    I went to a hypnotist 35 years ago to stop smoking (which worked) and while I was there I told him about how I get angry sometimes for little things. He got me to count down from ten to one and on each breath said I would become more and more relaxed. This many years later it still works. Ten deep breaths and keep my mouth shut works wonders. If it helps one person I’m happy! ✌️

      The breathing exercises always works for me too, but it’s not really practical when the situation is in your face. Like let’s say it’s a coworker or boss that’s pissing me off. I can’t just close my eyes and count to ten while it’s happening.

    When you are being taunted or harassed in such a way that you feel suffocated then keeping all that anger inside is actually going to blow you up.Speak up and get things out of your chest but do it in such a manner that after 5minutes of venting your frustrations you keep quiet and go peacefully to rest in your separate space

      In my humble opinion, and with all due respect, I don't think this works in all cases. It's a more "situational" solution. Although I agree that holding your anger inside for too long will "blow you up", the methodology that you mentioned can only work if you are in a mental state where you can control your anger at least a bit, in some manner. Which would allow you to still think before you say, as well as allowing you to "hold up" the reaction that whatever you said might cause to whom you vented out and have the problem with. Especially if you vent out for as long as 5 minutes. I know for a fact that there are many people that can't even hold 10 seconds of listening someone. Even less if it's someone they have the problem with. No matter how precautious you are with your words. This will potentially cause a feedback loop of constant (verbal, or even worse, physical) aggression. Which naturally wouldn't end up well.
      This is a good segue to my next point: Those who can't control their anger at all, won't be able to reason much. So their minds aren't in a state to do that "extra" thinking to mitigate whatever they want to vent out in a controlled way. So in this case, something like "keeping themselves quiet for ten minutes" and going away from the place or person that caused you to get angry is a better approach. This approach (IMO) is more simple because it doesn't require the "extra" thinking you would need to do, to say things in a "controlled" manner. That way, you can even "vent out" somewhere else if you like, where it's safe for everyone (and yourself). This also would help you to train your mind to get better and better at controlling such energy within yourself. Just like lifting weights. Which eventually can help you to be in a mind state where exercising what you recommended is doable, and still, I would be very cautious about venting out for as long as 5 minutes.
      The way I see it, anger is like fire. Or in other words: To me, fire works as a great analogy and comparative to anger. When uncontrolled and unchecked, it can burn everything (including yourself). It can make things explode (including yourself from within as well, but as I mentioned before, this can be worked on). It can spread to others, whom might not have the ability to control anger either. Thus creating a domino effect. The worst part: It might leave scars that can never be heal. However, if we learn how to control it, it gives us an incredible potential. Also, as far as I know, there's no way to control or turn off literal fire with more fire. No matter how "controlled" that fire is. You either pour water on it, or even better, cut its source of air off from it. Thus making the solution that the monk gave to the lady not far from reality. Put water drops in our tongue, or cut the air off the words coming to our mind (AKA silence).

      However the flip side of that is you have to know your source. You can get things out in a positive respectful manner but the other person can take offense...which is their issue and not yours.

    A boss had told me once when I was interning, " when angry, just get up, excuse yourself silently from that situation, go some place that's out of sight of many people and exhale heavily as if you are taking out the built up inside. Wash your face and come back after a few minutes. " It really works.
    Don't keep it inside. After that situation is over, parallely also look for a long term solution to this anger problem.

    Something valuable that I once heard is that anger is almost always hiding a more vulnerable feeling (we often jump to anger instead of other feelings because we don’t want to feel the more vulnerable things or are afraid of being vulnerable) so when you come across anger in yourself or another person, step back and find out what the real feelings are that the anger is covering, and address those feelings.
    I think pairing that advice with the advice in this video would produce the best results because it give the anger time too cool so that you can address the situation calmly, but also looks at what triggered the anger so that, over time, you will reduce the things that make the feelings flare to anger in the first place. If you don’t work on the cause of the anger you can end up still being eaten alive by anger and bitterness internally even though you no longer express it outwardly, which can cause other issues like health problems or mental health issues.

      i feel that you cannot reduce the things that make you angry as that is usually something you want the other person to do which they will never do for you .. you cant force that person .. silence can only help us to not flare up again when such things happen as such things will always happen is what my experience tells as everybody in this world wont act or do things as you like and you cant force them also ..

