, more chunks come out 🤪! Great comparison video Ginja! I was focusing on pushing it and didn't really pay attention to gaps. Good to know!! Thank you for this video!!

Horse people have this thing called a 'newer spreader' that has a metal grinder that spins when engaged and will grind up any horse turds, loose bedding etc into a fine powder. I want to get one to easily top dress my side yard and pasture! That way I can spread seed and easily cover it up with a thin layer of soil and manure afterwards.

I use my Landzie to spread my top dressing. Get a truck load of compost from the landscaping yard, load my 2 ft2 wheelbarrow, and then dump that into my Landzie. Works great and spreads evenly.
You might think this is crazy, but I mix things like concrete, plus animal grain, seed mixes, more than one type of potting soil etc in my cement mixer. Nice even distribution of materials and it pours right out of the mixer into the wheelbarrow. My mixer though, have to admit has been outfitted with extendable/adjustable legs. It is an old heavy steel one with electric belt driven and gear. Of course for your task a lighter weight one would work just as well and be easier to put into/out of trailer. Mine had a gas engine on it when I got it. nice demo. I learned a long time ago that going over a yard twice with fertilizer etc makes it more even.

2. 6-10lbs of seed per 1000 sq ft.
3. peat cannot be wet. but damp is ok.

Very, very nice!!! One thing thou..... My biggest issue is with birds eating my seed. I know that if I put the seed down first then use the lanzing to put down the peat moss or compost or whatever, really thin layers, I don't have near the problems with the birds. Also I used the product called futura netting on top of that to help keep the seed from flowing because of very bad torrential rain storms or high winds and even keeping the birds off. I used both at the same time, but I did. I would love to see you do the same thing with a product called Future F4 lawn netting. It's especially awesome if you have a fairly sloped lawn. Lawn erosion on steep hills is a major pain in the butt.
soo true. the peat detours a few species but its not a saving grace. you can always seed first, compact the seed into the soil then run the compost spreader last and roll it again. Glad you found something you like. that's awesome.
