    Great review. I’ve a 2016. The two things I’d appreciate are cornering ABS, and tubeless tyres, both unfortunately missing from the RS. So it’s still a keeper. The only other thing which would surpass any such niggles is decent tarmac. The Spanish variety would be pure heaven for a Thruxton. I can dream!

    Great review John. I have the Speed Twin from Triumph UK at the moment, while it is absolute excellent for most types of road riding I've had it way out of shape when pushing on. We absolutely NEED a Speed Twin R.

    I was lucky enough to own a 1970 T120R (small tank) in my last year of high school. I almost failed my exams because all I wanted to do was ride my bike. To my mind the best looking Triumph ever made. The newer versions are undoubtedly better technology, but the sound of that bike slays the new models.

    " warm up quicker than a teaspoon in a microwave" 😂😂 love it. I am ex fireblade, R1 rider. Loving my Thruxton RS. Did begrudge having to pay for pillion setup though. Other than that great looks and fun to ride even in town. Which was a ball ache on the race reps.

      I had a Street Triple 675 for 3 years. Went out for a test ride on a Thruxton, came back and traded in the Street Triple on the spot. I've also ridden the Street 765 and couldn't wait to get back on the Thruxon afterwards. It's torquey, looks stunning and is great fun to ride.

    Clip on handlebars are for youngsters and the Thruxton tank and seat aren't my style. When they upgraded the Speed Twin I had to check it out at my local dealer. As soon as I sat on it, I knew it was my new streetbike. Such a great platform to customize! By next week I'll have over 25 mods done to my '22.

    Great informative review I got one of the very first 2016 R models as I ordered it at the a Motor Show in Thailand had to wait 6 months its got through a lot of upgrades probably cost me double the purchase price it’s a keeper and very special for many reasons I agree the speed twin is a looker I was tempted to have one as well so easy to ride around the city Bangkok due to the high bars maybe I will get one let’s see...!!!

    To better align the aesthetics with the classic designation, why doesn’t Triumph get rid of the tank’s ugly pinch-weld like they’ve done on their T120 scrambler?

    Another great review of a lovely machine. So the lighter engine and reworked clutch was on the Speed Twin first, the Thruxton RS second, but the good front end on the Thruxton RS... it would suggest that there might be a Speed Twin R with the good front end coming soon. Triumph keeps saying no, but what do you think?

  • @landseverywhere2155

    Great review, just subbed..
    So is the RS worth the jump in the price from the R?
    Granted if money is not an issue answer is obvious, but if one is on a budget, better to save for the RS?
    Coming from a Cruiser (Indian Challenger) the Thruxton will be my Cafe weekend bike..possibly commuter now & then.

    • @johnhogan8816
      @johnhogan8816 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is, Paul. More power and less weight are the holy grail of model upgrades and this bike ticks those boxes. Overall I think it’s a better bike than just the numbers allude to as well, it’s worth a test ride at least.

    Quite the salesman. I have a standard with that plain old fork and I doubt I'd notice any difference with that or any of the other minor changes outside of maybe a racetrack. It handles being tossed around backroads with reckless abandon without protest.
    I do agree with the looks part, but why anyone would buy a blacked out classic Triumph is beyond me. It looks classic alright, just like my 1986 Honda Nighthawk. If I wanted a classically styled Jap bike, I'd buy the Kawasaki.

    Id trade in my 2016 R for an RS if I could get a similar gloss metallic silver one like the one I have now but they don't make them in that colour anymore. The plain gloss silver is just so beautiful I know I would not be happy with anything less. Even in 2019 when I bought my R the new ones which I wanted only came in mat silver metallic so I had to search for a used gloss metallic one.

  • @Lar308
    @Lar308 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought the RS model was in addition to the R model. From the narration here where it referred to the R as the "old bike" it gives the impression that the R is no longer in production? Also for me the Thruxton R is all about bling and style (yes I know I am shallow). I could not give a fiddlers about how fast it goes or stops but its nice that it does both very well. So the blacked out engine covers and that mat finish with the red stripe spoil the design a bit by reducing the bling.

    • @daniellekoran7906

      Covid-19 currently has all Thruxton trim levels other than the RS halted, as they were early production to get them into dealerships.

    • @jamesdarnell8568
      @jamesdarnell8568 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have read that the cure for the brake squeal is to find a straight empty country road, get up to speed, and then jump on the brakes hard. Do this 4 or 5 times to get the pads really hot. Then turn the bike off and let the pads cool down to ambient temperature. After they have cooled, you're good to go with no squeal. Triumph lawyers don't want the liability of telling riders to do this. First, it makes Triumph look bad; second, anybody hurt doing this might sue Triumph if this was a recommended solution; and finally, just sending out replacement brake pads of a different compound would cost Triumph a lot of money. Hence the rather stupid position that "this is a feature of this model".

    Why oh why has Triumph not released a Speed Twin R or RS?!!!!! The Speed Twin with the Ohlins, upside down Showa's, Cast aluminium wheels and Brembo's etc would be an amazing bike. If I could afford it I'd buy a Thruxton R and Speed Twin and mash them together. Triumph must have entertained the idea as these spy shots of the Speed Twin show:

    Nice bike ........13k computer nanny's on a mid level performance machine
    Not so much. No performance comparison but I paid 7k for my 16 scrambler new. Have owned a few Triumph's over the years loved them all for what they were. Now Triumph seems to be trying to imitate HD expensive motorcycles sold in boutiques with 50 dollar tee shirts.

    • @jamesdarnell8568
      @jamesdarnell8568 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lagging behind HD has proven to be an opportunity. It provides Triumph the chance to observe the current HD economic crash and burn and to realize the HD business model is not a good one to copy. They have a chance to reverse course before it's too late. The question is: Will they?

    Stunning to look at, but ...Why is *slow* a requirement for a retro bike in 2020? The Thruxton has Fazer 600 performance which was the "ladies' bike" . Tell me that a 1200 twin cannot produce more than 103bhp? It's one of the best handling bikes in the world , it just needs an engine.
    Im sorry but i have deja-vue...In the 70s British bikes remaining , were a laughing stock - slow , old fashioned and unreliable , yet reliably left for dead by Yamaha RD350s and Kawasaki Z1s. The Thruxton 1200RS revisits it's slow Bonneville heritage. ...it's pretty, slow.