      @@sarans96 yes, you can’t change another person’s actions, but you can address what it is in yourself that is allowing the person’s actions to effect you so much. Does it make you feel powerless when they act that way? Well then work out why that bothers you so much that it makes you want to lash out. Does it make you feel like that person is treating you like you’re stupid and that’s what makes you angry? Well what vulnerability in you makes that such a trigger point? How can you work on feeling better about that so that it isn’t such a sore point anymore even if people do treat you like it.
      Feelings don’t go away by ignoring them. They fester by ignoring them. Chances are that the anger is there because you are already trying to ignore and cover up something else. If you just cover the anger with silent brooding then depression or stress caused illness will take its place. Other people and external situations are not causing your anger, your own vulnerabilities are allowing those things to trigger your anger. Address the vulnerabilities and you will take away the power that the people and situations have to trigger anger in you

    This isn't always the case. Sometimes staying silent when you're angry is the opposite of what you need to do. Because staying silent can cause the anger to build and destroy yourself from within.

      Very true to me, i had to learn first to find the reasons from my past that was causing me so much pain to then be turning into anger, learned to journal my thoughts and realease my anger. Now I'm able to just stay quiet, but wasn't that easy for me

    When you keep silent the anger does not go away. You internalize it and does violence to your own soul. It is the thought life that fuels anger. Thoughts of fear or injustice cause a person to be angry. Silencing them does not make them go away. They destroy the body from within.

      very nice point .. and i know people who go slient when an issue and anger starts and instead keep burning it within and completely remove that person from life .. the act of forgiving never comes to them and they keep it simmering silently instead of venting out .. this does more damage to both the souls ..

      Have you ever tried this solution? Based on your response i think not. I used to be quickly reactive in anger and often said or did things I'd regret or felt terrible for losing my temper and control, however, when i started to be quiet when angry, i realized my anger was irrational and there really wasn't a need to get this upset in the first place. I also allowed myself to keep my angry thoughts (which often aren't nice) to myself. Once i took the time to calm down, the anger either went away or i was able to respond in a more collected way. Try it some time.
      Mind you, this is coming from someone with ADHD who often has a hard time regulating my emotions.

      I think the point was quiet for a small amount of time....some it may be 10 minutes....some longer. I don't think it was meant to be perceived as quiet forever. Hope that helps ☘️

    Thank you!! This is what I am working on. My mother spent her life being angry because she thought she had to live a certain way that caused her pain. Unfortunately I picked her anger up. It is so destructive in all ways. I also try to live my life being true to myself. Unfortunately society molds us and it is hard to be free and find my real loving self at times.

    A nice story but this must have been before internalised anger was recognised as being a problem. Bottled up anger can manifest itself as anxiety and depression.

      It's not so much about internalizing your anger, as not letting your anger control you. I have a LOT of anger issues, and have dealt the anxiety and depression. For me, it has been learning to not let things get to me. To let go of the need to control everything. And learning to acknowledge what I'm feeling and telling myself that I'm allowed to feel that way and then let it go. It's hard, but I keep working at it.

      The correct approach is to quickly replace the anger with loving kindness. But you have to do this as soon as the first hint of anger arises on the feeling level. You have to be quick before it grows. If you practice this it will happen more an more automatically. Overtime, your character will have completely changed

      I think it means more that we should learn not to lash out in the heat of angry emotion. Anger in its raw form like this either leads to confrontations or fear or withdrawal or defensiveness, none of which tend to be useful or constructive. When we’re not in that angry state we can think about how to raise the issue and communicate in a much better way. It feels weird (I can only raise issues that are troubling me once I’m so angry I can’t contain myself anymore) but raising things calmly is always best (and generally leads to a better outcome) for you (and everyone else).

    Yes it works...I used to be that kind of person almost monk like. Socially the effect it had on people around me was that I was looked at as an introvert, unexciting.
    This was actually my persona and I actually felt kindof powerful with deep thinking skills.
    But as time worn on and I got older more people would tug at me socially and like all things I began to break down and loose control.
    Thing is I realized it's other "people" that cause a kind of infection on those like me who want only peace.
    So I started cutting off those that I felt were toxic to my well being.
    Even some family members.
    Truth is there is no happy medium...you need to be fully and completely happy with yourself and not feel dependent on others.
    You have to be able and willing to live on your own to find that kind of peace.
    Growing older I also realized there is no such thing as real true peace on this world at least the kind that lasts. I do not believe we are permitted that kind of zen like life on a long term basis. It's about suffering and what you do with it.
    So maybe we are here to graduate a kind of school..
    But yes ..."silence like a cancer grows"

    Sometimes when angered i have kept quiet and when I left the situation I felt as though I should have put the person who incurred my wrath in their place. Keeping quiet when angered seems like repression and this isn't healthy. Peace 💚

      I agree. In my marriage, I have found that when my husband and I have a disagreement and it gets heated. I remove myself from the situation because at that point, we are not listening nor hearing each other...we are talking to be talking. It may take a few days but I revisit the issue when we both are more calmer. If it's a stranger, you can kindly say "I do not accept your anger. I give it back to you". You can also say this to your spouse/partner or family memember. In my opinion, repressed and suppressed emotions are built up anger.

