Dang, Apple and modifying an older German car in one video?!? All my favorites combined into one! Thanks Luke and happy holidays to you and all who read this comment
Nice car, Luke! I've been in the market for one of these too, but I'd personally have the 6 speed manual. I work on cars for a living and I work on tons of Porsches. These really are great cars. Fairly reliable and not the worst to DIY. And of course is phenomenal to drive. I know you're going to fall in love with it.
Definitely. Sport cars should be bought in manual transmission. I've been daily driving my manual car in LA for more than 8 years now, wouldn't trade it for anything
I have a base model honda civic that had a basic bluetooth radio in it from the factory. I bought a apple carplay radio made specifically for my car from a manufacturer called Dasaita and it was a game changer. It was made specifically for my car so it actually added features my old radio didn’t offer like telling me which door is open, giving me moving lines in the camera while backing up, and a bunch more features that are actually useful! It actually made me love my car and seeing you be able to do something similar is awesome. Thanks for making great videos all these years!
Adding a highpass filter on your voice-over will remove sub pops. You wont hear it on a phone but makes a difference for people watching on tv and avr amps.

The moment you covered the shift stick to avoid scratching it, I fell in love with your attention to detail. Keep it up! It was both new and entertaining.
That’s so cool! I fully expected a new head unit but props to whoever engineered this work around. Just brilliant. I always liked having an older car that i can fully swap the head unit in so my 99 has wireless CarPlay. Scroll is a bit awkward on my cheaper head unit but its really nice for basic interactions and honestly just having maps and music. Usually get that stuff sorted before i start driving anyways! But its just such a nice convenience to have. And i can keep my phone in my pocket!
I put a CarPlay unit in my 2011 Toyota Corolla and honestly, I can say the same thing about how it transformed my car. I love the integration and honestly, it made the car feel 10 years newer after.
So awesome to see that you're a Porsche guy. I have a 2014 911 Carrera S and I just put Apple Carplay/Android Auto in my car about a month ago. Makes such a huge difference in these cars.
Hi Luke, really nice car, hope that you enjoy it. It looks really much better with the wrap (seems more modern), love the stock look of both the interior and exterior - but the color makes it much younger. Enjoy it!
Porsche makes a new upgrade in their "Classic" line that does exactly what you did, but it's OEM with a new screen and doesn't have the limitations of the one you got. It costs twice as much, but trade offs.
I did a very similar install on my 2013 Audi, and I totally understand how this changes the whole driving experience. Voice button works to bring up Siri, everything is just how it should be. The Audi did not have a touch screen, but you can still navigate the controls using the built in selectors without issue.
just stumbled onto your channel, in the middle of shopping for an older MacBook. Lo and behold you're a Porsche Cayman owner like myself... knew there was something I liked about you.. Enjoy the car, I DD everyday, even in winter..Love it.
Perfect way to modernize it, the whole premise of this whole thing, it transfers modern features Into an old infotainment. No need to worry about the lack of android auto and car play, or music listening
As a tech and auto enthusiast, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this vid. Coming from a BMW 335i, which had awful mechanical issues but a wonderfully intuitive entertainment system to a Lexus RC350, which I love every aspect of 1000% more than the Bimmer save its pretty woeful entertainment system interface (which is still terrible even in the refreshed versions of it), I'm really looking at doing something similar to my car. I know there are some dodgy replacement units that exist, but I'm waiting until I see something a little more robust before I take on that challenge. Thanks for taking the time to make this, and I'm definitely going to check out your car channel!
@@Cle_M3 On paper, definitely. In practice, if you consider the ability to drive a vehicle daily without issue and to not spend thousands of dollars a year on repairs and maintenance important, the Lexus is miles ahead.
Personally I’ve always wanted to try and modernize an older car with wild ideas like this and seeing you do it makes it that much more interesting. Crazy how well it works to if I’m honest great job, doing the Apple car before official release.
I am owning an E-Class from 2008 - slamming a CarPlay unit in it, was the best thing to do. But I had to change the complete head unit. I wish there where a bigger market to „upgrade“ older cars. It‘s amazing to give them new features normally only new cars have!
I did this on my Lexus IS and LX. CarPlay looks amazing on a 12 inch and 10 inch display. Shoutout to all the kit makers who make this possible, and the fact the new cars don’t often have the wireless option makes it sweeter. Finally, using a physical button to swap Modes is also superior to finding the interface option.
I did something similar to this to my 2007 Lexus IS called the GROM VLine. It adds wireless CarPlay and android Auto while retaining the stock NAV screen since the climate controls are in there. It’s awesome having modern CarPlay in my old Lexus without having to buy a new car.
I absolutely love the VLine. I wanted to keep the stock look on my 2010 IS with CarPlay. It also brings to life the screen quality of the stock screen which is impressive for its time.
Regarding pressing the back button to select the next track and the forward button to select the previous track, I'm sure you've already considered swapping the button caps around? Or can you swap the wires connecting them?
@@AwesumIndustrys well but lets be real he will only use them now with apple carplay not with the stock unit so swaping these buttons would work just fine
My 2013 Volkswagen Beetle had a basic am fm radio and I replaced it with an OEM Volkswagen unit that works with wired Apple CarPlay. I think it’s simply amazing. It completely changed how much I enjoy the car and believe me I already loved my car from the moment I bought it.
Wow, congrats on the new to you wheels! The color is awesome… I’ve been a subscriber for a while and had no clue you were a gear head, but considering you take apart computers it makes sense. I did a similar upgrade to my 2006 Volvo V50 back in 2016… It was an Android touch screen and head unit to replace the stock unit, and it was wonky, sure, but it did transform the car, especially on road trips. So kudos and great video!
I did this in my 2013 Boxster. If you want to keep the satellite board in there, it will take some creative work to fit everything back in. Colorful language may help...
I put Apple CarPlay in my 2013 Volkswagen beetle with a very easy plug and play radio swap which is also awesome because it’s an OEM Volkswagen port and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done to my car. It completely enhanced my experience of driving and just overall using my car.