      When angry, vent by typing on your notepad all your complaints and after 20 minutes see if you still want to tell your partner any of the points you came up with.

    This is very useful for me because right now I feel like I am living in the house of this lady. My aunt is a very toxic woman. She is always angry, screaming and throwing adult tantrums. She calls herself a woman of God yet she regularly insults me and my family saying she is going to heaven and we will all go to hell. The two of us have had many blazing arguments that have turned physical on some occasions until we are pulled apart. But I will try to practice this and be silent

    Truer words can not be spoken. I just happened to come across this channel and I like it! All our wisdom comes from the ancient ones. We have been brainwashed into believing only the bible has the answers. As one who has been studying global religion, human origins and psychology for the past 40 years ( unofficially and just for my own personal curiosity ) I have determined that we have completely lost touch with ourselves, nature, the earth and the cosmos. We as a whole, have been systematically and methodically devolved by "men" (priests) who have nothing but greed, ego, lust, perversion, and a desire for power and complete control in their hearts. Show me one good priest and I will show you ten thousand who are nothing but evil. This is not hate speech but simply the truth. For thousands of years we have been blindfolded, whipped, killed, and brainwashed into believing their narrative. Through fear they have herded us like cattle and funnelled us into a tiny invisible cage that is held together with pages of the bible. It only has power over us because we have been led to believe it does. Our hearts belong to us, and they cannot have mine. Truth is universal, and the ancient ones desired to impart that universal truth to us so that we could all have a much better human experience. What we exist in today is a false reality. It is a construct of smoke and mirrors. Everything we have been taught in (western world) school, is a false narrative. Everything we have been taught to believe in spiritually is the construct of these same corrupt priesthoods. We have been forced to think, feel, believe and behave in a manner that deviates from natural law. We are being led to the slaughter. They have made us feel bad, naughty, guilty, etc. about something completely natural like procreation and mutual ( respectfully private) expressions of physical love. It's all part of the human experience. We only need to answer to God the Source and we are all born with the ability to do so, in our amazing and immensely powerful hearts. But as a whole, we have forgotten this. We still exist in the dark ages, and it's about to get a whole lot darker. I pray for humanity, and all life on earth to overcome this.

    I'm not a Buddhist, however this teaching is doing a lot of good in the world and I respect that. Learn to be in control of yourself and not let the negativity roused in you leak out and infect others around you. Unfortunately, a lot of people are taught from a young age to conflate a spirit of anger with a desire for justice, as if we cannot have the desire to set things right without giving volatile emotions control over us. If you still believe anger is on your side then I have some questions for you: Have you ever noticed that when you’re angry you likely act dumb, impatient, and reckless? Have you noticed that it fuels your desire for mindless violence and destruction such as throwing and breaking things? How many times have you acted on anger and while in the moment you felt completely justified but later you regret what you have said and/or done? Have you noticed that being mad not only doesn’t solve the problem, but it causes more problems for yourself and everybody else? Or do you like being possessed by the spirit of anger despite how counterproductive and harmful it is?

    This is so true. We all have to make a choice. It can work if you make the choice. You have to learn to let it go. Be calm when confronted or when anger tries to enter your life. Is it really that important to let it take you over? Probably not. Keeping your mouth shut or restricting what comes out is very important to control anger from what someone or something is trying to do to you. If you let it in it will own you and can have very negative effects. Knowledge is from the past. Wisdom is of the now and future moments. What will you do? Learn from the past for today and tomorrow. Amen! You CAN control anger.

    I watched this a long time ago, and it helped me take 10 minutes to simmer down. Though I still made quite an adjustment to this process. Anger responds to injustice; we get upset and frustrated with the problems we come across or create. Whether little or big, you can't ignore the issues. Anger is not the worst emotion. The worst feeling it's hatred. So when there is a problem, I take the time to breathe and keep quiet for a while but not forget that there is a problem that we can fix because every problem has a solution. So when the time is over, I am not clouded by so much frustration to cloud my judgement of how the situation should be fixed by instead solving the problem with a calm and levelheaded mind. I believe that is the correct way.

    Silence is one way , the other is changing the attitude of the mind. That is thinking something which would make us happy and would be against anger , or thinking something which is possible to regret anger . Swami Vivekananda said " We are what our thoughts have made us , so take care of your thoughts , words are secondary . Thoughts live , they travel far " .

      Buddha was talking about the silence of awareness. In this awareness you can see the anger rise up within you. For me, I notice the energy of anger flows in my head upwards. If you keep watching it, with awareness, you will see that it sort of dips and goes away.
      Attitude of mind is automatic from conditioning you have to also watch this, be aware and your real intelligence, not thoughts or words, will make you see clearly. Negative thoughts will look silly and you won't give them energy. Positive will arise naturally so don't worry about attitude of mind. With awareness it will change too.
